Abstract:Given the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, new energy-efficient solutions can be adopted for construction and agricultural machinery. Such a solution is a digital hydraulic cylinder that uses several active areas and a constant pressure supply with which a gradual variation of the driving force can be obtained. Traditional hydraulic systems have high energy losses due to the need to direct and throttle the flow through different valves. The article presents simulations in the AMESim environment and laboratory experiments of a digital hydraulic cylinder with three active areas. Through numerical simulations, the authors aim to highlight the energy efficiency of a digital hydraulic cylinder compared to a hydraulic cylinder in a conventional drive.

Abstract:Tractors,as the main agricultural machinery,has a great impact on agricultural production.Quality and performance of tractor determine a country's agricultural level.The distributor,as the main components of tractor lift system,was analyzed and designed and a digital control scheme was put forward.The force-displacement integrated control performances of the distributor were simulated and experimented.The simulation and experimental results show that the designed distributor can meet the working demand and has simple structure.

Abstract:Digital hydraulic technology has emerged as a promising alternative to conventional hydraulic systems, offering several advantages such as improved energy efficiency, more precise control, and reduced complexity. In recent years, digital hydraulic technology applications have been widely researched in various engineering sectors, including aerospace, biomedical and industrial. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the recent advancements in digital hydraulic technology, focusing on the various applications and their benefits. The paper begins by introducing the two different branches of this innovative technology. Subsequently, it presents an overview of digital hydraulic technology applications, highlighting their specific advantages, particularly in biomedical, industrial and aeronautical sectors, when compared to conventional hydraulic technology. Finally, the paper addresses the challenges and limitations associated with digital hydraulic technology and discusses potential areas for future research and development.

Abstract:In the energy efficiency era, modern industry machinery demand now more than ever intelligent and efficient electronic control modules, in order to gradually increase their technical performances. Classic hydraulic driven machinery are complex and reliable but trying to reconfigure their schematic is a very hard to do process, in some cases impossible. Machine flexibility and energy efficiency are probably two of the most important concepts that govern the world of equipment – installation – machine design engineers. Solving this sort of demands certainly leads to a rapid increase in electronic control system complexity and designing new electro-hydraulic equipment that use modern concepts such as digital hydraulics. Nevertheless, complex electronic modules require adequate software development [1]. Referring to a narrower case, hydraulic P.E.T. waste presses, they are well acquainted for their productivity versus low cost classic hydraulics installation. Still, there remains another issue that needs to be taken into account: energy efficiency. In this paper, the authors have investigated the possibility of using the digital hydraulics concept in replacing classic electrohydraulic directional valves of a small capacity P.E.T. waste press from the energy consumption point of view. Also, there will be discussed main advantages and disadvantages of using digital hydraulics over classic hydraulics in the particular case of a P.E.T. waste press.

Abstract:The paper presents the results of the researches performed in order to find out the static and dynamic performances of some recent types of hybrid electrohydraulic servomechanisms. The new concept was generated by the needs of the modern aerospace technology called “flight by wire”, directed to the use of compact actuators composed mainly by a brushless motor driving a hydrostatic pump connected in a close loop with a hydraulic cylinder. The numerical simulations performed with Simcenter Amesim language pointed out the possibility of saving a lot of energy with this new concept, already used on civil airplanes and fighters. The new wave of autonomous driving generated a lot of combinations of electric and hydraulic components, according the peculiarities of applications. The authors studied the accuracy of the hybrid steering system of an articulated tractor based on a digital industrial servo valve combined with an ORBITROL standard unit. The structure of the last generation of the trucks hybrid steering systems was also studied, taking into account the real performances of each component. Finally, the effect of the strong penetration of the hybrid servo systems in the automotive manufacturing systems is assessed.

Abstract:The hydraulic load-sensing system is a more efficient system solution than constant pressure system in mobile machine. Abstract:This article addresses mainly questions about the roles of fluid systems, in particular of digital ones, in an “Industrie 4.0 (I4.0)” environment. There are three roles: the general machines’ subsystems/components’ role in machines of an I4.0 production system, the role of subsystems/components of machines which are produced under I4.0 conditions, and the manufacturing of fluid systems’ components in an I4.0 setting. These roles are discussed and examples of digital hydraulic solutions which fulfill these roles excellently are presented. They feature simplicity and robustness of hardware components and transfer of functionality to software. It is concluded that components and subsystems can support the successful realization of I4.0-type production systems decisively.

