Abstract:Background: Subdural empyema is one of the more serious complications of bacterial meningitis and therapeutic challenges to clinicians. We aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics, treatment, and outcome of subdural empyema in neonates with bacterial meningitis. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in two medical centers in Taiwan that enrolled all cases of neonates with subdural empyema after bacterial meningitis between 2003 and 2020. Results: Subdural empyema was diagnosed in 27 of 153 (17.6%) neonates with acute bacterial meningitis compared with cases of meningitis without subdural empyema. The demographics and pathogen distributions were comparable between the study group and the controls, but neonates with subdural empyema were significantly more likely to have clinical manifestations of fever (85.2%) and seizure (81.5%) (both p values < 0.05). The cerebrospinal fluid results of neonates with subdural empyema showed significantly higher white blood cell counts, lower glucose levels and higher protein levels (p = 0.011, 0.003 and 0.006, respectively). Neonates with subdural empyema had a significantly higher rate of neurological complications, especially subdural effusions and periventricular leukomalacia. Although the final mortality rate was not increased in neonates with subdural empyema when compared with the controls, they were often treated much longer and had a high rate of long-term neurological sequelae. Conclusions: Subdural empyema is not uncommon in neonates with acute bacterial meningitis and was associated with a high risk of neurological complications, although it does not significantly increase the final mortality rate. Close monitoring of the occurrence of subdural empyema is required, and appropriate long-term antibiotic treatment after surgical intervention may lead to optimized outcomes.
Traumatic subacute subdural effusion in the posterior fossa associated with secondary acute hydrocephalus in a neonate. Case report

Abstract:The authors report on a neonatal patient with traumatic subacute subdural effusion in the posterior fossa associated with secondary acute hydrocephalus. The infant fell from his mother's hand onto the floor, injuring his left parietal region. Computed tomography (CT) scans of the patient's head revealed a linear fracture of the left parietal bone, a small contusion in the right temporal lobe, and a small subdural hematoma in the right posterior fossa with thin subdural effusion. Serial CT scans revealed a progressive increase in subdural effusion bilaterally in the posterior fossa. On Day 7 the anterior fontanelle was tense and CT scans revealed marked hydrocephalus associated with thick subdural effusion in the posterior fossa. External drainage of both the subdural effusion and dilated lateral ventricles improved the patient's condition, and no reaccumulation of subdural effusion has been observed. The origin and treatment of this rare clinical entity is discussed.
Subdural Empyema as a Sequela of Severe Erosive Sinusitis: A Case Report

Abstract:Intracranial subdural empyema is a rare but critical neurosurgical emergency marked by pus accumulation between the brain and the dura mater. It typically arises from bacterial or fungal infections, often secondary to sinusitis, otitis media, or head trauma. Symptoms can range from mild headaches to significant neurological deficits and altered mental status. Diagnosis is confirmed through advanced imaging techniques such as MRI and CT scans. Timely intervention is essential to prevent neurological damage and systemic complications, usually involving surgical drainage and antimicrobial therapy. We present the case of a 45-year-old male who visited the emergency room several times with progressive lethargy and altered mental status. He was admitted and later transferred to our trauma center for a suspected subdural hematoma. An emergent right-sided craniotomy was performed, and a subdural empyema was found. The patient improved following subdural drainage and antibiotic treatment, including 600 mg linezolid every 12 hours, 2 g cefepime every eight hours, and 500 mg metronidazole every eight hours. This case highlights the effectiveness of prompt medical and surgical intervention in managing this rare condition and offers valuable insights for improving future patient outcomes.
[Study on Clinical Significance of Fetal Posterior Fossa Fluid].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To discuss the clinical significance of accumulated fluid in fetal posterior fossa.METHODS:Prenatal ultrasonography examination was performed on 5 400 woman at more than 20 weeks gestation, 110 women with fetus accumulated fluid in the posterior fossa more than 5mm were included in this study. The changes of accumulated fluid in fetal posterior fossa and the associated intracranial and extracranial anomalies were observed regularly every 2 or 3 weeks until delivery. The infants were also followed up.RESULTS:The incidence of the fetal posterior fossa fluid was 2.0%. Generally, the accumulated fluid in fetal posterior fossa was diagnosed at first time at 22 approximately 41 gestation weeks, median was (31 +/- 4) weeks. Most of them were be found between 29 approximately 32 weeks (42 cases, 38.2%), and the maximum amount of accumulated fluid in fetal posterior fossa was also in 29 approximately 32 gestation weeks (39 cases, 35.5%). The amount of accumulated fluid was from 6 mm to 26 mm, mean (11 +/- 3) mm, mostly between 10 approximately 14 mm (79 cases, 71.8%). The incidence of defected infants was 4.0%, 7.6% and 83.3% respectively, when the posterior fossa fluid was less than 10 mm, 10 approximately 14 mm and more than 15 mm.CONCLUSION:Most of cases could be diagnosed between 29 approximately 32 weeks gestation. The more fluid in the posterior fossa found, the more defected fetal or infant would be observed. In cases of more than 10 mm, especially more than 15 mm, anomales should be observed carefully.
Posterior fossa hemorrhages in the newborn

