Abstract:Standard chemical evolution models based on long-term infall are affected by a number of problems, evidenced by the analysis of the most recent data. Among these: (1) models rely on the local metallicity distribution, assuming its shape is valid for the entire Galaxy, which it is not; (2) they assume that the solar vicinity abundance patterns resulted from a unique chemical evolution, which it does not; (3) they assume the disk is a single structure with chemical properties that are a smooth function of the distance to the galactic center, which it is not. Moreover, new results point to a thick disk being as massive as the thin disk, leading to a change of paradigm in the way we see the formation of these structures. I discuss these various issues, and, commenting on Snaith et al. (2014), how a closed box model offers an interesting approximation to the galactic chemical evolution, by providing the conditions in which large amounts of gas are available in the disk at high redshift. The novel way presented in Snaith et al. (2014) to derive SFH from stellar abundances is also discussed, providing a measurement of the SFH of old populations that is valid for the entire Galaxy. The derived SFH shows that the formation of the thick disk has been the dominant epoch of star formation in our Galaxy.

Abstract:Status quo and perspectives of standard chemical evolution models of Local Group galaxies are summarized, discussing what we have learnt from them, what we know we have not learnt yet, and what I think we will learn in the near future. It is described how Galactic chemical evolution models have helped showing that: i) stringent constraints on primordial nucleosynthesis can be derived from the observed Galactic abundances of the light elements, ii) the Milky Way has been accreting external gas from early epochs to the present time, iii) the vast majority of Galactic halo stars have formed quite rapidly at early epochs. Chemical evolution models for the closest dwarf galaxies, although still uncertain so far, are expected to become extremely reliable in the nearest future, thanks to the quality of new generation photometric and spectroscopic data which are currently being acquired.

Abstract:For several decades now, open clusters have been used to study the structure and chemical evolution of the disk of our Galaxy. Due to the fact that their ages and metallicities can be determined with relatively good precision, and since they can be observed even at great distances, they are excellent tracers of the variations in the abundance of heavy chemical elements with age and position in the Galactic disk. In the present work we analyze the star formation history and the chemical evolution of the disk of the Galaxy using numerical simulations of the dynamical evolution of the system of open clusters in the Milky Way. Starting from hypotheses on the history of cluster formation and the chemical enrichment of the disk, we model the present properties of the Galactic open cluster system. The comparison of these models with the observations allows us to examine the validity of the assumed hypotheses and to improve our knowledge about the initial conditions of the chemical evolution of the Galactic disk.

Abstract:Chemical abundances are an essential tool in untangling the Milky Way's enrichment history. However, the evolution of the interstellar medium abundance gradient with cosmic time is lost as a result of radial mixing processes. For the first time, we quantify the evolution of many observational abundances across the Galactic disk as a function of lookback time and birth radius, $R_\text{birth}$. Using an empirical approach, we derive $R_\text{birth}$ estimates for 145,447 APOGEE DR17 red giant disk stars, based solely on their ages and [Fe/H]. We explore the detailed evolution of 6 abundances (Mg, Ca ($\alpha$), Mn (iron-peak), Al, C (light), Ce (s-process)) across the Milky Way disk using 87,426 APOGEE DR17 red giant stars. We discover that the interstellar medium had three fluctuations in the metallicity gradient $\sim 9$, $\sim 6$, and $\sim4$ Gyr ago. The first coincides with the end of high-$\alpha$ sequence formation around the time of the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus disruption, while the others are likely related to passages of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. A clear distinction is found between present-day observed radial gradients with age and the evolution with lookback time for both [X/Fe] and [X/H], resulting from the significant flattening and inversion in old populations due to radial migration. We find the [Fe/H]--[$\alpha$/Fe] bimodality is also seen as a separation in the $R_\text{birth}$--[X/Fe] plane for the light and $\alpha$-elements. Our results recover the chemical enrichment of the Galactic disk over the past 12 Gyr, providing tight constraints on Galactic disk chemical evolution models.

Chemical Evolution in Galactic Nuclear Discs

Abstract:Nuclear Stellar Discs have been observed in the vast majority of barred disc galaxies including the Milky Way. Their intense star formation is sustained by the intense gas inflows driven by their surrounding bars and frequently supports a large-scale galactic fountain. Despite their central role in galaxy evolution, their chemical evolution remains largely unexplored. Here we present the first systematic, multizonal modelling of the chemical evolution of these nuclear stellar discs. We argue that the chemical composition of nuclear stellar discs is best understood relative to the bar tips from which their gas is drawn. We make predictions of the detailed abundance profiles within the nuclear stellar disc under different accretion scenarios from the galactic bar and show by which observable differences they can be decided. We show that with their difference to normal disc star formation, nuclear discs offer a unique laboratory to break parameter degeneracies in chemical evolution models. This allows us to identify the effects of the main gas parameters and disentangle them from the global enrichment history. We show this for the example of the ejection fractions from the outer and nuclear disk.

