Abstract:Compared with traditional lithium-ion systems, solid-state batteries could achieve high safety and energy density. Although great improvements have been made, especially in solid-state electrolyte, fundamental challenges still remain in the solid-state systems in terms of chemistry and mechanics. This review summarizes the fundamental issues in solid-state batteries with a focus on three critical phenomena: (i) the principles of developing high ionic conductors, (ii) structural evolution at chemically unstable electrolyte-electrode interfaces, and (iii) the effects of manufacturing solid-state batteries, including electrode, electrolyte design. The future perspectives are also outlined to guide the development of solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Recent worldwide efforts to establish solid-state batteries as a potentially safe and stable high-energy and high-rate electrochemical storage technology still face issues with long-term performance, specific power and economic viability. Here, we review key challenges that still involve the need for fast-conducting solid electrolytes to provide sufficient transport in composite cathodes. In addition, we show that high-performance anodes together with protection concepts are paramount to establish dense high-energy solid-state batteries and that lithium-based solid-state batteries as well as metal anodes may not be the ultimate solution. We further discuss that diversity in terms of materials, research teams and approaches is key to establish long-term solid-state batteries. About ten years after the first ground-breaking publication of lithium solid electrolytes with an ionic conductivity higher than that of liquid electrolytes, it is time to realistically address the remaining key challenges for full-scale commercialization, cell performance and implementation.

Abstract:Secondary batteries based on metal anodes (e.g., Li, Na, Mg, Zn, and Al) are among the most sought-after candidates for next-generation mobile and stationary storage systems because they are able to store a larger amount of energy per unit mass or volume. However, unstable electrodeposition and uncontrolled interfacial reactions occuring in liquid electrolytes cause unsatisfying cell performance and potential safety concerns for the commercial application of these metal anodes. Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) having a higher modulus are considered capable of inhibiting difficulties associated with the anodes and may enable building of safe all-solid-state metal batteries, yet several challenges, such as insufficient room-temperature ionic conductivity and poor interfacial stability between the electrode and the electrolyte, hinder the large-scale development of such batteries. Here, research and development of SSEs including inorganic ceramics, organic solid polymers, and organic-inorganic hybrid/composite materials for metal-based batteries are reviewed. The comparison of different types of electrolytes is discussed in detail, in the context of electrochemical energy storage applications. Then, the focus of this study is on recent advances in a range of attractive and innovative battery chemistries and technologies that are enabled by SSEs. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are outlined to foresee the development of SSEs.

Abstract:Batteries, as a widely used energy storage device, have become an important component in the development of modern society. However, traditional liquid batteries face a number of security challenges, energy density and lifespan, and the development of new battery technologies is urgently needed. As an emerging battery technology with high energy density, safety advantages and long lifespan, solid-state batteries (SSB) have obtained much attention worldwide. This paper first introduces the basic working principle of batteries. Batteries use chemical reactions to convert chemical energy into electrical energy, and realize the energy output by the flow of electrons through the movement of ions in the electrolyte. SSB differ from conventional liquid batteries in that they use solid-state materials, such as ceramics or polymers, for the electrolyte, which provide high ionic conductivity. Second, this paper will examine the current SSB development, in which domestic and foreign research institutions and enterprises have conducted extensive and continued to research SSB. They are committed to improving the battery preparation process, optimizing the battery assembly structure, and developing new solid-state electrolyte (SSE) materials. This paper then explores the fundamental technologies related to SSE, which are a critical aspect in the advancement of SSB. Recently, scientists have suggested a range of solid-state electrolyte materials possessing elevated levels of ionic conductivity, including oxides, sulfides, and polymers. Lastly, the advantages and challenges of SSB are analyzed in this paper. Greater safety, higher energy density, and longer lifespan are offered by SSB in comparison to traditional liquid batteries. Nonetheless, challenges regarding the conductivity of the solid-state electrolyte, selection of electrode material, and battery manufacturing costs still need to be addressed by SSB. In summary, SSB as an innovative energy storage solution have great development potential and broad application prospects. Future research and technological innovation will further promote the application and commercialization of SSB in energy storage.