Abstract:Of 700 neonates examined by computed tomography (CT) in a 4 years period, 17 were found to have a posterior fossa hemorrhage. Eleven were born at term, and six were premature. Delivery was traumatic in 12 babies. The hematoma was in the subdural space in nine and within the cerebellum in eight. The CT diagnosis of extravasated blood in the posterior fossa is easy both in full-term neonates and prematures. The localization of the hematoma, however, may be difficult. While in the full-term neonates differentiation between subdural and intracerebellar location is relatively easy, in the premature the cerebellar hematoma frequently has a crescentic shape that resembles a subdural collection. Four patients with a subdural hematoma and four with a cerebellar hematoma were operated on. The general prognosis is poor: seven patients died; of the survivors, only three are normal at follow-up.

Abstract:This paper reported a case of traumatic progressive bilateral epidural hematomas of posterior cranial fossa.The progressive bilateral hematomas which caused obstructive hydrocephalus were confirmed on second CT scanning 14 h after injury,which occurred in the impact location where only occipital linear fracture and thin epidural hematoma were seen on the initial CT scanning 1 h after injury.However,the patient only complained headache,and no abnormal neurological sign was found.The hydrocephalus disappeared after emergent evacuation of hematomas by occipital para-midline approach,and the patient had favourable recovery.On basis of literature review,some issues about this case were discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Posterior fossa anomalies are less common in prenatal diagnosis than midline anomalies or ventricular dilatations. However, they constitute an important entity, combining neurological disorders as well as normal variants that should be recognized in prenatal diagnosis because of the genetic implications and neurodevelopmental outcome of some of these conditions. Here we present some of the main imaging features enabling prenatal diagnosis of posterior fossa anomalies in a context of constantly evolving classifications, resulting from advances in genetics and neuroimaging.

Abstract:Background: Subdural empyema is an extremely rare and fatal intracranial complication of chronic otitis media. Due to its rarity and vague symptoms, it is often diagnosed late if not completely missed; specially in developing countries where the diagnostic modalities are hardly available or accessible. To the best knowledge of the authors, this is a preliminary reported case of subdural empyema as a complication of chronic otitis media in Eritrea. It aims to provide vital information on the clinical presentation, preferred diagnostic modalities, and the proper management of such cases. Case report: An 8 years old female patient from the Rashaida ethnic group presented with fever, right ear purulent discharge, right post-auricular swelling, and altered mental status. Prior to her admission, she had history of recurrent purulent discharge from her right ear for almost 2 years, and had been diagnosed with chronic otitis media. Upon admission her GCS was 13/15 which later on deteriorated to be 3/15 on day 3. MRI was done and showed a right fronto-tempo-parietal subdural empyema with mass effect, shifting the midline to the left. She was immediately started on empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics. After the diagnosis was made, craniotomy was done, and 30 ml of pus was removed from the subdural space. Culture and sensitivity of the pus obtained intraoperatively was done but produced no yield. Hence, she was continued on the empirically started antibiotics. The patient's condition was well improved by post-operative day 4. Conclusion: It is important to have a high index of suspicion of intracranial complications in patients with history of chronic otitis media or other otologic complaints, who present with neurologic manifestations. Subdural empyema still being uncommon even among the intracranial complications of COM, it is often missed. Hence, timely diagnosis with MRI, immediate surgical evacuation of the empyema along with the prolonged administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics is highly recommended.
Retrospective analysis of brain abscess in 183 patients: A 10-year survey.