Abstract:We employ the first two years of data from the near-infrared, high-resolution SDSS-III/APOGEE spectroscopic survey to investigate the distribution of metallicity and alpha-element abundances of stars over a large part of the Milky Way disk. Using a sample of ~10,000 kinematically-unbiased red-clump stars with ~5% distance accuracy as tracers, the [alpha/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] distribution of this sample exhibits a bimodality in [alpha/Fe] at intermediate metallicities, -0.9<[Fe/H]<-0.2, but at higher metallicities ([Fe/H]=+0.2) the two sequences smoothly merge. We investigate the effects of the APOGEE selection function and volume filling fraction and find that these have little qualitative impact on the alpha-element abundance patterns. The described abundance pattern is found throughout the range 5<R<11 kpc and 0<|Z|<2 kpc across the Galaxy. The [alpha/Fe] trend of the high-alpha sequence is surprisingly constant throughout the Galaxy, with little variation from region to region (~10%). Using simple galactic chemical evolution models we derive an average star formation efficiency (SFE) in the high-alpha sequence of ~4.5E-10 1/yr, which is quite close to the nearly-constant value found in molecular-gas-dominated regions of nearby spirals. This result suggests that the early evolution of the Milky Way disk was characterized by stars that shared a similar star formation history and were formed in a well-mixed, turbulent, and molecular-dominated ISM with a gas consumption timescale (1/SFE) of ~2 Gyr. Finally, while the two alpha-element sequences in the inner Galaxy can be explained by a single chemical evolutionary track this cannot hold in the outer Galaxy, requiring instead a mix of two or more populations with distinct enrichment histories.

Abstract:Open clusters are ideal tools for tracing the abundances of different elements because their stars are expected to have the same age, distance, and metallicity. Therefore, they serve as powerful tracers for investigating the cosmic origins of elements. This paper expands on a recent study by us, in which the element fluorine was studied in seven open clusters; here we add six open clusters and eight field stars. The primary objective is to determine the abundance of fluorine (F) to gain insight into its production and evolution. The magnesium (Mg) abundances were derived to categorize the field stars into high and low alpha disk populations. Additionally, cerium (Ce) abundances were determined to better understand the interplay between F and s-process elements. Our goal is to analyze the trend of F abundances across the Galactic disk based on metallicity and age. By comparing observational data with Galactic chemical evolution models, the origin of F can be better understood. The spectra were obtained from the high-resolution near-infrared GIANO-B instrument at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). For the derivation of the stellar parameters and abundances, the Python version of Spectroscopy Made Easy ( PySME ) was used. OH, CN, and CO molecular lines and band heads along with Fe I lines were used to determine the stellar parameters in the H-band region. Two HF lines in the K band ($ 2.28, and 2.33 mu m), three K-band Mg I lines ($ 2.10, 2.11, and 2.15 mu m), and two Ce II lines in the H band ($ 1.66, and 1.71 mu m) were used to derive the abundances of F, Mg, and Ce, respectively. F, Mg, and Ce abundances were derived for 14 stars from 6 OCs, as well as for 8 field stars. The F and Ce abundances were investigated as a function of metallicity, age, and galactocentric distance. We also compared our findings with different Galactic chemical evolution models. Our results indicate that asymptotic giant branch stars and massive stars, including a subset of fast rotators (whose rotation speed likely increases as metallicity decreases), are necessary to explain the cosmic origin of F. This finding is consistent with and, with the large sample size, reinforces the conclusion of our previous study.

