Abstract:In this paper, a new refractive index sensor based on Fano resonance is introduced. It is mainly composed of two parts: a metal–insulator–metal as a base waveguide and an annular resonant cavity with a double notch and a double convex circle as a coupling structure. The sensing characteristics of the design are investigated via finite element calculations. The influence of the remaining structure parameters on the system’s sensing performance and the relationship between the wavelength corresponding to the Fano trough and the refractive index are also investigated. Furthermore, the structure is applied to refractive index sensors, resulting in a type with a sensitivity of 2740 nm/RIU and a figure of merit of 52.69.

Abstract:This study conducts an in-depth discussion on the Fano resonance phenomenon and its application in optical sensors. A circular split ring was proposed. By designing a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structure with specific geometric parameters, we successfully excited the Fano resonance, which produced a unique asymmetric Fano through the coupling of discrete and continuous states. Resonance transmission spectroscopy. The sensitivity of Fano resonance is extremely sensitive to changes in structural parameters. This characteristic provides a theoretical basis for the development of highly sensitive optical sensors. The simulation results show that by optimizing the structural parameters, high sensitivity Fano resonance characteristics can be obtained, further enhancing the performance of the optical sensor. The calculated sensitivity is as high as 1250 nm/RIU, and the figure of merit (FOM) reaches 54, indicating that the designed MIM waveguide structure has excellent sensing capabilities. This study not only demonstrates the potential of Fano resonance in improving sensor sensitivity, but also provides valuable guidance for the design and development of future optical sensors.

Fano resonance in metallic grating via strongly coupled subwavelength resonators

Abstract:We investigate the Fano resonance in grating structures by using coupled resonators. The grating consists of a perfectly conducting slab with periodically arranged subwavelength slit holes, where inside each period, a pair of slits sit very close to each other. The slit holes act as resonators and are strongly coupled. It is shown rigorously that there exist two groups of resonances corresponding to poles of the scattering problem. One sequence of resonances have imaginary part on the order of $\varepsilon$, where $\varepsilon$ is the size of the slit aperture, while the other sequence have imaginary part on the order of $\varepsilon^2$. When coupled with the incident wave at resonant frequencies, the narrow-band resonant scattering induced by the latter will interfere with the broader background resonant radiation induced by the former. The interference of these two resonances generates the Fano type transmission anomaly, which persists in the whole radiation continuum of the grating structure as long as the slit aperture size is small compared to the incident wavelength.

Abstract:In order to optimize the sensitivity and detection accuracy of Fano resonance optical sensors, a sensing model of graphene-grating composite micro-nanostructure with high sensing performance is proposed based on the optical properties of graphene and grating. By studying the reflection spectra and field distribution characteristics of the structure, the sensing mechanism of Fano resonance generated by the structure is elaborated, and the parameters affecting the Fano resonance sensing performance are analyzed to enhance the Fano resonance sensing performance by optimizing the structural parameters, and the Fano resonance reflection spectral curve with high-sensitivity and high-quality factor (FOM) value is obtained. The results show that when the grating period P = 300 nm, the grating height T1 = 110 nm, and the silver film thickness T2 = 30 nm, the sensitivity of the structure is 980 nm/RIU and the quality factor FOM is 770RIU−1 by changing the refractive index of the material to be measured.

Abstract:Fano resonances are numerically predicted in an ultracompact plasmonic structure, comprising a metal-isolator-metal (MIM) waveguide side-coupled with two identical stub resonators. This phenomenon can be well explained by the analytic model and the relative phase analysis based on the scattering matrix theory. In sensing applications, the sensitivity of the proposed structure is about 1.1 x 10(3) nm/RIU and its figure of merit is as high as 2 x 10(5) at lambda=980 nm, which is due to the sharp asymmetric Fano line-shape with an ultra-low transmittance at this wavelength. This plasmonic structure with such high figure of merits and footprints of only about 0.2 mu m(2) may find important applications in the on-chip nano-sensors.

