Abstract:High-spin conjugated radicals have great potential in magnetic materials and organic spintronics. However, to obtain high-spin conjugated radicals is still quite challenging due to their poor stability. We report the successful synthesis and isolation of a stable triplet conjugated diradical, 10,12-diaryldiindeno[1,2-b:2 ',1 '-e]pyrazine (m-DIP). With the m-xylylene analogue skeleton containing electron-deficient sp(2)-nitrogen atoms, m-DIP displays significant aromatic character within its pyrazine ring and its spin density mainly delocalizes on the meta-pyrazine unit, making it a triplet ground state conjugated diradical. Our work provides an effective "spin density tuning" strategy for stable high-spin conjugated radicals.
Reversible Self-Assembling of Boryl Radical Anions to Their Diradicals with Tunable Singlet Ground States

Abstract:Two novel boron-centered diradicals based on dimesitylpyridine borane (1) were synthesized by the self-assembling of the corresponding radical sodium and potassium salts, respectively. The sodium diradical was obtained by re-dissolving the crystals of the radical salt 1Na in toluene, while the potassium diradical was directly obtained by the reduction of 1 with potassium in THF. The diradicals could be converted back to their radical anions in THF solution, forming a reversible process. EPR spectroscopy and SQUID measurements, together with theoretical calculations, show that the diradicals have singlet ground states with excited triplet states. Their singlet-triplet energy gaps are tunable with metals.
An Air-Stable Carbon-Centered Triradical with a Well-Addressable Quartet Ground State

Abstract:Organic polyradicals with a high-spin ground state and quantum magnetic properties suitable for spin manipulation are valuable materials for diverse innovative technologies, including quantum devices. However, the typically high reactivity and low stability of conventional polyradicals present a major obstacle to such applications. In this study, a highly stable carbon-centered triradical TR with a quartet ground state and excellent stability (τ1/2 of ∼90 days in air-saturated toluene at room temperature) is achieved, which shows apposite magnetic anisotropy and Zeeman splitting partition with favorable addressability. By virtue of the optimal stability, thorough structural and magnetic characterizations are realized. With X-ray crystallography unambiguously proving the molecular structure, the quartet ground state (ΔED-Q = 0.78 kcal/mol) is confirmed by the SQUID measurements, while the cw- and pulsed EPR techniques offer additional supportive evidence for the high-spin nature. Remarkably, owing to the easily attained magnetic anisotropy, selective excitations between different Zeeman splitting levels are successfully demonstrated with TR in its frozen toluene solution without the requirement for special alignment, which is unprecedented for organic polyradicals. Along with the millisecond spin-lattice relaxation and microsecond coherence time manifested by TR, this triradical is promising for potential coherent spin manipulation applications as a multienergy-level quantum information carrier.

Abstract:Diradicals, molecules with two unpaired electrons, are reactive intermediates that play an important role in many fields. Their defining feature is the energy difference between their singlet and triplet states, which provides direct information on the extent of their electron exchange interactions. Such knowledge is essential for understanding their diradical character, which is controllable internally by modification of the electronic and steric properties of the substituents. We now report that the energy gap of a diradical in the solid state can also be controlled by an external stimulus. The dication diradical of 4,4''-di(bisphenylamino)-p-terphenyl exhibits two singlet states with different exchange coupling constants at different temperatures as determined by SQUID and EPR measurements. The behavior is induced by the conformation change of the terphenyl bridge, the key structural unit of the species. The work presents an unprecedented instance of a thermally controllable singlet-triplet gap for a crystalline diradical and provides a novel diradical material relevant to the design of functional materials.

