Abstract:In this work ternary blends of symmetric lamellae-forming poly(styrene-block-methyl methacrylate) block copolymer and polystyrene and PMMA homopolymers were prepared for the directed self-assembly (DSA) on chemically nanopatterned substrates using 2x density multiplication. Homopolymers with comparable molecular weights to that of the corresponding blocks in the block copolymer were used to adjust the periods of the blends. The periods of the blends increased from 38.5 to 50 nm as the volume fraction of homopolymers increased from 0 to 30%. The periods were analyzed by grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering, direct measurement from and fast Fourier transform of scanning electron microscopy images. DSA results indicate that the perfection and registration of the assembled films were mainly determined by the commensurability between the periods of the blends and the chemical patterns. Patterns with relatively small w/L-S (guiding stripe width/period of chemical pattern) led to mixed structures of dots and parallel structures. The process window of L-S where the block copolymer alignment shows a high degree of perfection was estimated at +/- 3.6% to +/- 4.6% L-o. (C) 2013 American Vacuum Society.

Abstract:Crystallisation-driven self-assembly (CDSA) has become an extremely valuable technique in the preparation of well-defined nanostructures using diblock copolymers. The use of triblock copolymers is considerably less well-known on account of more complex syntheses and assembly methods despite the functional advantages provided by a third block. Herein, we show the simple preparation of well-defined tuneable 1D and 2D structures based on poly(lactide) triblock copolymers of different block ratios synthesised by ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerisation, where a phase diagram based on a novel unimer solubility approach is proposed. Using a series of poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(N, N-dimethylacrylamide) (PLLA-b-PDMA) diblock copolymers and PDMA-b-PLLA-b-PDMA triblock copolymers with different core/corona ratios, single solvent CDSA processes revealed that comparatively hydrophilic polymers were liable to achieve 2D platelets, while the less hydrophilic counterparts yield 'transition state' wide cylinders and pure 1D cylinders. The length of crystalline core block is also shown to play an important role in fixed corona/core ratio systems, where a longer core block is prone to form cylindrical structures due to a lack of overall solubility, whereas a shorter block forms platelets. Importantly, this approach reveals contrary results to conventional theories, which state that longer solvophilic blocks relative to the core-forming block should favour more curved core/corona interfaces. Our morphological transitions are shown in both di-and tri-block copolymer systems, showing the generalisation of these assembly methods towards promising methodologies for the rational design of PLLA-based nanocarriers in the biomedical realm.

Abstract:A well-defined amphiphilic centipede-like copolymer of styrene and methacrylic acid (PS-PS-PMAA) was synthesized by the combination of living anionic polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The synthetic approach involves the first coupling reaction of polystyrene (PS) backbone bearing 1,1-diphenylethene (DPE) pendant groups with living polystyryllithium (PSLi), and sequential anionic polymerization of t-butyl methacrylate (tBMA) initiated by resulting 1,1-diphenylmethyl anion, and final hydrolysis of obtained PS-PS-PtBMA. The centipede-like copolymer PS-PS-PMAA was characterized by 1H NMR, IR, GPC, and SLS measurements. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of PS-PS-PMAA in water was determined by fluorescence probe technique. The self-assembly behavior of PS-PS-PMAA in water-THF mixture was observed by TEM. The results showed that the micellar morphology can be varied, such as vesicle, sphere, and agglomerate, depending on the THF content. These phenomena are worthy of further research in polymer physics field.

Abstract:A series of P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA tri-block co-polymers with various compositions, i.e., containing 2-10 lactoyl units, were prepared via ring opening polymerisation of d,l-lactide in the presence of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) (M-n = 1000 gmol(-1)) as the initiator and stannous 2-ethylhexanoate as the catalyst at different feed ratios. P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA co-polymers were then functionalised with acrylate groups using acryloyl chloride under various reaction conditions. The diacrylated P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA (diacryl-P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA) were further polymerised to synthesize soluble hyperbranched polymers by either homo-polymerisation or co-polymerisation with poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methylacrylate (PEGMEMA) via free radical polymerisation. The polymer samples obtained were characterised by H-1 NMR (proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-red spectroscopy), and GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography). Moreover, the diacryl-P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA macromers were used for the preparation of biodegradable crosslinked hydrogels through the Michael addition reaction and radical photo-polymerisation with or without poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methylacrylate (PEGMEMA, M-n = 475 gmol(-1)) as the co-monomer. It was found that fine tuning of the diacryl-P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA constituents and its combination with co-monomers resulted in hydrogels with tailored swelling properties. It is envisioned that soluble hyperbranched polymers and crosslinked hydrogels prepared from diacryl-P(DL)LA-PEG(1k)-P(DL)LA macromers can have promising applications in the fields of nano-medicines and regenerative medicines.

