Abstract:We theoretically examine the spatiotemporal evolution of enhanced near-field optical chirality (OC) in both plasmonic and dielectric nanospheres when excited by ultrashort optical pulses. We demonstrate distinct spatiotemporal variations in near-field OC arising from the differing natures of plasmonic and dielectric resonators. The electric dipole resonant plasmonic nanosphere generates instantaneous near-field OC that relies on the interference between incident and scattered (induced) fields. Conversely, a resonant dielectric nanosphere sustains long-lasting OC even after the incident field diminishes due to the scattered field from resonant electric and magnetic dipole modes. We further demonstrate the control over the near-field OC using vector beams. Our work opens up opportunities for spatiotemporal control of nanostructure-enhanced chiral-light matter interactions.

Abstract:We demonstrate strong chiral optical response in three-dimensional chiral nanoparticle oligomers in the wavelength regime between 700 and 3500 nm. We show in experiment and simulation that this broad-band response occurs at the onset of charge transfer between the individual nanoparticles. The ohmic contact causes a strong red shift of the fundamental mode, while the geometrical shape of the resulting fused particles still allows for an efficient excitation of higher order modes. Calculated spectra and field distributions confirm our interpretation and show a number of interacting plasmonic modes. Our results deepen the understanding of the chiral optical response in complex chiral plasmonic nanostructures and pave the road toward broad-band chiral optical devices with strong responses, for example, for chiral plasmon rulers or sensing applications.

Abstract:The plasmonic chiroptical effect has been used to manipulate chiral states of light, where the strong field enhancement and light localization in metallic nanostructures can amplify the chiroptical response. Moreover, in metamaterials, the chiroptical effect leads to circular dichroism (CD), circular birefringence (CB), and asymmetric transmission. Potential applications enabled by chiral plasmonics have been realized in various areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology. In this review, both basic theories and state‐of‐the‐art studies on plasmonic chiroptical effects are summarized. Molecular chiroptical effects are drastically enhanced by metallic nanostructures that can generate a “superchiral” field, which arises from the strong electromagnetic interactions. Both intrinsic and extrinsic plasmonic chiral metamaterials formed by the periodic arrangement of metallic nanostructured units show high levels of CB, CD, and asymmetric transmission. Consequent applications including photo detection, molecular sensing, and chirality tuning are discussed, and a perspective of emerging concepts such as Pancharatnam−Berry (PB) phase in this booming research field is presented. This review focuses on plasmonic chiral nanostructures and their applications. The basic definition and physical origins of optical chirality are reviewed, the corresponding promising plasmonic applications are highlighted, including optical force, chiral detecting, and chirality tuning. The future development and perspective of chiral emerging concepts such as Pancharatnam−Berry (PB) phase are also presented.

Abstract:Plasmonic chirality represents significant potential for novel nanooptical devices due to its association with strong chiroptical responses. Previous reports on plasmonic chirality mechanism mainly focus on phase retardation and coupling. In this paper, we propose a model similar to the chiral molecules for explaining the intrinsic plasmonic chirality mechanism of varies 3D chiral structures quantitatively based on the interplay and mixing of electric and magnetic dipole modes (directly from electromagnetic field numerical simulations), which forms mixed electric and magnetic polarizability.

Abstract:Metamaterials exhibiting orders-of-magnitude en-hanced artificial chiroptical response than natural counterparts have been intensely investigated. The underlying principle of these chiral responses heavily hinges on an elaborate nanostructure fabrication to generate either intrinsic geometry chirality or handedness-dependent mode interference. Here, we unveil that localized spontaneous chiroptical response can be leveraged by plasmonic nanoaggregates with a disordered coupling effect. The near-field coupling among disordered individual gold nanoparticles leads to localized hot spots that are sensitive to the handedness of light. As a consequence, the nearby nanoparticles showcase near-unity circular dichroism in linear absorption to left-and right-circularly polarized light. It directly leads to a subsequent selective photothermal deformation of plasmonic nanoparticles, which produces prominent nonlinear circular dichroism in two-photon fluorescence by circular polarization beams. Such localized spontaneous chirality is then experimentally evidenced by nanoscale multiplexing watermarks in polychromatic beams with left-and right-circular polarizations. Our results might open a new strategy to tailor the chiroptical response in disordered photonic systems and facilitate the study of chiral light-matter interactions at the deep-subwavelength regime.
Near-field Switching and Focusing Using Plasmonic Nanostructures with Different Polarizations

