Abstract:Since the early 1950s the institutional bases for the study and research of nuclear fission technology began to be established in Mexico. Among the education institutions, the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Autonomous University of Zacatecas (UAZ), and the Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM) stand out for the education of graduate human resources. In México, there are also parastatal institutions focused, but not exclusively on nuclear fission technology, such as the National Institute of Nuclear Research (ININ) and the Institute of Electrical Research (IIE – now known as INEEL –) which are emblematic of contributing to the solution of technical problems at the Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant (CNLV) owned and operated by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) of the Mexican State. For this purpose, scientific and technological projects are developed. The formation of graduate human resources and some research projects in the field we are referring to are financed by the National Council of Humanities, Science and Technology (CONAHCyT) of the Mexican government.

Abstract:The Snowmass community exercise started in April 2020 to identify and document a scientific vision for the future of particle physics in the US and international partners. The AF7-Magnets working group was charged to a) address the potential contributions of magnet technology to future HEP facilities, b) evaluate the R\&D required to enable these opportunities, c) estimate the time and cost scales of these efforts, and d) assess the needs for associated fabrication infrastructure and test facilities. This report addresses the working group charge, summarizes the status of accelerator and detector magnet technologies, and discuss ideas and plans to push this key area of the US and international HEP to new horizons.

Abstract:Central America and the Caribbean (CAC) need science development efforts through ambitious projects that require strong regional collaboration. Inspiration can be drawn from initiatives in regions with similar problems. The bottleneck is the scarcity of public research centers and little or no research in private universities. An interesting proposal is the creation of a Dominican "Silicon Beach". The "Central American Science and Technology Fund" should focus on objectives capable of attracting the attention of the non-academic sector, first and foremost policy makers, but also civil society in general. The successful experience of SESAME (" Synchrotron Light for Experimental Science and Applications in Middle East ") offers an interesting basis for reflection, as it allows scientific research and short-term practical and social applications. Only two of the more than 60 existing synchrotrons are in Latin America, both in Brazil. Together with other similar projects in the South, such as the African Light Source (AFLS), and with the support of SESAME, LNLS and other synchrotrons in the South, it could lead to interesting South-South cooperation, which could be supported by the European Union or the <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://NSF.As" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> David Gross reminded, Science drives Technology, Technology drives Innovation, and this ends up in the welfare of society. A regional synchrotron may be the way to make this a reality in the Great Caribbean Region, as a first historical example of a large regional facility there.

Abstract:The history of particle physics can be considered nothing less than a huge triumph for science. Over the course of a little more than a century of effort, our understanding of the world of atomic and subatomic physics went from a vague understanding of atoms, to one that is much more detailed. Early in this hundred-year-long period, we learned about electrons (1897), then how they circle a dense nucleus (1911), followed by the discovery of the protons (1917) and neutrons (1932) that form the nucleus. From the 1930s onward, researchers used both cosmic rays and particle accelerators to discover antimatter (1932), and particles that don't exist in atoms (e.g., the muon [1936] and neutrino [1956], as well as a huge number of others).

Abstract:The Snowmass 2021 Accelerator Frontier topical group \# 6 on Advanced Accelerator Concepts, covers new R\&D concepts for particle acceleration, generation, and focusing. Based on community input, this report describes how leveraging these concepts to efficiently harness the interaction of charged particles with extremely high electromagnetic fields at very high frequencies can provide the keys to reaching ultra high acceleration gradients (GeV/m and beyond). These methods have potential to reduce the dimensions, C0$_2$ footprint, and costs of future high energy physics machines, with added potential to reduce power consumption for future e+e- and $\gamma - \gamma$ machines to and beyond 15 TeV energies. Techniques range from laser and beam driven plasma and advanced structure accelerators to advanced phase space manipulations and generation of beams with extreme parameters.

Abstract:Particle accelerators technology is one of the generic technologies which is locomotive of the development in almost all fields of science and technology. According to the U.S. Department of Energy: "Accelerators underpin every activity of the Office of Science and, increasingly, of the entire scientific enterprise. From biology to medicine, from materials to metallurgy, from elementary particles to the cosmos, accelerators provide the microscopic information that forms the basis for scientific understanding and applications. The combination of ground and satellite based observatories and particle accelerators will advance our understanding of our world, our galaxy, our universe, and ourselves." Because of this, accelerator technology should become widespread all over the world. Existing situation shows that a large portion of the world, namely the South and Mid-East, is poor on the accelerator technology. UNESCO has recognized this deficit and started SESAME project in Mid-East, namely Jordan. Turkic Accelerator Complex (TAC) project is more comprehensive and ambitious project, from the point of view of it includes light sources, particle physics experiments and proton and secondary beam applications. At this stage, TAC project includes: Linac-ring type charm factory Synchrotron light source based on positron ring Free electron laser based on electron linac GeV scale proton accelerator TAC-Test Facility. First part of this presentation is devoted to general status of particle accelerators around the world. The second part deal with the status of the TAC proposal.

