Abstract:Recent artificial intelligence (AI) advancements in cardiovascular care offer potential enhancements in diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. Innovations to date focus on automating measurements, enhancing image quality, and detecting diseases using novel methods. Applications span wearables, electrocardiograms, echocardiography, angiography, genetics, and more. AI models detect diseases from electrocardiograms at accuracy not previously achieved by technology or human experts, including reduced ejection fraction, valvular heart disease, and other cardiomyopathies. However, AI's unique characteristics necessitate rigorous validation by addressing training methods, real-world efficacy, equity concerns, and long-term reliability. Despite an exponentially growing number of studies in cardiovascular AI, trials showing improvement in outcomes remain lacking. A number are currently underway. Embracing this rapidly evolving technology while setting a high evaluation benchmark will be crucial for cardiology to leverage AI to enhance patient care and the provider experience.

Abstract:This review explores the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in interventional radiotherapy (IRT), emphasizing its potential to streamline workflows and enhance patient care. Through a systematic analysis of 78 relevant papers spanning from 2002 to 2024, we identified significant advancements in contouring, treatment planning, outcome prediction, and quality assurance. AI-driven approaches offer promise in reducing procedural times, personalizing treatments, and improving treatment outcomes for oncological patients. However, challenges such as clinical validation and quality assurance protocols persist. Nonetheless, AI presents a transformative opportunity to optimize IRT and meet evolving patient needs.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is based on theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. In this context, deep learning is a family of computational methods that allow an algorithm to program itself by learning from a large set of examples that demonstrate the desired behavior. Application of these methods to medical imaging can assist pathologists in the detection of cancer subtype, gene mutations and/or metastases for applying appropriate therapies. The purpose of this study is to show the emerging application of AI in medical imaging to detect lung and breast cancer. Moreover, this study shows the comparative evolutionary pathways of this emerging technology for three critical cancers: lung, breast and thyroid. A main finding of this study is the recognition that, since the late 1990, the sharp increase of technological trajectories of AI technology applied in cancer imaging seems to be driven by high rates of mortality of some types of cancer (e.g., lung and breast) in order to find new techniques for a more accurate detection, characterization and monitoring as well as to apply efficiently anticancer therapies that increase the progression-free survival of patients: the so-called mortality-driven AI technological trajectories. Results also suggest that this new technology can generate a technological paradigm shift for diagnostic assessment of any cancer type. However, application of these methods to medical imaging requires further assessment and validation to assist pathologists to increase the efficiency of their workflow in both routine tasks and critical cases of diagnostics.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform every facet of cardiovascular practice and research. The exponential rise in technology powered by AI is defining new frontiers in cardiovascular care, with innovations that span novel diagnostic modalities, new digital native biomarkers of disease, and high-performing tools evaluating care quality and prognosticating clinical outcomes. These digital innovations promise expanded access to cardiovascular screening and monitoring, especially among those without access to high-quality, specialized care historically. Moreover, AI is propelling biological and clinical discoveries that will make future cardiovascular care more personalized, precise, and effective. The review brings together these diverse AI innovations, highlighting developments in multimodal cardiovascular AI across clinical practice and biomedical discovery, and envisioning this new future backed by contemporary science and emerging discoveries. Finally, we define the critical path and the safeguards essential to realizing this AI-enabled future that helps achieve optimal cardiovascular health and outcomes for all.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is a nontechnical, popular term that refers to machine learning of various types but most often to deep neural networks. Cardiology is at the forefront of AI in medicine. For this review, we searched PubMed and MEDLINE databases with no date restriction using search terms related to AI and cardiology. Articles were selected for inclusion on the basis of relevance. We highlight the major achievements in recent years in nearly all areas of cardiology and underscore the mounting evidence suggesting how AI will take center stage in the field. Artificial intelligence requires a close collaboration among computer scientists, clinical investigators, clinicians, and other users in order to identify the most relevant problems to be solved. Best practices in the generation and implementation of AI include the selection of ideal data sources, taking into account common challenges during the interpretation, validation, and generalizability of findings, and addressing safety and ethical concerns before final implementation. The future of AI in cardiology and in medicine in general is bright as the collaboration between investigators and clinicians continues to excel.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing society and healthcare, offering new possibilities for precision medicine. Immunotherapy in oncology (IO) has similarly transformed cancer treatment through novel mechanisms of therapeutic action, but has also led to atypical response patterns that challenge traditional methods for response evaluation. This editorial explores the role of AI in addressing these challenges through the development of new biomarkers for precise disease characterization, and in particular those built on imaging for the early response assessment of patients diagnosed with cancer and treated with IO. Properly leveraged AI-based techniques could herald a new era of precision medicine guided by non-invasive, imaging-based disease evaluation.

