Equatorial source of oblique electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves: peculiarities in the ion distribution function

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are important for Earth's inner magnetosphere as they can effectively drive relativistic electron losses to the atmosphere and energetic (ring current) ion scattering and isotropization. EMIC waves are generated by transversely anisotropic ion populations around the equatorial source region, and for typical magnetospheric conditions this almost always produces field-aligned waves. For many specific occasions, however, oblique EMIC waves are observed, and such obliquity has been commonly attributed to the wave off-equatorial propagation in curved dipole magnetic fields. In this study, we report that very oblique EMIC waves can be directly generated at the equatorial source region. Using THEMIS spacecraft observations at the dawn flank, we show that such oblique wave generation is possible in the presence of a field-aligned thermal ion population, likely of ionospheric origin, which can reduce Landau damping of oblique EMIC waves and cyclotron generation of field-aligned waves. This generation mechanism underlines the importance of magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling processes in controlling wave characteristics in the inner magnetosphere.

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are one commonly observed plasma waves in the Earth's inner magnetosphere and play a crucial role in particle dynamics in the radiation belt and ring current. EMIC waves are excited by a proton temperature anisotropy and generally have a left-handed polarization, however satellite observations have usually reported the existence of linearly polarized EMIC waves in the inner magnetosphere. In this paper, we employ a two-dimensional (2D) hybrid code in a dipole field (gcPIC-hybrid) to simulate the propagation of EMIC waves from the equatorial source region. We track one single EMIC wave packet and analyze how its properties evolve along its trajectory. In diagnosing the wave normal angle (WNA) of the packet, we propose a novel method called Wave Front Shape Identification (WFSI). The ellipticity can also been calculated after we know the WNA. By comparing the ellipticity calculated from the linear theory and the ellipticity diagnosed from the simulation, we conclude that in a proton-electron plasma, EMIC waves would turn from a left-handed polarization to a linear polarization solely due to the propagation effect when the waves propagate toward higher latitudes and become oblique. We also find that the peak frequency of the wave packet (the wave mode with the maximum amplitude) decreases when propagating toward higher latitudes, which is due to different growth and damping behavior of different modes.

Abstract:Since electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves in the terrestrial magnetosphere play a crucial role in the dynamic losses of relativistic electrons and energetic protons and in the ion heating, it is important to pursue a comprehensive understanding of the EMIC wave dispersion relation under realistic circumstances, which can shed significant light on the generation, amplification, and propagation of magnetospheric EMIC waves. The full kinetic linear dispersion relation is implemented in the present study to evaluate the linear growth of EMIC waves in a multi-ion (H+, He+, and O+) magnetospheric plasma that also consists of hot ring current protons. Introduction of anisotropic hot protons strongly modifies the EMIC wave dispersion surface and can result in the simultaneous growth of H+-, He+-, and O+-band EMIC emissions. Our parametric analysis demonstrates that an increase in the hot proton concentration can produce the generation of H+- and He+-band EMIC waves with higher possibility. While the excitation of H+-band emissions requires relatively larger temperature anisotropy of hot protons, He+-band emissions are more likely to be triggered in the plasmasphere or plasmaspheric plume where the background plasma is denser. In addition, the generation of He+-band waves is more sensitive to the variation of proton temperature than H+-band waves. Increase of cold heavy ion (He+ and O+) density increases the H+ cutoff frequency and therefore widens the frequency coverage of the stop band above the He+ gyrofrequency, leading to a significant damping of H+-band EMIC waves. In contrast, O+-band EMIC waves characteristically exhibit the temporal growth much weaker than the other two bands, regardless of all considered variables, suggesting that O+-band emissions occur at a rate much lower than H+- and He+-band emissions, which is consistent with the observations.

Abstract:Based on the linear theory, the detailed growth rate expression of plasma waves for hot ions with ring velocity distributions is derived, which can be directly used to study the wave growth with satellite data. Using linear growth rate calculations with simple magnetic field and background plasma density models, the roles of five parameters (N-e,N-eta H + : eta He + :eta(O) +, E-r, T-perp, and T-para) playing in the excitation of O+ band electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves driven by hot H+ with ring velocity distributions are investigated. Our calculations demonstrate that ring distributions with sufficiently large ring velocity Vr, small perpendicular thermal spread V., and appropriate parallel thermal spread V// could enhance the wave growth of oblique O+ band EMIC waves. Moreover, our results show that O+ band EMIC waves considered here are mainly unstable with large wave normal angles in a dense and rich O+ background plasma, in consistent with the statistical characteristics of O+ band EMIC waves previously observed by satellites. Therefore, it is indicated that hot H+ with ring velocity distributions should play an important role in the excitation of O+ band EMIC waves, as a necessary and useful supplement to ring current ions with temperature- anisotropy biMaxwellian distributions.

