Abstract:We determine the prime strongly positive amphicheiral knots up to 16 crossings and show that a large fraction of them admit knot diagrams with a double symmetry (rotational symmetry for strongly positive amphicheirality and an additional mirror symmetry for the ribbon property). The remaining knots are presented as `almost doubly symmetric' diagrams, defined as diagrams with double symmetry where exactly one symmetric pair of crossings is switched. We also find that the rosette knot 14a19470, which has period 7, is the first prime strongly positive amphicheiral knot in the knot tables which is not slice.

Abstract:This is the second part of the article on doubly symmetric diagrams and strongly positive amphicheiral knots. We develop an enumeration strategy for prime knots given by doubly symmetric diagrams and determine all cases up to 18 crossings in the doubly symmetric diagram. A digression covers the origin of Gauss words for long curves and explains how Gauss marked non-realizable words.

Equivariant crossing numbers for two-bridge knots

Abstract:Symmetries of knots have been studied extensively, and strongly invertible knots are one of them. Lamm defined the equivariant crossing number $c_t(K)$, the minimum crossing number among all symmetric diagrams for a strongly invertible knot $K$. In this paper, we define $c_2(K)$ for two-bridge knots by restricting diagrams to two types. This gives an upper bound for $c_t(K)$. We give an algorithm to determine $c_2(K)$ for any two-bridge knot. The results of calculation by a computer up to 14 crossings are shown. As a corollary, we show 20 examples of knots up to 10 crossings in Rolfsen's knot table whose symmetry can be improved without increasing the number of crossings.

Abstract:A symmetric union of two knots is a classical construction in knot theory which generalizes connected sum, introduced by Kinoshita and Terasaka in the 1950s. We study this construction for the purpose of finding an infinite family of hyperbolic non-fibered three-bridge knots of constant determinant which satisfy the well-known cosmetic crossing conjecture. This conjecture asserts that the only crossing changes which preserve the isotopy type of a knot are nugatory.

On the complexity of meander-like diagrams of knots

Abstract:It is known that each knot has a semimeander diagram (i. e. a diagram composed of two smooth simple arcs), however the number of crossings in such a diagram can only be roughly estimated. In the present paper we provide a new estimate of the complexity of the semimeander diagrams. We prove that for each knot $K$ with more than 10 crossings, there exists a semimeander diagram with no more than $0.31 \cdot 1.558^{\operatorname{cr}(K)}$ crossings, where $\operatorname{cr}(K)$ is the crossing number of $K$. As a corollary, we provide new estimates of the complexity of other meander-like types of knot diagrams, such as meander diagrams and potholders. We also describe an efficient algorithm for constructing a semimeander diagram from a given one.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>We study methods for computing the bridge number of a knot from a knot diagram. We prove equivalence between a geometric and a combinatorial definition of the bridge number of a knot diagram. For each notion of diagrammatic bridge number considered, we find crossing number minimizing knot diagrams which fail to minimize bridge number. Furthermore, we construct a family of minimal crossing diagrams for which the difference between diagrammatic bridge number and the actual bridge number of the knot grows to infinity.</p>

Abstract:A crown diagram of a smooth, closed oriented 4-manifold can be thought of as the projection of a link in the product of a closed surface and the circle, with chords in the circle direction connecting the strands of each crossing. This paper uses a straightforward assignment of integers to these chords to show that the smooth structures on the topological 4-manifold underlying a pair of Fintushel-Stern knot surgery 4-manifolds which are known to have the same Seiberg-Witten invariant are not isotopic. A natural question is to determine if the argument may be strengthened to show these manifolds are not diffeomorphic.

Abstract:Deformations of knots and links in ambient space can be studied combinatorially on their diagrams via local modifications called Reidemeister moves. While it is well-known that, in order to move between equivalent diagrams with Reidemeister moves, one sometimes needs to insert excess crossings, there are significant gaps between the best known lower and upper bounds on the required number of these added crossings. In this article, we study the problem of turning a diagram of a split link into a split diagram, and we show that there exist split links with diagrams requiring an arbitrarily large number of such additional crossings. More precisely, we provide a family of diagrams of split links, so that any sequence of Reidemeister moves transforming a diagram with $c$ crossings into a split diagram requires going through a diagram with $\Omega(\sqrt{c})$ extra crossings. Our proof relies on the framework of bubble tangles, as introduced by Lunel and de Mesmay, and a technique of Chambers and Liokumovitch to turn homotopies into isotopies in the context of Riemannian geometry.

Abstract:Crossings of knot diagrams can be divided into classes (tribes) compatible with Reidemeister moves. Tribes can be considered as localization of the notion of weak chord index introduced by M. Xu. In the article we describe tribes of crossings for tangles in a fixed surface and show that crossings are differentiated by their component, order and homotopy types. As a consequence, we conclude that there are no nontrivial indices on diagrams of classical knots.