New Dimensions of Galactic Chemical Evolution

Abstract:Dramatic recent progress in understanding galactic chemical evolution (GCE) has been driven partly by direct observations of the distant past with HST and JWST of stellar abundances from giant high-resolution spectroscopic surveys (APOGEE, GALAH) and the complementary power of Gaia astrometry and photometry. Focusing on archaeology, I give a rapid-fire, and I hope synthesizing, review of work my collaborators and I have done on theoretical modeling and observational interpretation. I discuss (1) the interleaved but distinguishable roles of stellar scale astrophysics and galactic scale astrophysics in governing GCE, (2) the use of abundance ratio trends to empirically infer nucleosynthetic yields, (3) the uncertainty in the overall scale of yields and its degeneracy with the importance of galactic outflows, (4) the emergence of equilibrium in GCE, (5) the dimensionality of the stellar distribution in chemical abundance space, and (6) insights from chemical abundances on the early history of the Milky Way, including measurements of the intrinsic scatter of abundance ratios in metal-poor stars (-2 < [Fe/H] < -1), suggesting that a typical halo star at this metallicity is enriched by the products of $N \sim 50$ supernovae mixed over $\sim 10^5 M_\odot$ of star-forming gas.

Abstract:Theoretical physical-chemical models for the formation of planetary systems depend on data quality for the Sun's composition, that of stars in the solar neighbourhood, and of the estimated "pristine" compositions for stellar systems. The effective scatter and the observational uncertainties of elements within a few hundred parsecs from the Sun, even for the most abundant metals like carbon, oxygen and silicon, are still controversial. Here we analyse the stellar production and the chemical evolution of key elements that underpin the formation of rocky (C, O, Mg, Si) and gas/ice giant planets (C, N, O, S). We calculate 198 galactic chemical evolution (GCE) models of the solar neighbourhood to analyse the impact of different sets of stellar yields, of the upper mass limit for massive stars contributing to GCE ($M_{\rm up}$) and of supernovae from massive-star progenitors which do not eject the bulk of the iron-peak elements (faint supernovae). Even considering the GCE variation produced via different sets of stellar yields, the observed dispersion of elements reported for stars in the Milky Way disk is not reproduced. Among others, the observed range of super-solar [Mg/Si] ratios, sub-solar [S/N], and the dispersion of up to 0.5 dex for [S/Si] challenge our models. The impact of varying $M_{\rm up}$ depends on the adopted supernova yields. Thus, observations do not provide a constraint on the M$_{\rm up}$ parametrization. When including the impact of faint supernova models in GCE calculations, elemental ratios vary by up to 0.1-0.2 dex in the Milky Way disk; this modification better reproduces observations.

Chemical evolution of neutron capture elements in our Galaxy and in the dwarf spheroidal galaxies of the Local Group

Abstract:By adopting a chemical evolution model for the Milky Way already reproducing the evolution of several chemical elements, we compare our theoretical results with accurate and new stellar data of neutron capture elements and we are able to impose strong constraints on the nucleosynthesis of the studied elements. We can suggest the stellar sites of production for each element. In particular, the r-process component of each element (if any) is produced in the mass range from 10 to 30 Msun, whereas the s-process component arises from stars in the range from 1 to 3 Msun. Using the same chemical evolution model, extended to different galactocentric distances, we obtain results on the radial gradients of the Milky Way. We compare the results of the model not only for the neutron capture elements but also for alpha-elements and iron peak elements with new data of Cepheids stars. We give a possible explanation to the considerable scatter of neutron capture elements observed in low metallicity stars in the solar vicinity, compared to the small star to star scatter observed for the alpha-elements. In fact, we have developed a stochastic chemical evolution model, in which the main assumption is a random formation of new stars, subject to the condition that the cumulative mass distribution follows a given initial mass function. With our model we are able to reproduce the different features of neutron capture elements and alpha-elements. Finally, we test the prescriptions for neutron capture elements also for the dwarf spheroidal galaxies of the Local Group. We predict that the chemical evolution of these elements in dwarf spheroidal galaxies is different from the evolution in the solar vicinity and indicates that dwarf spheroidal galaxies (we see nowadays) cannot be the building blocks of our Galaxy.
Chemical evolution of the Galactic bulge: different stellar populations and possible gradients

Abstract:We compute the chemical evolution of the Galactic bulge to explain the existence of two main stellar populations recently observed. After comparing model results and observational data we suggest that the old more metal poor stellar population formed very fast (on a timescale of 0.1-0.3 Gyr) by means of an intense burst of star formation and an initial mass function flatter than in the solar vicinity whereas the metal rich population formed on a longer timescale (3 Gyr). We predict differences in the mean abundances of the two populations (-0.52 dex for <[Fe/H]>) which can be interpreted as a metallicity gradients. We also predict possible gradients for Fe, O, Mg, Si, S and Ba between sub-populations inside the metal poor population itself (e.g. -0.145 dex for <[Fe/H]>). Finally, by means of a chemo-dynamical model following a dissipational collapse, we predict a gradient inside 500 pc from the Galactic center of -0.26 dex kpc^{-1} in Fe.

