Abstract:We study quantum field theories which have quantum groups as global internal symmetries. We show that in such theories operators are generically non-local, and should be thought as living at the ends of topological lines. We describe the general constraints of the quantum group symmetry, given by Ward identities, that correlation functions of the theory should satisfy. We also show that generators of the symmetry can be represented by topological lines with some novel properties. We then discuss a particular example of $U_q(sl_2)$ symmetric CFT, which we solve using the bootstrap techniques and relying on the symmetry. We finally show strong evidence that for a special value of $q$ a subsector of this theory reproduces the fermionic formulation of the Ising model. This suggests that a quantum group can act on local operators as well, however, it generically transforms them into non-local ones.

Abstract:To formulate the universal constraints of quantum statistics data of generic long-range entangled quantum systems, we introduce the geometric-topology surgery theory on spacetime manifolds where quantum systems reside, cutting and gluing the associated quantum amplitudes, specifically in 2+1 and 3+1 spacetime dimensions. First, we introduce the fusion data for worldline and worldsheet operators capable of creating anyonic excitations of particles and strings, well-defined in gapped states of matter with intrinsic topological orders. Second, we introduce the braiding statistics data of particles and strings, such as the geometric Berry matrices for particle-string Aharonov-Bohm, 3-string, 4-string, or multi-string adiabatic loop braiding process, encoded by submanifold linkings, in the closed spacetime 3-manifolds and 4-manifolds. Third, we derive new `quantum surgery' formulas and constraints, analogous to Verlinde formula associating fusion and braiding statistics data via spacetime surgery, essential for defining the theory of topological orders, 3d and 4d TQFTs and potentially correlated to bootstrap boundary physics such as gapless modes, extended defects, 2d and 3d conformal field theories or quantum anomalies. This article is meant to be an extended and further detailed elaboration of our previous work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.05951" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.05951">arXiv:1602.05951</a>] and Chapter 6 of [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1602.05569" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1602.05569">arXiv:1602.05569</a>]. Our theory applies to general quantum theories and quantum mechanical systems, also applicable to, but not necessarily requiring the quantum field theory description.

Quantum Group Intertwiner Space From Quantum Curved Tetrahedron

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a quantum theory of homogeneously curved tetrahedron geometry, by applying the combinatorial quantization to the phase space of tetrahedron shapes defined in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1506.03053" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1506.03053">arXiv:1506.03053</a>. Our method is based on the relation between this phase space and the moduli space of SU(2) flat connections on a 4-punctured sphere. The quantization results in the physical Hilbert space as the solution of the quantum closure constraint, which quantizes the classical closure condition $M_4M_3M_2M_1=1$, $M_\nu\in$ SU(2), for the homogeneously curved tetrahedron. The quantum group Uq(su(2)) emerges as the gauge symmetry of a quantum tetrahedron. The physical Hilbert space of the quantum tetrahedron coincides with the Hilbert space of 4-valent intertwiners of Uq(su(2)). In addition, we define the area operators quantizing the face areas of the tetrahedron and compute the spectrum. The resulting spectrum is consistent with the usual Loop-Quantum-Gravity area spectrum in the large spin regime but is different for small spins. This work closely relates to 3+1 dimensional Loop Quantum Gravity in presence of cosmological constant and provides a justification for the emergence of quantum group in the theory.

Abstract:We reconstruct a quantum group associated with any Lie algebra together with its representation theory from twisted homologies of generalized configuration spaces of disks. Along the way it brings new combinatorics to the theory, but our diagrams represent true submanifolds of configuration spaces and combinatorial relations between them translate actual twisted homological relations.

Abstract:This short summary of recent developments in quantum compact groups and star products is divided into 2 parts. In the first one we recast star products in a more abstract form as deformations and review its recent developments. The second part starts with a rapid presentation of standard quantum group theory and its problems, then moves to their completion by introduction of suitable Montel topologies well adapted to duality. Preferred deformations (by star products and unchanged coproducts) of Hopf algebras of functions on compact groups and their duals, are of special interest. Connection with the usual models of quantum groups and the quantum double is then presented.

Abstract:There is a renowned solution of the modular bootstrap that defines the UV complete quantum Liouville theory. We triangulate the path-integral of this Liouville CFT on any 2D surface ℳ, by proposing a shrinkable boundary condition for this special CFT that allows small holes to close, analogous to the proposal in rational CFTs [1-3]. This is essentially a tensor network that admits an interpretation of a state-sum of a 3D topological theory constructed with quantum 6j symbols of 𝒰_q(SL(2,ℝ)) with non-trivial boundary conditions, and it reduces to a sum over 3D geometries weighted by the Einstein-Hilbert action to leading order in large c. The boundary conditions of quantum Liouville theory specifies a very special sum over bulk geometries to faithfully reproduce the CFT path-integral. The triangulation coincides with producing a network of geodesics in the AdS bulk, which can be changed making use of the pentagon identity and orthogonality condition satisfied by the 6j symbols, and arranged into a precise holographic tensor network.

