Abstract:The meaning maintenance model asserts that following a meaning threat, people will affirm any meaning frameworks that are available. Three experiments tested (a) whether people affirm alternative meaning frameworks after reading absurdist literature, (b) what role expectations play in determining whether absurdities are threatening, and (c) whether people have a heightened need for meaning following exposure to absurdist art. In Study 1, participants who read an absurd Kafka parable affirmed an alternative meaning framework more than did those who read a meaningful parable. In Study 2, participants who read an absurd Monty Python parody engaged in compensatory affirmation efforts only if they were led to expect a conventional story. In Study 3, participants who were exposed to absurdist art or reminders of their mortality, compared to participants exposed to representational or abstract art, reported higher scores on the Personal Need for Structure scale, suggesting that they experienced a heightened need for meaning.

Abstract:Albert Camus’ philosophy of the Absurd has been used as one of the many interpretative dialogues for Franz Kafka’s literary works, particularly his short story, A Hunger Artist. This paper explored the various facets of absurdism described in The Myth of Sisyphus and connects it with the short story by arguing that A Hunger Artist has more to reveal than its narrative content. Examining the similarities and differences between Camus’ Sisyphus and the protagonist of A Hunger Artist, helps produce absurdist interpretations of the text. The question of finding meaning in an indifferent universe and the predicament of being wedged in an endless loop of a monotonous cycle of life is explored until the very end of the short story. The dilemma of the protagonist, the disillusionment with society fused with the complicated reality of the human condition are all elements present in A Hunger Artist that help identify existentialism through fiction. When seen through the absurdist perspective, the hunger artist stands as a figure, depicting the disunity between man and the universe, and the internal and external conflict between the rational and irrational in an unresponsive universe. Analysing this fiction through the philosophy of absurdism generates significant standpoints that bring forth the author’s individual reasoning as a consolation to the questioning, existentialist mind.

Abstract:Two impulses, the desire to create and the desire to withdraw into oblivion and death, lie at the heart of Sadeq Hedayat's character. He was painfully sensitive to human weaknesses, loneliness, and suffering in a world that seemed all the darker through his eyes because the values against which he measured it were so demanding. He expected more of and for humanity than could be attained. A part of him sought to reject a life doomed to such imperfection, to draw back from the searing pain of a consciousness without hope. Yet it is also through this pain of consciousness that the creative act arises. This second force, the impulse to objectify the vision of Absurdity by transforming it into art, provided for Hedayat a somewhat precarious counterbalance to the impulse of negation. For creation, however tentative, constitutes a challenge to the forces of darkness. In the very act of depicting a universe without meaning, the artist implicitly contributes meaning of his own.

Abstract:The term ’absurdity’ is very much attached with the playwright, Samuel Beckett of the 1950s. It is a state of mind where nothing is concrete; everything is hazy and fluid. That type of mental make-up is made mainly due to a vacuum created in the socio-political and cultural arena after the World War II and culminated into a concrete shape in the fifties. In the field of theatre Samuel Beckett for the first time exposed the absurd situation of human beings on the stage. Though apparently he is tagged as an absurd dramatist, a question always peeps in the mind of the readers. Should he rightly be called an absurdist? Does he really believe in the concept of absurdity? This article tries to find out a rational answer to these queries analysing his two plays and attaching him with other dramatists of the time. It appears the dramas –‘Waiting for Godot’ and ‘Endgame’ speak of the meaningless journey of human life and it is the destiny. But, perhaps, there is a scope to analyse his dramas from a new perspective which is related to his new dramatic technique and the ending of his plays. Perhaps it can be boldly said that Beckett has not finished the dramas in an absurd manner; a kind of positive outlook towards life is coming out at the end of the plays. Waiting for a meaningful life is very much explicit in ‘Waiting for Godot’ and in ‘Endgame’. His other contemporary dramatists have dealt with the absurd situation of human life of the time in their own ways. Hence, Beckett has not only presented the absurd human condition in vivid manners, but has also tried to hint a way out to overcome the issues.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, I call attention to the Yogavāsiṣṭha’s depiction of Rāma’s existential crisis and Vasiṣṭha’s various methods for resolving it. However, I illuminate this crisis and Rāma’s lengthy monologue by turning to an altogether different frame of reference: Albert Camus’s philosophy of the absurd as developed in his absurd-oriented works, from The Myth of Sisyphus to The Rebel . Arguing that Rāma’s existential crisis is strongly reminiscent of Camus’s awakening to life’s absurdity, and that his monologue may be considered among the most successful meditations on this predicament, I examine not only Rāma’s quandary but also what the Yogavāsiṣṭha deems the ultimate response to it. In this way, I throw into sharp relief two contrasting responses to the absurd condition in human life that effectively challenge one another. Considering some of the Indian classical works, such as the Yogavāsiṣṭha , in this light suggests that they too acknowledge the absurd as their starting point and, at least to a certain extent, develop doctrines that aid their practitioners in facing it. Nevertheless, the Yogavāsiṣṭha also enables us to develop our thinking about absurdity and expand the discussion of constructive responses to the reality of the absurd.