Abstract:In the last few years, the energetic efficiency of hydraulic systems has been widely discussed. One approach that has a particular potential is digital hydraulics. According to recent research, digital hydraulics has several potential advantages when compared with traditional technology, such as improved energy efficiency and the simplicity and robustness of its components. In this context, the main objective of this paper is to discuss the speed control of symmetrical actuators using digital hydraulic principles. It is proposed a hydraulic circuit configuration based on use of several fixed displacement units instead of one pump, on/off directional valves replacing flow control valves, and a specific control strategy. An energy management device is also proposed. This device allows the digital hydraulic system to operate in motor mode as well as store energy, therefore, improving the efficiency. The modelling of the hydraulic system is carried out by AMESim software and the control is implemented in the MATLAB software. The simulations were carried out using a co-simulation technique. Initially, the speed behaviour of the digital hydraulic system, using different delay times applied to on/off valves, is analyzed. The cases where the smallest power loss and the best dynamic behaviour take place are identified. Based on this, the actuator speed behavior, flow rate on the on/off valves and actuators and the pressure in the fixed displacement units for different speed steps are studied. The preliminary results showed a small power loss in the digital hydraulic system when compared with the average efficiency of other hydraulic systems. The speed transitions had small oscillations and adequate dynamic behavior.© 2014 ASME

Modern software solutions offer the possibility of numerical simulation of operating parameters and functions of the hydraulic system. In this paper, the comparison of classical analytical methods and computer solutions is made, along with presentation of the methodology for design and simulation of hydraulic systems work by applying software solutions with an overview of currently available applications for the design and simulation of hydraulic systems.

Abstract:In this study, we designed a new type of digital hydraulic transformer using four gear-pump/motor units with a displacement ratio of 20:21:22:23 and two control valve groups that consist of four solenoid directional valves. The driving gear shafts of the four gear-pump/motor units are fixedly connected to achieve synchronous rotation. The two control valve groups are respectively installed through an integrated valve block on the inlet and outlet of each gear-pump/motor unit. With the objective of reducing the installed power and energy consumption of hydraulic traction systems, we propose a new energy-saving hydraulic system based on a digital hydraulic transformer. This hydraulic system uses a digital hydraulic transformer as a pressure/flow control element. By controlling the power on/off states of eight solenoid directional valves, the digital hydraulic transformer can realize a change in output flow and then a change in speed of the hydraulic cylinder piston rod. Through the theoretical derivation and simulation analysis of the hydraulic system pressure/flow change process, and the experimental verification of the built hydraulic traction system based on the experimental platform, a conclusion is drawn that the proposed digital hydraulic transformer can change the output pressure/flow of a hydraulic system through a binary digital control, verifying the feasibility of the pressure change principle of the designed digital hydraulic transformer and the rationality of the hydraulic traction system circuit.

Abstract:In order to develop a new type of digital hydraulic pump and study its control characteristics, with the high-speed on/off valve control, a new type of control mode for digital piston pump was developed to realize different functions by changing a controller program. The dynamic and hydraulic models were es-tablished by analyzing the control principle of this digital pump. An interface was designed to connect the two models, and a virtual prototype of this digital pump was built in the virtual prototype platform. The flow control, pressure control and power control of this digital pump were studied in two ways: the simu-lation of the virtual prototype and the experiments of the physics prototype. The results showed that accu-rate pressure and flow control can be realized in less than 2 s, and accurate constant power control can be performed. So the digital pump is convenient to meet different control requirements by using defining way. Besides, the virtual prototype technology can well predict the pump performance and would be a good choice in de-signing and optimizing the digital pumps.
Energy Savings in Hydraulic Hybrid Transmissions through Digital Hydraulics Technology