Abstract:This study aims to identify predictive factors related to clinical outcome, reoperation, and complications in patients with brain abscess.Patients with a diagnosis of brain abscess at discharge at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine between 2008 and 2018 were reviewed. Logistic regression was used to identify predictive factors associated with Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) at discharge, GOS at 1 year after discharge, reoperation and complications.Among 183 patients enrolled into the study, 142 patients had a good outcome at discharge (GOS ≥ 4) and 41 had a poor outcome (GOS ≤ 3). During the follow-up period, 20 additional patients had a good outcome. A total of 156 patients were treated by open craniotomy excision (n = 72) and aspiration (n = 84), 10 of whom underwent reoperation. Complications in surgical patients for brain abscess occurred in 54 patients. Poor outcome was related to Glasgow coma scale (P = .007) and ventricular proximity (P = .001). Surgical method was associated with reoperation (P = .04) and complications (P < .001). Seizure at admission was related to epilepsy (P < .001). Surgical method was related to postoperative intracranial hemorrhage (P = .02).Glasgow coma scale (GCS) and ventricular proximity were associated with poor outcome. Further, patients who underwent aspiration were more likely to experience reoperation, while open craniotomy excision (OCE) was related to complications. Patients presenting seizure at admission were more likely to develop epilepsy. Patients who underwent OCE tended to experience postoperative intracranial hemorrhage.

Abstract:Bacterial meningoencephalitis in newborns is a severe and life-threatening pathology, which results from meningeal infection and the subsequent involvement of the brain parenchyma. The severity of the acute onset of symptoms and the risk of neurodevelopmental adverse sequelae in children strongly depend on the timing of the infection, the immunological protection transmitted by the mother to the fetus during pregnancy, and the neonate's inflammatory and immune system response after birth. Although the incidence of neonatal meningitis and meningoencephalitis and related mortality declined in the past twenty years with the improvement of prenatal care and with the introduction of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis against Streptococcus beta Hemolyticus group B (Streptococcus Agalactiae) in the 1990s, bacterial meningitis remains the most common form of cerebrospinal fluid infection in pediatric patients. To date, the rate of unfavorable neurological outcomes is still from 20% to 60%, and the possibility of containing its rate strongly depends on early diagnosis, therapy, and a multidisciplinary approach, which involves neonatologists, neurologists, neuroradiologists, and physiotherapists. Neonatal meningitis remains difficult to diagnose because the responsible bacteria vary with gestational age at birth, age at presentation, and environmental context. The clinical presentation, especially in the newborn, is very ambiguous. From a clinical point of view, the definitive test for diagnosis is lumbar puncture in patients with symptoms suggestive of neurological involvement. Therefore, neuroimaging is key for raising clinical suspicion of meningitis or corroborating the diagnosis based on clinical and laboratory data. Our pictorial review offers a practical approach to neonatal meningoencephalitis by describing the epidemiology, the pathophysiology of bacterial meningoencephalitis, defining the indications and suggesting optimized protocols for neuroimaging techniques, and showing the main neuroimaging findings to reach the diagnosis and offering proper follow-up of bacterial meningitis. Moreover, we tried identifying some peculiar MRI patterns related to some bacteria.

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the imaging features of neonatal congenital nasal obstructive disease.Methods:30 cases of CT findings and 3 cases of MRI findings(including 12 male and 21 female)of neonatal congenital nasal obstruction were retrospective analyzed.Results:In 14 cases with choanal atresia or stenosis,CT demonstrated inward bowing of the posterior maxilla,thickening of the vomer,narrowing or fusion of the posterior choanae with soft-tissue septum.In 9 cases with dacryocystocele,CT demonstrated nasolacrimal duct dilatation,extending to medial canthus and nasal cavity.In 7 cases with pyriform aperture stenosis,CT demonstrated inward bowing of the maxillary spines,narrowing of pyriform aperture and anterior nasal canal with a triangular hard palate.In 1 cases of nasal encephalocele,MRI demonstrated a cystic mass in the left nasal cavity connected to the subarachnoid space.In 2 cases of infantile hemangioma of nasal cavity,MRI demonstrated enhanced soft tissue mass in the nasal cavity.Conclusion:The cause of neonatal nasal obstructive disease varies widely,imaging examination is helpful to accurate diagnosis and timely treatment.
Group B Streptococcus Brain Abscess in a Neonate with Bilateral Otorrhea