Abstract:In this study, for the first time a near full‐lineshape selectivity of the Fano resonance is demonstrated in two isolated tuning dimensions of the frequency and transverse space. With a carefully designed waveguide‐taper coupled micro‐ring resonator structure and the assistance with the grating‐coupler, arbitrary lineshapes including the Lorentzian‐dip, asymmetric Fano peak, or electromagnetically‐induced‐transparency (EIT)‐like peak can be obtained at a specific resonance wavelength in the whole C‐band. Corresponding to the different phase‐shifts of the interference modes, the whispering gallery mode resonator‐based Fano resonance exhibits a variety of unique spectral lineshapes that can be applied to sensing, optical signal processing, and so on. However, most approaches to lineshape tuning aim to alter the propagation phase‐shift or coupling strength, and generally suffer from relatively low efficiency and limited tuning range. In this paper, with a carefully designed waveguide‐taper coupled micro‐ring resonator structure and the assistance with the grating‐coupler, for the first time a near full‐lineshape selectivity of the Fano resonance is demonstrated in two isolated tuning dimensions of the frequency and transverse space, which means arbitrary lineshapes including the Lorentzian‐dip, asymmetric Fano peak or electromagnetically‐induced‐transparency (EIT)‐like peak can be obtained at a specific resonance wavelength in the whole C‐band. In addition to the different types of line shapes, the extinction ratio can also be enhanced by dynamically tuning the coupling position. This research provides an efficient approach to manipulate the transmission spectra of the Fano resonance, which is of great importance in promoting its further applications on integrated photonics platforms.

Abstract:Fano resonance with asymmetric line shape is very promising in many applications such as optical switching, sensing, slow light, laser. Fano resonances based on some integrated structures have been demonstrated on the silicon on insulator platform. However, the extinction ratios and slope rates of the most proposed integrated Fano resonances are relatively low, which limits their applications. In this paper, a tunable silicon nitride coupled resonator optical waveguide (CROW) embedded in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is proposed to achieve Fano resonance. Benefiting from fine tuning supported by the low thermo-optic coefficient of the silicon nitride optical waveguide, the optical amplitudes and phases in the two arms of the MZI were accurately adjusted to achieve destructive interference, which gives an ultra-high extinction ratio. Furthermore, high quality factor CROW, supported by the native low loss silicon nitride optical waveguide, greatly shrinks the resonance bandwidth. Combining the above two superiorities, a Fano resonance with a very high extinction ratio of up to 57 dB and slope rate as high as 8.1 × 104 dB/nm was obtained, which is an order of magnitude larger than the reported integrated Fano resonances. We believe that the proposed structure would be a promising candidate for high-performance switching and high-sensitivity sensing.
Analysis of formation and evolution of double Fano resonance in sub-wavelength dielectric grating/MDM Waveguide/periodic photonic crystal

Abstract:Based on the diffraction principle and the mode coupling theory, a composite micro-nano structure of sub-wavelength dielectric grating/ metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguide/periodic photonic crystal is proposed. Combined with the angle spectrum of reflection, the transmission characteristics of the surface plasmon and the generation mechanism of double Fano resonance at different incident angles and fixed wavelength are analyzed. The studies show that the physical mechanism of double Fano resonance is that the surface plasmon resonance generated at the interface of sub-wavelength dielectric grating and upper metal Ag film, and the waveguide mode resonance occurring in the MDM waveguide, provide the independently tunable double discrete states, under the condition of satisfying wave vector matching, which can be respectively coupled in the near field with the continuous state formed by the photonic band gap effect in the photonic crystal, thereby achieving the double Fano resonance. Then the influence of the structural parameters on the double Fano characteristics is analyzed quantitatively, and the evolution law of the double Fano resonance is explored by the change of the reflection spectra of resonance curves. The results show that the tuning between double Fano resonance curves and the resonance angles can be realized by changing the structural parameters. And under optimal conditions, the figure of merit (FOM) values of FR a and FR b in resonance A region can be as high as 460.0 and <inline-formula><tex-math id="M3">\begin{document}$ 4.00 \times {10^4} $\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M3.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M3.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula>, and the FOM values of FR a and FR b in resonance B region can be as high as 269.2 and <inline-formula><tex-math id="M4">\begin{document}$ 2.22 \times {10^4} $\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M4.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="3-20211491_M4.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula>. The structure can provide an effective theoretical reference for designing the refractive index sensors based on Fano resonances.