Abstract:In this paper, the near field distribution patterns excited from half spiral nanoslits and gratings are investigated. The various near field distribution patterns observed are due to the interference of propagating surface plasmon emerging from the nanoslits or gratings. The half spiral nanoslits are incident with left and right-handed circular polarization. The resulting focal spots are found at different positions for left (LHC) and right-handed circular (RHC) polarizations. This is due to the change in phase difference of propagating surface plasmon waves emerging from the nanoslit when excited by different circular polarizations. The distance between the focal spots for left and right-handed polarizations is lambda(spp)/2. In addition, the half spiral nanoslit is also illuminated with linear polarization in different rotational angles. This paper also includes the near field distributions that result from the interference of surface plasmon polariton fields with partial spiral shape. It is believed that these interesting field patterns due to different arrangements of nanoslits could be used for trapping molecules, near field imaging and sensing.
Optical absorbing origin of chiroptical activity in planar plasmonic metasurfaces

Abstract:As a significant characteristic of many biomolecules, chemical substances, and artificial nanostructures, chirality conduce different types of optical interactions with the spin angular momentum of the impinging light field. Although, chiral arrangement and spatial phase retardation are the key factors for obtaining chirality in three-dimensional (3D) structures, the origin of chirality in the feasible planar structures has not been thoroughly addressed. Here using an intuitive and simple analytical approach, called cross-hybridization model, the essence and properties of the optical chirality of individual planar nanostructures are unveiled. In order to fundamentally address this chirality in terms of circular dichroism (CD), the chiroptical response of a simple dimer composed of the lossy nanoblocks in L-shape arrangement are investigated based on the provided optical interaction and loss effects. The theoretical findings, adequately supported by the numerical calculations, reveal that chiroptical activity occurs predominantly due to handedness-dependent absorption or heating loss in a nanostructured metasurface.

Abstract:Intrinsically chiral plasmonic nanomaterials exhibit intriguing geometry‐dependent chiroptical properties, which is due to the combination of plasmonic features with geometric chirality. Thus, chiral plasmonic nanomaterials have become promising candidates for applications in biosensing, asymmetric catalysis, biomedicine, photonics, etc. Recent advances in geometric control and optical tuning of intrinsically chiral plasmonic nanomaterials have further opened up a unique opportunity for their widespread applications in many emerging technological areas. Here, we review the recent developments in the geometric control of chiral plasmonic nanomaterials with special attention given to the quantitative understanding of the chiroptical structure‐property relationship. We also discuss several important optical spectroscopic tools for characterizing the optical chirality of plasmonic nanomaterials at both ensemble and single‐particle levels. We further highlight three emerging applications of chiral plasmonic nanomaterials including enantioselective sensing, enantioselective catalysis, and biomedicine. We envision that these advanced studies in chiral plasmonic nanomaterials will pave the way toward the rational design of chiral nanomaterials with desired optical properties for diverse emerging technological applications. Optical Synthesis of Transient Chirality in Achiral Plasmonic Metasurfaces

Abstract:As much as chiral metasurfaces are significant in stereochemistry and polarization control, tunable chiroptical response is important for their dynamic counterparts. A single metasurface device with invertible chiral states can selectively harness or manipulate both handedness of circularly polarized light upon demand, where in fact chiral inversion in molecules is an active research field. Tactics for chirality switching can be classified into geometry modification and refractive index tuning. However, these generally confront slow modulation speed or restrained refractive index tuning effects in the visible regime with forbidden 'true' inversion. Here, we reconfigure the 'optical' geometry through inhomogeneous spatiotemporal distribution of hot carriers as a breakthrough, transforming a plasmonic achiral metasurface into an ultrafast transient chiral medium with near-perfectly-invertible handedness in the visible. The photoinduced chirality relaxes through the fast spatial diffusion process of electron temperature compared to electron-phonon relaxation, empowering hot-carrier-based devices to be particularly suitable for ultrafast chiroptics.

Abstract:This Perspective concerns the latest developments in the field of chiral nanocrystals (NCs) and metastructures, focusing primarily on plasmonic nanostructures. Such nanomaterials exhibit unusually strong near-field and electromagnetic responses that enable efficient biosensing and light manipulation. Herein we share our thoughts on the latest trends that mark what we call a paradigm shift for the vast and dynamic field of chiroptical materials. The topics to be considered include polarization-sensitive photocatalysis with chiral plasmonic NCs, chiral bioconjugates, DNA-based assemblies, chiral growth, and we also describe the fundamental challenges for optical induction of chirality, transfer of chirality between different scales, and theoretical issues that nanoscience is facing.