Abstract:ABSURDISM is a literary school or we may refer to it as a significant movement which caught attention of the majority and seemed to be effortfully exerting to discover a genuine meaning of human existence. In the past as well as present, there is a visible control of the unrevised religious scriptures on the societal norms. This is chiefly because they have been almost unanimously and sentimentally sanctioned eternity. This does apply to all religions without exception. The human tragedy witnessed by all owing to Nature-calamities and personal shortcomings are never given any importance, to challenge the reverential governing authority or agency, that is held in high esteem. Leading a life without understanding its continual vagaries and unpredictable pattern, automatically forces Pessimism to creep in. It is unintelligible for a common man to know the paradigm of life designed by the intelligent higher power. Therefore, an offshoot of Pessimism which got energized to become vocal, appeared first through Existentialism and then Absurdism. All these have the sole purpose of surfacing the Truth with no prejudiced notion against the established schools of thought. The visibly clear inability of human beings to discover a method to seek inherent value and meaning of life, naturally creates a chaos. The helplessness is systematically covered or deliberately masked, with pretentions of intellectualism and adherance to religiosity. The technique has repeatedly failed to provide a lasting effect owing to which the sensitive minds are facing more conflict within. That is why Universe itself seems to be settling on irrational and meaningless pursuits. Ultimately anyone who involves himself in the futile efforts to set an orderliness meets more of opposition or conflict. Scientifically this has been predicted through the concept of an entropean world. Therefore, it would always be a matter of commonsense to reserve a separate field for emotionalism and another arena which would demand empirical proofs. On a strict perusal it would be realized that much of the hype sanctioned to the traditional claims over methodicity in living life collapses in practical life. This paper attempts to bring out the meaningful judgements of the Philosophical Absurdism. Keywords: Human Existence, Religiosity, Prejudiced Notions and Philosophical Absurdism.

Abstract:Political Theory, Volume 51, Issue 1, Page 112-125, February 2023. This essay is part of a special issue celebrating 50 years of Political Theory. The ambition of the editors was to mark this half century not with a retrospective but with a confabulation of futures. Contributors were asked: What will political theory look and sound like in the next century and beyond? What claims might political theorists or their descendants be making in ten, twenty-five, fifty, a hundred years' time? How might they vindicate those claims in their future contexts? How will the consistent concerns of political theorists evolve into the questions critical for people decades or centuries from now? What new problems will engage the political theorists (or their rough equivalents) of the future? What forms might those take? What follows is one of the many confabulations published in response to these queries.Our earth is approaching its end. Through Project Arcadia our species has a chance at escape. In this paper, I want to argue that Arcadia is all things considered unjustifiable and unadvisable. It is unjustifiable because human beings have proven themselves incapable of stewarding sentient life on planet earth; for example, our collective response to climate change has been dire, handled almost exclusively through adaptation, committing vast areas of the world to desolation, desertification, or disappearance. Basic respect for life, and what we likely will make of some other instances of it, should counsel humility as we contemplate relocating ourselves to other life-supporting domains. It is inadvisable because our species, like the world, is impermanent. We will, at some point, have to contemplate the ceasing of our existence, and it is my argument that we contemplate this ceasing on the terra firm of our own planet. In conclusion, and drawing on the work of Samuel Scheffler and the Japanese concept of mono no aware, I will argue that there is considerable value, admittedly tainted with considerable melancholy, to be had in grasping the opportunity provided by planetary devastation to achieve some semblance of narrative completion.