Abstract:Hydraulic hybrid drivetrains, which are fluid power technologies implemented in automobiles, present a popular alternative to conventional drivetrain architectures due to their high energy savings, flexibility in power transmission, and ease of operation. Hydraulic hybrid drivetrains offer multiple environmental benefits compared to other power transmission technologies. They provide heavy-duty vehicles, e.g., commercial transportation, construction equipment, wagon handling, drilling machines, and military trucks, with the potential to achieve better fuel economy and lower carbon emissions. Despite the preponderance of hydraulic hybrid transmissions, state-of-the-art hydraulic hybrid drivetrains have relatively low efficiencies, around 64% to 81%. This low efficiency is due to the utilization of conventional variable displacement pumps and motors that experience high power losses throughout the drive cycle and thus fail to maintain high operating efficiency at lower volumetric displacements. This work proposes and validates a new methodology to improve the overall efficiency of hydraulic hybrid drivetrains by replacing conventional pump/motor units with their digital counterparts. Compared to conventional pump/motors, the digital pump/motor can achieve higher overall efficiencies at a wide range of operating conditions. A proof-of-concept digital pump/motor prototype was built and tested. The experimental data were integrated into a multi-domain physics-based simulation model of a series hydraulic hybrid transmission. The proposed methodology permits enhancing the overall efficiency of a series hydraulic hybrid transmission and thus allows for energy savings. Simulating the system at moderate load-speed conditions allowed achieving a total efficiency of around 89%. Compared to the average efficiency of the series hydraulic hybrid drivetrains, our simulation results reveal that the utilization of the state-of-the-art digital pump enables improving the total efficiency of the series hydraulic hybrid drivetrain by up to 25%.

Abstract:Programmable hydraulic control (PHC) technology utilized in construction machinery is superior to the conventional electronic-hydraulic control technology. This paper aims to briefly survey the recent results and upcoming trends in this field. First, major problems encountered using the widespread mobile hydraulic system, including insufficient compatibility, low energy efficiency and poor controllability, are demonstrated. The key element of PHC technology contains independent actuators, integrated sensors and intelligent software control, which transfers functionality from hardware to software. A survey of recent advancements for the three aspects is summarized in detail. Next, several industrial products applied in construction machinery are introduced. Finally, the paper focuses on the challenges facing the PHC technology, which prevented it from becoming widely spread in the market, and the countermeasures are discussed.

Abstract:In this technical brief, a novel hydraulic drive for large forces and power ratings at relatively high operating frequencies combining variable displacement control and hydraulic digital control is introduced. Basic analog motion control is achieved via variable displacement pumps driving a first cylinder stage. Digital control is realized by switching additional hydraulic cylinder stages on and off to support the analog stage if high forces are needed. The control strategy corresponds to this hydraulic concept. It consists of a feed forward control, a switching logic for the digital booster stages and a feed back proportional-integral (PI) control for stabilization. The validity of this concept and of the control strategy are shown by experiments on a highly downscaled test rig.

Abstract:DT digital twin technology has become an essential tool in hydraulic systems. It not only offers a virtual representation of the actual plant, but also real-time monitoring and optimization of that same machinery. Digital Twin (DT) technology has become a cornerstone in the optimization of industrial processes, particularly in the domain of hydraulic systems. For example, this research aims to use digital twin technology to detect and fix leaks in hydraulic systems. By integrating advanced simulation algorithms for accurate leak detection and performance enhancement, this study presents a comprehensive framework. Combining techniques developed from both data-driven and state-of-the-art optimization methods our approach looks to change how leaks are detected in hydraulics. Our test introduces a comprehensive framework that not only accurately identifies leaks but also employs advanced simulation algorithms for subsequent performance enhancement. By bringing together data-driven insights and cutting-edge optimization methods, our work at the frontier of revolutionizing leak detection in hydraulic systems.

Abstract:Despite the great advantages it offers, such as high-power density, precise control and large force output, conventional hydraulic valve control suffers from low energy efficiency due to substantial energy losses that occurs as the pressurized oil flows through the hydraulic circuit and its components, particularly the control-ones. Conventional hydraulic technology typically utilizes analogue spool valves, such as proportional and servovalves, as control components in various industrial and aeronautical applications where high precision and fast response are required. However, the use of these valves leads to high power dissipation, caused by the significant pressure drop across the small narrow passages uncovered during valve control. To maintain the relevance of hydraulic technology across industries, researchers are investigating a novel research field, also referred to as digital hydraulic technology. By using some digital concepts into hydraulic technology, the goal of this innovative research field is to replace conventional analogue spool valves with robust and low-cost digital On/Off valves, thus minimizing power losses and enhancing the overall efficiency of hydraulic systems. This paper presents a thorough review of the research advancements in digital hydraulic technology, with a specific focus on valve control. Firstly, the standard definition of digital hydraulic technology and its two main categories are introduced. Then, the operating principles and the digital approaches used to control digital hydraulic valves are examined. Afterwards, the digital hydraulic valve architectures developed over the years are reviewed, along with an in-depth analysis of their performance. Finally, the potential application scenarios, advantages and challenges with digital hydraulic valves are explored, highlighting potential areas for future research and development.