Abstract:In this paper, a theoretical demonstration is given of nanoscale range finding by exciting Fano resonance in coupled gratings. Metallic ridges induce oscillation mode, whose interference with surface plasmon polartions generate narrow Fano resonance. The concept of hybridization is employed to understand the coupling effect of surface plasmon polartions and the oscillation due to metallic ridges. Fano behavior in this structure is captured by using the temporal coupled-mode theory. The gained fundamental understanding opens up new ways to control nanoscale spacing distances and tailor Fano resonance, thus facilitating rational design of nanosensors to improve the performance of nanomotion control systems.
Fano Resonance with High Local Field Enhancement under Azimuthally Polarized Excitation

Abstract:Being an enabling technology for applications such as ultrasensitive biosensing and surface enhanced spectroscopy, enormous research interests have been focused on further boosting the local field enhancement at Fano resonance. Here, we demonstrate a plasmonic Fano resonance resulting from the interference between a narrow magnetic dipole mode and a broad electric dipole mode in a split-ring resonator (SRR) coupled to a nanoarc structure. Strikingly, when subjected to an azimuthally polarized beam (APB) excitation, the intensity enhancement becomes more than 60 times larger than that for a linearly polarized beam (LPB). We attribute this intensity enhancement to the improved conversion efficiency between the excitation and magnetic dipole mode along with improved near-field coupling. The APB excited Fano structure is further used as a nanoruler and beam misalignment sensor, due to the high sensitivity of intensity enhancement and scattering spectra to structure irregularities and excitation beam misalignment. Interestingly, we find that, regardless of the presence of structural translations, the proposed structure still maintains over 60 times better intensity enhancement under APB excitation compared to LPB excitation. Moreover, even if the APB excitation is somewhat misaligned, our Fano structure still manages to give a larger intensity enhancement than its counterpart excited by LPB.

Abstract:It is shown theoretically and numerically that a simple gratings-based plasmonic structure can support a nearly-degenerate double Fano resonance which can lead to a relatively narrow spectral line shape. The double-resonance spectral location and line-shape are controllable by either adjusting the periodicity and unit-cell of the gratings or by adjusting the angle of incidence of the incoming radiation.

Abstract:Fano resonance with high Q-factor is considered to play an important role in the field of refractive index sensing. In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally investigate a refractive index sensor with high performance, realizing a new approach to excite multiple Fano resonances of high Q-factor by introducing an asymmetric parameter to generate a quasi-bound state in the continuum (BIC). Combined with the electromagnetic properties, the formation mechanism of Fano resonances in multiple different excitation modes is analyzed and the resonant modes of the three resonant peaks are analyzed as toroidal dipole (TD), magnetic quadrupole (MQ), and magnetic dipole (MD), respectively. The simulation results show that the proposed metastructure has excellent sensing properties with a Q-factor of 3668, sensitivity of 350 nm/RIU, and figure of merit (FOM) of 1000. Furthermore, the metastructure has been fabricated and investigated experimentally, and the result shows that its maximum Q-factor, sensitivity and FOM can reach 634, 233 nm/RIU and 115, respectively. The proposed metastructure is believed to further contribute to the development of biosensors, nonlinear optics, and lasers.

Abstract:The Fano resonance demonstrates excellent performance due to its narrow asymmetrical spectral line shape, and its sensitivity to structure and material parameter changes. Compared to conventional Fano resonances, the Fano resonance generated by the magnetic dipole is more advantageous because of its high absorption and low loss. In this study, we propose an Au nanosphere dimer–dielectric–gold film sandwiched structure that supports the magnetic Fano resonance mode. And the Fano resonance can be efficiently tuned from visible to near-infrared wavelength by changing the size of the gold nanospheres and the thickness of the dielectric layer. Different from the single gold nanosphere–dielectric–film structure, the results suggest that the proposed structure is sensitive to the polarization direction of the excitation light. Considering the above characteristics, the proposed structure can be applied in multi-band sensing, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and dynamically adjustable optical switches.