Abstract:The article considers the aesthetic nature, artistic specificity of the existential components of the motif of love, which dominates the flash fiction by Halyna Petrosanyak. The study, based on the analysis of the anthology “Don’t prevent me from saving the world”, elucidates the modern transformation of the symbolic archetypal determinant of the universal understanding of love as the highest value in all its manifestations. The author’s reception of the motif of love is analyzed in correlation with Fromm’s interpretation of human existential needs: in establishing connections, in overcoming oneself, in perceptionof rootedness, in self-identity, in building a life based on a system of values. It has been demonstrated that according to the writer, love is not merely a mechanical sum of regional and mental oral traditions or religious virtues, but their generalization into universal human realities, which form a dialectical unity of worldview, socio-psychological, and aesthetic principles of harmonious human life. And this constant is more often manifested in borderline situations of despair, hopelessness, where the heroes of her stories find themselves. The author seeks to combine often conflicting truths of various people, nations, cultures, religions, and philosophical views in order to emphasize the importance of love in human existence. The stated topic is inexhaustible and multifaceted, promising to inspire various literary, cultural, and philosophical discussions. This study aims to deepen the understanding of the author’s individual style, reflecting both the human features of the author and the main features of our time. In this period fiction as an art form plays a decisiverole in preserving language, spirituality, and national identity, and remains a promising area in literary discourse.
The Multilayered Meaning of Camus’ Absurdity as Seen in Caligula and the Stranger

Abstract:Albert Camus’s literary works and philosophical ideas have had a profound impact on the world. After the two world wars, Europe, tormented by the catastrophe of war, was in a climate of resentful reflection, exploration of the future and skepticism about old values. When the old order is shaken and called into question, man’s everyday life becomes a concrete manifestation of absurdity. The world is absurd, is the subjective feeling of many characters in Camus’ books. The term “absurdity”, a key term in Camus’s life, evolved and developed throughout his work. In this paper, it examines two of Camus’s books, The Stranger and Caligula, to analyze the “Absurd Man” in Camus’s work, then introduces The Myth of Sisyphus to explore how Camus confronts the absurdity in his work, in other words, what he advocates as “revolt”. By exploring how Camus deepens and broadens revolt, the paper offers a better understanding of the uplifting power of words in Camus’ literature work.

Abstract:The article is devoted to the pragmatic analysis of the dialogical texts in the novel “Catch-22” by J. Heller forming the intersection of the absurdist literature representatives’ theoretical views on the surface structure and semantic content of characters’ interpersonal relationships. The research is aimed at identifying the specificity of meaning generation as a mechanism of the author’s poetics of the absurd. In particular, this poetics is systematically reflected in the mechanical verbatim reproduction of a verbal stimulus by a reacting character. Applying a comparison analysis with the relevant contexts from S. Beckett’s absurdist play “Endgame”, in which the opposite trend is observed, it is established that there is a complete reduction of meaning in an effort to focus readers’ attention on the problematic nature of genuine effective communication in the modern world. It is revealed that in the context of J. Heller’s novel and S. Beckett’s play the pragmatic diversity of repetition as a means of constructing characters’ dialogical communication is associated with the contrasting interpretation of philosophical ideas of existentialism. For J. Heller repetition is an epistemological category reflecting the character’s dominant cognitions in the process of orientation in the hostile universe. The author’s implications such as the character’s subconscious fear, his permanent existential anxiety about the need to survive in an extreme situation, increased suspicion or dispassionate indifference towards the interlocutor, the protagonist’s ironic reaction to incompetence, irrationality of the actions of representatives of the authorities and auxiliary units of the flight garrison are revealed. Repetition in the characters’ speech is also associated with the desire to maintain the phatic contact with the interlocutor, whose state of affairs borders on mortal danger. The main character’ dialogical activity as an antihero is considered. It is concluded that in the novel “Catch-22” J. Heller subverts the absurdist literature basic principles, implemented through the reproduction of the characters’ dialogical speech. The author of the novel focuses readers’ attention on the relevance of preserving the traditional postulates of dialogical communication, and on the creative power of language structures and models in interpersonal interaction.

