Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are gaining prominence in the photovoltaic industry due to their exceptional photoelectric performance and low manufacturing costs, achieving a significant power conversion efficiency of 26.4%, which closely rivals that of silicon solar cells. Despite substantial advancements, the effective area of high-efficiency PSCs is typically limited to about 0.1 cm2 in laboratory settings, with efficiency decreasing as the area increases. The limitation poses a major obstacle to commercialization, as large-area, high-quality perovskite films are crucial for commercial applications. This paper reviews current techniques for producing large-area perovskites, focusing on slot-die coating, a method that has attracted attention for its revolutionary potential in PSC manufacturing. Slot-die coating allows for precise control over film thickness and is compatible with roll-to-roll systems, making it suitable for large-scale applications. The paper systematically outlines the characteristics of slot-die coating, along with its advantages and disadvantages in commercial applications, suggests corresponding optimization strategies, and discusses future development directions to enhance the scalability and efficiency of PSCs, paving the way for broader commercial deployment.

Abstract:Since the report in 2012 of a solid-state perovskite solar cell (PSC) with a power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.7% and a stability of 500 h, intensive efforts have been made to increase the certified PCE, reaching 25.2% in 2019. The PCE of PSCs now exceeds that of conventional thin-film solar-cell technologies, and the rate at which this increase has been achieved is unprecedented in the history of photovoltaics. Moreover, the development of moisture-stable and heat-stable materials has increased the stability of PSCs. Small-area devices (<1 cm2) are typically fabricated using a spin-coating method; however, this approach may not be suitable for the preparation of the large-area (>100 cm2) substrates required for commercialization. Thus, materials and methods need to be developed for coating large-area PSCs. In this Review, we discuss solution-based and vapour-phase coating methods for the fabrication of large-area perovskite films, examine the progress in performance and the parameters affecting the properties of large-area coatings, and provide an overview of the methodologies for achieving high-efficiency perovskite solar modules.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have received a great deal of attention in the science and technology field due to their outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE), which increased rapidly from 3.9% to 25.5% in less than a decade, comparable to single crystal silicon solar cells. In the past ten years, much progress has been made, e.g. impressive ideas and advanced technologies have been proposed to enlarge PSC efficiency and stability. However, this outstanding progress has always been referred to as small-area (<0.1 cm2) PSCs. Little attention has been paid to the preparation processes and their micro-mechanisms for large-area (>1 cm2) PSCs. Meanwhile, scaling up is an inevitable way for large-scale application of PSCs. Therefore, we firstly summarize the current achievements for high efficiency and stability large-area perovskite solar cells, including precursor composition, deposition, growth control, interface engineering, packaging technology, etc. Then we include a brief discussion and outlook for the future development of large-area PSCs in commercialization.

Abstract:Scaling up the fabrication process for perovskite solar cells has emerged as a prominent research focus in the field of perovskite photovoltaics. Current methods for preparing large-scale perovskite solar cells often struggle to meet the simultaneous requirements of continuous production, high compatibility, and low commissioning costs necessary for industrial-scale manufacturing. Here, the roller coating method is demonstrated to realize the preparation of large-scaled and uniform perovskite films with customized patterning through a facile and stable "touch-and-roll" motion. The unique fabric-based roller and "dual-meniscus" structure guarantee accurate control of ink flow and film thickness, thereby realizing the reproducible preparation on different substrates ranging from rigid glass to flexibe polymer film. The method yielded PSCs with peak efficiencies of 14.11% (0.16 cm 2 ) and 10.61% (1 cm 2 ). This roller coating method exhibits a promising new avenue for advancing the scale and commercial development of perovskite photovoltaics.

Abstract:Organometal halide perovskites have exhibited a bright future as photovoltaic semiconductor in next generation solar cells due to their unique and promising physicochemical properties. Over the past few years, we have witnessed a tremendous progress of efficiency record evolution of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Up to now, the highest efficiency record of PSCs has reached 22.1%; however, it was achieved at a very small device area of <0.1 cm2. With the device area increasing to mini-module scale, the efficiency record dropped dramatically. The inherent causes are mainly ascribed to inadequate quality control of large-area perovskite thin films and insufficient optimization of solar module design. In current stage of PSCs research and development, to overcome these two obstacles is in urgent need before this new technology could realize scale-up industrialization. Herein, we present an overview of recently developed strategies for preparing large-area perovskite thin films and perovskite solar modules (PSMs). At last, cost analysis and future application directions of PSMs have also been discussed.