Abstract:Stable carbon-based polyradicals exhibiting strong spin-spin coupling and slow depolarization processes are particularly attractive functional materials. A new molecular motif synthesized by a convenient method that allows the integration of stable, high-spin radicals to (hetero)aromatic polycycles has been developed, as illustrated by a non-Kekule diradical showing a triplet ground state with long persistency (tau 1/2 approximate to 31 h) in air. Compared to the widely used 1,3-phenylene, the newly designed (diaza)pyrene-4,10-diyl moiety is for the first time demonstrated to confer ferromagnetic (FM) spin coupling, allowing delocalized non-disjoint SOMOs. With the X-ray crystallography unambiguously proving the diradical structure, the triplet ground state was thoroughly characterized. A large Delta ES-T of 1.1 kcal/mol, proving the strong FM coupling effect, was revealed consistently by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements and variable-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, while the zero-field splitting and triplet nutation characters were examined by continuous-wave and pulsed EPR spectroscopy. A millisecond spin-lattice relaxation time was also detected. The current study not only offers a new molecular motif enabling FM coupling between carbon-based spins, but more importantly presents a general method for installing stable polyradicals into functional pi-systems. A general method has been developed for installing stable polyradicals into polycyclic pi-systems, as illustrated by the formation of an air-stable, high-spin carbon-based diradical with a new ferromagnetic coupling motif of diazapyrene. The structure of the diradical was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, while the magnetic measurements provided unambiguous evidence for the high-spin ground state and a long spin relaxation process.+image

Abstract:Three bis(triarylamine) dications were isolated by using weakly coordinating anions. Their electronic structures in the ground state were investigated by various experiments in conjunction with theoretical calculations. The ground-state electronic structures of these species were tunable by substituent effects, with two of them as closed-shell singlets and one of them as an open-shell singlet in the solid state. The excited state of the latter is thermally accessible, indicated by EPR and SQUID measurements. The work provides a new and stable diradicaloid structure motif with an excited triplet sate.

Abstract:In this Feature Article, we highlight our recent efforts toward stable open-shell singlet diradicaloids and polyradicaloids. A brief review on the historical works in the area is introduced first, followed by discussion on the fundamental electronic and physical properties of open-shell singlet diradicaloids. Then, the structure-diradical character relationships based on our recently developed diradicaloids are presented. Next, the challenges and solutions toward stable polyradicaloids and 3D -conjugated diradicaloids are discussed. Finally, their preliminary material applications are introduced and a perspective view of the area is given.

Abstract:It is highly urgent to develop synthetic strategies to make new category of stable luminescent radicals with desired emission wavelength. In this study, we have isolated two dioxoborocyclic radicals (3 and 4) by a direct synthetic route. They were characterized by UV, EPR spectroscopy and SQUID measurements. Their structures were obtained by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. Both radicals produce blue‐photoluminescence (458 nm for 3 and 478 nm for 4) by radiative decay from higher excited states (D2/D3) to the ground state (D0) based on theoretical calculation, breaking Kasha rule. Abstract:High-spin organic radicals are notable for their unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties, but synthesizing stable high-spin systems is challenging due to their inherent reactivity. This study presents a novel strategy for designing stable high-spin polycyclic hydrocarbons (PHs) by incorporating allylic radical into fused aromatic benzenoid rings. To enhance stability, large steric hindrance groups with a synergistic captodative effect were added to the allylic radical centers. This approach was applied to synthesize derivatives of two open-shell all-benzenoid PHs: benzo[fg]tetracene (1) and dibenzo[fg,lm]heptacene (2). Both compounds exhibited excellent stability, with diradical 2 showing a half-life of up to 17.2 days under ambient conditions. Bond length analysis and theoretical calculations suggest that 1 and 2 predominantly feature Clar's aromatic sextet structures with embedded allylic radicals. Compound 2 was confirmed to have a triplet ground state through DFT calculations and experimental methods, including pulse EPR spectroscopy and SQUID measurements. This work introduces a new design strategy for stable high-spin hydrocarbons, paving the way for future developments in high-spin organic materials.

An Isolable Diboron-Centered Diradical with A Triplet Ground State

Abstract:Two new diboranes, 2,6-bis(BMes(2))mesitylene (1) and 3,3-bis(BMes(2))bimesitylene (3), were synthesized. Two-electron reduction of 1 with elemental potassium afforded the C-H activation product [(18-c-6)K(THF)(2)](2)(+)2(2-) bearing a BC3 four-membered ring as colorless crystals, whereas the reduction of 3 with potassium led to the isolation of [(18-c-6)K(THF)(2)](2)(+)3(2-..) as dark blue crystals. Both reduction products were characterized by structural and spectroscopic methods. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations revealed that the electron spin density of 3(2-..) mainly resides on the two boron nuclei and features a triplet ground state, which was confirmed by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements as well as theoretical calculations. 3(2-..) represents the first structurally characterized boron-centered diradical with a triplet ground state. In addition, the reactivity of [(18-c-6)K(THF)(2)](2)(+)3(2-..) toward PhSeSePh and nBu(3)SnH was investigated, which is consistent with its radical character.