Abstract:This paper investigates the dichotomy between Dismaland, a dystopian inversion of Disneyland, and Disneyland as an enduring bastion of joyous illusion. Through the lenses of heterotopia, non-places, and chiasmus, it explores how their coexistence authentically grounds one while estranging the other. Banksy's inadvertent use of а chiastic structure in transforming Dismaland is analyzed for its reorganizational logic, and challenging norms. Drawing on Lefebvre, Foucault, Rancière, and Nikolchina, the paper examines cultural representations, spaces, and social relations. The analysis extends to non-places vs. heterotopias, emphasizing Dismaland's resistance to non-place classification. The paper advocates for heterotopias, like Dismaland, to challenge norms andfoster alternative cultural production, critiquing interpretations of Situationist theories and proposing Rancière's spatial occupation. The conclusion explores how chiastic structure and heterotopian thinking fuel Dismaland's revolutionary potential, challenging predetermined environments, and underscores art's transformative role in societal evolution towards a renewed existence.

From belligerent tweets on Twitter to "fake news" on Facebook and Instagram, where is this taking us? It is so easy to misunderstand a text and even an email. I've been thinking about the artists we work with and what we do in our professional lives. Performance is a form of communication between the artist and audience. The artist on stage can feel the unspoken response by the audience (even before there is or isn't applause or boos). There is an energy, a connection.
Critique of Reification of Art and Creativity in the Digital Age: A Lukácsian Approach to AI and NFT Art

Abstract:Abstract This article critically examines the emergent phenomena of AI-generated and NFT art through the lens of Georg Lukács’ theory of reification and its existential implications. Lukács argued that under capitalism, social relations and human experiences are transformed into objective, quantifiable commodities, leading to a fragmented and alienated consciousness. Applying this framework to AI and NFT art, these technologies can be said to represent extreme examples of the reification of art and creativity in the digital age. AI art generators reduce artistic production to abstract, computable properties divorced from lived experience, while NFTs transform digital art into speculative commodities, imposing the logic of private property and exchange value onto the previously open domain of online culture. The existential dimension of this reification is explored, raising questions about the nature of creativity, originality, and the value of art in an increasingly financialized and automated world. The article suggests that a Lukácsian critique must not only diagnose the reified character of these cultural forms but also identify their potential for resistance and transformation, pointing toward a re-humanized and emancipatory vision of art in the digital age. Contemporary theorists such as Tiziana Terranova, Nick Dyer-Witheford, and Benjamin Noys are invoked to further elucidate these issues.

Abstract:In The Myth of Sisyphus, Camus advocates scornful defi ance in the face of our absurd, meaningless existence. Although Nagel agrees that human life possesses an absurd dimension, he objects to Camus’ existentialist „dramatics”. For Nagel, absurdity arises from the irreducible tension between our subjective and objective perspectives on life. The article offers a critical reconstruction of Camus’ and Nagel’s positions, and elaborates Nagel’s critique of Camus in order to argue that humour is an appropriate response to absurdity.

Abstract:Abstract The purpose of this essay is to capture and convey, through the use of different works of philosophy that encapsulate thoughts on the same idea, the motif of the absurdity of life in Ernest Hemingway’s first novel The Sun Also Rises . The concept of the absurd will be, first and foremost, examined through absurdist criticism of the novel, using the philosophical thought of Albert Camus, Soren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche and other philosophers who captured the essence of the absurd in their philosophy, all in order to represent this concept in Hemingway’s novel and to show how it truly manifests itself upon some of the most important characters’ psychology and their actions, portrayed throughout the three parts of the book. Mention will be made of the concept of “Lost generation” as it is the cornerstone to understanding, firstly, the characters’ background and current psychological status and the effects that the war had on an entire generation, leading them to an unwilling search for meaning in what this essay strives to present as a meaningless life.

Abstract:In the artwork Syntropic Counterpoints: Metaphysics of The Machines, we tend to explore phenomena of AI aesthetic and challenge machine abstraction. Our approach toward the liberation of machine creativity is through the use of words and grammar as a creative tool humans developed to express worlds "beyond" the world, existing and non-existing realities. We are lead by Nietzsche's claim that grammar is the "Metaphysics of the People," as such grammar, content, and vision generated during the philosophical discussion between our AI clones is "Metaphysics of Machines" through we can experience their realities and start to question our own.
