Abstract:Carbon-based materials stand out as photothermal materials for interfacial solar evaporation due to their high solar absorptance, chemical stability, adjustable structure, ease of preparation, and low cost compared to other candidate materials. Development of multifunctional carbon-based materials that can endow the fabricated evaporators with reduced energy loss and evaporation enthalpy is highly demanded to achieve extraordinary evaporation rates. Herein, high-solar-absorptivity multi-shelled hollow porous carbon nanospheres are fabricated and incorporated with an insulating hydrogel bottom layer into an integrated solar evaporator. It achieves a fast photothermal response and a remarkably high solar evaporation rate of 2.4 kg m- 2 h- 1 under one sun. Multiphysics simulation indicates that the porous multi-shelled hollow structure enables sufficient and effective interactions between water and the hydrophilic carbon surfaces, thus producing more intermediate water (IW) and lowering the evaporation enthalpy. The solar-driven water evaporation in the evaporator is probed by in-situ low-field nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation time measurements, based on which conversion of free water (FW) into IW during solar evaporation is proposed. The molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the evolution of FW clusters into IW is facilitated on the carbon surface, thus replenishing the evaporated IW and maintaining continuous high evaporation rates. The demonstrated solar evaporator exemplifies the effectiveness of structural and thermal management in enhancing solar-driven desalination.

Abstract:Water purification via interfacial solar steam generation exhibits promising potential. However, salt crystallization on evaporators reduces solar absorption and obstructs water supply. To address it, a waffle-shaped solar evaporator (WSE) has been designed. WSE is fabricated via a zinc-assisted pyrolysis route, combining low-cost biomass carbon sources, recyclable zinc, and die-stamping process. This route enables cost-effective production without the need of sophisticated processing. As compared to conventional plane-shaped evaporators, WSE is featured by extra sidewalls for triggering the convection with the synergistic solute and thermal Marangoni effects. Consequently, WSE achieves spontaneous salt rejection and durable evaporation stability. It has demonstrated continuous operation for more than 60 days in brine without fouling.

Abstract:The solar -driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) is a clean and efficient technology to mitigate freshwater shortages. A robust and low-cost evaporator is essential for the practical implementation of SDIE systems. Herein, we design a fantastic blended -fiber -based evaporator using weaving techniques. This mixture fabric is crafted using polyethylene terephthalate fibers and linen threads. It makes full use of the excellent light absorption, tensile strength, and corrosion resistance of polyethylene terephthalate fibers. Meanwhile, the mixture fabric reserves exceptional air permeability and water supply capability of linen thread. We optimize the density of the mixture fabric by adjusting the reed count and the weft count. It is found that the combination of the 40 reed and a single weft yarn produces the most effective and stable evaporator. The optimized mixture fabric makes a good trade-off between the water supply to the evaporator and solar -thermal evaporation. As a result, the evaporator achieves a high evaporation rate and efficiency (- 1 .53 kg /m 2 /h, - 90%) under 1 sun illumination, which surpasses most of the existing two-dimensional evaporators based on metal nanomaterials, polymers, carbonbased materials, and fabrics. Our work opens a new horizon for the development of efficient, scalable, flexible, low-cost, corrosion -resistant, and stable evaporators.

Abstract:The scarcity of freshwater is one of the challenges faced by humanity today. Solar desalination technology is gaining increasing attention due to its environmental friendliness and sustainability. However, the service life of the evaporator is significantly reduced by the problem of salt deposition during the evaporation process. In this work, a porous Janus evaporator with asymmetric wettability was fabricated using an atomization-assisted non-solvent induced phase separation method. The bottom surface of the Janus evaporator was fabricated with polyacrylonitrile and polyvinylpyrrolidone, working as capillary "pumps" to ensure adequate water supply. The upper surface was made of polyvinylidene fluoride which endows the evaporator with self-floating properties and the addition of CNTs improves its solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency. The micro-nano composite continuous porous structure of the Janus evaporator is beneficial to the enhancement of the capillary action, leading to good salt-repellent performance. The solar-to-vapor efficiency of the seawater desalination experiment under 1 kW·m −2 of sunlight was 81.61%, and the water evaporation rate was 1.30 kg·m −2 ·h −1 . In addition, the evaporator exhibited excellent stability under multiple cycles. It also functioned well in the treatment of organic wastewater. This work provides a novel method for preparing solar desalination materials.