Abstract:The multiblock copolymers, which exhibit more complex block composition and sequences than those of di- or tri-block copolymers, have attracted more and more scientific interest and attention in the past years. The ABCBA linear pentablock terpolymer with block number of 5 is a representative model and starting point for investigating the self-assembly of multiblock copolymers, which is helpful for understanding the assembled structures and solution properties of biomacromolecules with complex sequence structures. Compared with AB diblock copolymers and ABC triblock terpolymers, the ABCBA pentablock terpolymers have more intricate morphologies and have better mechanical properties with similar morphologies. This review will mainly focus on ABCBA linear pentablock terpolymers and systematically summary the recent research progress in self-assembly of ABCBA linear pentablock terpolymers in bulk and solution as well as their potential applications in various technical fields including drug carriers, surface coatings, inorganic material templates, battery materials, and polymer gel.

Abstract:A novel amphiphilic ABA type triblock copolymer with well-defined glycopolymer segments was successfully synthesized via the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique, using a bromo-terminated difunctional polysulfone as macroinitiator. The difunctional polysulfone macroinitiator was prepared by esterifying the phenolic end groups of polysulfone to α-haloesters. This macroinitiator was then used to initiate the polymerization of a glucose-carrying monomer, 3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-D-glucofuranose (MAIpG), resulting an ABA type triblock copolymer. After acidolysis treatment, the isopropylidenyl groups of the protected sugar residues were removed, thus the amphiphilic ABA type triblock copolymer with well-defined glycopolymer segments was obtained. The polymers obtained were identified by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, GPC, and TGA. The self-assembly behavior of the amphiphilic glycopolymer in selective solvent (e.g. DMF/H2O) system was also preliminarily explored. The resultant amphiphilic glycopolymer shows potential applications in the fields of controlled release and delivery of drugs, micro-reactors, nano-materials, medical devices, and so on.

Abstract:Owing to the peculiarity of its molecular architecture, dendritic-linear copolymer consisting of Percec type dendron molecules and a relatively stiff poly{2,5-bis[(4'-methoxyphenyl) oxycarbonyl] styrene} (PMPCS) chain could self-assemble into hollow spherical particles in common solvent. This type of self-assembly offers a new convenient route for obtaining hollow vesicles in copolymer systems without secondary bonding. And vesicular structures and microspherical compound micelles can be obtained in selective solvents. Additionally, under moisture-rich conditions, solution-cast films of dendron-b-PMPCS can form well-defined honey-comb patterns.

Abstract:Liquid crystalline diblock copolymers with different molecular weights and low poly-dispersities were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene (MPCS) monomers. The block architecture (coil-conformation of MMA segment and rigid-rod of MPCS segment) of the copolymer was experimentally confirmed by a combination of H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatograph techniques. The liquid crystalline behaviour of the copolymer was studied using differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscope. It was found that the liquid crystalline behaviour was dependent on the number average molecular weight of the rigid segment. Only those copolymers with M-n(GPC) of the rigid block above 9200 g mol(-1) could form liquid crystalline phases higher than the glass transition temperature of the rigid block. The random copolymers MPCS-co-MMA were also synthesized by conventional free radical polymerization. The molar content of MPCS in MPCS-co-MMA had to be higher than 71% to maintain liquid crystalline behaviour. (C) 2003 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:A series of novel block copolymers, PS-b-PPDMA, were synthesized via anionic polymerization. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) spectra and Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images indicated lamella or hexagonal structures with a sub-10 nm half-pitch formed under mild thermal annealing condition. The assembly condition is as quick as 5 min or less at 100 °C thermal annealing. The smallest lamellar D spacing is 11.8 nm. These block copolymers show the potential as DSA material with high intrinsic resolution for sub-10 nm and beyond nodes.

