Abstract:Zn metal has received immense interest as a promising anode of rechargeable aqueous batteries for grid-scale energy storage. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable dendrite growth and surface parasitic reactions greatly retard its practical implementation. Herein, we demonstrate a seamless and multifunctional metal-organic framework (MOF) interphase for building corrosion-free and dendrite-free Zn anodes. The on-site coordinated MOF interphase with 3D open framework structure could function as a highly zincophilic mediator and ion sifter that synergistically induces fast and uniform Zn nucleation/deposition. In addition, the surface corrosion and hydrogen evolution are significantly suppressed by the interface shielding of the seamless interphase. An ultrastable Zn plating/stripping is achieved with elevated Coulombic efficiency of 99.2% over 1000 cycles and prolonged lifetime of 1100 h at 10 mA cm-2 with a high cumulative plated capacity of 5.5 Ah cm-2. Moreover, the modified Zn anode assures the MnO2-based full cells with superior rate and cycling performance.

Abstract:Abstract Uncontrollable zinc (Zn) plating and hydrogen evolution greatly undermine Zn anode reversibility. Previous electrolyte designs focus on suppressing H 2 O reactivity, however, the accumulation of alkaline byproducts during battery calendar aging and cycling still deteriorates the battery performance. Here, we present a direct strategy to tackle such problems using a strong Brønsted acid, bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (HTFSI), as the electrolyte additive. This approach reformulates battery interfacial chemistry on both electrodes, suppresses continuous corrosion reactions and promotes uniform Zn deposition. The enrichment of hydrophobic TFSI – anions at the Zn|electrolyte interface creates an H 2 O-deficient micro-environment, thus inhibiting Zn corrosion reactions and inducing a ZnS-rich interphase. This highly acidic electrolyte demonstrates high Zn plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency up to 99.7% at 1 mA cm –2 ( > 99.8% under higher current density and areal capacity). Additionally, Zn | |ZnV 6 O 9 full cells exhibit a high capacity retention of 76.8% after 2000 cycles.

Abstract:Metallic zinc is an ideal anode due to its high theoretical capacity (820 mAh g−1), low redox potential (−0.762 V versus the standard hydrogen electrode), high abundance and low toxicity. When used in aqueous electrolyte, it also brings intrinsic safety, but suffers from severe irreversibility. This is best exemplified by low coulombic efficiency, dendrite growth and water consumption. This is thought to be due to severe hydrogen evolution during zinc plating and stripping, hitherto making the in-situ formation of a solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) impossible. Here, we report an aqueous zinc battery in which a dilute and acidic aqueous electrolyte with an alkylammonium salt additive assists the formation of a robust, Zn2+-conducting and waterproof SEI. The presence of this SEI enables excellent performance: dendrite-free zinc plating/stripping at 99.9% coulombic efficiency in a Ti||Zn asymmetric cell for 1,000 cycles; steady charge–discharge in a Zn||Zn symmetric cell for 6,000 cycles (6,000 h); and high energy densities (136 Wh kg−1 in a Zn||VOPO4 full battery with 88.7% retention for >6,000 cycles, 325 Wh kg−1 in a Zn||O2 full battery for >300 cycles and 218 Wh kg−1 in a Zn||MnO2 full battery with 88.5% retention for 1,000 cycles) using limited zinc. The SEI-forming electrolyte also allows the reversible operation of an anode-free pouch cell of Ti||ZnxVOPO4 at 100% depth of discharge for 100 cycles, thus establishing aqueous zinc batteries as viable cell systems for practical applications.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn batteries have drawn tremendous attention for their several advantages. However, the challenges of Zn anodes such as the corrosion and ZnO densification have compromised their application in rechargeable Zn-based batteries. In this paper, a straightforward strategy is employed to facilitate the uniform Zn stripping/plating of the Zn anode through using a ZrO2 coating layer, which contributes to the controllable nucleation sites for Zn2+ and fast Zn2+ transportation through the favorable Maxwell-Wagner polarization. As a result, the low polarization (24 mV at 0.25 mA cm(-2)), high Coulombic efficiency (99.36% at 20 mA cm(-2)), and long cycle life (over 3800 h at 0.25 mA cm(-2)) can be obtained for the ZrO2-coated Zn anode. It is believed that the ZrO2 coating layer can also act as an inert physical barrier to decrease the contact of the anode and electrolyte, thus reducing both the Zn corrosion and formation of ZnO densification, and then improve the reversibility of Zn anode. The results demonstrated in this work provide an appealing strategy for the future development of rechargeable Zn-based batteries.

