Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:Since their introduction by G. Grätzer and E. Knapp in 2007, more than four dozen papers have been devoted to finite slim planar semimodular lattices (in short, SPS lattices or slim semimodular lattices) and to some related fields. In addition to distributivity, there have been seven known properties of the congruence lattices of these lattices. The first two properties were proved by G. Grätzer, the next four by the present author, while the seventh was proved jointly by G. Grätzer and the present author. Five out of the seven properties were found and proved by using lamps, which are lattice theoretic tools introduced by the present author in a 2021 paper. Here, using lamps, we present infinitely many new properties. Lamps also allow us to strengthen the seventh previously known property, and they lead to an algorithm of exponential time to decide whether a finite distributive lattice can be represented as the congruence lattice of an SPS lattice. Some new properties of lamps are also given.

Abstract:A planar (upper) semimodular lattice $L$ is slim if the five-element nondistributive modular lattice $M_3$ does not occur among its sublattices. (Planar lattices are finite by definition.) Slim rectangular lattices as particular slim planar semimodular lattices were defined by G. Grätzer and E. Knapp in 2007. In 2009, they also proved that the congruence lattices of slim planar semimodular lattices with at least three elements are the same as those of slim rectangular lattices. In order to provide an effective tool for studying these congruence lattices, we introduce the concept of lamps of slim rectangular lattices and prove several of their properties. Lamps and several tools based on them allow us to prove in a new and easy way that the congruence lattices of slim planar semimodular lattices satisfy the two previously known properties. Also, we use lamps to prove that these congruence lattices satisfy four new properties including the two-pendant four-crown property and the forbidden marriage property.

Jordan-Hölder Theorem with Uniqueness for Semimodular Lattices

Abstract:In 2011 Czédli and Schmidt proved the strongest form of Jordan-Hölder theorem for lattices, which they called Jordan-Hölder theorem with uniqueness: Given two maximal chains in a semimodular lattice of finite height, they both have the same length and there is a unique bijection that takes the prime intervals of the first chain to the prime intervals of the second chain such that the interval and its image are up-and-down projective. The theorem generalizes the classical result that all composition series of a finite group have the same length and isomorphic factors and shows that the isomorphism is in some sense unique. The paper presents a simplified proof of the result.

On slim rectangular lattices

Abstract:Let $L$ be a slim, planar, semimodular lattice (slim means that it does not contain an ${\mathsf M}_3$-sublattice). We call the interval $I = [o, i]$ of $L$ \emph{rectangular}, if there are complementary $a, b \in I$ such that $a$ is to the left of $b$. We claim that a rectangular interval of a slim rectangular lattice is also a slim rectangular lattice. We will present some applications, including a recent result of G. Czédli. In a paper with E. Knapp about a dozen years ago, we introduced natural diagrams} for slim rectangular lattices. Five years later, G. Czédli introduced ${\E C}_1$-diagrams} We prove that they are the same.

We prove that there exists a positive constant C such that, up to similarity, the number of planar diagrams of these lattices of size n is asymptotically C times 2 to the n.

Abstract:In this short note, we provide an alternative proof of a notable theorem by Narasimhan and Ramanan. The theorem states that the moduli space of $S$-equivalence classes of semistable rank $2$ vector bundles over a curve $X$ of genus $2$ with trivial determinant is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^3$. Our proof relies on a criterion by Bauer and Szemberg, which characterizes projective spaces among smooth Fano varieties using Seshadri constants.

Structural properties of the lattice cohomology of curve singularities

Abstract:The lattice cohomology of a reduced curve singularity is a bigraded ${\mathbb Z}[U]$-module ${\mathbb H}^*=\oplus_{q,n}{\mathbb H}^q_{2n}$, that categorifies the $\delta$-invariant and extract key geometric information from the semigroup of values. In the present paper we prove three structure theorems for this new invariant: (a) the weight-grading of the reduced cohomology is (just as in the case of the topological lattice cohomology of normal surface singularities) nonpositive; (b) the graded ${\mathbb Z}[U]$-module structure of ${\mathbb H}^0$ determines whether or not a given curve is Gorenstein; and finally (c) the lattice cohomology module ${\mathbb H}^0$ of any plane curve singularity determines its multiplicity.

Abstract:For many equation-theoretical questions about modular lattices, Hall and Dilworth give a useful construction: Let $L_0$ be a lattice with largest element $u_0$, $L_1$ be a lattice disjoint from $L_0$ with smallest element $v_1$, and $a \in L_0$, $b \in L_1$ such that the intervals $[a, u_0]$ and $[v_1, b]$ are isomorphic. Then, after identifying those intervals you obtain $L_0 \cup L_1$, a lattice structure whose partial order is the transitive relation generated by the partial orders of $L_0$ and $L_1$. It is modular if $L_0$ and $L_1$ are modular. Since in this construction the index set $\{0, 1\}$ is essentially a chain, this work presents a method -- termed S-glued -- whereby a general family $L_x\ (x \in S)$ of lattices can specify a lattice with the small-scale lattice structure determined by the $L_x$ and the large-scale structure determined by $S$. A crucial application is representing finite-length modular lattices using projective geometries.