Abstract:The Electron-Ion Collider, a next generation electron-hadron and electron-nuclei scattering facility, will be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The wealth of new data will shape research in hadron physics, from nonperturbative QCD techniques to perturbative QCD improvements and global QCD analyses, for the decades to come. With the present proposal, Latin America based physicists, whose expertise lies on the theory and phenomenology side, make the case for the past and future efforts of a growing community, working hand-in-hand towards developing theoretical tools and predictions to analyze, interpret and optimize the results that will be obtained at the EIC, unveiling the role of the glue that binds us all. This effort is along the lines of various initiatives taken in the U.S., and supported by colleagues worldwide, such as the ones by the EIC User Group which were highlighted during the Snowmass Process and the Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5).

Abstract:Particle accelerators have enabled forefront research in high energy physics and other research areas for more than half a century. Accelerators have directly contributed to 26 Nobel Prizes in Physics since 1939 as well as another 20 Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, Medicine and Physics with X-rays. Although high energy physics has been the main driving force for the development of the particle accelerators, accelerator facilities have continually been expanding applications in many areas of research and technology. For instance, active areas of accelerator applications include radiotherapy to treat cancer, production of short-lived medical isotopes, synchrotron light sources, free-electron lasers, beam lithography for microcircuits, thin-film technology and radiation processing of food. Currently, the largest and most powerful accelerator is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, which accelerates protons to multi-TeV energies in a 27 km high-vacuum ring. To go beyond the maximum capabilities of the LHC, the next generation of circular and linear particle colliders under consideration, based on radiofrequency acceleration, will require multi-billion investment, kilometric infrastructure and a massive power consumption. These factors pose serious challenges in an increasingly resource-limited world. Therefore, it is important to look for alternative and sustainable acceleration techniques. This review article pays special attention to novel accelerator techniques to overcome present acceleration limitations towards more compact and cost-effective long term future accelerators.

Abstract:We describe the status of our effort to realize a first neutrino factory and the progress made in understanding the problems associated with the collection and cooling of muons towards that end. We summarize the physics that can be done with neutrino factories as well as with intense cold beams of muons. The physics potential of muon colliders is reviewed, both as Higgs factories and compact high-energy lepton colliders. The status and time scale of our research and development effort is reviewed as well as the latest designs in cooling channels including the promise of ring coolers in achieving longitudinal and transverse cooling simultaneously. We detail the efforts being made to mount an international cooling experiment to demonstrate the ionization cooling of muons.

Abstract:The Research and Engineering Apprenticeship Program of the Academy of Applied Science has funded several high school student summer internships to work within the Department of Chemistry at the University of Texas at El Paso. Over the last nine years, young Mexican-American scholars have been recruited into STEM-specific (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) laboratories to cultivate and nurture their interest in research. This commentary describes vignettes from a successful program in which coauthoring students are paired with a graduate student to advance a molecular-level understanding of biomedical intervention by traditional phytoremedials (plant-based remedies) in neurodegenerative disease processes. Considering that the selected phytoremedials originate from Mexico, Latin America, and the Indian subcontinent and are familiar folklore (kitchen theraceuticals) to the participating Hispanic and Indian scholars, the research project provides an enhanced sense of importance, ownership, and enthusiasm. Eventually, it cements the bridge to a future STEM-related college education, engages in the nation’s STEM capacity-building mission, and contributes to the nation’s Hispanic science and technology workforce of tomorrow.

