Abstract:Aqueous binders offer the advantage of greener, less toxic processing of battery electrodes. While such aqueous binders have been successfully utilized in anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), environmentally sustainable alternatives to polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) binders have not yet been successful for LIB cathodes. Here, carboxylic acid functionalized cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-COOHs) have been obtained from Miscanthus x. Giganteus (MxG) biomass and evaluated as aqueous binders for LIB cathodes. The amphiphilic characteristics of CNC-COOHs facilitate the formation of homogenous slurries, thereby enabling uniform cathode active material coatings on current collectors. As a result, spinel LiMn2O4 (LMO) and LiCoO2 (LCO) cathodes combined with CNC-COOHs binders exhibit improved electrochemical performance compared with the same cathodes with conventional PVDF binders. Overall, this work establishes CNC-COOH as a promising environmentally sustainable alternative binder to PVDF for LIB cathodes.