Abstract:Lewis pair polymerization has demonstrated its unique advantages and powerful capability in polymer synthesis. Here we employ strong nucleophilic N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO) and bulky organoaluminum to construct a frustrated Lewis pair, which can realize the compounded sequence control (CSC) copolymerization and self-assembly the mixture of dimethylaminoethyl acrylate and fluoride-functionalized methacrylate into diblock copolymers (di-BCPs) nano-assemblies through polymerization-induced self-assembly in one-pot, single-step manner within minutes. These di-BCPs were characterized by 1 H and 13 C NMR, GPC, DSC, and TEM. By utilizing appropriate solvophilic block and solvophobic block, such Lewis pair polymerization-induced self-assembly strategy enables the expeditious, room-temperature synthesis of di-BCP nanoparticles with different morphologies, including spheres, worms, vesicles, and even fibers, thus suggesting the great application potential of such method in the future.

Abstract:Anionic macroinimer is prepared through selective monoaddition of polyisoprenyllithium (PILi) toward 1,3-bis(1-phenylvinyObenzene (MDDPE) in THF/cyclohexane mixture. The resulting macroinimer, possessing a living anion and a diphenylethylene (DPE) group at the same end of the PI chain, undergoes self-condensing vinyl copolymerization (SCVCP) with styrene after the solvent has been switched from mixture of THF/cyclohexane into pure cyclohexane. Dendritic block copolymers of styrene and isoprene are obtained, in which PI chains are linked to the branch points. The molecular weights of the dendritic products mainly depend on the ratio of monomer to macroinimer, whereas PI chain length has only slight effects. The PI segments are subsequently epoxidized and grafted with PILi or polystyrenyllithium (PSLi) to give dendritic polymer brushes. Both dendritic block copolymers and dendritic polymer brushes show decreased intrinsic viscosities. Dendritic block copolymer of styrene and isoprene undergoes a specially slow process of self assembly, from unimolecular micelles and intermediate compound micelles to large compound micelles, in mixed solvent (n-heptane/THF = 19/1, v/v). In addition, conversion of large compound micelles into lamellar structure is observed for the first time in self-assembly of dendritically branched polymers.

Abstract:A series of helix-coil diblock copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) and optically active helical poly[ {(+)-2,5-bis [4'-((S)-2-methylbutoxy)phenyl] styrene] (PMBPS) were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The synthetic methodology permitted straightforward preparation of the diblock copolymers with relatively low polydispersities and a broad range of compositions and molecular weights. Depending on the composing block length and the initial concentration, the copolymers self-assembled into different supramolecular structures in aqueous solution, including spherical micelles, vesicles, multilamellar vesicles, large compound vesicles, and tubules.

Abstract:A series of well-defined dendritic star-block copolymers were successfully synthesized by combination of living ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with the hydroxyl-terminated dendrimer polyester. Dendritic star-shaped poly(L-lactide)s (PLLAs) were prepared by bulk polymerization of L-lactide (L-LA) with dendrimer polyester initiator and tin 2-ethylhexanoate catalyst. The number-average molecular weight of these polymers linearly increased with the molar ratio of L-LA to dendrimer initiator. Dendritic star-shaped PLLA was converted into a PLLABr macroinitiator with 2-bromopropionyl bromide. Dendritic star-block copolymers could be obtained via ATRP of 2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). The molecular weight distributions of these copolymers were narrow. The molecular weights of dendritic star-shaped polymers and star-block copolymers could be controlled by the molar ratios of monomer to initiator and monomer conversion. The thermal properties of these dendritic star-shaped polymers and star-block copolymers were investigated. The behavior of model drug chlorambucil release from the copolymer indicated that the rate of drug release could be effectively controlled by altering the pH values of the environment. Abstract:We synthesized ABC triblock rigid aromatic-flexible dendritic block molecules consisting of a docosyl chain, rigid aromatic segment, and poly(ethylene oxide) dendrimer. These block molecules were observed to exhibit an ordered structure in the solid state. Small-angle X-ray scattering experiments showed that the rigid-dendritic block molecule based on a more rodlike aromatic unit self-assembles into a 2-D hexagonal columnar structure, whereas the block molecule based on a more wedgelike aromatic unit self-assembles into a 3-D micellar cubic structure. Dynamic light scatterings, scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observations, and UV/vis spectroscopic measurements were carried out to investigate the encapsulation behavior of hydrophobic guests with the block molecules in an aqueous environment. The rigid-dendritic block molecules self-assemble into stable capsulelike micellar aggregates in aqueous solutions in the presence of CHCl3. In addition, the resulting micellar aggregates encapsulate hydrophobic dye molecules within their micellar core. The critical micellar concentration (cmc) values appeared to be very low, as compared to those of conventional surfactants. These results demonstrate that the introduction of a hydrophilic dendritic segment into an extended rigid aromatic segment can lead to a unique self-assembling system that shows aggregation behavior in both solid and dilute solution phases.