Abstract:Modifying the interface of the interfacial evaporator has been shown to be an effective way to increase the evaporation rate. In this study, a new method of modifying hydrophobic fumed silica (FS) on the evaporation layer surface is proposed to enhance the evaporation performance of the interfacial evaporator. It is found that the FS suspension concentration has great control over the microstructure and surface wettability of the evaporated layer, and the water-air interface area of the evaporated surface is effectively expanded. As a result, the evaporation rate within the closed chamber is enhanced by similar to 14% to 1.33 kg m(-2) h(-1) at the light intensity input of 1 kW m(-2). The mechanism of performance enhancement is illustrated by simulations and modeling calculations. To further improve the evaporation performance, we constructed a 10-stage multistage distillation (MSD) device to recycle latent heat and achieve an evaporation rate of 5.03 kg m(-2) h(-1) at 1 kW m(-2) light intensity. In addition, the device was proven to operate efficiently and stably in brine and achieve zero liquid discharge. Therefore, the method of modifying an appropriate amount of FS has a good prospect for solar desalination.

Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial evaporation has great potential for energy-efficient purification of high-salinity wastewater, but there is a long-standing trade-off to achieve ultrahigh water evaporation while assuring salt resistance performance. Here, inspired by the leaves-on-stem architecture and transpiration of natural balsa wood, a wood-inspired bimodal evaporator (WBE) with both high evaporation and durable self-salt-discharge in high-salinity brine was prepared via an ice-template method. The hierarchical design and a bimodal porous structure configuration of the WBE provide efficient heat energy confinement, controllable vaporization enthalpy, and abundant salt exchange sites, as revealed by numerical simulations and demonstrated by experiments. The designed WBE achieved ultrahigh water evaporation capacity (3.02 kg m −2 h −1 , 91.8% pure water efficiency) and long-term salt resistance (continuous 100 h in 20 wt% brine) under 1 sun irradiation. Especially, the bimodal design endowed the WBE with remarkable long-term structure reliability even after 1000 repeated compressions at 80% deformation. This work provides a promising approach to achieve durable and efficient purification of high-salinity wastewater.

Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial evaporation technology was considered a promising way to effectively alleviate the global freshwater crisis. However, it is still a major challenge to design evaporators with efficient thermal management, salt resistant and self-floating ability to realize efficient clean water production. Here, we design a double-layer hydrogel evaporator with self-floating system. The evaporator is prepared from expanded polystyrene board, poly (vinyl alcohol), polyvinylpyrrolidone, agar and conductive carbon black. The structural design of the evaporator improves water transport capacity of the evaporation system and effectively reduces heat loss, so that the evaporator has efficient salt resistance and thermal localization. The evaporator demonstrates an outstanding evaporation rate and evaporation efficiency of 2.77 kg m -2 h −1 and 94.25 % under 1 kW m −2 illumination. Additionally, the evaporator exhibits good stability in the 10-cycle solar evaporation experiment. Furthermore, the evaporator exhibits excellent salt resistance in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution during continuous evaporation for 9 h at 1 kW m −2 illumination. Moreover, the purification rates of the organic wastewater 4-nitrophenol and methylene blue by the evaporator reached 99.8 % and 100 %, respectively. This evaporator has stable and efficient capability of solar water purification, providing a new way for large-scale solar desalination and water purification.

Abstract:A solar evaporator with simple fabrication process, exceptional photothermal conversion efficiency and dependable continuous water evaporation holds significant potential for seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. Despite the substantial research dedicated to developing high-efficiency solar evaporators, there remains a need for additional exploration to tackle concerns such as salt crystallization, low evaporation efficiency, poor durability and stability. Here, an efficient water transport PVA hydrogel (water transport layer) and polydopamine/carbon black modified 3D raised-fabric (photothermal layer) are innovatively designed as solar evaporators. The synergistic effect between the periodic raised structure and polydopamine/carbon black results in outstanding photothermal conversion capabilities of PDA/CB@RF. Meanwhile, the porous structure of PVA hydrogel and its vertically aligned channels facilitate ion exchange and ensure a consistent water supply to the photothermal layer. This phenomenon serves to prevent the accumulation of salt in the photothermal layer, thereby markedly enhance the water evaporation capability of the PDA/CB@RF evaporator. The results demonstrate that the PDA/CB@RF evaporator system exhibits excellent photothermal conversion performance with its surface temperature rapidly ascending to 73.3 °C under 1 sun light intensity, and effectively boost the water evaporation rate (1.73 kg m -2 h −1 , 1 sun). Furthermore, the PDA/CB@RF evaporator exhibits excellent conversion efficiency (91.9 %) and self-desalting capability. Overall, this solar evaporator system with a 3D raised fabric design integrates light and thermal energy, consistent water evaporation and self-desalting functionalities, which makes it hold the potential to solve the pressing challenge of water shortage.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic solar-driven interfacial evaporator is emerging as an energy-efficient technology for seawater desalination, which can be easily fabricated using robust photothermal superhydrophobic coating and substrate. The bifunctional coating is of great importance in providing stable and highly photothermal and superhydrophobic performance for a solar-driven interfacial evaporator. In this work, a mussel-inspired PANI@PDA@CNT/EP/FAS-17 composite was created to fabricate the bifunctional coating on the melamine sponge substrate for seawater desalination. The solar-vapor conversion efficiency of the resulting PANI@PDA@CNT/EP/FAS-17 solar-driven interfacial evaporator is 84.93 % and the evaporation rate is 1.3 kg∙m −2 h −1 under 1 Sun. Furthermore, the solar-vapor conversion efficiency and the evaporation rate are stable in a simulated seawater environment with a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The resulting superhydrophobic solar-driven interfacial evaporator is expected to have a wide application prospect in seawater desalination.

