Abstract:For an $n$-qubit system, a rational function on the space of mixed states which is invariant with respect to the action of the group of local symmetries may be viewed as a detailed measure of entanglement. We show that the field of all such invariant rational functions is purely transcendental over the complex numbers and has transcendence degree $4^n - 2n-1$. An explicit transcendence basis is also exhibited.

Abstract:After more than a century since its birth, Quantum Theory still eludes our understanding. If asked to describe it, we have to resort to abstract and ad hoc principles about complex Hilbert spaces. How is it possible that a fundamental physical theory cannot be described using the ordinary language of Physics? Here we offer a contribution to the problem from the angle of Quantum Information, providing a short non-technical presentation of a recent derivation of Quantum Theory from information-theoretic principles. The broad picture emerging from the principles is that Quantum Theory is the only standard theory of information compatible with the purity and reversibility of physical processes.

Symmetric Informationally Complete Measurements Identify the Irreducible Difference between Classical and Quantum Systems

Abstract:We describe a general procedure for associating a minimal informationally-complete quantum measurement (or MIC) and a set of linearly independent post-measurement quantum states with a purely probabilistic representation of the Born Rule. Such representations are motivated by QBism, where the Born Rule is understood as a consistency condition between probabilities assigned to the outcomes of one experiment in terms of the probabilities assigned to the outcomes of other experiments. In this setting, the difference between quantum and classical physics is the way their physical assumptions augment bare probability theory: Classical physics corresponds to a trivial augmentation -- one just applies the Law of Total Probability (LTP) between the scenarios -- while quantum theory makes use of the Born Rule expressed in one or another of the forms of our general procedure. To mark the irreducible difference between quantum and classical, one should seek the representations that minimize the disparity between the expressions. We prove that the representation of the Born Rule obtained from a symmetric informationally-complete measurement (or SIC) minimizes this distinction in at least two senses -- the first to do with unitarily invariant distance measures between the rules, and the second to do with available volume in a reference probability simplex (roughly speaking a new kind of uncertainty principle). Both of these arise from a significant majorization result. This work complements recent studies in quantum computation where the deviation of the Born Rule from the LTP is measured in terms of negativity of Wigner functions.

Abstract:This paper answers Bell's question: What does quantum information refer to? It is about quantum properties represented by subspaces of the quantum Hilbert space, or their projectors, to which standard (Kolmogorov) probabilities can be assigned by using a projective decomposition of the identity (PDI or framework) as a quantum sample space. The single framework rule of consistent histories prevents paradoxes or contradictions. When only one framework is employed, classical (Shannon) information theory can be imported unchanged into the quantum domain. A particular case is the macroscopic world of classical physics whose quantum description needs only a single quasiclassical framework. Nontrivial issues unique to quantum information, those with no classical analog, arise when aspects of two or more incompatible frameworks are compared.

Quantum information recast via multiresolution in $L_2(0,1]$

Abstract:We present a multiresolution approach to the theory of quantum information. It arose from an effort to develop a systematic mathematical approach to the analysis of an infinite array of qubits, i.e., a structure that may be interpreted as a quantum metamaterial. Foundational to our approach are two mathematical constructions with classical roots: the Borel isomorphism and the Haar basis. Here, these constructions are intertwined to establish an identification between $L_2(0,1]$ and the Hilbert space of an infinite array of qubits and to enable analysis of operators that act on arrays of qubits (either finite or infinite). The fusion of these two concepts empowers us to represent quantum operations and observables through geometric operators. As an unexpected upshot, we observe that the fundamental concept of calculus is inherent in an infinite array of qubits; indeed, the antiderivative arises as a natural and indispensable operator in this context.

Abstract:The transition from unitary, reversible von Neumann-Everett quantum processes to non-unitary, irreversible processes and measurements is explored through infinite tensor products interpreted as nested, chained, or iterated Wigner's friend scenarios. Infinite tensor products can disrupt unitary equivalence through sectorization and factorization, drawing parallels to concepts from real analysis, recursive mathematics, and statistical physics.