Abstract:Since the invention of the first battery by Volta in 1796, metallic zinc has been regarded as an ideal anode material for the aqueous batteries systems for its high theoretical capacity (820 mAh/g), low negative potential (-0.762 V vs. SHE), abundance, low toxicity and the intrinsic safety advantages that arise from nonflammable aqueous electrolytes. Recently, rechargeable batteries using zinc metal anode have been investigated extensively. However, an important barrier of the Zn-based batteries is the poor cycle life, which mainly derives from the drawbacks of the Zn metal anode and the electrolyte. The cyclability of the traditional alkaline Zn-based batteries is mainly restricted by dendrite growth, high solubility of discharge product (i.e. zincate) in the electrolytes, water loss from the liquid electrolyte, electrolyte depletion caused by the narrow electrochemical window. In most previous studies, the zinc-based aqueous batteries suffered from low columbic efficiency (CE) even using the high rate to minimize the side reaction, which means the Zn-based batteries usually require regular topping up with electrolyte. Significant excessive zinc has to been used to keep the cycle stability, results in sub-optimal utilization of the zinc theoretical capacity, as in the case of the lithium metal anode. The goal of achieving high CE in aqueous zinc metal batteries remained allusive. The poor reversibility and low CE of the Zn metal anode is closely related with the Zn (II) cation solvate structure in the aqueous electrolyte. The hydration effects of the Zn (II) cation in water is so significant that the zinc hydroxide is easily forms. The slight but non-ignorable water decomposition caused by the narrow stability window produces more hydroxyl ion and certainly aggravates the formation of zinc hydroxide. Zinc hydroxide converts into insoluble zinc oxide (ZnO) when the solubility limit of the hydroxide species is reached. Formation of solid ZnO can be a difficult process to reverse during recharge, as it relies on the resolubilization of the Zn species back into the electrolyte prior to reduction. We report the development of a highly concentrated neutral electrolyte that alters Zn(II) solvation structure resulting in the dendrite-free plating of Zn metal with high CE. The suppression of the zinc hydration was achieved through the formation of [Zn-TFSI] solvation structure instead of the [Zn-6H2O]2+ solvation structure. The solvation structure change is ascribed to the introduction of the TFSI- anion, which has strong coordination to the Zn (II) cation in concentrated electrolytes. The solvation structure change was investigated via a combination of IR spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using polarizable force fields. We demonstrate an exceptional performance of zinc metal cells containing Zn-based aqueous electrolyte that delivered an unprecedented high practical energy density of 300Wh/kg (based on both the cathode and anode electrodes). This study opens an avenue for the highly efficient utilization of zinc metal electrodes for advanced energy storage applications while the fundamental knowledge gained can also be applied to other metal anodes.
Synergistic Cation Solvation Reorganization and Fluorinated Interphase for High Reversibility and Utilization of Zinc Metal Anode

Abstract:Batteries based on zinc (Zn) chemistry offer a great opportunity for large-scale applications owing to their safety, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. However, the poor Zn reversibility and inhomogeneous electrodeposition have greatly impeded their practical implementation, stemming from water-related passivation/corrosion. Here, we present a multifunctional electrolyte comprising gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) and Zn(BF4)2·xH2O to resolve these intrinsic challenges. The systematic results confirm that water reactivity toward a Zn anode is minimized by forcing GBL solvents into the Zn2+ solvation shell and constructing a fluorinated interphase on the Zn anode surface via anion decomposition. Furthermore, NMR was selected as an auxiliary testing protocol to elevate and understand the role of electrolyte composition in building the interphase. The combined factors in synergy guarantee high Zn reversibility (average Coulombic efficiency is 99.74%), high areal capacity (55 mAh/cm2), and high Zn utilization (∼91%). Ultimately, these merits enable the Zn battery utilizing a VO2 cathode to operate smoothly over 5000 cycles with a low-capacity decay rate of ∼0.0083% per cycle and a 0.23 Ah VO2/Zn pouch cell to operate over 400 cycles with a capacity retention of 77.3%.