Abstract:Introduction Group B streptococcus (GBS) is the leading cause of bacterial sepsis and meningitis in neonates worldwide, but brain abscess secondary to GBS is extremely rare. While temporal brain abscesses have been described as a sequelae of otogenic infections in children and adults, such a presentation has not been described in neonates. Case Description An 8-day-old female infant presented with a fever and irritability along with bilateral purulent otorrhea. Maternal GBS screening was negative, but the delivery was complicated by chorioamnionitis. Workup revealed neutrophilic pleocytosis in the cerebrospinal fluid and culture of the ear drainage was positive for GBS. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a circular lesion with rim enhancement within the left temporal lobe concerning for an abscess. The infant was treated with 14 days of intravenous vancomycin, cefepime, and metronidazole followed by 10 weeks of intravenous ampicillin. The hospital course was complicated by seizures and obstructive hydrocephalus requiring multiple neurosurgical interventions. Conclusion Brain abscess can occur as a sequela of GBS meningitis in neonates, but they are rare. Otogenic infections require prompt evaluation and treatment as they can progress to serious central nervous infections in neonates.
Prognostic value of cranial ultrasound findings in infants aged <90 days with bacterial meningitis: a single-centre retrospective cohort study

Abstract:Background: Bacterial meningitis (BM) poses a serious threat to infant health. We assessed cranial ultrasound (CUS) changes in infants with BM as possible predictors of the neurological sequelae of BM. Methods: We retrospectively assigned 132 infants diagnosed with BM from 2007 to 2021. Neuroimaging characteristics and cerebral blood flow (CBF) profiles identified using CUS were analysed and compared between the groups during the acute and postacute phases of BM. Results: Overall, 102 infants with CUS and outcome data were recruited. 37/102 (36.3%) infants with neurological developmental impairments comprised the group with sequelae. Abnormal CUS findings increased the risk of sequelae during the postacute phase compared with the acute phase of BM. Prolonged white matter hyperechogenicity was an independent risk factor for sequelae. The CBF profiles of the group with sequelae showed that anterior cerebral artery resistance and pulsatility indices decreased during the acute phase, whereas the mean flow velocity of the middle cerebral artery significantly increased during the postacute phase. Changes in the CBF profiles did not significantly differ in the group without sequelae. Conclusions: Serial CUS can facilitate the prognostic assessment of infants aged <90 days with BM. Prolonged white matter hyperechogenicity, brain volume loss and cerebral perfusion disorders contribute to the risk of sequelae.
Posterior fossa subdural hematoma in a neonate with cleidocranial dysostosis after a spontaneous vaginal delivery: a case report

Abstract:Background: Cleidocranial dysostosis (CCD) is an anomaly characterized by delayed closure of the cranial sutures, midface hypoplasia, moderately short stature, hypoplastic or aplastic clavicles, dental abnormalities, and other complications. Case presentation: We report a case of posterior fossa subdural hematoma (PFSDH) after vaginal delivery in a neonate with CCD, which presented with several clinical symptoms such as apnea, vomiting, and bradycardia. Our patient, who had a family history of CCD, developed apnea and vomiting shortly after birth; PFSDH was detected by head computed tomography, and the patient recovered well following standard medical treatment. Conclusion: The prognosis of intracranial hemorrhage in neonates with CCD is generally poor. In neonates, PFSDH occurs by the following mechanism: the distortion of the infant's cranium during delivery, by the strong force, causes elongation of the falx and angulation of the tentorium that leads to tears in the posterior fossa venous structures, which then cause bleeding into the subdural space. In CCD, the forces occurring during vaginal delivery may causeexcessive distortion of the fragile skull. An awareness of CCD is hence important to avoid vaginal delivery in prenatally diagnosed CCD cases with a family history of CCD.
Persistent hydrocephalus following posterior fossa tuberculoma removal in pediatrics: A case report from a referral center in Indonesia

