Abstract:We present the results of a joint observational campaign between the Green Bank radio telescope and the VERITAS gamma-ray telescope, which searched for a correlation between the emission of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays (E-gamma > 150 GeV) and giant radio pulses (GRPs) from the Crab pulsar at 8.9 GHz. A total of 15,366 GRPs were recorded during 11.6 hr of simultaneous observations, which were made across four nights in 2008 December and in 2009 November and December. We searched for an enhancement of the pulsed gamma-ray emission within time windows placed around the arrival time of the GRP events. In total, eight different time windows with durations ranging from 0.033 ms to 72 s were positioned at three different locations relative to the GRP to search for enhanced gamma-ray emission which lagged, led, or was concurrent with, the GRP event. Furthermore, we performed separate searches on main pulse GRPs and interpulse GRPs and on the most energetic GRPs in our data sample. No significant enhancement of pulsed VHE emission was found in any of the preformed searches. We set upper limits of 5-10 times the average VHE flux of the Crab pulsar on the flux simultaneous with interpulse GRPs on single-rotation-period timescales. On similar to 8 s timescales around interpulse GRPs, we set an upper limit of 2-3 times the average VHE flux. Within the framework of recent models for pulsed VHE emission from the Crab pulsar, the expected VHE-GRP emission correlations are below the derived limits.

Abstract:We report the detection of pulsed gamma rays from the Crab pulsar at energies above 100 giga-electron volts (GeV) with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) array of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The detection cannot be explained on the basis of current pulsar models. The photon spectrum of pulsed emission between 100 mega-electron volts and 400 GeV is described by a broken power law that is statistically preferred over a power law with an exponential cutoff. It is unlikely that the observation can be explained by invoking curvature radiation as the origin of the observed gamma rays above 100 GeV. Our findings require that these gamma rays be produced more than 10 stellar radii from the neutron star.
Search for VHE pulsed emission from the Crab with the CAT Telescope

Abstract:Since 1996, the CAT experiment, operating at the THEMIS site (French Pyrenees), has been collecting Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray data from the Crab. The temporal analysis of photon arrival times folded with the pulsar parameters did not reveal any significant pulsation. The upper limit of a steady pulsed flux over the 102.7 hours of observation is 1.5 10^-12 cm^-2.s^-1, 3.0 10^-13 cm^-2.s^-1 and 5.4 10^-14 cm^-2.s^-1 above 250 GeV, 1 TeV and 5 TeV, respectively. These results put stringent constraints on the models of high energy pulsar electrodynamics.

Abstract:We discuss the recent detection of pulsed gamma-ray emission from the Crab Pulsar above 100 GeV with the VERITAS array of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Gamma-ray emission at theses energies is not expected in present pulsar models. We find that the photon spectrum of pulsed emission between 100 MeV and 400 GeV can be described by a broken power law, and that it is statistically preferred over a power law with an exponential cut-off. In the VERITAS energy range the spectrum can be described with a simple power law with a spectral index of -3.8 and a flux normalization at 150 GeV that is equivalent to 1% of the Crab Nebula gamma-ray flux. The detection of pulsed emission above 100 GeV and the absence of an exponential cutoff rules out curvature radiation as the primary gamma-ray-producing mechanism. The pulse profile exhibits the characteristic two pulses of the Crab Pulsar at phases 0.0 and 0.4, albeit 2-3 times narrower than below 10 GeV. The narrowing can be interpreted as a tapered particle acceleration region in the magnetosphere. Our findings require that the emission region of the observed gamma rays be beyond 10 stellar radii from the neutron star.

No evidence for the pulsed emissions was found in our analysis. Upper limits at different energies were calculated for a $3 \sigma$ confidence level in the energy range of multi-TeV to several hundred TeV.

