Abstract:We introduce local invariants of algebraic spaces and stacks which measure how far they are from being a scheme. Using these invariants, we develop mostly topological criteria to determine when the moduli space of a stack is a scheme. As an application we study moduli of principal bundles on a smooth projective curve.

Abstract:In algebraic geometry there is a well-known categorical equivalence between the category of normal proper integral curves over a field $k$ and the category of finitely generated field extensions of $k$ of transcendence degree $1$. In this paper we generalize this equivalence to the category of normal quasi-compact universally closed separated integral $k$-schemes of dimension $1$ and the category of field extensions of $k$ of transcendence degree $1$. Our key technique are morphisms of finite expansion which can be considered as relaxation of morphisms of finite type. Since the schemes in the generalized category have many properties similar to normal proper integral curves, we call them normal integral universally closed curves over $k$.

Abstract:We show that for each algebraic space that is separated and of finite type over a field, and whose affinization is connected and reduced, there is a universal morphism to a para-abelian variety. The latter are schemes that acquire the structure of an abelian variety after some ground field extension. This generalizes classical results of Serre on universal morphisms from algebraic varieties to abelian varieties. Our proof relies on corresponding facts for the proper case, together with the structural properties of group schemes, removal of singularities by alterations, and ind-objects. It turns out that the formation of the Albanese variety commutes with base-change up to universal homeomorphisms. We also give a detailed analysis of Albanese maps for algebraic curves and algebraic groups, with special emphasis on imperfect ground fields.

Abstract:Working in an abstract, homotopy type theory based axiomatization of the higher Zariski-topos called synthetic algebraic geometry, we show that the Picard group of projective n-space is the integers, the automorphism group of projective n-space is PGL(n+1) and morphisms between projective standard spaces are given by homogenous polynomials in the usual way.

Abstract:This paper exposes the language of geometric contexts and elementary schemes, which is a functorial formalism to study categories of geometric objects such as schemes, topological manifolds, differential manifolds, analytic manifolds, etc. Through the theory of Grothendieck topologies and geometric contexts, geometry turns out to be the study of local properties which are stable under base change.

Abstract:Poonen and Gabber independently showed that any smooth geometrically irreducible projective scheme over a finite field has a smooth space filling curve, that is, a smooth curve defined over the field and passes through all points over the field. However, except the case of projective plane, no concrete example was found in literature. In this note, we construct explicit examples of algebraic space filling curves in three dimensional projective space, in particular the ones with minimum degree.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a field that is finitely generated over its prime field. In Grothendieck's anabelian letter to Faltings, he conjectured that sending a $k$-scheme to its étale topos defines a fully faithful functor from the localization of the category of finite type $k$-schemes at the universal homeomorphisms to a category of topoi. We prove Grothendieck's conjecture for infinite fields of arbitrary characteristic. In characteristic $0$, this shows that seminormal finite type $k$-schemes can be reconstructed from their étale topoi, generalizing work of Voevodsky. In positive characteristic, this shows that perfections of finite type $k$-schemes can be reconstructed from their étale topoi.

Geometric realisation over aspherical groups

Abstract:We prove that the direct sums of extensions of scalars of relation modules are geometrically realisable as the second homotopy group of a finite 2-complex. We use this to exhibit a finite 2-complex with fundamental group the $(10,15)$ torus knot group and non-free $\pi_2$, yielding exotic presentations of a group for which no such examples had previously been known. We conclude by constructing stably free non-free modules over an infinite family of Baumslag-Solitar groups; it remains to determine whether these modules are geometrically realisable by finite 2-complexes.

Perfect algebraic spaces and perfect morphisms

Abstract:We develop a theory of perfect algebraic spaces that extend the so-called perfect schemes to the setting of algebraic spaces. We prove several desired properties of perfect algebraic spaces. This extends some previous results of perfect schemes, including the recent one developed by Bertapelle et al. in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1611.02060" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1611.02060">arXiv:1611.02060</a>. Moreover, our theory extends the previous one developed by Xinwen Zhu in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1407.8519" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1407.8519">arXiv:1407.8519</a>. The perfect morphisms will provide equivalent descriptions to perfect algebraic spaces. Our method to define perfect algebraic spaces differs from all previous approaches, as we utilize representability of functors. There is a natural notion of algebraic Frobenius morphisms of algebraic spaces, which is analogous to the absolute Frobenius morphisms of schemes. In terms of algebraic Frobenius morphisms, one can define perfection of an algebraic space.

Abstract:We consider the Zariski space of all places of an algebraic function field $F|K$ of arbitrary characteristic and investigate its structure by means of its patch topology. We show that certain sets of places with nice properties (e.g., prime divisors, places of maximal rank, zero-dimensional discrete places) lie dense in this topology. Further, we give several equivalent characterizations of fields that are large, in the sense of F. Pop's Annals paper {\it Embedding problems over large fields}. We also study the question whether a field $K$ is existentially closed in an extension field $L$ if $L$ admits a $K$-rational place. In the appendix, we prove the fact that the Zariski space with the Zariski topology is quasi-compact and that it is a spectral space.

