Abstract:Xingjiang area is strategic potential area of Chinese oil-gas resource. After 70 years' exploration, a series of large-scale oil-gas fields have been discovered in three basins: Junggar, Tarim and Tu-Ha of Xingjiang area, and currently we faced the issue to transfer our oil-gas exploration to new fields, including foreland thrust belt, lithological formation, deep and carbonate formations as well as new zones and their surrounding basin. The authors made analyses from following aspects: available oil-gas discovery, resource potential and petroleum-geologic conditions, and considered that these fields are major target fields of oil-gas discovery from now on.
Theoretical Progress and Key Technologies of Onshore Ultra-Deep Oil/Gas Exploration

Abstract:<p>Oil/gas exploration around the world has extended into deep and ultra-deep strata because it is increasingly difficult to find new large-scale oil/gas reservoirs in shallow to middle buried strata. In recent years, China has made remarkable achievements in oil/gas exploration in ultra-deep areas including carbonate and clastic reservoirs. Some (ultra) large-scale oil and gas fields have been discovered. The oil/gas accumulation mechanisms and key technologies of oil/gas reservoir exploration and development are summarized in this study in order to share China's experiences. Ultra-deep oil/gas originates from numerous sources of hydrocarbons and multiphase charging. Liquid hydrocarbons can form in ultra-deep layers due to low geothermal gradients or overpressures, and the natural gas composition in ultra-deep areas is complicated by the reactions between deep hydrocarbons, water, and rock or by the addition of mantle or crust-sourced gases. These oils/gases are mainly stored in the original high-energy reef shoal complexes or in sand body sediments. They usually have high original porosity. Secondary pores are often developed by dissolution, dolomitization, and fracturing in the late stage. The early pores have been preserved by retentive diagenesis such as the early charging of hydrocarbons. Oil/gas accumulation in ultra-deep areas generally has the characteristics of near-source accumulation and sustained preservation. The effective exploration and development of ultra-deep oil/gas reservoirs depend on the support of key technologies. Use of the latest technologies such as seismic signal acquisition and processing, low porosity and permeability zone prediction, and gas-water identification has enabled the discovery of ultra-deep oil/gas resources. In addition, advanced technologies for drilling, completion, and oil/gas testing have ensured the effective development of these fields.</p>

Abstract:Global cooling began since 50 Ma, but a warm climate was maintained in the archipelagic tectonic system in Southeast Asia where a wealth of Cenozoic oil and gas resources was formed and preserved. From the perspective of Earth system, this study analyzes Cenozoic tectonic activities, climatic and environmental evolution, and petroleum enrichment in Southeast Asia, and provides the following insights: (1) Subduction of oceanic plates and the extension of overlying continental lithosphere resulted in widespread volcanic eruptions as well as the formation of rift basins and shallow marine shelves, leading to complex interactions between deep tectonic processes and Earth's surface including mountains, basins, and seas. (2) Microcontinental accretion and prolonged stay in equatorial low-latitude regions have changed trade winds into monsoons, altered ocean current pathways and flow rates, and profoundly affected rainfall and climate. (3) The archipelagic tectonic system, coupled with a hot and rainy climate, fostered tropical rainforests, mangroves, and phytoplankton, providing abundant organic matter and promoting the development of petroleum resources. (4) Combinations of rift basin development and marine transgression and regression led to an effective superposition of source-reservoir-seal combinations from multiplepetroleum systems. Rapid deep burial of organic matter and high geothermal gradients facilitated the generation and large-scale accumulation of oil and gas. (5) Multi-spherical (such as atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere) interactions on the Earth, which resulted from the convergence of multiple tectonic plates, are believed as the primary driver for exceptional enrichments of Cenozoic oil and gas resources in Southeast Asia. These understandings are significant for developing theories of oil and gas enrichment under the guidance of Earth System Science. In order to continue making significant oil and gas exploration discoveries in the deep-layers, deep-waters, and unconventional oil and gas fields of Southeast Asia, attention should be paid to the oil and gas resource effects of the collision between Australia and Sunda blocks and the high-temperature and high-rainfall climate environment, and efforts should be made to develop economic development and CO 2 sequestration technologies for offshore CO 2 -rich gas fields.

