Abstract:This chapter studies the development and basic ideas of Chinese aesthetics by reviewing the history of aesthetic perspective from the Han Dynasty; the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties; the Tang Dynasty; the Five Dynasties; the Song and Yuan Dynasties; and the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The ancient Chinese artists pursued the artistic conception of beauty, namely, the integration of mind and objects, sentiments, and scenes, and the fusion of subjective emotions and objective landscape. Nevertheless, this conception overlooks the function of practice, the intermediary between mind and objects. Actually, there are three fundamental elements: emotion (first feeling) of aesthetic subjects; artistic conception sensed through the painting brush in practice (perception); poetry, books, songs, and paintings as artistic finished products (containing essence and sentiments). It is the combination, conformity, and harmonious co-existence of these three essentials (namely subject–practice–object) that constitute the art system aesthetics or design aesthetics.

Abstract:The works and textbooks on aesthetic theories published by China in the past usually restrict the discussion of the aesthetic scope in the area of Western culture.Beauty and loftiness,tragedy and comedy,ugliness and absurdi-ty,all belong to Western aesthetic scope.For a long time,friends in the scholarly field have been thinking about the possibility of summarizing several aesthetic scopes fromChinese culture history and Chinese arthistory,and of integra-ting them into the framework of basic aesthetic theory.The present article manifests the viewpoint on this problem in the four aspects of aesthetic form and scope,depth,elegance,and intangibility.
The Meaning of ZHU Xi's Thought to Chinese Aesthetics

Abstract:Abstract: The Chinese aesthetic vein can be divided into two sections: the theory of daotifrom the pre-Qin to SIKOGN Tu of the end of Tang Dynasty, and the theory of tidao sincethe Song Dynasty, between which ZHU Xi is found. His category of gewu laid thefoundation for the transition and made the "Thing" one of the focal points of the Chineseaesthetics. His category of hanyong also laid the foundation for the basic connotation ofaesthetic epistemology and deeply revealed the life force of artistic creation and appreciation.

Abstract:Abstract Chinese aesthetics mainly derives from Confucianism and Taoism. This essay attempts to revisit the main theories that run through Confucian and Taoist aesthetics in order to make them comprehensible within a broader global context. Aesthetics in Confucianism pertains to fields as various as literature, art, music and the natural environment. It holds the idea of ren 仁 (human-heartedness) as the essential attribute of beauty. In comparison, Taoist aesthetics emphasizes the centrality of tao 道 (way), which transpires through naturalness, and, as such, considers natural forms to offer the highest degree of beauty. In order to understand variations of representation and interpretation in Confucian and Taoist aesthetics, the essay discusses accordingly the three fundamentals of Chinese aesthetics: beauty, feeling of beauty, and artistic image. This comparative study will hopefully bring to light differences and similarities between two traditions, which may also resonate within the wider context of modern global aesthetics.

Abstract:With the progress of the times, Chinese education must enable students to understand that architecture is not only a tool for life, but also an artistic creation. Architectural aesthetics also involves historical, cultural, and social factors, as well as psychological health. To cultivate architects with good artistic cultivation, it is necessary to increase education in art, aesthetics, psychology, and humanities such as traditional architectural theory, Chinese traditional philosophy, Chinese and Western architectural aesthetics, aesthetic principles, Chinese and foreign art history, mental health, architectural geomantic omen, literature, calligraphy and painting appreciation, sculpture, photography, etc. In recent years, some art colleges in China, such as the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts of Shanghai University, have successively introduced the subject of architecture, which is a great experiment and makes up for the shortcomings of traditional engineering and architecture colleges that focus on technology and light art. In terms of architecture education, it is necessary to cultivate students' creative thinking and enhance their artistic cultivation, and closely unite architectural aesthetics with mental health. In this regard, we are continuously discussing teaching methods, summing up teaching experience, and introducing new ideas to keep pace with the times.