Abstract:We develop a general framework for quantum field theory on noncommutative spaces, i.e., spaces with quantum group symmetry. We use the path integral approach to obtain expressions for $n$-point functions. Perturbation theory leads us to generalised Feynman diagrams which are braided, i.e., they have non-trivial over- and under-crossings. We demonstrate the power of our approach by applying it to $\phi^4$-theory on the quantum 2-sphere. We find that the basic divergent diagram of the theory is regularised.

Tannakian QFT: from spark algebras to quantum groups

Abstract:We propose a nonperturbative construction of Hopf algebras that represent categories of line operators in topological quantum field theory, in terms of semi-extended operators (spark algebras) on pairs of transverse topological boundary conditions. The construction is a direct implementation of Tannakian formalism in QFT. Focusing on d=3 dimensional theories, we find topological definitions of R-matrices, ribbon twists, and the Drinfeld double construction for generalized quantum groups. We illustrate our construction in finite-group gauge theory, and apply it to obtain new results for B-twisted 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theories, a.k.a. equivariant Rozansky-Witten theory, or supergroup BF theory (including ordinary BF theory with compact gauge group). We reformulate our construction mathematically in terms of abelian and dg tensor categories, and discuss connections with Koszul duality.

Abstract:It is known that any covering space of a topological group has the natural structure of a topological group. This article discusses a noncommutative generalization of this fact. A noncommutative generalization of the topological group is a quantum group. Also there is a noncommutative generalization of a covering. The combination of these algebraic constructions yields a motive to research the generalization of coverings of topological groups. In contrary to a topological group a covering space of a quantum group does not have the natural structure of the quantum group. However a covering space of a quantum group satisfies to a condition which is weaker than the condition of a covering space of a topological group.

Abstract:The basic ingredients of the groupoid interpretation of Quantum Mechanics are discussed. Starting with the motivation to consider measure groupoids as the appropriate statistical and kinematical setting to describe quantum mechanical systems, the algebra of observables of the system is constructed as the von Neumann algebra of the groupoid. The interpretation of the theory for classical systems is briefly analysed. As a final application of these ideas, Feynman's sum-over-histories interpretation of the theory is discussed in the groupoid picture.

Abstract:We give a very concise review of the group field theory formalism for non-perturbative quantum gravity, a higher dimensional generalisation of matrix models. We motivate it as a simplicial and local realisation of the idea of 3rd quantization of the gravitational field, equivalently of a quantum field theory of simplicial geometry, in which also the topology of space is fully dynamical. We highlight the basic structure of the formalism, and discuss briefly various models that are being studied, some recent results and the many open issues that future research should face. Finally, we point out the connections with other approaches to quantum gravity, such as loop quantum gravity, quantum Regge calculus and dynamical triangulations, and causal sets.

Abstract:The development of quantum theory on a torus has a long history, and can be traced back to the 1920s, with the attempts by Nordstr\"om, Kaluza and Klein to define a fourth spatial dimension with a finite size, being curved in the form of a torus, such that Einstein and Maxwell equations would be unified. Many developments were carried out considering cosmological problems in association with particles physics, leading to methods that are useful for areas of physics, in which size effects play an important role. This interest in finite size effect systems has been increasing rapidly over the last decades, due principally to experimental improvements. In this review, the foundations of compactified quantum field theory on a torus are presented in a unified way, in order to consider applications in particle and condensed matted physics.

Abstract:Two singularity theorems can be proven if one attempts to let a Lorentzian cobordism interpolate between two topologically distinct manifolds. On the other hand, Cartier and DeWitt-Morette have given a rigorous definition for quantum field theories (qfts) by means of path integrals. This article uses their results to study whether qfts can be made compatible with topology changes. We show that path integrals over metrics need a finite norm for the latter and for degenerate metrics, this problem can sometimes be resolved with tetrads. We prove that already in the neighborhood of some cuspidal singularities, difficulties can arise to define certain qfts. On the other hand, we show that simple qfts can be defined around conical singularities that result from a topology change in a simple setup. We argue that the ground state of many theories of quantum gravity will imply a small cosmological constant and, during the expansion of the universe, will cause frequent topology changes. Unfortunately, it is difficult to describe the transition amplitudes consistently due to the aforementioned problems. We argue that one needs to describe qfts by stochastic differential equations, and in the case of gravity, by Regge calculus in order to resolve this problem.