Abstract:Opening a new field of deep-water oil-gas exploitation and realizing high-efficiency and economizing development of boundary oil-gas is an important path to improving sustainable capability of oil-gas and guarantee oil-gas safety.China has a weak foundation of deep-water oil-gas exploitation techniques,and does not have conditions to exploit deep water oil-gas during the 11~(th) Five-Year Plan.According to the characteristics of China's sea area,a part of the focal technical problems can be selected and tackled by relative important measures during the 11~(th) Five-Year Plan so that technical transformation of ocean oil-gas exploitation from coastal waters to the deep water can be realized and those techniques will providehigh technical support to the overall exploitation of sea area resources.Taking ocean oil-gas exploitation techniques as objects,the article analyzes both inner and outer environmental conditions from the aspects of oil-gas resources exploitation status,technical development and trend and national and economic demands,and pases challenges in the field of oil-gas resources technologies and points out the gap between international standards.Besides,the article analyzes technologies and foreign monopoly technologies that become the bottleneck for technical and relative oil industry development,and finally put,forward strategic goals and modes of ocean resources exploitation technical development.
RESEARCH EXPERIENCES AND APPLICATION OF SEISMIC EXPLORATION TECHNOLOGY TO THE MESOZOIC-PALEOZOIC MARINE STRATA IN THE SOUTH YELLOW SEA BASIN

Abstract:The South Yellow Sea Basin is the only large sedimentary basin without oil and gas fields discovered so far in the offshore area of China. There occur two sets of strata, the continental Mesozoic-Cenozoic and the marine Mesozoic-Paleozoic, for hydrocarbon exploration. The marine Mesozoic-Paleozoic strata are thick and widely distributed. However, the quality of seismic data is always a problem which restricts effective oil and gas exploration. The marine Meso-Paleozoic basin is characterized by deep burial, complex basin-forming background, and strong tectonic deformation in the later stage. The research of seismic exploration technology for the Meso-Paleozoic has experienced three stages of progress: seismic geological research, tackling key technical problems, and technical breakthrough and application. In the first stage, seismic geological conditions and rock physical properties were analyzed. Then, with the help of continuous updating of geophysical prospecting vessels, in addition to seismic instruments and equipment, the seismic acquisition parameters are continuously improved through large number of theoretical simulations, targeted physical simulations and continuous offshore trials. As the results, the seismic exploration technology called “HRS” took place, which broke the “bottleneck” of the seismic data interpretation for the marine Mesozoic-Paleozoic strata in the South Yellow Sea Basin. This technology is characterized by high coverage, low-frequency and strong source energy. By using this technology, three sets of seismic reflection markers which can be continuously traced and seven reflection surfaces were identified on the Laoshan Uplift where the original reflection of the marine Mesozoic-Paleozoic strata are blank. Upon the basis, stratigraphic sequences were established, residual basin tectonic units revealed, and the oil and gas prospect areas predicted. The Gaoshi stability zone of the Laoshan Uplift was selected as a favorable exploration target. Key structures were delineated, and drilling targets locked. The works mentioned above made clear the direction and conditions for further exploration and the breakthrough of oil and gas exploration in the new strata of the South Yellow Sea Basin. The “HRS” seismic exploration technology has great significance for expanding the spatial areas of hydrocarbon exploration in offshore China, and push forward the exploration and development of oil and gas resources in deep offshore areas. The technology may be used for oil and gas exploration in the sea areas with similar seismic and geological conditions in the other part of the world.

Abstract:Ocean energy generation is a project of great potential on renewable energy at inshore areas. It could not only alleviate the press of power energy at these relative-developed areas, but also give the promotion of sustainable development for environment. Great attention has been given by many countries. This paper analyzes the necessity of the development of ocean energy generation with the world's current energy condition, briefly describes the principles and status of all kinds of ocean power generation, and introduces the development process and present situation of many countries, including China, in this aspect. The cause and solution of the problems existing in China's development of ocean energy is also given.
Multi-spheric interactions driven differential formation and accumulation of hydrocarbon resources in the North Sea Basin