Abstract:Li Zhi's aesthetical ideas will be expounded in three aspects.First,compared with the aesthetical ideas by Kant,Li Zhi focused on the equal identity of aesthetical object and aesthetical subject as well as the independent nature of aesthetical object.Second,in Li Zhi's opinion,nature is both an aesthetical object and response-inviting subject.Third,Li Zhi insisted that life value should be indispensable to it,thus bringing about the personal emancipation and free life aesthetics.
A Consideration on the Path of Development of Chinese Aesthetics

Abstract:The shackle that binds the sunstantial development of Chinese comes from the dual-contrast thinking mode on the basis of epistemology which stings to the view of duality between subject and object. The re-discussion in 1990 on Paris Manuscripts, particularly on Law of Beauty, sufficiently revealed the confinement of the above-mentioned thinking to aesthetic study. And the 1990's argument on practical aesthetics raised several constructive opinions of importance to the development of Chinese aesthetics, but retained some misunderstandings and disputable views. Therefore, the development of aesthetic study won't expect a breakthrough unless it gets rid of the restraint of the mode of epistemological dual-contrast thinking. From this perspective, we conclude that Mr. Jiang Kongyang's theory of aesthetic relationship on the basis of the theory of practice and that of creativity presents a valuable approach to attain the objective.

Abstract:In the last century, many Asian scholars often discussed various aesthetic questions chiefly according to the model of the Western tradition, because it has been generally thought as the birthplace and the nursery of aesthetics itself as a science'. In fact, however, Asian countries do have their own aesthetic traditions rather different from the Western one. This essay will try to present a striking contrast between traditional Chinese and Western aesthetics and thereby show the worldwide significance of Chinese aesthetic tradition in the 21st century. Viewed from the perspective of Chinese aesthetics, beauty is not only of the aesthetic significance in the relation of human being to beautiful things and artworks, but also of the metaphysical significance in human life as a whole, and human being is not only the creator of beautiful things and artworks, but also the creator of her/his own beautiful existence. Indeed, one can both create beautiful things and artworks as aesthetic objects in the external world and feel aesthetic pleasure in the inner world through aesthetic activities only when one's own existence itself becomes beautiful in the metaphysical sense. The insight would definitely enlarge the horizon of the aesthetics of the 21st century and enrich its research contents, and even lift it to the metaphysical level of human existence and make it go beyond the limits of traditional Western aesthetics. Moreover, in consideration of the beautiful as one of the highest states of human life, the aesthetics of the 21st century would make much greater contributions to humankind as well when it tries to reveal the ways in which one is able to beautify one's existence itself in the metaphysical sense.

Abstract:Put forward by Wang Guowei,and perfected by such 20th-century Aestheticians as Zhu Guangqian,Zong Baihua and Li Zehou,the theory of artistic vision has long been regarded as a key category of ancient Chinese poetics,and even labeled as a supreme artistic ideal of Chinese nation.This theory of artistic vision is,however,not indigenous in traditional Chinese aesthetics and poetics,but constructed by the mentioned scholars with an intellectual foundation of German aesthetic tradition.The development of the theory is basically following German tradition in such thematic matters as the unity between sensibility and rationality,subject and object,finite and infinite,as well as generality and particularity,which are unified basis of this theory.In its intellectual essence,the theory is a Chinese version of Germen aesthetics.Its modern construction is a part of the modernization of tradition for the purpose of re-establishing national cultural subjectivity,but in the process of its realization,this modernization of tradition has been turned into otherization of self,thus worsening the intellectual crisis in modern China.

Abstract:Aesthetics is just defined as the definition of art after the influence of analytic philosophy. Aesthetics in narrow sense makes itself isolated from social life and art practice. In order to get rid of this state, some contemporary western aestheticians look back to Alexander Baumgarten and his original definition of aesthetics. According to Baumgarten, aesthetics should cover all of the aesthetic life. Some aestheticians even advocate it can be further regarded as the fundament of philosophy. This inclining of aesthetics in broad sense can be found in Cai Yuan-pei's aesthetics, which is very famous in the beginning of the modernization process of Chinese aesthetics. This comparative study between Cai Yuan-Pei and Baumgarten is not only helpful to re-understand Cai Yuan-pei's aesthetics, but also useful for Chinese aestheticians to find the direction of future aesthetics.