Abstract:In 1989, the Whipple 10m telescope achieved the first indisputable detection of a TeV gamma-ray source, the Crab Nebula. Until its decommissioning in 2011, the Whipple telescope took regular measurements of the nebula. With the recent discovery of GeV gamma-ray flaring activity in the Crab Nebula, it is an opportune time to return to the Whipple telescope data set and search its extensive archive for evidence of TeV flares. A data set on the Crab Nebula spanning ten years, 2000 - 2010, is compiled and searched for day-scale flaring activity using a Bayesian-block binning algorithm. No evidence for significant flaring activity is found. Monte Carlo simulations show that low levels of flux increase on short timescales are difficult to detect. Assuming a flare duration of seven days, 99% confidence level upper limits are calculated for the possible frequency of five-fold, two-fold and 1.5-fold flares in the data set. An upper limit of 0.02 flares per year is found for the five-fold flare, and a limit of 0.27 flares per year is placed on the two-fold flare. The detection of the 1.5-fold flare is consistent with the false-positive rate of the method, and so cannot be excluded.

High Sensitivity Beamformed Observations of the Crab Pulsar's Radio Emission

Abstract:We analyzed four epochs of beamformed EVN data of the Crab Pulsar at 1658.49 MHz. With the high sensitivity resulting from resolving out the Crab Nebula, we are able to detect even the faint high-frequency components in the folded profile. We also detect a total of 65951 giant pulses, which we use to investigate the rates, fluence, phase, and arrival time distributions. We find that for the main pulse component, our giant pulses represent about 80% of the total flux. This suggests we have a nearly complete giant pulse energy distribution, although it is not obvious how the observed distribution could be extended to cover the remaining 20% of the flux without invoking large numbers of faint bursts for every rotation. Looking at the difference in arrival time between subsequent bursts in single rotations, we confirm that the likelihood of finding giant pulses close to each other is increased beyond that expected for randomly occurring bursts - some giant pulses consist of causally related microbursts, with typical separations of $\sim\!30{\rm\;\mu s}$ - but also find evidence that at separations $\gtrsim\!100{\rm\;\mu s}$ the likelihood of finding another giant pulse is suppressed. In addition, our high sensitivity enabled us to detect weak echo features in the brightest pulses (at $\sim\!0.4\%$ of the peak giant pulse flux), which are delayed by up to $\sim\!300{\rm\;\mu s}$.

Abstract:The GRANITE III camera of the Whipple Cherenkov Telescope at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory on Mount Hopkins, Arizona (2300 m a.s.l.) has the highest angular resolution of all cameras used on this telescope so far. The central region of the camera has 379 pixels with an individual angular diameter of 0.12 degrees. This makes the instrument especially suitable for observations of gamma-induced air-showers at large zenith angles since the increase in average distance to the shower maximum leads to smaller shower images in the focal plane of the telescope. We examine the performance of the telescope for observations of gamma-induced air-showers at zenith angles up to 63 degrees based on observations of Mkn 421 and using Monte Carlo Simulations. An improvement to the standard data analysis is suggested.
Observations of Radio Giant Pulses with GAVRT

Abstract:Radio giant pulses provide a unique opportunity to study the pulsar radio emission mechanism in exquisite detail. Previous studies have revealed a wide range of properties and phenomena, including extraordinarily high brightness temperatures, sub-nanosecond emission features, and banded dynamic spectra. New measurements of giant pulse characteristics can help guide and test theoretical emission models. To this end, an extensive observation campaign has begun which will provide more than 500 hours on the Crab with a 34-meter antenna located in California, USA. The observations are being done as part of an educational outreach program called the Goldstone-Apple Valley Radio Telescope (GAVRT). This antenna has a novel wide bandwidth receiver which provides up to 8 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth in the range of 2.5 to 14 GHz. These observations will provide detailed information about the variability, amplitude distribution, and detailed frequency structure of radio giant pulses. In addition, a database of pulses from these observations and others of the Crab pulsar is being created which will simplify multiwavelength correlation analysis.