Abstract:Abstract We exhibit basic algebro-geometric results on the formal model of semi-infinite flag varieties and its Schubert varieties over an algebraically closed field ${\mathbb K}$ of characteristic $\neq 2$ from scratch. We show that the formal model of a semi-infinite flag variety admits a unique nice (ind-)scheme structure, its projective coordinate ring has a $\mathbb {Z}$ -model and it admits a Frobenius splitting compatible with the boundaries and opposite cells in positive characteristic. This establishes the normality of the Schubert varieties of the quasi-map space with a fixed degree (instead of their limits proved in [K, Math. Ann. 371 no.2 (2018)]) when $\mathsf {char}\, {\mathbb K} =0$ or $\gg 0$ , and the higher-cohomology vanishing of their nef line bundles in arbitrary characteristic $\neq 2$ . Some particular cases of these results play crucial roles in our proof [47] of a conjecture by Lam, Li, Mihalcea and Shimozono [60] that describes an isomorphism between affine and quantum K -groups of a flag manifold.

Abstract:Artin, Tate and Van den Bergh initiated the field of noncommutative projective algebraic geometry by fruitfully studying geometric data associated to noncommutative graded algebras. More specifically, given a field $\mathbb K$ and a graded $\mathbb K$-algebra $A$, they defined an inverse system of projective schemes $\Upsilon_A = \{{\Upsilon_d(A)}\}$. This system affords an algebra, $\mathbf B(\Upsilon_A)$, built out of global sections, and a $\mathbb K$-algebra morphism $\tau: A \to \mathbf B(\Upsilon_A)$. We study and extend this construction. We define, for any natural number $n$, a category ${\tt PSys}^n$ of projective systems of schemes and a contravariant functor $\mathbf B$ from ${\tt PSys}^n$ to the category of associative $\mathbb K$-algebras. We realize the schemes ${\Upsilon_d(A)}$ as ${\rm Proj \ } {\mathbf U}_d(A)$, where ${\mathbf U}_d$ is a functor from associative algebras to commutative algebras. We characterize when the morphism $\tau: A \to \mathbf B(\Upsilon_A)$ is injective or surjective in terms of local cohomology modules of the ${\mathbf U}_d(A)$. Motivated by work of Walton, when $\Upsilon_A$ consists of well-behaved schemes, we prove a geometric result that computes the Hilbert series of $\mathbf B(\Upsilon_A)$. We provide many detailed examples that illustrate our results. For example, we prove that for some non-AS-regular algebras constructed as twisted tensor products of polynomial rings, $\tau$ is surjective or an isomorphism.

Abstract:If $X$ is a variety with an additional structure $\xi$, such as a marked point, a divisor, a polarization, a group structure and so forth, then it is possible to study whether the pair $(X,\xi)$ is defined over the field of moduli. There exists a precise definition of ``algebraic structures'' which covers essentially all of the obvious concrete examples. We prove several formal results about algebraic structures. There are immediate applications to the study of fields of moduli of curves and finite sets in $\mathbb{P}^{2}$, but the results are completely general. Fix $G$ a finite group of automorphisms of $X$, a $G$-structure is an algebraic structure with automorphism group equal to $G$. First, we prove that $G$-structures on $X$ are in a $1:1$ correspondence with twisted forms of $X/G\dashrightarrow\mathcal{B} G$. Secondly we show that, under some assumptions, every algebraic structure on $X$ is equivalent to the structure given by some $0$-cycle. Third, we give a cohomological criterion for checking the existence of $G$-structures not defined over the field of moduli. Fourth, we identify geometric conditions about the action of $G$ on $X$ which ensure that every $G$-structure is defined over the field of moduli.

Abstract:Pseudoexponential fields are exponential fields similar to complex exponentiation satisfying the Schanuel Property, which is the abstract statement of Schanuel's Conjecture, and an adapted form of existential closure. Here we show that if we remove the Schanuel Property and just care about existential closure, it is possible to create several existentially closed exponential functions on the algebraic numbers that still have similarities with complex exponentiation. The main difficulties are related to the arithmetic of algebraic numbers, and they can be overcome with known results about specialisations of multiplicatively independent functions on algebraic varieties.

Abstract:We define a variant of normal basis, called a {\em Galois scaffolding}, that allows for an easy determination of valuation, and has implications for Galois module structure. We identify fully ramified, elementary abelian extensions of local function fields of characteristic $p$, called {\em one-dimensional}, that, in a particular sense, are as simple as cyclic degree $p$ extensions, and prove the statement in the title above.

Abstract:In this essay we study various notions of projective space (and other schemes) over $\mathbb{F}_{1^\ell}$, with $\mathbb{F}_1$ denoting the field with one element. Our leading motivation is the "Hiden Points Principle," which shows a huge deviation between the set of rational points as closed points defined over $\mathbb{F}_{1^\ell}$, and the set of rational points defined as morphisms $\texttt{Spec}(\mathbb{F}_{1^\ell}) \mapsto \mathcal{X}$. We also introduce, in the same vein as Kurokawa [13], schemes of $\mathbb{F}_{1^\ell}$-type, and consider their zeta functions.