Abstract:Zinc metal batteries are strongly hindered by water corrosion, as solvated zinc ions would bring the active water molecules to the electrode/electrolyte interface constantly. Herein, we report a sacrificial solvation shell to repel active water molecules from the electrode/electrolyte interface and assist in forming a fluoride-rich, organic-inorganic gradient solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer. The simultaneous sacrificial process of methanol and Zn(CF3SO3)2 results in the gradient SEI layer with an organic-rich surface (CH2OC- and C5 product) and an inorganic-rich (ZnF2) bottom, which combines the merits of fast ion diffusion and high flexibility. As a result, the methanol additive enables corrosion-free zinc stripping/plating on copper foils for 300 cycles with an average coulombic efficiency of 99.5%, a record high cumulative plating capacity of 10 A h/cm2 at 40 mA/cm2 in Zn/Zn symmetrical batteries. More importantly, at an ultralow N/P ratio of 2, the practical VO2//20 μm thick Zn plate full batteries with a high areal capacity of 4.7 mAh/cm2 stably operate for over 250 cycles, establishing their promising application for grid-scale energy storage devices. Furthermore, directly utilizing the 20 μm thick Zn for the commercial-level areal capacity (4.7 mAh/cm2) full zinc battery in our work would simplify the manufacturing process and boost the development of the commercial zinc battery for stationary storage.
A Lean‐Zinc and Zincophilic Anode for Highly Reversible Zinc Metal Batteries

Abstract:A higher lattice matching will contribute to formulating a coherent interface, which can lower the nucleation barrier and promote more even zinc deposition. In this work, a and zincophilic anode structure based on a ZnCo bimetallic organic framework‐derived carbon, which enables the construction of highly reversible, long‐life, and anode‐lean Zn0 full cells when coupling with zinc‐containing cathodes, is reported. Lean‐zinc anode is a promising configuration that can eliminate the trade‐off of energy density and cycle lifetime of zinc metal (Zn0) batteries. However, there are rare investigations of lean‐Zn anode designs and it remains a grand change to sustain high zinc reversibility under lean zinc conditions. Herein, a lean‐Zn anode design based on a hierarchical and zincophilic cobalt metal (Co0) nanowire‐decorated carbon host, which is derived from a ZnCo bimetallic organic framework, is reported. Within the lean‐Zn anode, the trace amount of Zn0 acts as a zinc reservoir to make up for any irreversible loss of zinc source upon cycling, while the zincophilic Co0 nanowires can guide uniform zinc nucleation and growth through a lattice matching mechanism. Consequently, high Zn0 reversibility (average Coulomb efficiency of 99.6% for 4250 cycles), low nucleation overpotential (50.8 mV at 1 mA cm−2), and uniform and compact zinc electrodeposition are realized. When coupling the lean‐Zn anode with a Zn‐containing cathode, the full cell delivers high Coulomb efficiency (99.6% for 4250 cycles on average) and a long lifetime of more than 5000 cycles.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous Zn metal batteries are promising for large-scale renewable energy storage. However, the aqueous Zn metal battery chemistry encounters severe irreversibility issues, as manifested by the non-uniform metallic Zn plating and undesired side-reactions of corrosion. Herein, we report a highly-reversible aqueous Zn metal anode with accurately controlled nanopore structure, by which the space charge distribution could be regulated and interface-localized concentrated electrolyte was enabled. Consequently, the nanoporous Zn (npZn) electrode exhibited high electrochemical reversibility for 750 h under the measurement with a combination of electrochemically Zn stripping/plating cycling (1 mA cm-2 and 1 mAh cm-2 for 25 cycles) and resting (50 h), and looping. Moreover, a npZn||NaVO3 cell exhibited a high capacity of 200 mAh g-1 and a long lifespan with considerable capacity retention (76% for 1500 cycles), and high reversibility (Coulombic efficiency of 99.8%), which was more stable than the counterpart with pristine Zn anode (short-circuit after 600 cycles).