Abstract:In the preface of Strolling in Aesthetics, Mr.Li Zehou contrasted Zhu Guangqian and Zong Baihua , the two great masters of aesthetics , believing that Zhu is a scholar whose aesthetic ide-as are “inferential, modern, Western and scientific” while Zong is a poet with “lyric, classical, Chinese and artistic” ideas.This remark highlights the “strolling” form, poeticized language and classical Chinese characteristics of Zong ’ s aesthetic system , but also let people relatively neglect its philosophical accumulation and logic thinking or even overlook the methodology behind its aesthetic construction.In fact, Zong’ s aesthetic research follows a set of systematic and rigorous methods un-der his vivid and exquisite words , from cross-cultural to interdisciplinary and cross-arts.This set of systematic methods is still of important significance to aesthetic and artistic research today.

Abstract:Through comparisons between traditional Chinese and Western aesthetics, this article tries to explain the worldwide significance of Chinese aesthetic tradition in the twenty-first century. In contrast to cognitive-rational spirit and the tendency to distinguish the subjectives and objectives of traditional Western aesthetics, traditional Chinese aesthetics shows a distinctive practical-emotional spirit and a tendency to harmoniously unite human beings with nature, and believes that beauty is, first and foremost, a free state or way ( Dao ) of human life; the most important thing for human beings is how to make their own lives and existence beautiful. Therefore, it puts forward some persuasive and valuable insights into beauty and art, thus playing an independent and constructive role in intercultural aesthetic dialogues of the twenty-first century.

Abstract:As an advanced form of classical Chinese aesthetics,the aesthetics of Ming dynasty,contains the aesthetic trend that emphasizes the supreme importance of feelings,based on self-expression.In the traditional movement of classical Chinese aesthetics,nature transcends self in Taoism,etiquette and propriety constraints self in Confucianism,and emptiness replaces self in Buddhism.This essay clarifies the historical context of the aesthetics of Ming dynasty,discusses how the literati,who are the subject of the aesthetical activity at that time,changed from the traditional scholar-bureaucrats who pursued benevolence,to the self ignoring benevolence,and discusses the establishment of the theme that accentuates self in the aesthetics of Ming dynasty.

Abstract:This article introduces the aesthetic significance of Chinese calligraphy, one of the highest art forms in China. It focuses on three major aesthetic concerns manifested in classical texts on this art. First, Chinese art theory stresses that the forms (xing) of successful calligraphic works are never static; rather, they should be filled with internal force (shi). Second, calligraphic creation can be understood as a psychosomatic process, that is, involving coordination between the mind and the hand. Third, appreciation of Chinese calligraphy is identified with the process of reconstructing the calligrapher's creation of the work, which is analogous to Richard Wollheim's identifying criticism as retrieval. The last section examines the concept of qi and discusses what kind of aesthetic considerations encourage us to make a connection between Chinese calligraphy and abstract art.

Abstract:A comparative study of Chinese and western philosophy and aesthetics helps to find out the differences between and basic characteristics of Chinese and western aesthetic categories. The study can be carried out from the angles of the disciplinary course and mode of thinking of aesthetic system, of the establishment and existing pattern of Chinese and western aesthetics, and of the historical development of Chinese and western philosophy and aesthetic categories. We find that western aesthetic categories are featured in determinacy, variability, and scientific logical reasoning.

Abstract:In order to find a way to combine traditional culture with modern living needs, taking “Chinese painting” as the breakthrough point, through the study of the development process and artistic characteristics of Chinese painting, four aspects of classical philosophy, natural landscape image, brush and ink composition artistic conception, and abstract aesthetic conception contained in Chinese painting are summed up. The results of the study provide enlightenment for contemporary residential landscape design, and summarize the methods of creating Chinese paintings in residential landscape design. Thus, a residential landscape model with the characteristics of “Chinese painting” is found out.

Abstract:Chinese Aesthetics and Literature Theories by Karl-Heinz Pohl,a famous German sinologist,literature theorist and aesthetician,views the aesthetics and literature theories in ancient China from a "foreign angle".It narrates aesthetics history and literature theory history against the background of thought history and takes a cross-cultural and comparative angle and uses modern hermeneutics method.It is different from works about Chinese aesthetics and literature theory written by the Chinese scholars and boasts some new and instructive elements.It can promote communication between Chinese and western scholars.