Chemical evolution of a protoplanetary disk

Abstract:In this paper we review recent progress in our understanding of the chemical evolution of protoplanetary disks. Current observational constraints and theoretical modeling on the chemical composition of gas and dust in these systems are presented. Strong variations of temperature, density, high-energy radiation intensities in these disks, both radially and vertically, result in a peculiar disk chemical structure, where a variety of processes are active. In hot, dilute and heavily irradiated atmosphere only the most photostable simple radicals and atoms and atomic ions exist, formed by gas-phase processes. Beneath the atmosphere a partly UV-shielded, warm molecular layer is located, where high-energy radiation drives rich ion-molecule and radical-radical chemistry, both in the gas phase and on dust surfaces. In a cold, dense, dark disk midplane many molecules are frozen out, forming thick icy mantles where surface chemistry is active and where complex polyatomic (organic) species are synthesized. Dynamical processes affect disk chemical composition by enriching it in abundances of complex species produced via slow surface processes, which will become detectable with ALMA.

The chemical evolution of the Milky Way thin disk using solar twins

Abstract:In this study we address whether the age--metallicity relation (AMR) deviates from the expected trend of metallicity increasing smoothly with age. We also show the presence (or absence) of two populations, as recently claimed using a relatively small dataset. Moreover, we studied the Milky Way thin disk's chemical evolution using solar twins, including the effect of radial migration and accretion events. In particular, we exploited high-resolution spectroscopy of a large sample of solar twins in tandem with an accurate age determination to investigate the Milky Way thin disk age--metallicity relationship. Additionally, we derived the stars' birth radius and studied the chemical evolution of the thin disk. We discovered that statistical and selection biases can lead to a misinterpretation of the observational data. An accurate accounting of all the uncertainties led us to detect no separation in the AMR into different populations for solar twins around the Sun (-0.3 < [Fe/H] < 0.3 dex). This lead us to the conclusion that the thin disk was formed relatively smoothly. For the main scenario of the Milky Way thin disk formation, we suggest that the main mechanism for reaching today's chemical composition around the Sun is radial migration with the possible contribution of well-known accretion events such as Gaia-Enceladus/Sausage (GES) and Sagittarius (Sgr).

The Chemical Enrichment of the Milky Way Disk Evaluated Using Conditional Abundances

Abstract:Chemical abundances of Milky Way disk stars are empirical tracers of its enrichment history. However, they capture joint-information that is valuable to disentangle. In this work, we quantify how individual abundances evolve across the present-day Galactic radius, at fixed supernovae contribution ([Fe/H], [Mg/Fe]). We use 18,135 Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment Data Release 17 red clump stars and 7943 GALactic Archaeology with HERMES Data Release 3 main-sequence stars to compare the abundance distributions conditioned on ([Fe/H], [Mg/Fe]) across 3–13 kpc and 6.5–9.5 kpc, respectively. We examine 15 elements: C, N, Al, K (light), O, Si, S, Ca, (α), Mn, Ni, Cr, Cu, (iron-peak) Ce, Ba (s-process) and Eu (r-process). We find that the conditional neutron-capture and light elements most significantly trace variations in the disk's enrichment history, with absolute conditional radial gradients ≤0.03 dex kpc −1 . The other elements studied have absolute conditional gradients ≲0.01 dex kpc −1 . We uncover structured conditional abundance variations with [Fe/H] for the low-α, but not the high-α , sequence. The average scatter between the mean conditional abundances at different radii is σ intrinsic ≈ 0.02 dex (Ce, Eu, Ba σ intrinsic > 0.05 dex). These results serve as a measure of the magnitude via which different elements trace Galactic radial enrichment history once fiducial supernovae correlations are accounted for. Furthermore, we uncover subtle systematic variations in moments of the conditional abundance distributions and bimodal differences in [Al/Fe]. These suggest a nonuniform enrichment of each chemical cell, and will presumably constrain chemical evolution models of the Galaxy.