Abstract:We reconstruct the explicit formalism of qubit quantum theory from elementary rules on an observer's information acquisition. Our approach is purely operational: we consider an observer O interrogating a system S with binary questions and define S's state as O's “catalog of knowledge” about S. From the rules we derive the state spaces for N elementary systems and show that (a) they coincide with the set of density matrices over an N-qubit Hilbert space C2N; (b) states evolve unitarily under the group PSU(2N) according to the von Neumann evolution equation; and (c) O's binary questions correspond to projective Pauli operator measurements with outcome probabilities given by the Born rule. As a by-product, this results in a propositional formulation of quantum theory. Aside from offering an informational explanation for the theory's architecture, the reconstruction also unravels previously unnoticed structural insights. We show that, in a derived quadratic information measure, (d) qubits satisfy inequalities which bound the information content in any set of mutually complementary questions to 1 bit; and (e) maximal sets of mutually complementary questions for one and two qubits must carry precisely 1 bit of information in pure states. The latter relations constitute conserved informational charges which define the unitary groups and, together with their conservation conditions, the sets of pure quantum states. These results highlight information as a “charge of quantum theory” and the benefits of this informational approach. This work emphasizes the sufficiency of restricting to an observer's information to reconstruct the theory and completes the quantum reconstruction initiated in a companion paper (P. Höhn, arXiv:1412.8323).

Quantifying High-Order Interdependencies in Entangled Quantum States

Abstract:Here, we leverage recent advances in information theory to develop a novel method to characterise the dominant character of the high-order dependencies of quantum systems. To this end, we introduce the Q-information: an information-theoretic measure capable of distinguishing quantum states dominated by synergy or redundancy. We illustrate the measure by investigating the properties of paradigmatic entangled Qubit states and find that -- in contrast to classical systems -- quantum systems need at least four variables to exhibit high-order properties. Furthermore, our results reveal that unitary evolution can radically affect the internal information organisation in a way that strongly depends on the corresponding Hamiltonian. Overall, the Q-information sheds light on novel aspects of the internal organisation of quantum systems and their time evolution, opening new avenues for studying several quantum phenomena and related technologies.

Relativistic Quantum Information from Unequal-Time QFT Correlation Functions

Abstract:This paper continues on the program of developing a relativistic quantum information theory in terms of unequal-time correlation functions in quantum field theory (QFT)[<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2208.03696" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2208.03696">arXiv:2208.03696</a>]. Here, we focus on the definition of quantum resources from the irreducibly quantum behavior contained in the correlation functions of a QFT. We explain how set-ups with $N$ particle detectors probe the information in the high order field correlation functions. Our main object is the associated hierarchy of probability densities of $N$-detector events. We show that classical probabilistic hierarchies are subject to two conditions: Kolmogorov additivity and measurement independence. QFT violates those conditions, and the degree of violation enables us to define novel quantum resources. We give specific examples in set-ups where the main observables are the times of particle detection events. The new resources capture instances of irreducibly quantum behavior differ from the quantum behavior encapsulated in Bell inequalities. An interesting byproduct of our analysis is a relativistic state reduction rule for particles detected through scattering.

Abstract:Information, in its communications sense, is a transactional property. If the received signals communicate choices made by the sender of the signals, then information has been transmitter by the sender to the receiver. Given this reality, the potential information in an unknown pure quantum state should be non-zero. We examine transactional quantum information, which unlike von Neumann entropy, depends on the mutuality of the relationship between the sender and the receiver, associating information with an unknown pure state. The information that can be obtained from a pure state in repeated experiments is potentially infinite.

Abstract:This essay constitutes a review of the information geometric approach to renormalization developed in the recent works of Bény and Osborne as well as a detailed work-through of some of their contents. A noncommutative generalization of information geometry allows one to treat quantum state distinguishability in geometric terms with an intuitive empirical interpretation, allowing for an information theoretic prescription of renormalization which incorporates both the condensed matter and quantum field theoretic approaches.

Abstract:In this paper, I try once again to cause some good-natured trouble. The issue remains, when will we ever stop burdening the taxpayer with conferences devoted to the quantum foundations? The suspicion is expressed that no end will be in sight until a means is found to reduce quantum theory to two or three statements of crisp physical (rather than abstract, axiomatic) significance. In this regard, no tool appears better calibrated for a direct assault than quantum information theory. Far from a strained application of the latest fad to a time-honored problem, this method holds promise precisely because a large part--but not all--of the structure of quantum theory has always concerned information. It is just that the physics community needs reminding. This paper, though taking quant-ph/0106166 as its core, corrects one mistake and offers several observations beyond the previous version. In particular, I identify one element of quantum mechanics that I would not label a subjective term in the theory--it is the integer parameter D traditionally ascribed to a quantum system via its Hilbert-space dimension.

Abstract:The concept of positively and negatively compatible null vectors arises in the study of Clifford geometric algebras with a Lorentz-Minkowski metric. In previous works, the basic properties of such algebras have been set down in terms of a new principle of quantum duality. In the present work, the same structure is studied in terms of real and complex quantum integers, which generalize the real and complex number systems. It seems natural to identify a qubit as a pair of compatible null vectors; the up state of the qubit being their sum, and the down state being their difference. Basic identities are developed to make calculations routine, and two different representations of the symmetric group are given.