Abstract:Owing to the serious energy crisis and environmental problems caused by fossil energy consumption, development of high-energy-density batteries is becoming increasingly significant the rapidly growing social demands. Lithium-ion batteries have received widespread attention because of their high energy densities and environmental friendliness. At present, they are widely used in portable electronic devices and electric vehicles. However, security aspects need to be addressed urgently. Substantial advances in liquid electrolyte-based lithium-ion batteries have become a performance bottleneck in the recent years. Traditional lithium-ion batteries use organic liquids as electrolytes, but the flammability and corrosion of these electrolytes considerably limit their development. Continuous growth of lithium dendrites can pierce the separator, leading to electrolyte leakage and combustion, which is a serious safety hazard. Replacement of organic electrolytes with solid-state electrolytes is one of the promising solutions for the development of next-generation energy storage devices, because they have high energy densities and are safe. Solid electrolytes can remarkably alleviate the safety hazards involved in the use of traditional liquid-based lithium-ion batteries. In addition, the composite of solid-state electrolytes and lithium metal is expected to result in a higher energy density. However, due to the lack of fluidity of the solid electrolytes, problems such as limited solid-solid contact area and increased impedance at the interface when solid-state electrolytes are in contact with electrodes must be solved. The localized and buried interface is a major drawback that restricts the electrochemical performance and practical applications of the solid-state batteries. Fabrication of a stable interface between the electrodes and solid-state electrolyte is the main challenge in the development of solid-state lithium metal batteries. All these aspects are critical to the electrochemical performance and safety of the solid-state batteries. Current research mainly focuses on addressing the problems related to the solid-solid interface in solid-state batteries and improving the electrochemical performance of such batteries. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the challenges in the fabrication of solid-state batteries, including poor chemical and electrochemical compatibilities and mechanical instability. Research progress on the improvement strategies for interface problems and the advanced characterization methods for the interface problems are discussed in detail. Meanwhile, we also propose a prospect for the future development of solid-state batteries to guide the rational designing of next-generation high-energy solid-state batteries. There are many critical problems in solid-state batteries that must be fully understood. With further research, all-solid-state batteries are expected to replace the traditional liquid-based lithium-ion batteries and become an important system for a safe and reliable energy storage.

Abstract:In the quest for a sustainable society, energy storage technology is destined to play a central role in the future energy landscape. Breakthroughs in materials and methods involving sustainable resources are crucial to protect humankind from the most serious consequences of climate change. Rechargeable batteries of all forms will be required to follow the path. Elements that are eligible to harmonically contribute to the development of a sustainable ecosystem and fulfil the demands of high energy density batteries include Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, and Al. Numerous research efforts are underway to explore new battery chemistries based on these elements and, depending on the field of application, different elements inherit different advantages and challenges. Full sustainability implies that the environmental friendliness of these systems must be characterized by a "cradle-to-grave" approach. In this context, the pursuit of global environmental and economical sustainability from mass production, raw materials, and technical challenges is discussed herein for the most recent battery concepts based on monovalent and multivalent metal anodes. A perspective on strategies and opportunities particularly around the development of all-solid-state system configurations is provided, and the most important obstacles to overcome in search of a more sustainable future for electrochemical energy storage are addressed.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a noteworthy shift from conventional lithium-ion batteries using liquid electrolytes to solid-state batteries. Solid-state technology's improved safety profile drives this shift due to the capability of solid-state electrolytes to reduce the risk of thermal runaway, leakage, and flammability. Furthermore, solid-state batteries present intrinsic resistance to dendrite formation, improved long-term stability, and reduced safety concerns. Recent advancements in using lithium and sodium solid-state technologies have been the foundation of a key innovation in this field. Lithium solid-state batteries exhibit the potential for higher energy density, faster charging, and longer cycle life. However, the high cost and the increased demand for lithium batteries raise concerns over environmental impacts and the availability of materials. Sodium solid-state batteries have the potential to be more sustainable and cost-effective as sodium is more naturally abundant. However, sodium batteries face challenges with lower energy densities and slower rate capabilities compared to the lithium system. Moreover, there is hesitation towards this technology as, in general, solid-state batteries face disadvantages in unstable cyclability, elevated operating temperature, mechanical weakness, and high interfacial electrode-electrolyte impedance. The scientific foundations of solid-state batteries and their improved effectiveness are solutions for the next generation of electric vehicles and grid-scale energy storage. Furthermore, an overview of ongoing research conducted at Dartmouth will be highlighted, including the utilization of solid composite electrolytes and the integration of high-performance sodium metal electrodes.