Abstract:Introduction: The threat posed by tuberculosis persists in developing countries. Individuals under the age of five were more likely to develop central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis. CNS Tuberculoma of the posterior fossa has rarely been reported, and its consequences are more devastating due to the limited space of the posterior fossa. Case presentation: A 4-year old male was referred to our academic general hospital with main complaint of decreased consciousness for the last 3 days. The patient has experienced a low-grade fever, cough, and an enlarging neck tumor for two months. Any contact with confirmed tuberculosis patients was denied by the family. A suspected cerebellar abscess and obstructive hydrocephalus led to the patient's referral. Urgent evacuation of the posterior fossa mass was conducted, revealing a histopathological diagnosis of tuberculoma. After the procedure, the patient experienced seizures and no improvement of GCS. A head CT scan evaluation revealed a communicating hydrocephalus. A ventriculoperitoneal shunt is done, resulting in improvement of the patient's consciousness after CSF diversion. Discussion: The haematogenous spread of Mycobacterium, which causes granulomatous foci in the brain, is the cause of CNS tuberculoma. The neuroradiological characteristic of tuberculomas may mimic several conditions. Thorough history-taking and physical examination may lead to a focused differential diagnosis of the patient. Evacuated posterior fossa tuberculoma usually leads to resolved obstructing hydrocephalus. A persistent hydrocephalus leads to the possibility of communicating hydrocephalus due to tuberculous meningoencephalitis. Close monitoring following excision of posterior fossa tuberculoma may help identify persistent hydrocephalus early on. Conclusion: CNS tuberculoma should remain a differential diagnosis of ring-enhancing posterior fossa mass, especially in pediatrics. This condition may present concomitantly with tuberculous meningoencephalitis, and it may be presented as a persistent hydrocephalus following the surgical removal of the lesion.

Abstract:Abstract Posterior fossa tumors are commonly encountered in pediatric age group patients. Most of these tumors present with features of hydrocephalus in the child. Conventionally, these cases are managed by suboccipital craniotomy with decompression of the tumor mass to establish the free flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) across fourth ventricle and aqueduct of Sylvius. Following resection of posterior fossa tumor, appearance of subdural hygroma is a rare phenomenon. Though few cases of subdural hygroma are reported in literature following foramen magnum decompression in Chiari's malformation, their appearance following posterior fossa tumor resection is alien to medical literature and limited to only two case reports. Here the authors present a patient with periencephalic subdural panhygroma (PSP) following posterior fossa tumor resection who was successfully treated with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) to accomplish a symptomatic and radiologic remission.
Posterior Fossa Abscesses Secondary to Dermal Sinus Associated with Dermoid Cyst in Children.

Abstract:We report on the rare disease of posterior fossa abscesses secondary to dermal sinus associated with dermoid cyst in 4 pediatric cases seen over a 15-year of period. All children had a small dimple or a pinhole on the skin of the occipital region. On admission they had the signs of increased intracranial pressure, while 3 of them still suffered from signs of meningitis resulting from a bacterial infection through the dermal sinus. CT scan and MR images revealed both the route of the dermal sinus and intracranial lesions. Total resection was successfully achieved before various treatments in all patients without nervous sequelae. In conclusion, a posterior fossa dermoid cyst should be considered in all children with an occipital dermal sinus. Cerebellar abscesses will arise once bacterial infection has occurred through the associated dermal sinus. Radiological studies such as CT scans and MR images can help confirm the diagnosis and locate the lesions. Early neurosurgical interventions including external ventricular drainage, external abscess drainage and primary removal should be planned as soon as possible in accord with the children's condition.

Abstract:Objective:Explore the clinical value of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of spina bifida in the pos-terior cranial fossa by exploring the ultrasonographic characteristics of the posterior cranial fossa.Methods:200 cases of normal fetus and open spina bifida fetus were selected as the research object,and the posterior fossa structure was used to screen the patients in 6 cases.Results:The normal fetus fetal head and arm length was significantly greater than that of open spina bifida fetus group(P<0.05);transparent layer group was significantly lower than that of normal fetal nuchal open spina bifida fetus group(P<0.05);open spina bifida patients with ultrasound image was not clear,figure 8 the midbrain and thalamus had different degrees of distortion or deformation,aqueduct disap-peared.The cerebral peduncle and lateral border of the thalamus near parallel tangent.Conclusion:The ultrasonic examination of the posterior cranial fossa in pregnancy can effectively screen the open spina bifida,which has high clinical value.