Abstract:The North Sea Basin is the most important oil and gas producing area in Europe and the birthplace of many classic petroleum geological theories. From the perspective of multi-spheric interactions in the Earth, this study investigated the rift-foreland-rift evolution process of the North Sea Basin, which was controlled by the deep dynamic driving forces of the continental collision orogeny, mantle plume uplift, and intraplate deformation. The North Sea Basin was found to have drifted northward since the Carboniferous and passed through the low-latitude Hadley and the mid-latitude Ferrel cells. Two sets of main hydrocarbon source rocks have formed, the coals and coal measures of the Upper Carboniferous Westphalian and the marine shale of the Upper Jurassic Kimmeridge Clay Formation. We propose that the deep processes, tectonic activity, and transgression-climate evolution jointly controlled the types and horizons of the source rocks, reservoirs, and seals in different regions of the North Sea Basin. In the southern North Sea Basin, a Carboniferous-Lower Triassic gas-rich petroleum system was formed, which is characterized by transitional coal measure source rocks, desert aeolian sandstone reservoirs, and evaporite cap rocks. In the northern North Sea Basin, an Upper Triassic-Paleogene oil-rich petroleum system was formed, which is characterized by marine graben-type source rocks, deltaic sandstone and marine limestone reservoirs, and marine tight marl and shale cap rocks. The late tectonic burial and uplift in the North Sea Basin further controlled the processes of oil and gas generation and accumulation, ultimately leading to a differential distribution pattern which is oil rich in the northern part and gas rich in the southern part of the basin. In the future, there is an urgent need to re-examine the mechanisms for the petroleum generation and accumulation in large mature exploration areas (e.g., super basins such as the North Sea) and low exploration areas (e.g., the Okhotsk Sea and Arctic regions) from the perspective of multi-spheric interactions in the Earth in order to provide new theoretical support for increasing the identification of oil and gas reserves globally. The development of artificial intelligence in the petroleum industry should focus on the massive amount of exploration and geological data collected in the North Sea Basin. Through digital geological innovation, carbon neutral comprehensive utilization of oil, gas, and associated resources (e.g., helium and hydrogen) can be achieved, providing a new paradigm for global oil and gas exploration and development.

Abstract:Large and extra-large oil/gas fields are mainly distributed in Tethys areas, passive margins, foreland thrust belts, and craton basins in the world. Unconventional oil/gas fields are mainly distributed in foreland slopes, basin (depression) centers, craton synclines, and tundra. Since the 21st century, the major exploration discoveries across the globe have been mainly concentrated in the deep water area of passive margins, carbonate rock, lithologic-stratigraphic zone, foreland thrust belt, mature exploration area, new basin and unconventional oil/gas reservoir (field). These major discoveries involve conventional and unconventional oil/gas resources. The conventional oil geology stresses the oil/gas migration and reservoir-forming rules in individual traps; the unconventional oil geology focuses on unconventional resources, reservoir, reservoir-formation and technologies. The geological features, classification program, research content, evaluation method and exploration phase of unconventional oil/gas reservoirs (fields) are different from those of conventional ones. Research should be strengthened on unconventional oil geology to develop unconventional oil geological theories.

Abstract:Explorers are the organizers, managers and practitioners of oil and gas exploration activities. They are also professionals who master petroleum geology and related disciplines, are familiar with exploration techniques, apply exploration methods flexibly, and are proficient in exploration management. So, they are both business and management experts. Successful explorers must first have a firm confidence in finding oil and gas, have a scientific spirit that does not blindly follow or agree, and always maintain a sensitivity of thinking. There are no shortcuts to exploration. First, we should solve the basic problems of exploration; second, we should adhere to scientific exploration procedures; third, we should have the awareness of development, efficiency, and dynamic optimization. We should highlight key points, and continue to optimize exploration deployment so as to ensure the completion of the exploration mission. To achieve high-quality exploration, the way of thinking should be changed from the traditional thinking of "heroes based on output" to that of "heroes based on benefits". The top-level design should be done to achieve the integration of investment, benefits and responsibilities, and further improve and establish the exploration deployment comparison and selection mechanisms and a new two-level decision-making management so as to achieve the "five major changes". With the rapid development of geophysical exploration technology and drilling and completion technology, current global oil and gas exploration is undergoing profound changes, and it is constantly developing into more detailed, deeper, broader, more difficult and more challenging fields. The faulted basins in East China, marine carbonate rocks, clastic rocks in Central and West China and shale gas will be the main areas for increasing oil and gas reserves and production. With advances in theory and technology, coalbed methane, shale oil, and oil shale are also important areas that need to be tackled and cultivated. In the future, with the rapid development of unconventional oil and gas theories, the basic system of oil and gas geology will continue to expand and improve. With the support of a new generation of intelligent technology systems for exploration and development, a conventional-unconventional overall evaluation and multi-layer exploration system of petroliferous basins will be formed, which will bring a new round of growth in oil and gas reserves and production.