Abstract:Anode‐free solid‐state lithium batteries are promising for achieving ultra‐high specific energy and high safety. The key scientific issues affecting the performance of anode‐free solid‐state lithium batteries are dissected and the optimization strategies are summarized, indicating the direction of development in this frontier hotspot. Anode‐free solid‐state lithium batteries are promising for next‐generation energy storage systems, especially the mobile sectors, due to their enhanced energy density, improved safety, and extended calendar life. However, the inefficiency of lithium plating and stripping leads to rapid capacity degradation due to the absence of excess lithium inventory. Therefore, dissecting the difficulties and challenges faced by anode‐free solid‐state lithium batteries can pave the way to improving the cycle life of many lithium batteries. In this review, the key issues affecting capacity degradation are elaborated step‐by‐step based on the current understanding of anode‐free solid‐state lithium batteries. Furthermore, various strategies for optimizing performance are targeted. Finally, future opportunities and possible directions for anode‐free solid‐state lithium batteries are evaluated, aiming to stimulate the exploration of this emerging field.

Abstract:Solid-state metal-air batteries have emerged as a research hotspot due to their high energy density and high safety. Moreover, side reactions caused by infiltrated gases (O-2, H2O, or CO2) and safety issues caused by liquid electrolyte leakage will be eliminated radically. However, the solid-state metal-air battery is still in its infancy, and many thorny problems still need to be solved, such as the large resistance of the metal/electrolyte interface and catalyst design. This review will summarize some important progress and key issues for solid-state metal-air batteries, especially the lithium-, sodium-, and zinc-based metal-air batteries, clarify some core issues, and forecast the future direction of the solid-state metal-air batteries.

Abstract:As battery technologies are in continuous development, and especially due to the rapid growth in vehicle electrification, which requires large (e.g., 100 s of kg) battery packs, there has been a growing demand for more efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly materials. Solid-state post-lithium-ion batteries are considered a possible next-generation energy storage technology. One immediate advantage of these power sources over commercial lithium-ion batteries is the potential of solving the resource issues facing LIBs, especially as cost-effective alternatives. The second advantage is the removal of flammable liquid electrolytes. The solid electrolytes are more resistant to changes in temperature and physical damage, produce up to 80% less heat, and are able to handle more charge/discharge cycles before degradation makes them unusable. All these features point towards a longer battery life. Other immediate gains include the removal of the membrane and casing required for a liquid electrolyte. This may reduce the weight and volume of each cell, leading to an increase in the energy density of the battery. In this review, we describe recent achievements in the development of sodium, potassium, and magnesium solid-state batteries. It can be revealed that while the research community has progressed greatly towards solid-state alkali and alkaline-earth batteries, much more improvement in the room temperature ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes is required. For the practical applications of these systems, the stability and interfacial reactions of solid electrolytes should be explored in great depth.

Abstract:Owing to the promise of high safety and energy density, all‐solid‐state batteries are attracting incremental interest as one of the most promising next‐generation energy storage systems. However, their widespread applications are inhibited by many technical challenges, including low‐conductivity electrolytes, dendrite growth, and poor cycle/rate properties. Particularly, the interfacial dynamics between the solid electrolyte and the electrode is considered as a crucial factor in determining solid‐state battery performance. In recent years, intensive research efforts have been devoted to understanding the interfacial behavior and strategies to overcome these challenges for all‐solid‐state batteries. Here, the interfacial principle and engineering in a variety of solid‐state batteries, including solid‐state lithium/sodium batteries and emerging batteries (lithium–sulfur, lithium–air, etc.), are discussed. Specific attention is paid to interface physics (contact and wettability) and interface chemistry (passivation layer, ionic transport, dendrite growth), as well as the strategies to address the above concerns. The purpose here is to outline the current interface issues and challenges, allowing for target‐oriented research for solid‐state electrochemical energy storage. Current trends and future perspectives in interfacial engineering are also presented.