Abstract:Objectives: Posterior fossa ependymoma group A (EPN_PFA) and group B (EPN_PFB) can be distinguished by their DNA methylation and give rise to different prognoses. We compared the MRI characteristics of EPN_PFA and EPN_PFB at presentation. Methods: Preoperative imaging of 68 patients with posterior fossa ependymoma from two centers was reviewed by three independent readers, blinded for histomolecular grouping. Location, tumor extension, tumor volume, hydrocephalus, calcifications, tissue component, enhancement or diffusion signal, and histopathological data (cellular density, calcifications, necrosis, mitoses, vascularization, and microvascular proliferation) were compared between the groups. Categorical data were compared between groups using Fisher's exact tests, and quantitative data using Mann-Whitney tests. We performed a Benjamini-Hochberg correction of the p values to account for multiple tests. Results: Fifty-six patients were categorized as EPN_PFA and 12 as EPN_PFB, with median ages of 2 and 20 years, respectively (p = 0.0008). The median EPN_PFA tumoral volume was larger (57 vs 29 cm3, p = 0.003), with more pronounced hydrocephalus (p = 0.002). EPN_PFA showed an exclusive central position within the 4th ventricle in 61% of patients vs 92% for EPN_PFB (p = 0.01). Intratumor calcifications were found in 93% of EPN_PFA vs 40% of EPN_PFB (p = 0.001). Invasion of the posterior fossa foramina was mostly found for EPN_PFA, particularly the foramina of Luschka (p = 0.0008). EPN_PFA showed whole and homogeneous tumor enhancement in 5% vs 75% of EPN_PFB (p = 0.0008). All mainly cystic tumors were EPN_PFB (p = 0.002). The minimal and maximal relative ADC was slightly lower in EPN_PFA (p = 0.02 and p = 0.01, respectively). Conclusion: Morphological characteristics from imaging differ between posterior fossa ependymoma subtypes and may help to distinguish them preoperatively. Clinical relevance statement: This study provides a tool to differentiate between group A and group B ependymomas, which will ultimately allow the therapeutic strategy to be adapted in the early stages of patient management. Key points: • Posterior fossa ependymoma subtypes often have different imaging characteristics. • Posterior fossa ependymomas group A are commonly median or lateral tissular calcified masses, with incomplete enhancement, affecting young children and responsible for pronounced hydrocephalus and invasion of the posterior fossa foramina. • Posterior fossa ependymomas group B are commonly median non-calcified masses of adolescents and adults, predominantly cystic, and minimally invasive, with total and homogeneous enhancement.
Risk Factors for Hydrocephalus in Neonatal Purulent Meningitis: A Single-Center Retrospective Analysis

Abstract:Objective: Hydrocephalus is a potentially lethal complication of neonatal purulent meningitis. Early detection of hydrocephalus helps to determine optimal treatment, improve prognosis, and reduce financial burden. We aimed to analyze the risk factors for hydrocephalus in neonates with purulent meningitis and discuss the characteristics of the disease. Methods: The records of neonatal purulent meningitis admitted to the Children Hospital of Fudan University from January 2013 to September 2019 were retrospectively included in the study cohort. The data of clinical, laboratory, and cranial magnetic resonance images (MRIs) were collected and analyzed (except discharge data) by univariate analysis, and P values <.05 were further analyzed by multivariate logistic regression. Results: A total of 197 children who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study cohort. Overall, 39.6% (78/197) of the patients had positive pathogen cultures, and 60.4% (119/197) of patients had clinical diagnosis of meningitis with negative pathogen cultures. Among 197 children, 67 of them experienced hydrocephalus, and the factors that were significantly associated with hydrocephalus in multivariate analysis were female sex, cerebrospinal fluid glucose <2 mmol/L, periventricular leukomalacia, punctate white matter lesions, and pyogenic intraventricular empyema. Children with hydrocephalus had a lower cure rate of meningitis (31.3% vs 75.4%), and poor discharge outcomes. In addition, they had longer length of hospital stay and higher hospital cost. Conclusions: Female sex, cerebrospinal fluid glucose <2 mmol/L, periventricular leukomalacia, punctate white matter lesions, and pyogenic intraventricular empyema were identified as risk factors for hydrocephalus in neonatal purulent meningitis. Children with hydrocephalus had poor discharge outcomes and increased financial burden on their families.