Sulfone-Functionalized Chichibabin's Hydrocarbons: Stable Diradicaloids with Symmetry Breaking Charge Transfer Contributing to NIR Emission beyond 900 nm

Abstract:While monoradical emitters have emerged as a new route toward efficient organic light-emitting diodes, the luminescence property of organic diradicaloids is still scarcely explored. Herein, by devising a novel radical-radical coupling-based synthetic approach, we report a new class of sulfone-functionalized Chichibabin's hydrocarbon derivatives, SD-1-3, featuring varied substituent patterns and moderate to high diradical characters of 0.44-0.70, as highly stable diradicaloids with rarely seen NIR emission beyond 900 nm. Via comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigations, we reveal that the optoelectronic and magnetic properties of these materials are significantly tuned by the variations of substitutions (H/CF3/OMe) on the molecular skeletons. More importantly, quantum chemical computations indicate that the embedding of sulfone groups has contributed to a breaking of their quasi-C2 symmetry of these diradicaloid molecules and results in an excited-state charge transfer character. Therefore, a remarkably deep NIR emissive wavelength of up to 998 nm, together with a large Stokes shift (∼386 nm), is achieved for the CF3-based SD-2 molecule in tetrahydrofuran. To the best of our knowledge, such a luminescent wavelength of SD-2 has represented the longest wavelengths among the currently reported organic fluorescent radicals. Overall, our work not only establishes a new synthetic approach toward stable Chichibabin's hydrocarbons but also paves the way for designing NIR emissive open-shell materials with both fundamental understanding and feasible control of their luminescent properties.

Abstract:By using weakly coordinating anions we succeeded in the stabilization and isolation of two Würster’s blue-based diradicaloid dications with saturated spacers. Their geometries and electronic structures were investigated by various experiments in conjunction with DFT calculations. Both one-dimensional alkylate-bridged dications show considerable diradical character with spacer-dependent singlet-triplet energy gaps. One of them displays a much enhanced diradical character and could basically be viewed as a pure diradical with degeneracy of singlet and triplet states.
Double Spin with a Twist: Synthesis and Characterization of a Neutral Mixed-Valence Organic Stable Diradical

Abstract:A convenient design strategy opens access to neutral open-shell mixed-valence species via the redox transformation of charged stable precursors, i.e., the spiro-fused borate anions. We have implemented this strategy for the synthesis of the first neutral mixed-valence diradical: two neutral mixed-valence radical fragments were assembled via a twisted biphenyl bridge. The diradical is a crystalline solid obtained in almost quantitative yield by using a facile synthetic procedure. It is stable at room temperature in the triplet ground state with a very small singlet/triplet gap. This metal-free diradical can reversibly form five redox states. The diradical exhibits an intense IVCT band in the NIR region and can be assigned as a Class 2 Robin-Day MV (mixed valence) system with weakly interacting redox centers. Computations suggest that this diradical finds itself in a unique tug-of-war between two electron delocalization patterns, Kekulé and non-Kekulé, which gives rise to two geometric isomers that are close in energy but drastically different in spin distribution and polarity. Such bistable spin-systems should be intrinsically switchable and promising for the design of functional spin devices. The scope and limitations of the new redox-strategy for the neutral MV radicals were also tested on other types of spiro-fused borates, revealing structural factors responsible for the evolution from transient to persistent and then to stable radicals.

Abstract:In this work, a novel pi-extended thio[7]helicene scaffold was synthesized, where the alpha-position of the thiophene unit could be functionalized with bulky phenoxy radicals after considerable synthetic attempts. This open-shell helical diradical, ET7H-R, possesses high stability in the air, nontrivial pi conjugation, persistent chirality, and a high diradical character (y(0) of 0.998). The key feature is a predominant through-space spin-spin coupling (TSC) between two radicals at the helical terminals. Variable-temperature continuous-wave electron spin resonance (cw-ESR) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry in the solid state reveal a singlet ground state with a nearly degenerate triplet state of ET7H-R. These results highlight the significance of a stable helical diradicaloid as a promising platform for investigating intramolecular TSCs.