Abstract:By analyzing the structural background, petroleum geological conditions, and typical regional (paleo) oil and gas reservoirs in marine ultra-deep oil and gas regions in China, this paper reveals the evolution processes of the marine ultra-deep oil and gas reservoirs and the key controlling factors of accumulation. The marine ultra-deep oil and gas resources in China are buried at depth of greater than 6000 m, and are mainly distributed in the Precambrian and Lower Paleozoic strata in the Sichuan, Tarim and Ordos cratonic basins. The development of marine ultra-deep source rocks in China is controlled by cratonic rifts and cratonic depressions with the background of global supercontinent breakup-convergence cycles. The source rocks in Sichuan Basin have the most developed strata, followed by Tarim Basin, and the development strata and scale of Ordos Basin needs to be further confirmed. The marine ultra-deep reservoir in China is dominated by carbonate rocks, and the reservoir performance is controlled by high-energy sedimentary environment in the early stage, superimposed corrosion and fracture in the later stage. The regional caprocks are dominated by gypsum salt rocks, shale, and tight carbonate rock. The ultra-deep oil and gas fields in China have generally experienced two stages of oil-reservoir forming, cracking (or partial cracking) of paleo-oil reservoirs, and late finalization of cracked gas (or highly mature to over mature oil and gas). The oil and gas accumulation is controlled by static and dynamic geological elements jointly. Major hydrocarbon generation center, high quality and large-scale reservoir resulted from karstification of high energy facies belt, thick gypsum rock or shale caprock, and stable trapping and preservation conditions are the key factors for accumulation of ultra-deep oil and gas. We propose three favorable exploration directions, i.e. the areas around intracratonic rift and intracratonic depression, and craton margin.

Big data analysis and achievements of global Petroleum exploration

Abstract:<p>Through applying the data mining analysis techniques of cluster analysis and correlation analysis, as well as spatial analysis and data visualization analysis techniques closely combined with GIS technology, based on IHS&#8217;s global exploratory well data, global oil and gas field data,&#160; the data and its classification schemes of 468 petroliferous basins identified by the Oil and Gas Resources Evaluation Project Team of PetroChina, this paper conducted topological analysis, spatial overlay analysis and spatial statistical analysis research in the system of ArcGISn. For the first time, it completed the globally big data mining and analysis of various basin drilling exploration. Meanwhile, it applied small patches technique to analyze the heat of global oil and gas drilling exploration, obtained some new understandings of the global oil and gas exploration activity routines, which is considered to be significant in guiding the optimization of new exploration projects worldwide, and indicated the good application prospect of the big data analysis technology in the oil and gas industry.The new findings are as follows. (1) The prospects with high degree of exploration globally mainly concentrate in Tethyan tectonic domain. (2) In the history of petroleum industry, the active period was distinct with basin types. Specifically, it was in 1910-1920 for for-arc basins, 1950-1980 for foreland basins, and 1980-1990 for continental rift basins. (3) The global success ratio of exploratory wells is 28.8% on the average, and the success ratio does not differ greatly for various types of basins. Generally, the ratio is relatively higher for passive continental margin basins, but relatively lower for for-arc basins. (4) Through estimating the average well-controllable reserves to denote the exploration efficiency in a specific basin type, it is illustrated that the exploration efficiency was the highest in passive continental margin basins, followed by continental rift basins and foreland basins, and the lowest in fore-arc basins.</p>
Prospect of Ultra-Deep Petroleum Onshore China