Abstract:Aqueous Zn metal batteries are promising for large-scale energy storage. However, their implementation is limited by the irreversible Zn anodes. Herein, the biphasic electrolyte based on the “salting out” effect is proposed to comprehensively enhance the electrochemical performance. The organic-rich phase electrolyte on the Zn anode side not only decreases the water content but also manipulates the Zn2+ solvation structure. Additionally, a uniform ZnOHF solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) is formed in situ. This synergy contributes to suppressing water-triggered parasitic reactions and dendrite growth, resulting in a high average Coulombic efficiency (99.68% over 400 cycles) and prolonged cycling lifespans. On the cathode side, the aqueous phase electrolyte maintains fast ionic conductivity and modifies the electrode/electrolyte interface property because of residual organic molecules, which accelerates the redox kinetics. The Zn//PANI full cell with biphasic electrolyte performs much better with regard to rate, cycling, and storage performance than a cell with a conventional aqueous ZnSO4 electrolyte.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn ion batteries are receiving tremendous attention owing to their attractive features with respect to safety, cost, and scalability, yet their lifespan is severely limited by the poor reversibility of the Zn metal anode. Thereby, an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (ASEI) based on an anionic metal–organic framework (MOF) is in situ fabricated on the surface of Zn anodes. The robust ASEI protects the anode from side reactions and largely promotes its Coulombic efficiency during battery cycling. Owing to the high intrinsic Zn2+ conductivity and abundant zincophilic sites, it also facilitates enhanced Zn redox activities. More interestingly, the consecutive sulfonate groups in the MOF channels guide rapid and directional transport of Zn ions and thus endow a dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping lifespan of 5700 h at 2 mA cm–2. This work provides a fresh strategy to promote the performance of Zn and even other metallic anodes toward practical battery applications.

Abstract:The Zn metal anode suffers from uncontrollable dendrite formation and intricate parasitic reactions that dramatically impede the commercialization of aqueous Zn metal batteries (AZMBs). This st proposes synergistic strategies for facilitating Zn2+ migration kinetics and regulating surface energy to achieve dendrite-free Zn deposition and suppressing self-corrosion by covering Zn anode with multifunctional covalent organic frameworks possessing sulfonate-rich (-SO3H) covalently-tethered nanochannels (SCOFs). Benefiting from the vital interplay between -SO3H and Zn2+, the SCOFs coatings form ample Zn2+ accelerated transport channels to extract Zn2+ from the electrolyte quickly, thereby promoting rapid desolvation of hydrated Zn2+, enhancing ion replenishment capability, and guaranteeing a steady stream of Zn2+ flux for endowing uniform and compact nucleation. Additionally, the zincophilic SCOFs significantly reduce the surface energy of the Zn (002) crystal plane, inducing preferentially crystallographic (002) orientation electroplating growth. Consequently, the SCOFs-coated Zn anodes (SCOFs@Zn) demonstrate an excellent lifespan up to 4000 h at 5 mA cm(-2), 1 mAh cm(-2), and 3000 h at 5 mA cm(-2), 2 mAh cm(-2). Meanwhile, the full cell paired with the MnO2 cathode sustains remarkable reversibility within 1000 cycles. The synergistic approach to manipulating ion migration and surface energy provides new insights into developing highly stable AZMBs.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) are considered to be one of the most promising energy storage devices in the post-lithium-ion era with fast ionic conductivity, safety, and low cost. However, excessive accumulation of zinc dendrites will fracture and produce dead zinc, resulting in the unsatisfied utilization rate of Zn anodes, which greatly restricts the lifespan of the battery and reduces the reversibility. In this paper, by constructing a protective layer of ZnSnO3 hollow nanospheres in situ growth on the surface of the Zn anode, more zincophilic sites are established on the electrode surface. It demonstrates that uniform deposition of Zn ions by deepening the binding energy with Zn ion and its unique hollow structure shortens the diffusion distance of Zn ions and enhances the reaction kinetics. The assembled Zn-ion hybrid supercapacitor (ZHSC) of ZnSnO3@Zn//AC achieved a long-term lifespan with 4000 cycles at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with a Coulombic efficiency of 99.31% and capacity retention of 79.6%. This work offers a new path for advanced Zn anodes interphase supporting the long cycle life with large capacities and improving electrochemical reversibility.