Observations of the Crab Nebula with the Whipple 10 m Telescope

Abstract:Due to the strong and steady TeV gamma-ray emission from the Crab Nebula supernova remnant, its measured flux and energy spectrum can be used to verify the calibration and data reduction methods applied to IACT data acquired over many observing seasons. This gives us confidence in the results obtained on variable TeV sources observed over the same period and in relating the sensitivity of new instruments to historical datasets. Here we present the results of an analysis of 65.3 hours of good quality data taken on the Crab Nebula between October 2000 and March 2006 with the Whipple 10m telescope. The total exposure resulted in a 46 sigma signal with 11886 selected excess events. The energy spectrum was best fit by a power law of the form dN/dE = (3.19 +/- 0.07_stat) x 10^-11 (E/TeV)^(-2.64 +/- 0.03_stat) cm^-2/s/TeV in the energy range 0.49--8 TeV. The systematic uncertainty in the flux was estimated to be 30%, with a systematic error of 0.2 in the photon index. A reasonable agreement is shown for a fit to a constant flux over the 6 years.

Abstract:The 43m telescope at the NRAO site in Green Bank, WV has recently been outfitted with a clone of the Green Bank Ultimate Pulsar Processing Instrument (GUPPI \cite{Ransom:2009}) backend, making it very useful for a number of pulsar related studies in frequency ranges 800-1600 MHz and 220-440 MHz. Some of the recent science being done with it include: monitoring of the Crab pulsar, a blind search for transient sources, pulsar searches of targets of opportunity, and an all-sky mapping project. For the Crab monitoring project, regular observations are searched for giant pulses (GPs), which are then correlated with $\gamma$-ray photons from the \emph{Fermi} spacecraft. Data from the all-sky mapping project are first run through a pipeline that does a blind transient search, looking for single pulses over a DM range of 0-500 pc~cm$^{-3}$. These projects are made possible by MIT Lincoln Labs.

Abstract:We report on gamma-ray observations of the Crab Pulsar and Nebula using 8 months of survey data with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). The high quality light curve obtained using the ephemeris provided by the Nancay and Jodrell Bank radio telescopes shows two main peaks stable in phase with energy. The first gamma-ray peak leads the radio main pulse by (281 \pm 12 \pm 21) mus, giving new constraints on the production site of non-thermal emission in pulsar magnetospheres. The improved sensitivity and the unprecedented statistics afforded by the LAT enable precise measurement of the Crab Pulsar spectral parameters: cut-off energy at E_c = (5.8 \pm 0.5 \pm 1.2) GeV, spectral index of Gamma = (1.97 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.06) and integral photon flux above 100 MeV of (2.09 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.18) x 10^{-6} cm^{-2} s^{-1}. The first errors represent the statistical error on the fit parameters, while the second ones are the systematic uncertainties. Pulsed gamma-ray photons are observed up to ~ 20 GeV which precludes emission near the stellar surface, below altitudes of around 4 to 5 stellar radii in phase intervals encompassing the two main peaks. The spectrum of the nebula in the energy range 100 MeV - 300 GeV is well described by the sum of two power-laws of indices Gamma_{sync} = (3.99 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.08) and Gamma_{IC} = (1.64 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.07), corresponding to the falling edge of the synchrotron and the rising edge of the inverse Compton components, respectively. This latter, which links up naturally with the spectral data points of Cherenkov experiments, is well reproduced via inverse Compton scattering from standard Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) nebula models, and does not require any additional radiation mechanism.

Abstract:The Crab pulsar and plerion are some of the brightest and best studied non-thermal astrophysical sources. The recent discovery of pulsed gamma-ray emission above 100 gigaelectronvolts (GeV) from the Crab pulsar with VERITAS (the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) challenges commonly accepted pulsar emission models and puts the gamma-ray emission region far out in the magnetosphere - close to or even beyond the light cylinder. We present updated VERITAS results from the analysis of a data set that is twice as large as the original data set published in 2011. The results are discussed in the context of discriminating between different models put forward to explain gamma-ray emission mechanisms and acceleration regions within the Crab pulsar's magnetosphere.