Abstract:This work develops an iterative growth approach to synthesize discrete oligo lactic acids with exactly defined stereoconfiguration by connecting enantiomeric monomers (i.e., L- and D-lactic acid) following a predesigned sequence. A library of diblock copolymers with uniform chain length was modularly prepared by conjugating the stereoisomeric blocks with a chemically incompatible chain. The precise chemical structure eliminates all molecular uncertainties associated with statistical distribution and decouples the intertwined variables. A rich collection of ordered structures, including unconventional Frank–Kasper A15 and σ phases, was captured. The stereoconfiguration exerts pronounced impacts on chain conformation, leading to appreciable variations of lattice dimension and phase stability. This study quantitatively assessed the critical contribution of stereoconfiguration on packing behaviors, calling for particular attention to this essential molecular parameter as an effective handle for rational structural engineering.

Abstract:Here, the dendritic chloric poly(benzyl ether) (G1-Cl, G2-Cl and G3-Cl) as the macroinitiator for the controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methylacrylate was investigated. Polymers obtained were characterizated by GPC, 1H NMR, FT-IR, TGA and DSC. These dendritic-linear block polymers that consist of linear and dendritic segments have very good solubility in common organic solvents at room temperature. In a selective solvent (THF/H2O), polymers can self-assembled into the micelles that have a spherical morphology in shape due to the lowest of the surface energies.

Abstract:Poly(benzyl ether)-b-polystyrene dendritic-linear polymers were successfully synthesized using a dendritic chloric poly(benzyl ether) (G(1)-Cl, G(2)-Cl, and G(3)-Cl) as the macroinitiator through the atom transfer radical polymerization process. The structure and properties of the resultant polymers were characterizated by gel permeation chromatography, H-1-NMR, Fourier transform IR, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that the temperature, reaction time, molar ratio of the macromitiator to styrene, and the generation number of the macroinitiator have significant effects on the molecular weights, conversion, and polydispersities of the resulting polymers. These dendritic-linear block polymers had very good solubility in common organic solvents at room temperature. The terminal group (dendritic segments) of the polymers can affect their thermal stability. Abstract:Well-defined poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-polyethylene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) triblock copolymers with saturated and unsaturated PE as the central block (PMMA-b-(u)PE-b-PMMA) were synthesized by combining acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) with thiol-ene click chemistry and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The mass ratios of (u)PE/PMMA in the copolymers are 1:1 and 1:2 respectively, while the molecular weight of the (u)PE block remained constant (22 k). The characterization, thermal properties and crystallization of copolymers were determined by 1H/13C NMR, IR, TGA, DSC and XRD. As a result, the PMMA blocks can form stereocomplex crystal, which was affected by copolymer composition as well as the crystallization of PE middle block. Under solvent vapor annealing (SVA) conditions, amorphous or weak crystallization block copolymers assembled into worm-like network aggregates, while the aggregates evolution to fibrous or banded and fabric-like network covering particles morphology driving by PE nuclear crystallization and PMMA shell crystallization respectively.

Abstract:A poly [(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]-block-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) copolymer (PDMAEMA-b-PCL) bearing a sugar moiety at the PDMAEMA end was synthesized via a sequential anionic polymerization of dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL), followed by a coupling reaction with D-gluconolactone. The structure of the polymer was confirmed by H-1 NMR spectroscopy, IR and gel permeation chromatography. The self-assembly behavior of this polymer in aqueous solution was studied by using dynamic light scattering.

Abstract:The exploration of nanoscale morphologies with three-dimensional spatial arrangements in block copolymers involves the manipulation of compositional fluctuations at interfaces, induction of conformational asymmetry, and design of complex architectures. Despite the abundance of triply periodic minimal surfaces identified to date, the experimental demonstration of thermodynamically stable complex nanostructures with high-packing frustration remains limited. This research update focuses on the importance of molecular interactions for stabilizing complex nanostructures and proposes the use of end-group chemistry as a versatile method for realizing thermodynamically stable network structures with high-packing frustration in simple linear diblock copolymers. The proposed approach substantially alters phase diagrams and reveals unprecedented network structures in block copolymers.