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves and magnetosonic waves are commonly observed in the Earth's magnetosphere associated with enhanced ring current activity. Using wave and ion measurements from the Van Allen Probes, we identify clear correlations between the hydrogen- and helium-band EMIC waves with the enhancement of trapped helium and oxygen ion fluxes, respectively. We calculate the diffusion coefficients of different ion species using quasi-linear theory to understand the effects of resonant scattering by EMIC waves. Our calculations indicate that EMIC waves can cause pitch angle scattering loss of several keV to hundreds of keV ions, and heating of tens of eV to several keV helium and oxygen ions by hydrogen- and helium-band EMIC waves, respectively. Moreover, we found that magnetosonic waves can cause the resonant heating of thermal protons. Our study indicates the importance of energy transfer from the EMIC and magnetosonic waves to ions with different species at thermal energies.
Energy Conversion Between Ions and Electrons Through Ion Cyclotron Waves and Embedded Ion-scale Rotational Discontinuity in Collisionless Space Plasmas

Abstract:Wave–particle interaction is a fundamental process in collisionless plasma, which results in the redistribution of energy between plasma waves and particle species. The analysis of high-resolution Magnetospheric Multiscale plasma and magnetic field data directly reveals the energy exchange between electromagnetic energy, particle bulk kinetic energy, and thermal kinetic energy in magnetosheath turbulence. This work focuses on the energy transfer associated with ion cyclotron waves (ICWs) and embedded rotational discontinuity (RD). We find that (1) the particle kinetic energy of ions is converted into electromagnetic energy; (2) the electrons are gaining energy from electromagnetic fields, having significant electron heating in the parallel direction around the RD; (3) the ICWs and RD connect and redistribute energy between ions and electrons in the postshock downstream sheath region; and (4) the interactions between pressure tensor and strain tensor redistribute the ion and electron bulk and thermal kinetic energies, but less significantly than direct field–particle interaction by one order of magnitude in the ICW turbulence with weak compressibility, in the sense that , .

Abstract:Particle energization and energy dissipation in electromagnetic environments are longstanding topics of intensive research in space, laboratory, and astrophysical plasmas. One challenge is to understand these conversion processes at smaller and smaller spatial/temporal scales. In this Letter, with very high cadence measurements of particle distributions from the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft, we report evidence of evolution of an identified microscale (i.e., electron gyro-scale) magnetic cavity structure and reveal within it a unique energization process that does not adhere to prevailing adiabatic invariance theory. Our finding indicates that this process is largely energy dependent, and can accelerate/decelerate charged particles inside the trapping region during their gyromotion, clearly altering the particle distribution.

Abstract:Turbulence is often enhanced when transmitted through a collisionless plasma shock. We investigate how the enhanced turbulent energy in the Earth's magnetosheath effectively dissipates via vortex arrays. This research topic is of great importance as it relates to particle energization at astrophysical shocks across the universe. Wave modes and intermittent coherent structures are the key candidate mechanisms for energy conversion in turbulent plasmas. Here, by comparing in-situ measurements in the Earth's magnetosheath with a theoretical model, we find the existence of vortex arrays at the transition between the downstream regions of the Earth's bow shock. Vortex arrays consist of quasi-orthogonal kinetic waves and exhibit both high volumetric filling factors and strong local energy conversion, thereby showing a greater dissipative energization than traditional waves and coherent structures. Therefore, we propose that vortex arrays are a promising mechanism for efficient energy conversion in the sheath regions downstream of astrophysical shocks.