Taut foliations from knot diagrams

Abstract:We prove that if a knot $K$ has a particular type of diagram then all non-trivial surgeries on $K$ contain a coorientable taut foliation. Knots admitting such diagrams include many two-bridge knots, many pretzel knots, many Montesinos knots and more generally all arborescent knots defined by weighted planar trees with more than one vertex such that $1)$ all weights have absolute value greater than one, and $2)$ there exists a weight with absolute value greater than two. The ideas involved in the proof can also be adapted to study surgeries on links and as an application we show that for all surgeries $M$ on the Borromean link it holds that $M$ is not an $L$-space if and only if $M$ contains a coorientable taut foliation.

A classification of symmetries of knots

Abstract:We classify all finite group actions on knots in the 3-sphere. By geometrization, all such actions are conjugate to actions by isometries, and so we may use orthogonal representation theory to describe three cyclic and seven dihedral families of symmetries. By constructing examples, we prove that all of the cyclic and four of the dihedral families arise as symmetries of prime knots. The remaining three dihedral families apply only to composite knots. We also explain how to distinguish different types of symmetries of knots using diagrammatic or topological data. Our classification immediately implies a previous result of Sakuma: a hyperbolic knot cannot be both freely periodic and amphichiral. In passing, we establish two technical results: one concerning finite cyclic or dihedral subgroups of isometries of the 3-sphere and another concerning linking numbers of symmetric knots.

Hard Unknots and Collapsing Tangles

Abstract:This paper gives infinitely many examples of unknot diagrams that are hard, in the sense that the diagrams need to be made more complicated by Reidemeister moves before they can be simplified. In order to construct these diagrams, we prove theorems characterizing when the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles is an unknot. The key theorem shows that the numerator of the sum of two rational tangles [P/Q] and [R/S] is unknotted if and only if PS + QR has absolute value equal to 1. The paper uses these results in studying processive DNA recombination, finding minimal size unknot diagrams, generalizing to collapses to knots as well as to unknots, and in finding unknots with arbirarily high complexity. The paper is self-contained, with a review of the theory of rational tangles and a last section on relationships of the theme of the paper with other aspects of topology and number theory. The present version of the paper contains a correction to Figure 22 of the previous (and published) version, a small expansion to the section on Farey fractions, and an updated reference to the paper "Unknotting unknots" by Henrich and Kauffman.

Abstract:The authors conjectured previously that a knot is nonfibered if and only if its infinite cyclic cover has uncountably many finite covers. We prove the conjecture for a class of knots that includes all knots of genus 1, using techniques from symbolic dynamics.

Abstract:In the study of ribbon knots, Lamm introduced symmetric unions inspired by earlier work of Kinoshita and Terasaka. We show an identity between the twisted Alexander polynomials of a symmetric union and its partial knot. As a corollary, we obtain an inequality concerning their genera. It is known that there exists an epimorphism between their knot groups, and thus our inequality provides a positive answer to an old problem of Jonathan Simon in this case. Our formula also offers a useful condition to constrain possible symmetric union presentations of a given ribbon knot. It is an open question whether every ribbon knot is a symmetric union.

Abstract:A knot is a closed loop in space without self-intersection. Two knots are equivalent if there is a self homeomorphism of space bringing one onto the other. An arc presentation is an embedding of a knot in the union of finitely many half planes with a common boundary line such that each half plane contains a simple arc of the knot. The minimal number of such half planes among all arc presentations of a given knot is called the arc index of the knot. A knot is usually presented as a planar diagram with finitely many crossings of two strands where one of the strands goes over the other. A grid diagram is a planar diagram which is a non-simple rectilinear polygon such that vertical edges always cross over horizontal edges at all crossings. It is easily seen that an arc presentation gives rise to a grid diagram and vice versa. It is known that the arc index of an alternating knot is two plus its minimal crossing number. There are 4878 prime alternating knots with minimal crossing number 13. We obtained minimal arc presentations of them in the form of grid diagrams having 15 vertical segments. This is a continuation of the works on prime alternating knots of 11 crossings and 12 crossings.

A new invariant of equivariant concordance and results on 2-bridge knots

Abstract:We study the equivariant concordance classes of two-bridge knots, providing an easy formula to compute their butterfly polynomial, and we give two different proofs that no two-bridge knot is equivariantly slice. Finally, we introduce a new invariant of equivariant concordance for strongly invertible knots. Using this invariant as an obstruction we strengthen the result on two-bridge knots, proving that their equivariant concordance order is always infinite.

Abstract:We study cosmetic crossings in knots of genus one and obtain obstructions to such crossings in terms of knot invariants determined by Seifert matrices. In particular, we prove that for genus one knots the Alexander polynomial and the homology of the double cover branching over the knot provide obstructions to cosmetic crossings. As an application we prove the nugatory crossing conjecture for twisted Whitehead doubles of non-cable knots. We also verify the conjecture for several families of pretzel knots and all genus one knots with up to 12 crossings.

Abstract:For classical knots, there is a concept of (semi)meander diagrams; in this short note we generalize this concept to virtual knots and prove that the classes of meander and semimeander diagrams are universal (this was known for classical knots). Abstract:We present a class of knots associated with labelled generic immersions of intervals into the plane and compute their Gordian numbers and 4-dimensional invariants. At least 10% of the knots in Rolfsen's table belong to this class of knots. We call them track knots. They are contained in the class of quasipositive knots. In this connection, we classify quasipositive knots and strongly quasipositive knots up to 10 crossings.