Enhanced Optical Chirality through Locally Excited Surface Plasmon Polaritons

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures provide unique opportunities to improve the detection limits of chiroptical spectroscopies by enhancing chiral light–matter interactions. The most significant of such interaction occur in ultraviolet (UV) range of the electromagnetic spectrum that remains challenging to access by conventional localized plasmon resonance based sensors. Although surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on noble metal films can sustain resonances in the desired spectral range, their transverse magnetic nature has been an obstacle for enhancing chiroptical effects. Here we demonstrate, both analytically and numerically, that SPPs excited by near-field sources can exhibit rich and nontrivial chiral characteristics. In particular, we show that the excitation of SPPs by a chiral source not only results in a locally enhanced optical chirality but also achieves manifold enhancement of net optical chirality. Our finding that SPPs facilitate a plasmonic enhancement of optical chirality in the UV part of the spectrum is of great interest in chiral biosensing.

Abstract:From a geometrical perspective, a chiral object does not have mirror planes or inversion symmetry. It exhibits the same physical properties as its mirror image (enantiomer), except for the chiroptical activity, which is often the opposite. Recent advancements have identified particularly interesting implications of chirality on the optical properties of metal nanoparticles, which are intimately related to localized surface plasmon resonance phenomena. Although such resonances are usually independent of the circular polarization of light, specific strategies have been applied to induce chirality, both in assemblies and at the single-particle level. In this tutorial review, we discuss the origin of plasmonic chirality, as well as theoretical models that have been proposed to explain it. We then summarise recent developments in the synthesis of discrete nanoparticles with plasmonic chirality by means of wet-chemistry methods. We conclude with a discussion of promising applications for discrete chiral nanoparticles. We expect this tutorial review to be of interest to researchers from a wide variety of disciplines where chiral plasmonics can be exploited at the nanoparticle level, such as chemical sensing, photocatalysis, photodynamic or photothermal therapies, etc.

Abstract:Here, we observed the local angular chiroptical effects with unidirectional emission based on exquisitely designed plasmonic nanopillar antennas. Firstly, the scattering spectra for the asymmetric nanoantennas show double resonant peaks when illuminated by circular polarized light. The calculated circular dichroism reaches the maximum value at one resonant peak while almost disappears at the other peak. Secondly, when we turn to the momentum space for the CD-disappeared peak, the asymmetric nanoantennas exhibit different angular emission patterns that are sensitive to the handedness of light, which indicate the existence of the local angular chiroptical effects. The emission patterns also show unidirectional emission lobes in momentum space, which is distinct to other chiral phenomenon. Multipolar expansion and Green’s function method in stratified medium is used to demonstrate the inner mechanism of the observed local angular chiroptical effects, and we found the phase difference of the multipolar resonance is the origin of the distinct local angular chiroptical effects. Our work investigating the local angular chiroptical effects based on nanopillar will shed new light on optical chirality and will be widely applied to wavelength router, photon-detection, and other optoelectronic devices.
Magneto-optical chirality in a coherently coupled exciton-plasmon system

Abstract:Chirality is a fundamental asymmetry phenomenon, with chiral optical elements exhibiting asymmetric response in reflection or absorption of circularly polarized light. Recent realizations of such elements include nanoplasmonic systems with broken mirror symmetry and polarization-contrasting optical absorption known as circular dichroism. An alternative route to circular dichroism is provided by spin-valley polarized excitons in atomically thin semiconductors. In the presence of magnetic fields, they exhibit an imbalanced coupling to circularly polarized photons and thus circular dichroism. Here, we demonstrate that polarization-contrasting optical transitions associated with excitons in monolayer WSe$_2$ can be transferred to proximal plasmonic nanodisks by coherent coupling. The coupled exciton-plasmon system exhibits magneto-induced circular dichroism in a spectrally narrow window of Fano interference, which we model in a master equation framework. Our work motivates exciton-plasmon interfaces as building blocks of chiral metasurfaces for applications in information processing, non-linear optics and sensing.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive review of recent developments in the field of chiral plasmonics. Significant advances have been made recently in understanding the working principles of chiral plasmonic structures. With advances in micro- and nanofabrication techniques, a variety of chiral plasmonic nanostructures have been experimentally realized; these tailored chiroptical properties vastly outperform those of their molecular counterparts. We focus on chiral plasmonic nanostructures created using bottom-up approaches, which not only allow for rational design and fabrication but most intriguingly in many cases also enable dynamic manipulation and tuning of chiroptical responses. We first discuss plasmon-induced chirality, resulting from the interaction of chiral molecules with plasmonic excitations. Subsequently, we discuss intrinsically chiral colloids, which give rise to optical chirality owing to their chiral shapes. Finally, we discuss plasmonic chirality, achieved by arranging achiral plasmonic particles into handed configurations on static or active templates. Chiral plasmonic nanostructures are very promising candidates for real-life applications owing to their significantly larger optical chirality than natural molecules. In addition, chiral plasmonic nanostructures offer engineerable and dynamic chiroptical responses, which are formidable to achieve in molecular systems. We thus anticipate that the field of chiral plasmonics will attract further widespread attention in applications ranging from enantioselective analysis to chiral sensing, structural determination, and in situ ultrasensitive detection of multiple disease biomarkers, as well as optical monitoring of transmembrane transport and intracellular metabolism.