Abstract:A series of breakthroughs have been achieved in the exploration of ultra-deep formations onshore China as geological understanding and technologies progress, such as Tarim Basin, Sichuan Basin, Bohai Bay Basin. Some new understandings are put forward suggesting that ultra-deep petroleum potential should be beyond expectation: hydrocarbons are controlled by rift valleys in the pre-Cambrian in China, conventional marine carbonate hydrocarbon source kitchens and scattered liquid hydrocarbons in source rocks are cracked to provide a large scale of gas, clastics in ultra-deep formations develop excellent source rocks, the low limit of gas generation is extended and the upper temperature limit for ultra-deep oil cracking without catalysis is beyond 230°C, the low pore radius limit is different for different types of reservoirs and hydrocarbon accumulating mechanisms. The preservation of three types of carbonate karst reservoirs and three types of clastic reservoirs as well as the physical properties of volcanics are slightly affected by burial depth, and it is predicted that favorable reservoirs are widely spread in ultra-deep formations. Carbonate karst, source rock and clastic reservoir interbeds are associated effectively in large ancient uplifts and slopes close to source rocks, faults control hydrocarbons and volcanics form accumulations nearby sources. This decides that ultra-deep carbonates, clastics and volcanics can all form large accumulations, but the abundance of reserve is relatively low. In Chinese ultra-deep formations, there are remaining petroleum resources of 162.9×10 8 t, gas of 16.3×10 12 m 3 , nine practical exploratory areas, 14 relay exploratory areas, and a great potential of exploration. In future, ultra-deep carbonates are an important relay area for oil and gas, ultra-deep clastics are secondarily important, and ultra-deep volcanics are and important area for further study.

Abstract:Deepwater regions have emerged as pivotal domains for global oil and gas exploration and development, serving as strategic alternatives to conventional resources. The Silk Road region is distinguished by its abundant oil and gas reserves and stands as a leading arena for worldwide exploration and development in the oil and gas sector. Since 2012, a series of atmospheric fields have been discovered in the deep sea of the Luwuma Basin and the Tanzania Basin, with cumulative recoverable reserves reaching 4.4 × 1012 and 8.3 × 1011 m3, including multiple oil and gas fields ranking among the top ten global discoveries at that time. Profound advancements have been achieved in the exploration of deepwater oil and gas reserves along the Silk Road. However, deepwater oil and gas exploration presents challenges, such as high development costs and risks, leading to certain areas remaining underexplored and exhibiting a relatively low level of exploration activity, thereby hinting at considerable untapped potential. Deepwater sedimentary basins along the Silk Road predominantly adhere to a distribution pattern characterized as “one horizontal and one vertical”. The “horizontal” dimension refers to the deepwater basin grouping within the Neo-Tethys tectonic domain, primarily extending from east to west. Conversely, the “vertical” dimension denotes the deepwater basin grouping along the East African continental margin, predominantly extending from north to south. Recent discoveries of deepwater oil and gas reserves validate the presence of foundational elements within Silk Road basins conducive to the formation of substantial oil and gas reservoirs and the establishment of efficient migration pathways. Despite these achievements, exploration activities in deepwater oil and gas resources along the Silk Road remain relatively limited. Future exploration endeavors in deepwater regions will predominantly focus on identifying structural and lithological traps. In the deepwater areas of the Bay of Bengal, the emphasis is on lithological traps formed by Neogene turbidite sandstone deposits. In the deepwater regions of Pakistan, the focus shifts to lithological traps emerging from Neogene bio-reefs and river-channel sandstone accumulations. Along the deepwater coastline of East Africa, the focus is on lithological traps formed by nearshore Mesozoic–Cenozoic bio-reefs and seafloor turbidite sandstone formations. Within the deepwater regions of Southeast Asia, the primary objective is to locate large structural-type oil and gas fields. Petroleum Exploration and Development