Abstract:Background: The Transformative Educational Advancement and Mentoring (TEAM) network is a program funded by the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In support of the NCI's goal to reduce cancer health disparities, the CRCHD drives workforce diversity efforts by supporting trainees from backgrounds underrepresented (UR) in cancer biomedical and behavioral sciences research. The two TEAM programs launched at minority-serving institutions (MSIs) in 2023: The Southwest TEAM (STEAM) network and San Diego State University's (SDSU) Advancing Cancer Careers for ExceLlence (ACCEL). Each program has a unique model designed to best serve trainees in their respective regions, but both provide: 1) Diverse Training Champions (TCs), role models and navigators who act as the primary point of contact for scholars, provide direct services to trainees, ascertain member needs, develop programmatic offerings, and connect trainees to program components; 2) a mentorship program for pre and postdoctoral scholars and early stage investigators (ESIs); 3) targeted recruitment and professional development of UR scholars; and 4) tailored linkages to professional development and employment opportunities, and NCI/CRCHD funding priorities. This work summarizes the strategies planned across both programs to promote recruitment and retention of investigators from UR backgrounds and cultivate professional development opportunities for students and ESIs. Approach: The STEAM network includes the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, Northern Arizona University, and Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine and leverages the unique programs and expertise of these MSIs to collectively train diverse cancer health disparities researchers with interests in serving Native American, Hispanic and rural communities in the Southwestern United States. The ACCEL Program supports excellence, inclusion and transformation of the cancer research science force, expanding and strengthening the pipeline of UR scholars pursuing cancer research. SDSU, a Carnegie Foundation high activity research institution is one of few institutions to be both a Title Ill/Title V eligible institution for diversity. ACCEL works in close collaboration with the University of California San Diego Moores Cancer Center. We will discuss opportunities and approaches employed by each program in support of scholars to increase the number of diverse scholars in these research pipelines and demonstrate the effectiveness of such coordinated efforts. Conclusion: Supporting TCs to focus on scholars within regional programs will prove to be an efficient and effective way to increase recruitment and retention of diverse investigators in NCI research and community programs. Using novel strategies like TCs, the programs will support the attainment of career goals and enhance and diversify workforce capacity across the cancer research and care continuum. Abstract:A multi-TeV muon collider offers a spectacular opportunity in the direct exploration of the energy frontier. Offering a combination of unprecedented energy collisions in a comparatively clean leptonic environment, a high energy muon collider has the unique potential to provide both precision measurements and the highest energy reach in one machine that cannot be paralleled by any currently available technology. The topic generated a lot of excitement in Snowmass meetings and continues to attract a large number of supporters, including many from the early career community. In light of this very strong interest within the US particle physics community, Snowmass Energy, Theory and Accelerator Frontiers created a cross-frontier Muon Collider Forum in November of 2020. The Forum has been meeting on a monthly basis and organized several topical workshops dedicated to physics, accelerator technology, and detector R&D. Findings of the Forum are summarized in this report.

Abstract:The field of plasma-based particle accelerators has seen tremendous progress over the past decade and experienced significant growth in the number of activities. During this process, the involved scientific community has expanded from traditional university-based research and is now encompassing many large research laboratories worldwide, such as BNL, CERN, DESY, KEK, LBNL and SLAC. As a consequence, there is a strong demand for a consolidated effort in education at the intersection of accelerator, laser and plasma physics. The CERN Accelerator School on Plasma Wake Acceleration has been organized as a result of this development. In this paper, we describe the interactive component of this one-week school, which consisted of three case studies to be solved in 11 working groups by the participants of the CERN Accelerator School.

Abstract:A collection of personal reminiscences illuminates many widely unknown facts about the first steps of synchrotron radiation research; in particular, the events that brought Frascati close to world leadership in this domain.The users of synchrotron light are now tens of thousands throughout the world. Paradoxically, many of them do not know much about the early history of their domain. This is regrettable, since education about the initial developments makes it easier to fully understand synchrotron radiation and effectively use its amazing features. Scarcely known, in particular, is the key role of scientists working in Frascati, Italy. Partly based on his personal experiences, the author reports here relevant aspects of this story, including a pioneering French–Italian experiment that started in the early 1960s, and the Frascati contributions in the 1970s and 1980s to the birth of synchrotron light research. Finally, the unwise strategic decisions that prevented Italy from achieving absolute leadership in this domain – in spite of its unique initial advantages – are analyzed.

Abstract:Science misinformation represents a significant challenge for the scientific community. Hispanic communities are particularly vulnerable due to language barriers and the lack of accessible information in Spanish. We identified that a key step toward enhancing the accessibility of information for non-native English-speaking communities involves imparting science communication education and training to Hispanic youth. Our goal was to provide them with the skills to become science ambassadors who can effectively engage with their communities and bridge communication gaps. To address this, we developed the first science communication training program in Spanish for Hispanic high school and undergraduate students in Puerto Rico. The program called +Ciencia aims to provide training and education on science communication for Hispanic minorities through experiential and collaborative learning. In the short term, our multifaceted approach works to counter misinformation and promote science literacy within the broader community. Over the long term, our grassroots efforts with students will evolve into a generation of professionals equipped with strong engagement skills and comprehensive training in science communication with a specific focus on Hispanic audiences. Herein, we describe the components of this educational program and provide open access to educational materials and articles developed by three cohorts.
