New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development

Abstract:Learning constitutes a main developmental context for children everywhere. Learning-related emotions can affect cognition, motivation, and achievement and are associated with parenting. Studies on learning-related emotions and how parenting is associated with a child's emotional development in learning have been less conclusive for Chinese children. This article provides an overview of the literature on related emotions as experienced in academic settings in Chinese culture and their relations with parenting. The research on academic, achievement, and domain-specific emotions is presented from a culture-specific perspective. After stressing the functions of emotions for learning and achievement, we discuss the complex relationship between emotions and parenting in the learning context. We propose an integrated model of emotion, parenting, self, and achievement in learning to understand the mechanisms of the interactions between emotions and parenting from a culture-specific perspective. Implications for future research are identified.

Promotion of social and emotional learning in a Chinese elementary school

Abstract:Although there is substantial evidence for the merits of integrating social and emotional learning (SEL) into educational settings, little empirical research on this learning approach has been conducted in Mainland China. We synthesized the frameworks of Western SEL and the guidelines of Chinese mental health education, and conducted a preliminary assessment of a short-term SEL curriculum that we designed and piloted in an elementary school. We randomly assigned two classes comprising 111 fifth-grade students to take the SEL curriculum (intervention group), and compared them with a third class comprising 53 fifth-grade students assigned the usual curriculum (control group). The results show that the intervention group had a significant increase in emotional intelligence scores after completing the activities in the curriculum, and the control group experienced an increase in feelings of competitiveness. Students in the intervention group generally perceived the SEL curriculum as striking the right balance between enjoyable activities and valuable learning. Our findings imply that it would be a positive educational development to design SEL curricula for systematic use across multiple grades, thus weaving these into the formal Chinese elementary school system.

Abstract:Background: In the evolving landscape of Chinese education, understanding the factors that influence the emotional health and engagement of English language learners is increasingly vital. Against this backdrop, our study delves into how teachers' autonomy-supportive behavior, teachers' harmony, and peer support impact these key educational outcomes. Aim: This study investigates the roles of teachers' autonomy-supportive behavior, teachers' harmony, and peer support in influencing the emotional health and engagement of English language learners in China. Method: Involving a diverse sample of 68 English Language Teachers and their 389 students from various Chinese universities, the study leverages a convenience sampling method. Results: Key findings indicate that students' emotional health is predominantly influenced by peer support, while student engagement is significantly affected by a combination of teachers' autonomy-supportive behavior, peer support, and teachers' harmony. These outcomes highlight the importance of both teacher behavior and peer relationships in educational settings, underscoring their crucial roles in enhancing student well-being and engagement. The study's methodology, incorporating a diverse sample from multiple educational institutions and a comprehensive analytical approach, offers robust insights. However, the limitations of convenience sampling and reliance on self-reported data necessitate a careful interpretation of the findings. Implications: Implications from this research are vital for educational policy and practice, emphasizing the need for interventions that enhance teacher-student relationships and foster supportive peer environments. This study adds to the body of knowledge on factors influencing emotional health and engagement among English language learners, advocating for a comprehensive approach in educational strategies and interventions.

Abstract:This paper examines the significant impact of teachers' emotional intelligence and joyful performance in the classroom on students' positive efforts, class atmosphere, and academic performance. Based on educational psychology, it advocates that the emotional dynamics between teachers and students are indispensable in creating the best learning environment. The first part discusses the importance of emotional intelligence in teachers, emphasizing its role in cultivating strong teacher-student relationships and responsive class management. In the following section, the impact of teacher's emotional expression on students' active participation and the creation of class atmosphere was studied, indicating that positive emotions can significantly improve students' enthusiasm for participation and overall learning experience. In addition, this paper also explores responsive educational practices and emotion control strategies as important factors for effective class management. In addition, he also mentioned the influence of Professor Joy on improving learning motivation and developing innovative educational methodologies. This paper emphasizes mindfulness, reflective thinking, support from colleagues, and professional skill development, and concludes with a strategy to enhance teaching pleasure. By integrating these elements, teachers can not only improve students' academic performance, but also help them achieve emotional happiness and development.

Abstract:Excessive rationalization in educational governance leads to a lack of emotion and a range of problems. Family and school are natural allies in emotional education, and collaboration between the two will realize the holistic life development of students, the school's goal of comprehensive education, and the family's valuable function of providing a nurturing education. Following the path of emotional development and the logic of collaboration, the governance of emotional education with school-family collaboration in mainland China has been explored in both institutionalized and non-institutionalized aspects, achieving certain results. In the future, emotional education governance with school-family collaboration should be based on the perspective of integrating emotions and collaboration to establish happiness as a goal of emotional education, to build a school-family relationship that is attentive to ethics, and to implement harmonious but different educational strategies to highlight Chinese cultural characteristics.