Fundamental Parameters and Abundances of Metal-Poor Stars: The SDSS Standard BD +17 4708

Abstract:The atmospheric parameters and iron abundance of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectrophotometric standard star BD +17 4708 are critically examined using up-to-date Kurucz model atmospheres, LTE line formation calculations, and reliable atomic data. We find Teff = 6141+-50 K, log g = 3.87+-0.08, and [Fe/H]=-1.74+-0.09. The line-of-sight interstellar reddening, bolometric flux, limb-darkened angular diameter, stellar mass, and the abundances of Mg, Si, and Ca are also obtained. This star is a unique example of a moderately metal-poor star for which the effective temperature can be accurately constrained from the observed spectral energy distribution (corrected for reddening). Such analysis leads to a value that is higher than most spectroscopic results previously reported in the literature (~5950 K). We find that the ionization balance of Fe lines is satisfied only if a low Teff (~5950 K) is adopted. With our preferred Teff (6141 K), the mean iron abundance we obtain from the FeII lines is lower by about 0.15 dex than that from the FeI lines, and therefore, the discrepancy between the mean iron abundance from FeI and FeII lines cannot be explained by overionization by UV photons as the main non-LTE effect. We also comment on non-LTE effects and the importance of inelastic collisions with neutral H atoms in the determination of oxygen abundances in metal-poor stars from the 777 nm OI triplet. On finite group global and gauged $q$-form symmetries in TQFT

Abstract:We describe a method to implement finite group global and gauged $q$-form symmetries into the axiomatic structure of $d$-dimensional Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT) in terms of bordisms decorated by cohomology classes. Namely, on a manifold with a boundary, the gauge field is considered as a class in an appropriate relative cohomology group. It is defined in a way that allows self-consistent cutting and gluing of the manifolds and involves a choice of a $(d-q-2)$-skeleton in the boundary. The method, in a sense, generalizes to arbitrary $d$ and $q$ a method that has been considered in the literature in the case of $d=3,\;q=0,1$.

A Universal Kinematical Group for Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:In 1968, Dashen and Sharp obtained a certain singular Lie algebra of local densities and currents from canonical commutation relations in nonrelativistic quantum field theory. The corresponding Lie group is infinite dimensional: the natural semidirect product of an additive group of scalar functions with a group of diffeomorphisms. Unitary representations of this group describe a wide variety of quantum systems, and have predicted previously unsuspected possibilities; notably, anyons and nonabelian anyons in two space dimensions. We present here foundational reasons why this semidirect product group serves as a universal kinematical group for quantum mechanics. We obtain thus a unified account of all possible quantum kinematics for systems with mass in an arbitrary physical space, and clarify the role played by topology in quantum mechanics. Our development does not require quantization of classical phase space; rather, the classical limit follows from the quantum mechanics. We also consider the relationship of our development to Heisenberg quantization.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak g$ be a complex simple Lie algebra and let $U_{\zeta}({\mathfrak g})$ be the corresponding Lusztig ${\mathbb Z}[q,q^{-1}]$-form of the quantized enveloping algebra specialized to an $\ell$th root of unity. Moreover, let $\mod(U_{\zeta}({\mathfrak g}))$ be the braided monoidal category of finite-dimensional modules for $U_{\zeta}({\mathfrak g})$. In this paper we classify the thick tensor ideals of $\mod(U_{\zeta}({\mathfrak g}))$ and compute the prime spectrum of the stable module category associated to $\text{mod}(U_{\zeta}({\mathfrak g}))$ as defined by Balmer.

Abstract:Responses to questions, comments and criticism of our recent paper "General Relativity Resolves.." are provided. It is emphasized that our model is entirely natural to describe the dynamics of an axially symmetric galaxy and that our solution, albeit idealized, contains the essence of the problem. The discontinuity of the metric derivative on the symmetry plane is necessarily interpreted as the effect of the mathematically idealized discontinuity of the gradient of the density and is shown to be naturally connected to the distributed volume density via the Gauss divergence theorem. We present arguments to the effect that for our approximate weak field model, we can choose the physically satisfactory mass distribution without an accompanying singular mass surface layer. To support this contention, we modify our solution slightly by removing the discontinuity with a region of continuous density gradient overlapping the $z=0$ plane. The alternative of invoking a surface layer leads to the presence of a negative mass surface layer approaching the numerical value of the positive mass continuous region. This is in contradiction with the assumed stationarity of the model. We find that a test particle behaves normally as it approaches the $z=0$ plane, the acceleration being towards the direction of this plane. This is in contradiction to the negative mass layer hypothesis as negative mass would repel the test particle. Thus, further support is added to the integrity of our original model.