Part A is in fairly final form and mainly features known material, exceptions being a short proof of the distributivity of congruence lattices of lattices, as well as the concept of a point-splitting (which applies to arbitrary partial linear spaces). The planned content of Parts B,C,D is given in the introduction of Part A. An open problem on congruences of finite lattices

Abstract:Let $L$ be a planar semimodular lattice. We call $L$ \emph{slim}, if it has no $\mthree$ sublattice. Let us define an \emph{SPS lattice} as a slim, planar, semimodular lattice $L$. In 2016, I proved a property of congruences of SPS lattices (Two-cover Property) and raised the problem of characterizing them. Since then, more than 50 papers have been published contributing to this problem. In this survey, I provide an overview of this field with major contributions by Gábor Czédli.

Abstract:In this paper, we study semiconic idempotent commutative residuated lattices. After giving some properties of such residuated lattices, we obtain a structure theorem for semiconic idempotent commutative residuated lattices. As an application, we make use of the structure theorem to prove that the variety of strongly semiconic idempotent commutative residuated lattices has the amalgamation property.

Abstract:In this short note, we give a new proof of a recent result of Tong Liu on torsions in the graded pieces of a Nygaard filtration associated to a crystalline lattice. Our approach is inspired on the one hand by a result of Gee--Kisin on the shape of mod $p$ crystalline Breuil--Kisin modules, and on the other hand by a connection between the Deligne--Illusie theorem and the Sen operator on the diffracted Hodge complex, as observed by Drinfeld and Bhatt--Lurie.

Non-left-orderability of lattices in higher-rank semisimple Lie groups (after Deroin and Hurtado)

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected, semisimple, real Lie group with finite centre, with real rank at least two. B.Deroin and S.Hurtado recently proved the 30-year-old conjecture that no irreducible lattice in $G$ has a left-invariant total order. (Equivalently, they proved that no such lattice has a nontrivial, orientation-preserving action on the real line.) We will explain many of the main ideas of the proof, by using them to prove the analogous result for lattices in $p$-adic semisimple groups. The $p$-adic case is easier, because some of the technical issues do not arise.

Abstract:It is shown that any finite, rank-connected, dismantlable lattice is lexicographically shellable (hence Cohen-Macaulay). A ranked, interval-connected lattice is shown to be rank-connected, but a rank-connected lattice need not be interval-connected. An example of a planar, rank-connected lattice that is not admissible is given.

Abstract:Patch lattices, introduced by G. Czédli and E.T. Schmidt in 2013, are the building stones for slim (and so necessarily finite and planar) semimodular lattices with respect to gluing. Slim semimodular lattices were introduced by G. Grätzer and E. Knapp in 2007, and they have been intensively studied since then. Outside lattice theory, these lattices played the main role in adding a uniqueness part to the classical Jordan--Hölder theorem for groups by G. Czédli and E.T. Schmidt in 2011, and they also led to results in combinatorial geometry. In this paper, we prove that slim patch lattices are exactly the absolute retracts with more than two elements for the category of slim semimodular lattices with length-preserving lattice embeddings as morphisms. Also, slim patch lattices are the same as the maximal objects $L$ in this category such that $|L|>2$. Furthermore, slim patch lattices are characterized as the algebraically closed lattices $L$ in this category such that $|L|>2$. Finally, we prove that if we consider $\{0,1\}$-preserving lattice homomorphisms rather than length-preserving ones, then the absolute retracts for the class of slim semimodular lattices are the at most 4-element boolean lattices.

Reducing the lengths of slim planar semimodular lattices without changing their congruence lattices

Abstract:Following G. Grätzer and E. Knapp (2007), a slim semimodular lattice, SPS lattice for short, is a finite planar semimodular lattice having no $M_3$ as a sublattice. An SPS lattice is a slim rectangular lattice if it has exactly two doubly irreducible elements and these two elements are complements of each other. A finite poset $P$ is said to be JConSPS-representable if there is an SPS lattice $L$ such that $P$ is isomorphic to the poset J(Con $L$) of join-irreducible congruences of $L$. We prove that if $1<n\in N$ and $P$ is an $n$-element JConSPS-representable poset, then there exists a slim rectangular lattice $L$ such that J(Con $L$) is isomorphic to $P$, the length of $L$ is at most $2n^2$, and $|L|\leq 4n^4$. This offers an algorithm to decide whether a finite poset $P$ is JConSPS-representable (or a finite distributive lattice is ``ConSPS-representable"). This algorithm is slow as G. Czédli, T. Dékány, G. Gyenizse, and J. Kulin proved in 2016 that there are asymptotically $(k-2)!\cdot e^2/2$ many slim rectangular lattices of a given length $k$, where $e$ is the famous constant $\approx 2.71828$. The known properties and constructions of JConSPS-representable posets can accelerate the algorithm; we present a new construction.

Abstract:We show that a compact representation of a semisimple Lie group has an orthogonal decomposition into finite length representations. This generalises and simplifies a number of more special spectral theorems in the literature. We apply it to the case of cusp forms, thus settling the spectral theory for the space of non-unitary twisted cusp forms.

Abstract:The slope filtration of Euclidean lattices was introduced in works by Stuhler in the late 1970s, extended by Grayson a few years later, as a new tool for reduction theory and its applications to the study of arithmetic groups. Lattices with trivial filtration are called semistable, in keeping with a classical terminology. In 1997, Bost conjectured that the tensor product of semistable lattices should be semistable itself. Our aim in this work is to study these questions for the restricted class of isodual lattices. Such lattices appear in a wide range of contexts, and it is rather natural to study their slope filtration. We exhibit specific properties in this case, which allow, in turn, to prove some new particular cases of Bost's conjecture.