Abstract:Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality among women and men, in developed countries, despite the public health interventions including tobacco-free campaigns, screening and early detection methods, recent therapeutic advances, and ongoing intense research on novel antineoplastic modalities. Targeting oncogenic driver mutations and immune checkpoint inhibition has indeed revolutionized NSCLC treatment, yet there still remains the unmet need for robust and standardized predictive biomarkers to accurately inform clinical decisions. Artificial intelligence (AI) represents the computer-based science concerned with large datasets for complex problem-solving. Its concept has brought a paradigm shift in oncology considering its immense potential for improved diagnosis, treatment guidance, and prognosis. In this review, we present the current state of AI-driven applications on NSCLC management, with a particular focus on radiomics and pathomics, and critically discuss both the existing limitations and future directions in this field. The thoracic oncology community should not be discouraged by the likely long road of AI implementation into daily clinical practice, as its transformative impact on personalized treatment approaches is undeniable.

Abstract:The emergence of immunotherapy (IO), and more recently intratumoral IO presents a novel approach to cancer treatment which can enhance immune responses while allowing combination therapy and reducing systemic adverse events. These techniques are intended to change the therapeutic paradigm of oncology care, and means that traditional assessment methods are inadequate, underlining the importance of adopting innovative approaches. Artificial intelligence (AI) with machine learning algorithms and radiomics are promising approaches, offering new insights into patient care by analyzing complex imaging data to identify biomarkers to refine diagnosis, guide interventions, predict treatment responses, and adapt therapeutic strategies. In this editorial, we explore how integrating these technologies could revolutionize personalized oncology. We discuss their potential to enhance the survival and quality of life of patients treated with intratumoral IO by improving treatment effectiveness and minimizing side effects, potentially reshaping practice guidelines. We also identify areas for future research and review clinical trials to confirm the efficacy of these promising approaches.

Abstract:Recent Artificial Intelligence (AI) advancements in cardiovascular care offer potential enhancements in effective diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. Over 600 Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved clinical AI algorithms now exist, with 10% focusing on cardiovascular applications, highlighting the growing opportunities for AI to augment care. This review discusses the latest advancements in the field of AI, with a particular focus on the utilization of multimodal inputs and the field of generative AI. Further discussions in this review involve an approach to understanding the larger context in which AI-augmented care may exist, and include a discussion of the need for rigorous evaluation, appropriate infrastructure for deployment, ethics and equity assessments, regulatory oversight, and viable business cases for deployment. Embracing this rapidly evolving technology while setting an appropriately high evaluation benchmark with careful and patient-centered implementation will be crucial for cardiology to leverage AI to enhance patient care and the provider experience.

Abstract:Advancements in oncology, especially with the era of precision oncology, is resulting in a paradigm shift in cancer care. Indeed, innovative technologies, such as artificial intelligence, are paving the way towards enhanced diagnosis, prevention, and personalised treatments as well as novel drug discoveries. Despite excellent progress, the emergence of resistant cancers has curtailed both the pace and extent to which we can advance. By combining both their understanding of the fundamental biological mechanisms and technological advancements such as artificial intelligence and data science, cancer researchers are now beginning to address this. Together, this will revolutionise cancer care, by enhancing molecular interventions that may aid cancer prevention, inform clinical decision making, and accelerate the development of novel therapeutic drugs. Here, we will discuss the advances and approaches in both artificial intelligence and precision oncology, presented at the 59th Irish Association for Cancer Research annual conference.

Abstract:The last decade has witnessed a paradigm shift in cancer therapy, from non-specific cytotoxic chemotherapies to agents targeting specific molecular mechanisms. Nonetheless, cardiovascular toxicity of cancer therapies remains an important concern. This is particularly relevant given the significant improvement in survival of solid and haematological cancers achieved in the last decades. Cardio-oncology is a subspecialty of medicine focusing on the identification and prevention of cancer therapy–related cardiovascular toxicity (CTR-CVT). This review will examine the new definition of CTR-CVT and guiding principles for baseline cardiovascular assessment and risk stratification before cancer therapy, providing take-home messages for non-specialized cardiologists.