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves have been proposed to cause efficient losses of highly relativistic (>1MeV) electrons via gyroresonant interactions. Simultaneous observations of EMIC waves and equatorial electron pitch angle distributions, which can be used to directly quantify the EMIC wave scattering effect, are still very limited, however. In the present study, we evaluate the effect of EMIC waves on pitch angle scattering of ultrarelativistic (>1MeV) electrons during the main phase of a geomagnetic storm, when intense EMIC wave activity was observed in situ (in the plasma plume region with high plasma density) on both Van Allen Probes. EMIC waves captured by Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) probes and on the ground across the Canadian Array for Real-time Investigations of Magnetic Activity (CARISMA) are also used to infer their magnetic local time (MLT) coverage. From the observed EMIC wave spectra and local plasma parameters, we compute wave diffusion rates and model the evolution of electron pitch angle distributions. By comparing model results with local observations of pitch angle distributions, we show direct, quantitative evidence of EMIC wave-driven relativistic electron losses in the Earth's outer radiation belt.
Examining Wave Vector and Minimum Cyclotron Resonant Electron Energy of EMIC Waves with Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission

Abstract:Wave number vectors k and minimum cyclotron resonant electron energies Emin of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are analyzed via the phase differencing technique by using Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission data. It is demonstrated that the phase differencing method provides an estimate of the dominant wave number when finite k spectrum broadenings occur. A case study is conducted for the EMIC event on 20 November 2015, showing remarkable agreements with spectral analysis in wave propagation directions. We find that obtained wave vectors, roughly agreeing with the validity of cold plasma theory, might significantly vary from wave packet to wave packet. Numerical calculations indicate that Emin can range from 0.5 to tens of MeV, suggesting that EMIC waves can effectively interact with those relativistic electrons. This study enriches our understanding of the applicability of phase differencing. It further supports that EMIC waves can be responsible for the loss of electrons with an extremely broad energy range in the magnetosphere.
Localized Excitation of Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves From Anisotropic Protons Filtered by Magnetic Dips

Abstract:The excitation of electrostatic and/or electromagnetic waves in the plasma universe is often associated with anisotropic velocity distributions of charged particles. In Earth's inner magnetosphere, this anisotropy can gradually develop as particles injected from the magnetotail drift around the Earth at different speeds depending on their energy and pitch angle. Here, we show that the perpendicular-moving and bouncing ions can be separated more abruptly near the injection front. These pitch-angle filters are localized magnetic dip structures formed by the diamagnetic behavior of the injected particles, which can trap perpendicular-moving ions and allow bouncing ions to overtake. The resulting ion anisotropy facilitates the rapid generation of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves, which in turn can largely reshape the Van Allen radiation belts. This scenario is examined by case and statistical observations, together with numerical simulations that reproduce most of the observational signatures, to support the causal relationship between magnetic dips, anisotropic ion distributions, and localized excitation of EMIC waves. Our study highlights the important roles of magnetic dips in the inner magnetospheric dynamics, as pitch-angle filters of the injected ions and traveling hotspots of EMIC wave activities.

Nonresonant scattering of energetic electrons by electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves: spacecraft observations and theoretical framework

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves lead to rapid scattering of relativistic electrons in Earth's radiation belts, due to their large amplitudes relative to other waves that interact with electrons of this energy range. A central feature of electron precipitation driven by EMIC waves is deeply elusive. That is, moderate precipitating fluxes at energies below the minimum resonance energy of EMIC waves occur concurrently with strong precipitating fluxes at resonance energies in low-altitude spacecraft observations. This paper expands on a previously reported solution to this problem: nonresonant scattering due to wave packets. The quasi-linear diffusion model is generalized to incorporate nonresonant scattering by a generic wave shape. The diffusion rate decays exponentially away from the resonance, where shorter packets lower decay rates and thus widen the energy range of significant scattering. Using realistic EMIC wave packets from $\delta f$ particle-in-cell simulations, test particle simulations are performed to demonstrate that intense, short packets extend the energy of significant scattering well below the minimum resonance energy, consistent with our theoretical prediction. Finally, the calculated precipitating-to-trapped flux ratio of relativistic electrons is compared to ELFIN observations, and the wave power spectra is inferred based on the measured flux ratio. We demonstrate that even with a narrow wave spectrum, short EMIC wave packets can provide moderately intense precipitating fluxes well below the minimum resonance energy.

Propagation of EMIC Waves Inside the Plasmasphere: A Two‐Event Study

Abstract:Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are important for the loss of high-energy electrons in the radiation belt. Based on the measurements of Van Allen Probes, two events during the same storm period are presented to study the propagation of EMIC waves. In the first event, left-handed polarized EMIC waves were observed near the plasmapause, while right-handed waves were observed in the inner plasmasphere. The Poynting flux of the right-hand waves was mainly directed inward and equatorward, and no positive growth rates were obtained in the region of these right-hand waves, indicating the inward propagation of the waves from a higher L-shell. In the second event, the wave vectors were quasi-perpendicular to the background magnetic field inside the plasmaspheric plume but became quasi-parallel outside. This phenomenon can be explained by the refraction of the large density gradient, which qualitatively satisfies Snell's law. These observations provide indirect evidence of the inward propagation of the EMIC waves and give a new insight on how density gradients may modify wave properties.
Amplitude‐Dependent Properties and Excitation Mechanisms of EMIC Waves in the Earth's Inner Magnetosphere