Abstract:The propensity to form irregular and nonplanar Zn electrodeposits during repeated stripping/plating cycles is a main cause of the short lifetime of secondary Zn metal batteries, drawing the focus on strategies allowing for the homogenous growth of Zn over cycling. Here, we report on a highly reversible Zn chemistry in which a typical zinc sulfate electrolyte with added phosphoric acid ensures the (002) epitaxial growth on the (002)-textured Zn foil for a long term (> 1500 hours, 1500 cycles). Moreover, the phosphoric acid additive assists in the formation of a Zn2+-conducting solid-electrolyte interphase, further improving the reversibility of the negative Zn electrode. As a result, the coulombic efficiency of a Zn||Ti asymmetric cell within 500 cycles is 96.7% on average. The highly reversible Zn chemistry significantly improves the rate capability and cycling stability of Zn||MnO2 cells. More importantly, a Zn||O2 cell can be cycled for 50 hours at a high depth of discharge of the zinc anode (10-20%). The simple but effective texturing agent makes aqueous Zn metal batteries competitive for practical applications.

Abstract:Abstract Aqueous zinc (Zn) chemistry features intrinsic safety, but suffers from severe irreversibility, as exemplified by low Coulombic efficiency, sustained water consumption and dendrite growth, which hampers practical applications of rechargeable Zn batteries. Herein, we report a highly reversible aqueous Zn battery in which the graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots additive serves as fast colloid ion carriers and assists the construction of a dynamic & self-repairing protective interphase. This real-time assembled interphase enables an ion-sieving effect and is found actively regenerate in each battery cycle, in effect endowing the system with single Zn 2+ conduction and constant conformal integrality, executing timely adaption of Zn deposition, thus retaining sustainable long-term protective effect. In consequence, dendrite-free Zn plating/stripping at ~99.6% Coulombic efficiency for 200 cycles, steady charge-discharge for 1200 h, and impressive cyclability (61.2% retention for 500 cycles in a Zn | |MnO 2 full battery, 73.2% retention for 500 cycles in a Zn | |V 2 O 5 full battery and 93.5% retention for 3000 cycles in a Zn | |VOPO 4 full battery) are achieved, which defines a general pathway to challenge Lithium in all low-cost, large-scale applications.

Toward Practical High‐Areal‐Capacity Aqueous Zinc‐Metal Batteries: Quantifying Hydrogen Evolution and a Solid‐Ion Conductor for Stable Zinc Anodes

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution in Zn metal battery is accurately quantified by in situ battery-gas chromatography-mass analysis. The hydrogen fluxes reach 3.76 mmol h-1 cm-2 in a Zn//Zn symmetric cell in each segment, and 7.70 mmol h-1 cm-2 in a Zn//MnO2 full cell. Then, a highly electronically insulating (0.11 mS cm-1 ) but highly Zn2+ ion conductive (80.2 mS cm-1 ) ZnF2 solid ion conductor with high Zn2+ transfer number (0.65) is constructed to isolate Zn metal from liquid electrolyte, which not only prohibits over 99.2% parasitic hydrogen evolution but also guides uniform Zn electrodeposition. Precisely quantitated, the Zn@ZnF2 //Zn@ZnF2 cell only produces 0.02 mmol h-1 cm-2 of hydrogen (0.53% of the Zn//Zn cell). Encouragingly, a high-areal-capacity Zn@ZnF2 //MnO2 (≈3.2 mAh cm-2 ) full cell only produces maximum hydrogen flux of 0.06 mmol h-1 cm-2 (0.78% of the Zn//Zn cell) at the fully charging state. Meanwhile, Zn@ZnF2 //Zn@ZnF2 symmetric cell exhibits excellent stability under ultrahigh current density and areal capacity (10 mA cm-2 , 10 mAh cm-2 ) over 590 h (285 cycles), which far outperforms all reported Zn metal anodes in aqueous systems. In light of the superior Zn@ZnF2 anode, the high-areal-capacity aqueous Zn@ZnF2 //MnO2 batteries (≈3.2 mAh cm-2 ) shows remarkable cycling stability over 1000 cycles with 93.63% capacity retained at ≈100% Coulombic efficiency.