Abstract:Based on the compilation and analysis of the lithofacies and paleogeography distribution maps at present and paleoplate locations during six key geological periods of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, the lithofacies and paleogeography features and their development laws were expounded. Based on our previous research results on lithofacies and paleogeography from Precambrian to Paleozoic, we systematically studied the features and evolution laws of global lithofacies and paleogeography from the Precambrian and their effects on the formation of source rocks, reservoirs, cap rocks and the distribution of oil and gas worldwide. The results show that since Precambrian, the distribution areas of uplift erosion and terrestrial clastic deposition tended to increase gradually, and increased significantly during the period of continental growth. The scale of coastal and shallow marine facies area had three distinct cycles, namely, from Precambrian to Devonian, from Carboniferous to Triassic, and from Jurassic to Neogene. Correspondingly, the development of shallow carbonate platform also showed three cycles; the lacustrine facies onshore was relatively developed in Mesozoic and Cenozoic; the sabkha was mainly developed in the Devonian, Permian and Triassic. The Cretaceous is the most important source rock layers in the world, followed by the Jurassic and Paleogene source rocks; the clastic reservoirs have more oil and gas than the carbonate reservoirs; the basins with shale caprocks have the widest distribution, the most abundant reserves of oil and gas, and the evaporite caprocks have the strongest sealing capacity, which can seal some huge oil and gas fields.

Abstract:During the 12th“Five‐Year Plan” ,great breakthroughs in oil and gas exploration w ere made in Sinopec and technological innovative developments in seismic exploration ,ultra‐deep well drilling and completion ,horizontal well staged fracturing ,mud logging and well logging provided crucial support . Nevertheless ,some technical challenges will be encountered in oil and gas exploration in the future .For example ,it is hard to find new oil reserves for strategic replacement ,the quality of new reserves is degrad‐ed ,and burial depths increase w hile the geological complexity of exploration targets requires a higher engi‐neering technical requirement .Sinopec has committed to oil and gas exploration that will mainly target sev‐en kind of reserves including continental subtle reservoirs ,marine reservoirs ,tight clastic reservoirs ,pied‐mont reservoirs ,igneous reservoirs ,sea and unconventional oil and gas resources (shale gas) .T his paper presents a analysis of the main technical challenges in these seven types of reservoirs and identifies the ma‐jor technical research directions in geophysical exploration ,borehole stability ,mud logging and well log‐ging .
Prospective Prediction and Exploration Situation of Marine Mesozoic-Paleozoic Oil and Gas in the South Yellow Sea

Abstract:The South Yellow Sea Basin is a large sedimentary basin superimposed by the Mesozoic-Paleozoic marine sedimentary basin and the Mesozoic-Cenozoic terrestrial sedimentary basin, where no oil and gas fields have been discovered after exploration for 58 years. After the failure of oil and gas exploration in terrestrial basins, the exploration target of the South Yellow Sea Basin turned to the marine Mesozoic-Paleozoic strata. After more than ten years’ investigation and research, a lot of achievements have been obtained. The latest exploration obtained effective seismic reflection data of deep marine facies by the application of seismic exploration technology characterized by high coverage, abundant low-frequency components and strong energy source for the deep South Yellow Sea Basin. In addition, some wells drilled the Middle-Upper Paleozoic strata, with obvious oil and gas shows discovered in some horizons. The recent petroleum geological research on the South Yellow Sea Basin shows that the structure zoning of the marine residual basin has been redetermined, the basin structure has been defined, and 3 seismic reflection marker layers are traceable and correlatable in the residual thick Middle-Paleozoic strata below the continental Meso-Cenozoic strata in the South Yellow Sea Basin. Based on these, the seismic sequence of the marine sedimentary strata was established. According to the avaliable oil and gas exploration and research, the marine Mesozoic-Paleozoic oil and gas prospects of the South Yellow Sea were predicted as follows. (1) The South Yellow Sea Basin has the same sedimentary formation and evolution history during the sedimentary period of the Middle-Paleozoic marine basin with the Sichuan Basin. (2) There are 3 regional high-quality source rocks. (3) The carbonate and clastic reservoirs are developed in the Mesozoic-Paleozoic strata. (4) The three source-reservoir-cap assemblages are relatively intact. (5) The Laoshan Uplift is a prospect area for the Lower Paleozoic oil and gas, and the Wunansha Uplift is one for the marine Upper Paleozoic oil and gas. (6) The Gaoshi stable zone in the Laoshan Uplift is a favorable zone. (7) The marine Mesozoic-Paleozoic strata in the South Yellow Sea Basin has the geological conditions required to form large oil and gas fields, with remarkable oil and gas resources prospect. An urgent problem to be addressed now within the South Yellow Sea Basin is to drill parametric wells for the Lower Paleozoic strata as the target, to establish the complete stratigraphic sequence since the Paleozoic period, to obtain resource evaluation parameters, and to realize the strategic discovery and achieve breakthrough in oil and gas exploration understanding.©2019 China Geology Editorial Office.