Abstract:Solar thermal conversion (STC) evaporation is a practical and sustainable technology for seawater desalination and sewage abatement. However, both the limited evaporation efficiency and long-term conversion stability restrain its practical application. Herein, a lotus morphology-inspired biomimetic evaporator (MBE) with Janus wettability and bimodal pores is well designed for high-rate and enduring STC evaporation. Just like lotus leaves, the hydrophobic surface of the MBE cuts off the capillarity of water, hence achieving high-efficient salt resistance and solar absorption, while the hydrophilic substance provides fast water transportation. The bimodal-pore structures formed by incorporating lotus root-like mesopores into the 3D truss-like macropores effectively decrease density and thermal conductivity for self-floating and thermal regulation. This results in a low water vaporization enthalpy of 1846 J g−1, leading to a much higher evaporation rate at the same conversion efficiency. This work may open new avenues for developing high-performance evaporation systems.
Janus 3D graphene based evaporator with controllable wettability for highly efficient solar desalination

Abstract:Interfacial solar desalination has been widely favored as a convenient technology to relieve the prominent lack of clean water. However, it remains urgent and challenging to develop materials that can simultaneously reduce heat loss and provide effective channels for water transport without salt accumulation. In this work, we developed a free-standing Janus 3D graphene based evaporator modified by a wettability-controllable UV-O 3 treatment method. The upper hydrophilic layer of the Janus 3DG plays the role of continuous water supplement for evaporation, while the bottom hydrophobic layer could support material floating on the water surface to ensure effective light absorption and contribute to heat loss reduction. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect of the structure, Janus 3DG delivers a stable water evaporation rate of 1.71 kg m −2 h −1 under 1 kW m −2 illumination, a highly efficient conversion efficiency of 94.1 % and exhibits excellent salt-resistance in high concentration simulated seawater (10 wt%) without salt accumulation. The Janus 3DG had satisfactory availability for solar desalination and wastewater purification. Our study establishes and validates a simple method for fabricating an efficient solar-driven evaporator for desalination.

Abstract:Interfacial solar desalination has been widely considered as one of the promising pathways to alleviate worldwide water scarcity. An ideal evaporator for interfacial solar desalination in practical use requires facile preparation, high efficiency, low cost, flexibility, excellent salt resistance, and good stability, etc. This work presents the high-performance solar desalination by using a flexible 2D@3D Janus evaporator, which is prepared via a facile two-step dipping strategy. Due to the hydrophobicity-induced interfacial layer, the top layer of the Janus evaporator plays the role of effective solar harvesting and solar-to-heat conversion, and salt rejection, while the hydrophilic bottom layer accounts for efficient heat localization and continuous water supply. Consequently, under the low solar irradiations (1.0–2.5 kW m−2), the Janus evaporator exhibits high-performance freshwater output (1.2–3.1 kg m−2 h−1), high-efficiency solar conversion (90.67%–94.62%), and excellent desalination performance. In addition, this Janus evaporator shows well flexibility and structural stability, good cost effectivity and long-term salt resistance over 7 days for continuous steam generation. By combining these advantages, this Janus evaporator holds great promise in solar-driven water purification, sterilization, and so forth.