Abstract:The existence of observables that are incompatible or not jointly measurable is a characteristic feature of quantum mechanics, which lies at the root of a number of nonclassical phenomena, such as uncertainty relations, wave-particle dual behavior, Bell-inequality violation, and contextuality. However, no intuitive criterion is available for determining the compatibility of even two (generalized) observables, despite the overarching importance of this problem and intensive efforts of many researchers. Here we introduce an information theoretic paradigm together with an intuitive geometric picture for decoding incompatible observables, starting from two simple ideas: Every observable can only provide limited information and information is monotonic under data processing. By virtue of quantum estimation theory, we introduce a family of universal criteria for detecting incompatible observables and a natural measure of incompatibility, which are applicable to arbitrary number of arbitrary observables. Based on this framework, we derive a family of universal measurement uncertainty relations, provide a simple information theoretic explanation of quantitative wave-particle duality, and offer new perspectives for understanding Bell nonlocality, contextuality, and quantum precision limit.

Abstract:The von Neumann entropy of a k-body-reduced density matrix γ k quantifies the entanglement between k quantum particles and the remaining ones. In this paper, we rigorously prove general properties of this entanglement entropy as a function of k; it is concave for all 1 ⩽ k ⩽ N and non-decreasing until the midpoint k ⩽ ⌊ N / 2 ⌋ . The results hold for indistinguishable quantum particles and are independent of the statistics.

Abstract:Quantum 8, 1489 (2024). https://doi.org/10.22331/q-2024-10-02-1489 Investigations of the boundary of the quantum correlation set have gained increased attention in recent years. This is done through the derivation of quantum Bell inequalities, which are related to Tsirelson's problem and have significant applications in device-independent (DI) information processing. However, determining quantum Bell inequalities is a notoriously difficult task and only isolated examples are known. In this paper, we present families of (almost-)quantum Bell inequalities and highlight four foundational and DI applications. Firstly, it is known that quantum correlations on the non-signaling boundary are of crucial importance in the task of DI randomness extraction from weak sources. In the practical Bell scenario of two players with two -outcome measurements, we derive quantum Bell inequalities that demonstrate a separation between the quantum boundary and certain portions of the boundaries of the no-signaling polytope of dimension up to , extending previous results from nonlocality distillation and the collapse of communication complexity. Secondly as an immediate by-product, we give a general proof of Aumann's Agreement theorem for quantum systems as well as the almost-quantum correlations, which implies Aumann's agreement theorem is a reasonable physical principle in the context of epistemics to pick out both quantum theory and almost-quantum correlations from general no-signaling theories. Thirdly, we present a family of quantum Bell inequalities in the two players with binary measurements scenarios, that we prove serve to self-test the two-qubit singlet and the corresponding measurements. Interestingly, this claim generalizes the result for discovered by Tsirelson-Landau-Masanes and shows an improvement over the state-of-the-art Device-Independent Randomness-Amplification (DIRA). Lastly, we use our quantum Bell inequalities to derive the general form of the principle of no advantage in nonlocal computation, which is an information-theoretic principle that serves to characterize the quantum correlation set.

Noncommutative Number Systems for Quantum Information

Abstract:Dirac talked about q-numbers versus c-numbers. Quantum observables are q-number variables that generally do not commute among themselves. He was proposing to have a generalized form of numbers as elements of a noncommutative algebra. That was Dirac's appreciation of the mathematical properties of the physical quantities as presented in Heisenberg's new quantum theory. After all, the familiar real, or complex, number system only came into existence through the history of mathematics. Values of physical quantities having a commutative product is an assumption that is not compatible with quantum physics. The revolutionary idea of Heisenberg and Dirac was pulled back to a much more conservative setting by the work of Schrödinger, followed by Born and Bohr. What Bohr missed is that the real number values we obtained from our measurements are only a consequence of the design of the kind of experiments and our using real numbers to calibrate the output scales of our apparatus. It is only our modeling of the information obtained about the physical quantities rather than what Nature dictates. We have proposed an explicit notion of definite noncommutative values of observables that gives a picture of quantum mechanics as realistic as the classical theory. In this article, we illustrate how matrices can be taken as noncommutative (q-)numbers serving as the values of physical quantities, each to be seen as a piece of quantum information. Our main task is to clarify the subtle issues involved in setting up a conventional scheme assigning matrices as values to the physical quantities.