Abstract:Large-amplitude (B-w > 1 nT) electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves can cause the rapid loss of >1 MeV electrons, greatly impacting radiation belt dynamics. With long-term Van Allen Probe B observations from 2013 to 2018, we conducted a statistical survey to reveal the amplitude-dependent EMIC wave properties and excitation mechanisms in the Earth's inner magnetosphere. Statistical results show that large-amplitude EMIC waves prefer to occur in the afternoon-dusk sector in the northern hemisphere and tend to be more left-hand polarized with smaller wave normal angles. In addition, the high proton beta parallel conditions also favor the generation of larger-amplitude EMIC waves. From the variations of EMIC wave occurrence rate as a function of SuperMAG electrojet (SME) index and solar wind dynamic pressure, we find that the small-amplitude EMIC waves are generally triggered by high solar wind dynamic pressure, while large-amplitude EMIC wave generation is both affected by substorm activity and solar wind dynamic pressure. The normalized magnetic field perturbations during EMIC wave appearance, which enable us to distinguish the relative roles of magnetospheric compression and substorm injection in the excitation of different-amplitude EMIC waves, provide further evidence that as wave amplitude increases, substorm injection plays a more important role in EMIC wave excitation, and magnetospheric compression is also an indispensable trigger.

Abstract:EMEC waves driven by kinetic anisotropies and suprathermal particles are expected to play an important role at dissipative scales in the solar wind and planetary magnetospheres. Moreover, the correlation of EMEC waves with electric field magnitude and direction can be a tool to probe the inner magnetosphere. Thus, in this manuscript, we present the study of EMEC waves driven by temperature anisotropy in bi‐Kappa distributed space plasmas in the presence of a parallel DC electric field. The dispersion equation bearing the influence of electric field and suprathermal particles followed by the analytical expressions for wave frequency and wave growth rate is derived. The general dispersion equation is solved numerically to unveil the effect of suprathermal particles, temperature anisotropy, and the magnitude of the electric field on growth rate as well as the domain of unstable wave numbers, and the obtained numerical outcomes are compared with those of the bi‐Maxwellian model. Moreover, the maximum growth rates for EMEC waves have also been obtained.

Triggering process of electromagnetic ion cyclotron rising tone emissions in the inner magnetosphere

Abstract:Spacecraft observations and simulations show generation of coherent electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) triggered emissions with rising tone frequencies. In the inner magnetosphere, the spontaneously triggered EMIC waves are generated by the energetic protons with large temperature anisotropy. We reproduced EMIC triggered emissions in the Earth's magnetosphere by real scale hybrid simulations with cylindrical magnetic geometry. We obtained spontaneously triggered nonlinear EMIC waves with rising frequencies in the H+band of the EMIC dispersion relation. The proton holes in the phase space are formed. We have also derived the theoretical optimum wave amplitude for triggering process of the EMIC nonlinear wave growth. The optimum wave amplitude and the nonlinear transition time show a good agreement with the present simulation result. The nonlinear wave growth over a limited time forms a subpacket structure of a rising tone emission. The formation process of a subpacket is repeated because of a new triggering wave generated by the phase‐organized protons, which are released from the previous subpacket. Then, the EMIC triggered emission is formed as a train of subpackets generated at different rising frequencies. Abstract:There has been significant interest lately in the study of Electromagnetic (EM) waves interacting with magnetized plasmas. The variety of resonances and the existence of several pass and stop bands in the dispersion curve for different orientations of the magnetic field offer new mechanisms of EM wave energy absorption (PhysRevE.105.055209, Juneja_2023,vashistha2022localized,vashistha2020new). By an appropriate choice of inhomogeneous magnetic field, one can construct a configuration wherein the same EM wave pulse encounters more than one resonance in the plasma. A 2-D Particle - In - Cell (PIC) simulation using the OSIRIS4.0 platform has been carried out for the case of dual resonance. It is observed that in the presence of dual resonance, there is a significant enhancement in leading to almost complete absorption of laser energy by the plasma in certain cases. A detailed study of the influence of the relative location of the resonances, the effect of high input EM wave intensity, etc., has also been carried out.