Abstract:As a source of aesthetic education in the new era, the Chinese language subject is profoundly related to art education, personality cultivation and emotional cultivation, and is of great significance to the realisation of the goal of cultivating morality. This study is a qualitative research that will analyse the problems of aesthetic education existing in Chinese language teaching in the new era from the connotation of aesthetic education in the new era. A representative poem, a travelogue and a biography are used as case studies. Based on the disciplinary characteristics of Chinese teaching, we will try to explore the implementation path to solve the problems of aesthetic education through cross-disciplinary learning. In this study, instructors attempted to break through the boundaries between the Chinese language curriculum teaching and the arts curriculum teaching, to enhance the synthesis of subject knowledge, and to guide learners to enjoy the beauty of the pictures described in the text. Ultimately, this study is expected to provide valuable insights and potential solutions for integrating aesthetic education in the Chinese language curriculum in the new era, providing guidance for educators and policy makers.

Abstract:Emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in children's development. It has been shown in previous studies that emotional intelligence not only influences academic performance but also benefits children's social and interpersonal lives. This study proposes a new strategy that integrates dialogical reading with visible thinking routines to develop young children's emotional intelligence. Children's books have been shown to benefit the development of young children's emotional skills. This study builds upon past research by utilizing visible thinking routines during dialogic reading of both children's books and self-made books to create an engaging and comfortable environment for young children to demonstrate and practice their emotional knowledge and skills. A mixed class of sixteen kindergarten and first-grade children, mostly immigrants from Central America, participated in this study. Through classroom observations and monitoring of the children's interactions and performance over time, the intervention was found to develop children's performance in these key areas of emotional intelligence: recognition, expression, regulation, and empathy.

Abstract:Social-emotional learning is an important way for the development of quality education, and together with the core competencies of the English subject, it points to the educational goal of “comprehensive development”. This article takes multiple junior high school English classroom teaching as an example to explore how to use social-emotional learning to guide English teaching, enhance students’ social-emotional abilities, achieve character and ability development, and promote the improvement of core competence from three aspects: using real problems, using authentic tasks, and using realistic assessments. Teachers can introduce real problems and create real discourse situations to lead students to have in-depth emotional experiences. Teachers can design authentic tasks that are related to students’ real-life situations and guide students to complete teaching tasks and solve problems while exploring the cultural connotations behind them, so as to realize the integration of language and culture. Teachers can organize authentic and diversified teaching evaluations to cultivate students to become warm and thoughtful learners.

Abstract:To explore the relationship between resilience, engagement, and burnout among Chinese senior high school students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL), this study delves into relatively lesser-examined aversive emotions in language education. It sheds light on how these learners experience and manage these emotions in the in the Chinese senior high school EFL education context. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this study acknowledges the spectrum of emotional experiences in language learning, ranging from positive states like engagement to negative states like burnout and disengagement. The rationale for combining these three variables—burnout, resilience, and engagement—lies in their interconnected nature in the emotional landscape of language learning. Through semi-structured interviews with 25 senior high school students and subsequent analysis using MAXQDA software, this study uncovers how learning environment factors, course content, teacher-student interactions, and individual motivations significantly influence these emotional states. This study not only advances our understanding of the emotional dynamics of senior high school EFL learners, but also offers practical insights for educators and policymakers, which may contribute to a comprehensive exploration of how resilience, engagement, and burnout shape the learning experiences of Chinese senior high school EFL learners.

Identity and emotion of university English teachers during curriculum reform in China

Abstract:Limited attention has been given to the emotions of university English teachers in their identity constructions in the context of curriculum reform in China. Drawing upon the identity control theory (ICT), this qualitative study examines how six teachers negotiate their emotions during curriculum reform in China. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. Findings indicate that teachers experience a variety of emotions in response to the curriculum reform and that the emotions are triggered by teachers’ identity constructions. Based on the findings and ICT, this study proposes a model that delineates the interplay between self-identity, performance outcome, and teacher emotion in the context of curriculum reform. The model explicates that congruence between teachers’ self-identities and the identities imposed by the reform contributes to positive emotions and vice versa. Adding to the original ICT, this study suggests that teachers’ performance outcomes (i.e. teaching outcome and student performance) are likely to influence the (non-)verification of role performance and teacher emotion. In addition, this study reveals the factors that influence teachers’ role performances in the reform, including rapid changes in education policy, stressful teaching evaluations, the instruction of ideological and political thoughts in English courses, and teachers’ insufficient computer skills.