Abstract:Organic radicals display unique physical structures and could become next generation functional materials. However, design and synthesis of stable neutral radicals with a significant polyradical character has been an enormous challenge for chemists. In this work, we synthesized a series of stable 3,6-linked, kinetically blocked fluorenyl radical oligomers up to hexamer (FR-n, n = 1-6). Their ground-state geometric and electronic structures were systematically studied by various experimental methods including X-ray crystallographic analysis, variable temperature nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance, and superconducting quantum interference device measurements, supported by density functional theory and ab initio calculations. Moderate antiferromagnetic coupling between the fluorenyl radicals was observed, and moderate to large diradical and polyradical characters were calculated from dimer onward. Furthermore, their photophysical properties were estimated by steady-state, transient absorption, and two-photon absorption measurements, and their electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry/differential pulse voltammetry and spectro-electrochemical measurements. A clear chain length dependence of their optical, electrochemical, and magnetic properties was found for the oligomers with an odd or even number of spin centers, respectively.
Toward an Air-Stable Triradical with Strong Spin Coupling: Synthesis of Substituted Truxene-5,10,15-triyl

Abstract:With the aim to achieve air-stable polyradical species manifesting strong spin coupling, synthetic endeavors are made toward triradical molecules featuring a truxene-triyl skeleton. Commonly used steric-hindering side groups such as 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl and 9-anthracenyl are both found to be incompetent at stabilizing the targeted truxene triradical, which appears to be elusive from isolation and characterization. Nonetheless, singlecrystal structures of adducts formed by relevant radicals are obtained, which strongly suggests the transient existence of the designed triradicals. Finally, a truxene triradical comprising 1-anthracenyl along with two 9-anthracenyl substituents is successfully isolated and found to exhibit decent stability in air. We propose that because of the smaller dihedral angle assumed by 1-anthracenyl with respect to the plane of truxene-triyl, more effective pi-conjugation allows the spin density to be more widely delocalized and distributed to the anthracenyl side groups. Thus, higher stability is gained by the triradical molecule.
Highly Stable Organic Bisradicals Protected by Mechanical Bonds.

Abstract:Two new highly charged [2]catenanes-namely, mHe[2]C center dot 6PF(6) and mHo[2]C center dot 6PF(6) -were synthesized by exploiting radical host-guest templation between derivatives containing BIPY center dot+ radical cations and the meta analogue of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene). In contrast to related [2]catenanes that have been isolated as air-stable monoradicals, both mHe[2]C center dot 6PF(6) and mHo[2]C center dot 6PF(6) exist as air-stable singlet bisradicals, as evidenced by both X-ray crystallography in the solid state and EPR spectroscopy in solution. Electrochemical studies indicate that the first two reduction peaks of these two [2]catenanes are shifted significantly to more positive potentials, a feature which is responsible for their extraordinary stability in air. The mixed-valence nature of the mono- and bisradical states endows them with unique NIR absorption properties, e.g., NIR absorption bands for the mono- and bisradical states observed at similar to 1800 and similar to 1450 nm, respectively. These [2]catenanes are potentially useful in applications that include NIR photothermal conversion, UV-vis-NIR multiple-state electrochromic materials, and multiple-state memory devices. Our findings highlight the principle of "mechanical-bond-induced stabilization" as an efficient strategy for designing persistent organic radicals.

Abstract:This study presents the synthesis and characterization of a highly conjugated stable diradical molecule composed of a donor–acceptor coupling unit. The optical, electrochemical, and spintronic properties of this molecule were comprehensively investigated. Triphenylamine served as the electron donor, while 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole was utilized as the electron acceptor for constructing the backbone of the diradical molecule. Two pendant nitronyl nitroxide radicals were incorporated onto the triphenylamine moiety. A comparative study between our diradical molecule and a reference counterpart with only a donor group as the coupling unit revealed intriguing differences in optical properties and singlet-to-triplet energy gap. Our findings demonstrate that the D–A effect induces intramolecular charge polarization on the coupling unit, which subsequently influences the spin–spin interactions of the diradical molecules. Thus, our results offer novel insights into the effective preparation of fully conjugated and stable diradicals, as well as providing a convenient approach for tuning the spintronic and magnetic properties of diradical materials.