Abstract:We present the first strong detection of very high energy gamma-rays from the close (z=0.048) X-ray selected BL Lacertae object 1ES1959+650. Observations were made with the Whipple 10m telescope on Mt. Hopkins, Arizona, using the atmospheric Cherenkov imaging technique. The flux between May and July 2002 was highly variable, with a mean of 0.64 +/- 0.03 times the steady flux from the Crab Nebula and reaching a maximum of five Crab, with variability on timescales as short as seven hours.

Abstract:We present a large survey of giant pulses from the Crab Pulsar as observed with the first station of the Long Wavelength Array. Automated methods for detecting giant pulses at low frequencies where scattering becomes prevalent are also explored. More than 1400 pulses were detected across four frequency bands between 20 - 84 MHz over a seven month period beginning in 2013, with additional followup observations in late 2014 and early 2015. A handful of these pulses were detected simultaneously across all four frequency bands. We examine pulse characteristics, including pulse broadening and power law indices for amplitude distributions. We find that the flux density increases toward shorter wavelengths, consistent with a spectral turnover at 100 MHz. Our observations uniquely span multiple scattering epochs, manifesting as a notable trend in the number of detections per observation. These results are characteristic of the variable interface between the synchrotron nebula and the surrounding interstellar medium.

High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena

Abstract:The Crab pulsar and the surrounding nebula powered by the pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind is a bright source of gamma-rays carrying crucial information about this complex conglomerate. We report the detection of $\gamma$-rays with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades, from $5\times 10^{-4}$ to $1.1$ petaelectronvolt (PeV). The ultra-high-energy photons exhibit the presence of a PeV electron accelerator (a pevatron) with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the absolute theoretical limit. Assuming that unpulsed $\gamma$-rays are produced at the termination of the pulsar's wind, we constrain the pevatron's size, between $0.025$ and $0.1$ pc, and the magnetic field $\approx 110 \mu$G. The production rate of PeV electrons, $2.5 \times 10^{36}$ erg $\rm s^{-1}$, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar's spin-down luminosity, although we do not exclude a non-negligible contribution of PeV protons to the production of the highest energy $\gamma$-rays.

Abstract:Blazars have traditionally been separated into two broad categories based on their optical emission characteristics. Blazars with faint or no emission lines are referred to as BL Lacertae objects ( BL Lacs), and blazars with prominent, broad emission lines are commonly referred to as flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). The spectral energy distribution of FSRQs has generally been thought of as being more akin to the low-peaked BL Lacs, which exhibit a peak in the infrared region of the spectrum, as opposed to high-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs), which exhibit a peak in UV/X-ray region of the spectrum. All blazars that are currently confirmed as sources of TeV emission fall into the HBL category. Recent surveys have found several FSRQs that exhibit spectral properties, particularly the synchrotron peak frequency, similar to HBLs. These objects are potential sources of TeV emission according to several models of blazar jet emission and the evolution of blazars. Measurements of TeV flux or flux upper limits could impact existing theories explaining the links between different blazar types and could have a significant impact on our understanding of the nature of objects that are capable of TeV emission. In particular, the presence ( or absence) of TeV emission from FSRQs could confirm ( or cast doubt on) recent evolutionary models that expect intermediate objects in a transitional state between FSRQ and BL Lac. The Whipple 10 m imaging air Cerenkov gamma-ray telescope is well suited for TeV gamma-ray observations. Using the Whipple telescope, we have taken data on a small selection of nearby (z < 0.1 in most cases) high-peaked FSRQs. Although one of the objects, B2 0321+33, showed marginal evidence of flaring, no significant emission was detected. The implications of this paucity of emission and the derived upper limits are discussed.