Abstract:In this study, a baffled metal – insulator – metal (MIM) waveguide coupled with a whispering gallery mode resonator (WGMR) is proposed. This structure could excite quadruple Fano resonances. The asymmetric Fano resonance transmittance spectrum and the electric field at the resonance peak were numerically simulated using the finite difference time domain method. The obtained data were fitted using the multimode interference coupled mode theory. The number of Fano resonance peaks was tuned by the outer radius of the WGMR. With other geometric parameters unchanged, the number of Fano resonance peaks increased with increasing outer radius of the WGMR. When the ring width was fixed, the structure could excite multiple Fano resonances within a certain outer radius range. This structure was used for refractive index sensing and its sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM) were 3004 nm/RIU and 3.14× 104 in a gas environment, respectively. Therefore, the proposed structure can excite multiple Fano resonances and achieve a high sensitivity and FOM, providing a theoretical basis for micro and nano applications.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. Fano resonance sensors based on metal–insulator–metal (MIM) waveguide have potential applications in fields such as biology, chemistry, and the environment. Here, a nanosensor based on Fano resonance in an MIM-based isosceles triangular resonator system is proposed and numerically studied by finite element method. Simulation results show that the Fano peak can be easily tuned by adjusting the scale factor and the refractive index within the resonator. Furthermore, we thoroughly analyze the impact of the apex angle, rotation angle, and vertical displacement of the resonator on the transmission spectrum. Finally, the sensing characteristics of the proposed structure are optimized and analyzed, and a high-performance plasmonic sensor with a sensitivity of 1100[math]nm/RIU and the maximum figure of merit of [math] is obtained. The distinctive attributes of our suggested structure are applicable in the realization of various integrated components for the development of multifunctional high-performance nanophotonics devices.

Abstract:AbstractThe rapid developments in nanotechnology and plasmonics allow the manipulation of light at nanometer scales, such as light propagation and resonances. Differing from the symmetric Lorentzian‐like profiles in the conventional resonances, Fano resonances, which originate from the interference of different resonant modes, exhibit obviously asymmetric spectral profiles. Based on lineshape engineering, the Fano resonances with sharp asymmetric profiles exhibit a small linewidth and a high spectral contrast by exploiting different mechanisms and designing various metallic nanostructures. Both of the above properties in the sharp Fano resonances have significant applications in nanoscale plasmonic sensors and modulators. This review summarizes the underlying mechanism of the Fano resonances in various metallic nanostructures. Then, practical applications of the Fano resonances in nanoscale plasmonic sensing and modulation are reviewed. At last, the development and challenges of plasmonic sensing and modulation based on Fano resonances are discussed.

Abstract:Hybrid graphene-metal gratings with tunable Fano resonance are proposed and theoretically investigated in THz band. The grating contains alternately aligned metal and graphene stripes, which could be viewed as the superposition of two kinds of gratings with the same period. Due to different material properties, the resonance coupling between the metal and graphene parts forms typical Fano-type transmitting spectra. The related physical mechanism is studied by inspecting the induced dipole moment and local surface charge distributions at different wavelengths. Both of the resonance amplitude and frequency of the structure thus are adjustable by tuning graphene's Fermi energy and the grating's geometrical parameters. Furthermore, the Fano-type spectra are also quite sensitive to environmental indices, which supply another kind of tunability. All these features should have promising applications in tunable THz filters, switches, and modulators.

Abstract:The interaction between plasmonic resonances, sharp modes, and light in nanoscale plasmonic systems often leads to Fano interference effects. This occurs because the plasmonic excitations are usually spectrally broad and the characteristic narrow asymmetric Fano line-shape results upon interaction with spectrally sharper modes. We investigate a plasmonic waveguide system using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, which consists of a metal-insulator-metal waveguide coupled with a rectangle and a ring cavity. Numerical simulations results show that the sharp and asymmetric Fano-line shapes can be created in the waveguide. Fano resonance strongly depends on the structural parameters. This has important applications in highly sensitive and multiparameter sensing in the complicated environments.

Abstract:Observation of the Fano line shapes is essential to understand properties of the Fano resonance in different physical systems. We explore a tunable Fano resonance by tuning the phase shift in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on a single-mode nano-optomechanical cavity. The Fano resonance is resulted from the optomechanically induced transparency caused by a nano-mechanical resonator and can be tuned by applying an optomechanical MZI. By tuning the phase shift in one arm of the MZI, we can observe the periodically varying line shapes of the Fano resonance, which represents an elaborate manipulation of the Fano resonance in the nanoscale optomechanics.