Birth of the Galactic Disk Revealed by the H3 Survey

Abstract:We use chemistry ([alpha/Fe] and [Fe/H]), main sequence turnoff ages, and kinematics determined from H3 Survey spectroscopy and Gaia astrometry to identify the birth of the Galactic disk. We separate in-situ and accreted stars on the basis of angular momenta and eccentricities. The sequence of high-alpha in-situ stars persists down to at least [Fe/H]=-2.5 and shows unexpected non-monotonic behavior: with increasing metallicity the population first declines in [alpha/Fe], then increases over the range -1.3<[Fe/H]<-0.7, and then declines again at higher metallicities. The number of stars in the in-situ population rapidly increases above [Fe/H]=-1. The average kinematics of these stars are hot and independent of metallicity at [Fe/H]<-1 and then become increasingly cold and disk-like at higher metallicities. The ages of the in-situ, high-alpha stars are uniformly very old (13 Gyr) at [Fe/H]<-1.3, and span a wider range (8-12 Gyr) at higher metallicities. Interpreting the chemistry with a simple chemical evolution model suggests that the non-monotonic behavior is due to a significant increase in star formation efficiency, which began 13 Gyr ago. These results support a picture in which the first 1 Gyr of the Galaxy was characterized by a "simmering phase" in which the star formation efficiency was low and the kinematics had substantial disorder with some net rotation. The disk then underwent a dramatic transformation to a "boiling phase", in which the star formation efficiency increased substantially, the kinematics became disk-like, and the number of stars formed increased tenfold. We interpret this transformation as the birth of the Galactic disk at z~4. The physical origin of this transformation is unclear and does not seem to be reproduced in current galaxy formation models.

Abstract:We studied the star formation and chemical evolution in a sample of eight dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies of the Local Group and in blue compact galaxies (BCGs) by means of comparison between the predictions of chemical evolution models and several observed abundance ratios. Detailed models with up‐to‐date nucleosynthesis taking into account the role played by supernovae of different types (II, Ia) were developed for both types of galaxies, allowing us to follow the evolution of several chemical elements (H, D, He, C, N, O, Mg, Si, S, Ca and Fe). The models are specified by the prescriptions of the star formation and galactic wind efficiencies chosen to reproduce the main features of these galaxies. The BCGs are characterized by a star formation proceeding in several short bursts separated by long quiescent periods and by a low wind efficiency, whereas one or two long bursts and a very efficient wind well describe the dSph galaxies. We also investigated a possible connection in the evolution of dSph and BCGs and compared the predictions of the models to the abundance ratios observed in damped Lyman α systems (DLAs). The main conclusions are: (i) the observed distribution of [α/Fe] versus [Fe/H] in dSph galaxies is mainly a result of the star formation rate coupled with the wind efficiency; (ii) a low star formation efficiency (ν= 0.01–1 Gyr−1) and a high wind efficiency (wi∼ 5–15) are required to reproduce the observational data for dSph galaxies; (iii) the low gas content of these galaxies is the result of the combined action of gas consumption by star formation and gas removal by galactic winds; (iv) the abundance ratios of the BCGs are reproduced by models with two to seven bursts of star formation and an efficiency in the range ν= 0.1–0.9 Gyr−1; (v) the low values of N/O observed in BCGs are the natural result of a bursting star formation; (vi) a connection between dSph and BCGs in a unified evolutionary scenario is unlikely; (vii) the models for both the dSph galaxies and BCGs reproduce the abundance ratios observed in DLAs, but imply different formation scenarios for these objects; (viii) a suitable amount of primary N produced in massive stars can be perhaps an explanation for the low plateau in the [N/α] distribution observed in DLAs, if real.

Abstract:[Abridged] In this first paper of this series, we present a new approach for studying the chemo-dynamical evolution in disk galaxies, which consists of fusing disk chemical evolution models with compatible numerical simulations of galactic disks. This method avoids known star formation and chemical enrichment problems encountered in simulations. Here we focus on the Milky Way, by using a detailed thin-disk chemical evolution model and a simulation in the cosmological context, with dynamical properties close to those of our Galaxy. We show that, due to radial migration from mergers at high redshift and the central bar at later times, a sizable fraction of old metal-poor high-[alpha/Fe] stars reaches the solar vicinity. This naturally accounts for a number of recent observations related to both the thin and thick disks, despite the fact that we use thin-disk chemistry only. Although significant radial mixing is present, the slope in the age-metallicity relation is only weakly affected, with a scatter compatible with recent observational work. While we find a smooth density distribution in the [O/Fe]-[Fe/H] plane, we can recover the observed discontinuity by selecting particles according to kinematic criteria used in high-resolution samples to define the thin and thick disks. We outline a new method for estimating the birth place of the Sun and predict that the most likely radius lies in the range 4.4 < r < 7.7 kpc (for a location at r = 8 kpc). A new, unifying model for the Milky Way thick disk is offered, where both mergers and radial migration play a role at different stages of the disk evolution. We show that in the absence of early-on massive mergers the vertical velocity dispersion of the oldest stars is underestimated by a factor of ~2 compared with observations. We can, therefore, argue that the Milky Way thick disk is unlikely to have been formed through a quiescent disk evolution.