Abstract:Solid-state batteries have been considered as promising next-generation energy storage devices for potentially higher energy density and better safety compared with commercial lithium-ion batteries that are based on organic liquid electrolytes. However, in terms of indispensable solid-state electrolytes, there are remaining issues to be solved before entering the market. Most solid-state electrolytes are air-sensitive, which causes a complex and expensive cell assembly and impressible interface. Therefore, the solid-state electrolytes are expected to be atmosphere-stable, which will undoubtedly bring significant benefits to solid-state battery manufacturing. This review covers air-stability-related issues of different types of inorganic solid-state electrolytes and the corresponding strategies. First, we provide an overview of solid-state electrolytes and solid-state batteries, including their history and advantages/disadvantages. Then, different types of solid-state electrolytes are selected as examples to illustrate the unfavorable interactions in air and the corresponding adverse effects. Next, according to recent advances, we summarize the effective strategies of constructing different types of air-stable inorganic solid-state electrolytes. Finally, perspectives on designing accessible air-stable solid-state electrolytes are provided, aiming to achieve the assembly of high-performance solid-state batteries in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Solid‐state batteries (SSB) are considered a promising next step for lithium‐ion batteries. This perspective discusses the most promising materials, components, and cell concepts of SSBs, as well as production aspects. Finally, it debates application requirements and scenarios on their way to the market. Solid‐state batteries are considered as a reasonable further development of lithium‐ion batteries with liquid electrolytes. While expectations are high, there are still open questions concerning the choice of materials, and the resulting concepts for components and full cells. On the basis of an analysis of all materials and concept options, a roadmap for solid‐state batteries is presented, relying on both literature survey and experts' opinions. Diverse cell concepts with different solid electrolytes may be developed up to the commercial level, yet there are still major uncertainties concerning production routes, safety as well as cost. As one of the key developments, it appears that hybrid material and cell concepts may be particularly successful on the way to commercialization.

Abstract:Batteries are essential in modern society as they can power a wide range of devices, from small household appliances to large-scale energy storage systems. Safety concerns with traditional lithium-ion batteries prompted the emergence of new battery technologies, among them solid-state batteries (SSBs), offering enhanced safety, energy density, and lifespan. This paper reviews current state-of-the-art SSB electrolyte and electrode materials, as well as global SSB market trends and key industry players. Solid-state electrolytes used in SSBs include inorganic solid electrolytes, organic solid polymer electrolytes, and solid composite electrolytes. Inorganic options like lithium aluminum titanium phosphate excel in ionic conductivity and thermal stability but exhibit mechanical fragility. Organic alternatives such as polyethylene oxide and polyvinylidene fluoride offer flexibility but possess lower ionic conductivity. Solid composite electrolytes combine the advantages of inorganic and organic materials, enhancing mechanical strength and ionic conductivity. While significant advances have been made for composite electrolytes, challenges remain for synthesis intricacies and material stability. Nuanced selection of these electrolytes is crucial for advancing resilient and high-performance SSBs. Furthermore, while global SSB production capacity is currently below 2 GWh, it is projected to grow with a >118% compound annual growth rate by 2035, when the potential SSB market size will likely exceed 42 billion euros.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries are regarded to be the ultimate choice for future energy storage systems due to their high theoretical energy density and safety. However, the practical applications of solid-state batteries are hindered by severe interfacial issues, such as high interfacial resistance, inferior electro-/chemical compatibility, as well as poor stability. Moreover, lithium dendrite growth and mechanical degradation caused by interfacial stress during repeated cycling induce the failure of a working solid-state battery. Therefore, understanding the failure mechanism of a solid-state lithium battery is imperative and significant to construct a better interface for a safe solid-state lithium battery. In this review, the current fundamental understanding of the impact of the lithium/solid-state electrolyte interface on the solid-state ionics and interfacial chemistry are introduced first. The failure mechanisms underlying electrical, chemical, electrochemical, and mechanical aspects of solid-state lithium batteries are summarized. The emerging perspectives regarding future research directions are also included. This sheds fresh light on the rational construction of high-efficiency solid-state lithium batteries.

Abstract:Highlights The pursuit of high specific energy and high safety has promoted the transformation of lithium metal batteries from liquid to solid-state systems. In addition to high reactivity and mobile interface, all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) still faces severe inhomogeneity in mechanical and electrochemical properties. The inherent trade-off in ASSLMBs lies between ionic conductivity and electrochemical window, mechanical strength and interface contact adequacy.