Abstract:Strong chiroptical effects recently reported result from the interaction of light with chiral plasmonic nanostructures. Such nanostructures can be used to enhance the chiroptical response of chiral molecules and could also significantly increase the enantiomeric excess of direct asymmetric synthesis and catalysis. Moreover, in optical metamaterials, chirality leads to negative refractive index and all the promising applications thereof. In this Progress Report, we highlight four different strategies which have been used to achieve giant chiroptical effects in chiral nanostructures. These strategies consecutively highlight the importance of chirality in the nanostructures (for linear and nonlinear chiroptical effects), in the experimental setup and in the light itself. Because, in the future, manipulating chirality will play an important role, we present two examples of chiral switches. Whereas in the first one, switching the chirality of incoming light causes a reversal of the handedness in the nanostructures, in the second one, switching the handedness of the nanostructures causes a reversal in the chirality of outgoing light.

Reversible Ultrafast Chiroptical Responses in Planar Plasmonic Nano‐Oligomer

Abstract:(Ultracompact chiral plasmonic nanostructures with unique chiral light‐matter interactions are vital for future photonic technologies. However, previous studies are limited to reporting their steady‐state performance, presenting a fundamental obstacle to the development of high‐speed optical devices with polarization sensitivity. Here, we provide a comprehensive analysis of ultrafast chiroptical response of chiral gold nano‐oligomers using time‐resolved polarimetric measurements. We observe significant differences in terms of the absorption intensity, thus hot electron generation, and hot carrier decay time upon polarized photo‐pumping, which are explained by a phenomenological model of the helicity‐resolved optical transitions. Moreover, the chiroptical signal is switchable by reversing the direction of the pump pulse, demonstrating the versatile modulation of polarization selection in a single device. Our results offer fundamental insights into the helicity‐resolved optical transitions in photoexcited chiral plasmonics and could facilitate the development of high‐speed polarization‐sensitive flat optics with potential applications in nanophotonics and quantum optics.) Observation of intrinsic chirality of surface plasmon resonances in single nanocrystals

Abstract:Surface plasmons in a centrosymmetric metal nanocrystal have been perceived as achiral, based on the quantum-mechanical theory of molecular optical activity. The one-electron theory is insufficient to describe optical activity in crystals, where spatial variation of polarization states along the light propagation direction is crucial in dimensions exceeding molecules. Such spatial-dispersion, which can drastically modify the optical near-field in plasmonic nanocrystals, has yet to be experimentally proved at the nanometer scale. Here, the experimental observation of natural circular dichroism of surface plasmons in spherical gold, silver, and copper nanocrystals in solution is presented. It originates from spatial dispersion (nonlocality) occurred at a dimension as small as 5 nanometers in the optical region. In particular, the electromagnetic pressure or longitudinal volume plasmons result in phase-shift and polarization rotation of the transverse electric field of incident light. Dipolar surface plasmons exhibit negative ellipticity and corresponding negative phase-shift of the electric field (i.e., optically left-handed), whereas quadrupolar surface plasmons have positive signs in both ellipticity and phase-shift (i.e., optically right-handed). Structural effects such as nanocrystal assembly, nanocrystal shape, electron spin-polarization, and plasmon-molecule interaction are accessed. This study implicates optical symmetry-breaking in isotropic nanocrystals by the axial polarization parallel to the wavevector, which will impact on conduction electron dynamics, hot-electron generation, and nonlinear optical response at the surface of plasmonic nanocrystals as well as optical excitation of bound d-band electrons.