Inhomogeneous Galactic Chemical Evolution: Modelling Ultra-Faint Dwarf Galaxies of the Large Magellanic Cloud

Abstract:Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies are among the oldest and most metal-poor galaxies in the cosmos, observed to contain no gas and a high dark matter mass fraction. Understanding the chemical abundance dispersion in such extreme environments could shed light on the very first generations of stars. We present a novel inhomogeneous chemical evolution model, {\tt i-GEtool}, that we apply to two ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, Carina II and Reticulum II, both satellites of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Our model is based on the Monte Carlo sampling of the initial mass function as star formation proceeds in different gas cells of the galaxy volume. We account for the chemical enrichment of Supernova bubbles as they spread in the interstellar medium, causing dispersion in the elemental abundances. We recreate the abundance patterns of $\alpha$- and odd-$\textit{Z}$ elements, predicting two sequences in [C/Fe] and [N/Fe] at all metallicities. Our models underestimate [C/Fe] and [Ti/Fe] because of the large uncertainty in the adopted stellar nucleosynthesis yields. We discuss that the observed C and N abundances had likely been affected by internal mixing processes, which changed the initial surface abundances in the red giants. Our Supernova feedback scheme is responsible for driving galactic outflows, which quench the star formation activity at early times. We predict an average outflow mass-loading factor $\approx 10^{3}$, which extrapolates towards very low galaxy stellar masses the trend observed at high masses. Finally, by combining our model with the MIST isochrone database, we compare our synthetic colour-magnitude diagrams to observations.

Abstract:Context. The metallicity distribution function (MDF) of the Galactic bulge is characterized by a multi-peak shape, with a metal-poor peak centered at [Fe/H] ∼ −0.3 dex and a metal-rich peak centered at [Fe/H] ∼ +0.3 dex. The bimodality of the MDF is also reflected in the [ α /Fe] versus [Fe/H] abundance ratios, suggesting the presence of different stellar populations in the bulge. Aims. In this work we aim to reproduce the observed MDF of the Galactic bulge by testing a scenario in which the metal-poor component of the bulge is formed by stars formed in situ, during a strong burst of star formation, while the metal-rich population is formed by stars created in situ during a second burst of star formation and/or stars accreted from the innermost part of the Galactic disk as an effect of a growing bar. Methods. We adopted a chemical evolution model that is able to follow the evolution of several chemical species with detailed nucleosynthesis prescriptions. In particular, because of the importance of the production of Fe in constraining the MDF, close attention is paid to the production of this element in both Type Ia supernovae and massive stars. In particular, we included yields from rotating massive stars with different rotational velocity prescriptions. Our model also takes the infall and outflow of gas into account, as well as the effect of stellar migration. Results are compared to ∼13 000 stars from the SDSS/APOGEE survey that belong to the region located at a Galactocentric distance R GC ≤ 3.5 kpc. Results. We successfully reproduce the observed double-peak shape of the bulge MDF as well as the abundance trends of the α elements relative to Fe by assuming both (i) a multi-burst star formation history with a quenching of the first burst of ∼10 2 Myr and (ii) migration of stars from the innermost part of the Milky Way disk, as an effect of a growing bar. According to our results, the fraction of the stellar mass of the bulge-bar that belongs to the inner disk is ∼40%. In terms of the nucleosynthesis, we conclude that models that assume either no rotation for massive stars or a distribution of rotational velocities that favors slow rotation at high metallicities best reproduce the observed MDF as well as the [ α /Fe] and the [Ce/Fe] versus [Fe/H] abundance patterns.

Abstract:Protoplanetary disks are the birthplaces of planetary systems. The evolution of the star-disk system and the disk chemical composition determines the initial conditions for planet formation. Therefore a comprehensive understanding of the main physical and chemical processes in disks is crucial for our understanding of planet formation. We give an overview of the early evolution of disks, discuss the importance of the stellar high-energy radiation for disk evolution and describe the general thermal and chemical structure of disks. Finally we provide an overview of observational tracers of the gas component and disk winds.