Abstract:AbstractMetallic Zn is a preferred anode material for rechargeable aqueous batteries towards a smart grid and renewable energy storage. Understanding how the metal nucleates and grows at the aqueous Zn anode is a critical and challenging step to achieve full reversibility of Zn battery chemistry, especially under fast‐charging conditions. Here, by combining in situ optical imaging and theoretical modeling, we uncover the critical parameters governing the electrodeposition stability of the metallic Zn electrode, that is, the competition among crystallographic thermodynamics, kinetics, and Zn2+‐ion diffusion. Moreover, steady‐state Zn metal plating/stripping with Coulombic efficiency above 99 % is achieved at 10–100 mA cm−2 in a reasonably high concentration (3 M) ZnSO4 electrolyte. Significantly, a long‐term cycling‐stable Zn metal electrode is realized with a depth of discharge of 66.7 % under 50 mA cm−2 in both Zn||Zn symmetrical cells and MnO2||Zn full cells.
Dual-phase interface engineering via parallel modulation strategy for highly reversible Zn metal batteries

Abstract:The reversibility and stability of aqueous Zn metal batteries (AZMBs) are largely limited by Zn dendrites and interfacial parasitic reactions. Herein, we propose a parallel modulation strategy to boost the reversibility of the Zn anode by introducing N , N , N' , N' -tetramethylchloroformamidinium hexafluorophosphate (TCFH) as an additive in the electrolyte. TCFH is composed of PF 6 − and TN + with opposite charges. PF 6 − can spontaneously induce the in-situ generation of ZnF 2 solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the anode, which can improve the transport kinetics of Zn 2+ at the interface, thus promoting the rapid and uniform deposition of Zn as well as inhibiting the growth of dendrites. In addition, TN + is enriched at the anode surface during Zn deposition through the anchoring effect, which brings a reconfiguration of the ion/molecule distribution. The anchored-TN + reduces the concentrations of H 2 O and SO 4 2− , sufficiently restraining the parasitic reaction. Thanks to the dual-phase interface engineering constructed of PF 6 − and TN + in parallel, the symmetric cell with the proposed electrolyte survives long cycling stability over 750 h at 20 mA cm −2 , 10 mAh cm −2 . This study offers a distinct viewpoint to the multidimensional optimization of Zn anodes for high-performance AZMBs.

Abstract:Significant challenges remain in developing rechargeable zinc batteries mainly because of reversibility problems on zinc-metal anodes. The dendritic growth and hydrogen evolution on zinc electrodes are major obstacles to overcome in developing practical and safe zinc batteries. Here, a dendrite-free and hydrogen-free Zn-metal anode with high Coulombic efficiency up to 99.6% over 300 cycles is realized in a newly designed nonaqueous electrolyte, which comprises an inexpensive zinc salt, zinc acetate, and a green low-cost solvent, dimethyl sulfoxide. Surface transformation on Cu substrate plays a critical role in facilitating the dendrite-free deposition process, which lowers the diffusion energy barrier of the Zn atoms, leading to a uniform and compact thin film for zinc plating. Furthermore, in situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy reveals the plating process via a layer-by-layer growth mechanism and the stripping process through an edge-dissolution mechanism. In addition, Zn||Mo6 S8 full cells exhibit excellent electrochemical performance in terms of cycling stability and rate capability. This work presents a new opportunity to develop nonaqueous rechargeable zinc batteries.