Interface Structure Strengthening of a Mesoporous Silicon/Expanded Perlite Microevaporator for Efficient Solar-Driven Interfacial Evaporation

Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is one of the cutting-edge technologies for seawater desalination and wastewater purification. Herein, a floating carbon-coated silica microsphere/expanded perlite integrated interfacial microevaporator (HEPCL) is reported. The carbon nanolayer allows the HEPCL to have better broadband light absorption performance than natural graphite and graphene oxide. Through the low density of expanded perlite, HEPCL particles can self-float on the water surface and self-aggregate into an integrated whole under surface tension, which enhances the heat collection capacity. The hierarchical porous structure of the HEPCL has a continuous water absorption capacity. Notably, water molecules adsorbed in the HEPCL have a high desorption energy, which reduces the water evaporation enthalpy (1621 kJ/kg), making it easy to remove with external energy. Thanks to the design merits, the HEPCL achieves a water evaporation rate of 1.551 kg m-2 h-1 (efficiency of 94.85%) under 1 sun irradiation and may inspire a practicable solution of water scarcity.
High-flux flowing interfacial water evaporation under multiple heating sources enabled by a biohybrid hydrogel

Abstract:Interfacial water evaporation holds great promise in clean water production. However, developing the evaporator with a high evaporation rate and excellent antifouling property remains a challenge. In this paper, we designed a polypyrrole-coated bacterial cellulose hydrogel (PPy-BCH) with a low evaporation enthalpy of 1.97 MJ kg−1. PPy-BCH was used as the absorber of the flowing evaporator driven by solar irradiation and electro-heating. The highest evaporation rate of 1.78 and 5.88 kg m−2 h−1 was obtained in pure water under 1 sun and 70 ℃ heating conditions, respectively. Benefitting from the superior salt-rejecting ability of this structure and the excellent antifouling properties of the hydrogel, the evaporator enabled a stable performance in seawater and industrial wastewater. The electro-heating platform could be replaced by low-temperature waste heat for large-scale application, considering that the amount of low-temperature waste heat below 200 ℃ is vast worldwide. In addition, the life cycle assessment showed that the flowing evaporator driven by waste heat enabled a lower carbon emission than desalination technologies such as reverse osmosis. Finally, we also demonstrated that the waste heat could enhance the evaporation performance of the evaporator under weak solar irradiation, therefore achieving all-weather clean water production. In conclusion, this study provided a novel way to design a high-flux interfacial water evaporator for fast water treatment and clean water production.

Abstract:The limitations of a single-function solar-driven interfacial evaporation device applied to unpurified water (brine and wastewater) with a complex composition have been exposed. Herein, a solar-driven photothermal evaporation device with the nature of salt-resistance as well as removal of Rh B remaining and oil slicks in bulk water is established through a novel design, with the aim of breaking the current limitations. Concretely, the oil slicks (toluene and cyclohexane) and residual Rh B in bulk water are eliminated by the superhydrophobic part of the device, which makes it possible to protect the device and the environment from the negative effects of oil slicks and the enrichment of dyes. Furthermore, the purification efficiency of the device is above 99.9 % for heavy metal ions and 99.9 % for Rh B solution. Then, the device shows evaporation rates of 2.81 kg·m −2 ·h −1 (deionized water), 2.77 kg·m −2 ·h −1 (3.5 wt% NaCl solution), and 2.60 kg·m −2 ·h −1 (10 wt% NaCl solution) under one sun illumination in different water sources. Meanwhile, the salt-resistance mechanism of the device is the passive transport of salt solution with high concentration between the bulk water and the evaporation surface, which is ascertained through the salt flow being observed in bulk water. A great potential is revealed in the device in desalination and wastewater purification.

Abstract:Three dimensional composite hydrogels have been good candidates for solar driven interfacial evaporation, and it has remained a great challenge to develop high performance hydrogel evaporators with excellent mechanical properties, high evaporation efficiency and rate, and outstanding durability. Here, we prepare a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/acidified carbon nanotubes (ACNTs) composite hydrogel for solar-powered desalination. ACNTs are uniformly dispersed in the hydrogel and forms hydrogel bonding with PVA macromolecules, greatly improving the mechanical properties of the polymer hydrogel. With excellent light absorption, heat localization and water transport capabilities, the composite hydrogel evaporator possesses a high evaporation rate (up to 3.85 kg•m -2 •h -1 ) and a photothermal conversion efficiency of 87.6%. This hydrogel evaporator can work in a high concentration brine and during cyclic evaporation, exhibiting outstanding salt rejection performance and long-term durability. The high performance ACNTs filled hydrogel shows promising applications in solar desalination.