Abstract:China ranks second and third in global oil and natural gas consumption, and fifth and sixth in global oil and natural gas production, respectively ( U.S. EIA, 2018 ). In the past 25 years, China's oil consumption has increased 3.5 times, and natural gas consumption is rising rapidly as well. China is increasing its investment in the petroleum industry, with a goal of significantly expanding domestic oil and gas production. Complex geology, rough surface conditions, and the need to explore deep targets, unconventional resources, and offshore reservoirs pose great challenges to geophysical exploration. Geophysical technologies in China thus have advanced significantly in data acquisition, processing, and interpretation. To demonstrate the development and applications of geophysical technologies in the exploration, development, and production of oil and gas resources, we invited academic and industry experts to present recent studies on exploration geophysics in China.

Abstract:As a relatively stable craton block in the earth system, the petroliferous basin is influenced by the evolution of the earth system from the early development environment of source rocks, hydrocarbon formation, and reservoir dissolution to hydrocarbon accumulation or destruction. As a link between the internal and external factors of the basin, deep fluids run through the whole process of hydrocarbon formation and accumulation through organic-inorganic interaction. The nutrients carried by deep fluids promote the bloom of hydrocarbon-generating organisms and extra addition of carbon and hydrogen source, which are beneficial to the development of high-quality source rock and enhancement of the hydrocarbon generation potential. The energy carried by the deep fluid promotes the early maturation of the source rock and facilitates the hydrocarbon generation by activation and hydrogenation in high-mature hydrocarbon sources. The dissolution alteration of carbonate rocks and clastic reservoirs by CO2-rich deep fluids improves the deep reservoir space, thus extending the oil and gas reservoir space into greater depth. The extraction of deeply retained crude oil by deep supercritical CO2 and the displacement of CH4 in shale have both improved the hydrocarbon fluidity in deep and tight reservoirs. Simultaneously, the energy and material carried by deep fluids (C, H, and catalytic substances) not only induce inorganic CH4 formation by Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis and “hydrothermal petroleum” generation from organic matter by thermal activity but also cause the hydrothermal alteration of crude oil from organic sources. Therefore, from the perspective of the interaction of the earth’s sphere, deep fluids not only input a significant amount of exogenous C and H into sedimentary basins but also improve the reservoir space for oil and gas, as well as their enrichment and accumulation efficiencies.

Abstract:The East China Sea Shelf Basin is a large-scale Cenozoic complex petroliferous basin in China's sea area.The Mesozoic basins there are regarded as the strategic successor for oil and gas exploration in China.In the period prior to 2005,the Cenozoic was the major exploration target in the country.After 2005,however,with the improvement of seismic acquisition and processing technology and the change of exploration ideas,a series of progress has been achieved in exploration in the Mesozoic,such as,1) the rapid development of deep 2D seismic acquisition and processing technology;2) the distribution pattern of the Mesozoic in East China,i.e."the terrestrial Mesozoic in the west and the marine in the east " was established through stratigraphic correlation between the sea and the land;3)the NE zonation of the Mesozoic basins is confirmed and the basins have passed through three evolutionary stages.4) Two sets of source rocks are discovered in the Mesozoic.On the above basic facts,the problems and challenges of oil and gas exploration in Mesozoic basins in the East China Sea Shelf Basin are analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:The study of exploration methods for oil/gas-bearing reservoirs is important aspects of geophysical study. The paper tried to summarize the different methods for reservoir exploration based on developed situation of different conventional geophysical exploration methods at home and abroad, and conducted evaluation in such aspects as data precision, exploration cost and adaptive scope etc; on that basis, the paper discussed the key issues such as prospect of development in oil/gas exploration methods and research domain that can make breakthrough in next several years. The studied results showed that, in anisotropic medium, we should make efforts to develop multi-wave and multi-component exploration techniques, PS-converted wave exploration technique, strengthen the study of forward and inversion models in anisotropic medium and develop associated exploration technique and further improve exploration precision as well as reduce exploration costs.