Abstract:The research focuses on the problem of incorporating emotional intelligence in the educational process in primary school. The research provides theoretical substantiation and practical elaboration of the methodology of the formation of emotional intelligence in the English lessons in primary school. The formation of emotional intelligence in the process of teaching reading presupposes involving young learners in appropriate activities that will promote the development of the cognitive, controlling, motivational, empathetic and social functions of emotional competence. To develop these functions, a modern English teacher of primary school should create favourable conditions for learners’ self-actualisation, cooperation with peers, manifestation of their leadership qualities, learner autonomy, awareness and understanding of their own and other people’s feelings and emotions. The aim of the study is to develop a system of exercises for the formation of emotional intelligence in primary school learners in the process of teaching them to read in English. The research was conducted with the help of theoretical methods (analysis of psychological, pedagogical, and methodological literature, LifeComp and the Concept of the New Ukrainian School) and empirical methods (methodological experiment to test the methodology suggested, methods of mathematical statistics to process experimental data). As a result, the current state of scientific ideas concerning the problem of the formation of emotional intelligence has been analyzed. The psychological characteristics of primary school learners have been studied, and the need to take them into account in the process of forming emotional intelligence in the English lessons has been justified. The notions of emotional competence and social-emotional skills have been specified; a system of exercises focused on the formation of emotional intelligence in primary school learners in the process of teaching them to read in English has been developed and illustrated with a set of exercises for a thematic cycle of English lessons. The experimental teaching proves the validity of the suggested methodology, which enables us to conclude that due to the balanced approach to the formation of emotional intelligence and reading skills in primary school learners, the average increase in the experimental and control groups constituted 86,2% and 32,3% correspondently.

Abstract:Cultural inheritance and education is an important part of social development, primary school is an important period for children to receive cultural education, we should not only pay attention to the study of cultural courses but also pay attention to the infiltration of emotional education. With the development of the Internet, cloud technology and big data information in the field of education, the establishment of various education platforms and learning platforms has an increasing impact on primary school Chinese teaching. Based on this background, the purpose of this study is to combine the advanced technology of big data information with the efficient Chinese teaching in primary schools to improve the teaching quality. The research idea of this paper is to use big data information analysis and calculation in the emotional infiltration education of primary school Chinese teaching, analyze and demonstrate the data through the form of questionnaire and interview, and design the research scheme of how to effectively infiltrate emotional education in primary school Chinese teaching from the perspective of big data from the perspective of theory and practice. The research results of this paper show that in the emotional penetration education of Chinese teaching in primary schools, the proportion that the learning quality is affected by big data technology accounts for 67%, and the proportion that the emotional education has a positive impact on students accounts for 63%. The research results indicate that the active application of big data technology can effectively improve the quality of education and benefit the physical and mental health development of students. However, most teachers have little understanding and application of big data, and there is also the irrational phenomenon of emphasizing cognition and ignoring emotion.

Abstract:The English curriculum at the stage of compulsory education is of the dual nature of instrumentality and humanity. When it comes to humanity, the task of English curriculum is to improve students’ comprehensive humanity qualities, one of which is to deepen their understanding of different cultures. Cultural awareness is a reflection of the core literacy in English learning. The cultivation of students’ cultural awareness not only contributes to students’ strengthening of national identity, enhancing of cultural self-confidence in the traditional culture of the nation, but also helps develop an inclusive attitude towards excellent foreign cultures, thereby improving their cross-cultural communication competence. Since the textbooks are regarded as core teaching materials, it is essential for textbooks to contain various cross-cultural elements to better cultivate learners’ cultural awareness. Therefore, cultural content in English textbooks is a necessary issue to be investigated. This paper took 6A Unit 8 Chinese New Year (Yilin Edition) as an example to integrate more cultural knowledge into the specific teaching design. The results in this paper reveal that teachers play four roles in primary school English teaching in terms of raising students’ cultural awareness, namely, the emotion motivator, the cognition inspirator, the behavior guide and the morality regulator.

Abstract:As part of the continued effort to advocate multilingual education, China has recently included German, French, and Spanish as subjects in secondary education. Secondary teachers teaching these languages other than English (LOTEs) may confront new challenges and opportunities, potentially making their professional lives emotionally intense. We therefore take teachers teaching German in Chinese secondary schools as examples and examine their emotions, including the emotion types and the reasons behind those emotions. Using a mixed method, the study surveyed 136 Chinese German teachers nationwide, and then conducted follow-up interviews with 20 participants. The study reveals that the Chinese German teachers experienced more positive emotions than negative ones. The positive emotions were mostly associated with positive interactions in their school settings, followed by their teacher knowledge, interests, and personality, while opportunities created by the development of the German subject constituted an additional factor. Implications for how to enhance LOTE teachers’ emotional experiences are discussed. FUNDING INFORMATION.