Abstract:The technological requirements are changing, and there is a push for more effective energy production and conversion technologies as a result of a social desire for sustainable and renewable energy sources. Solar energy conversion, particularly photovoltaic cells, offers a potentially helpful solution in this situation. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been reported to have increased significantly from 3% to 26.1%. The transition from laboratory PSCs to their commercialization needs scalable deposition techniques, high efficiency at a scalable level, and perovskite photovoltaic with minimal loss in PCE. In this review article, the scalable fabrication processes for perovskite solar modules (PSMs) and their fabrication challenges, as well as latest developments in PSM stability, are focused on. Finally, the future prospectus and challenges for PSMs are presented. This review will give us an overall understanding of the thin film coating inside the PSM and good insight into the future direction of development.

Abstract:As an emerging sunlight-harvesting material, halide perovskite has obtained extensive achievements on device efficiency and stability in the past decade. Especially, the efficiency of lab-scale perovskite solar cells (PSCs, 25.2%) is already comparable with that of crystalline silicon solar cells. However, the development of large-scale perovskite solar modules is far behind small area devices due to difficult fabrication process and stringent requirements for film quality, the Achilles' heel to hinder their commercialization. Therefore, the coating techniques of perovskite modules need to be developed and optimized continuously. Moreover, the underlying mechanism along with these coating processes should be revealed urgently. Herein, the recent advances for several popular coating methods are systematically summarized that are widely applied in the deposition of large-scale films. The relevant mechanistic study, including the formation of wet film, and subsequent nucleation and growth kinetics during coating process, are discussed. The main target is to gain insight into the large-scale PSCs fabrication. Hopefully, useful guidance is provided to further improvement of efficiency and stability of PSCs, which finally promotes their commercialization.

Abstract:With amazing progress in the state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells (PSCs) fabricated by laboratory-scale spin-coating methods, upscaling the PSCs via printing friendly techniques is becoming more and more important toward the future deployment of large-scale and stable perovskite modules. Here, we demonstrate the room-temperature meniscus coating of high-quality perovskite films incorporated with a multifunctional sulfobetaine-based zwitterionic surfactant. Systematic in situ studies uncover the perovskite crystallization pathway and emphasize the surfactant's synergistic role in film construction, crystallization kinetics modulation, defect passivation, and moisture barrier protection. This strategy is applicable across perovskite compositions and device architectures with the enhanced power conversion efficiencies up to 22%. Upscaling the device area to 0.8 cm 2 has negligible deterioration in the performance. This represents one of the highest records for the upscaling coated PSCs, not limited in room-temperature coated PSCs. In addition, this approach significantly improves the stability of perovskite films and devices under different aging conditions.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are ideally fabricated entirely via a scalable solution process at low temperatures to realize the promise of simple manufacturing, low‐cost processing, compatibility with flexible substrates, and perovskite‐based tandem solar cells. However, high‐quality photoactive perovskite thin films under those processing conditions is a challenge. Here, a laminar air‐knife‐assisted room‐temperature meniscus coating approach that enables one to control the drying kinetics during the solidification process and achieve high‐quality perovskite films and solar cells is devised. Moreover, this approach offers a solid model platform for in situ UV–vis and microscopic investigation of the perovskite film drying kinetics, which provide rich insights correlating the degree of supersaturation, the nucleation, and growth rate during the kinetic drying process, and ultimately, the film morphology and performance of the solar cell devices. Manufacturing friendly, antisolvent‐free room‐temperature coating of hysteresis‐free PSCs with a power conversion efficiency of 20.26% for 0.06 cm2 and 18.76% for 1 cm2 devices is demonstrated.

Abstract:The recent rapid development in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has led to significant research interest due to their notable photovoltaic performance, currently exceeding 25% power conversion efficiency for small-area PSCs. The materials used to fabricate PSCs dominate the current photovoltaic market, especially with the rapid increase in efficiency and performance. The present work reviews recent developments in PSCs’ preparation and fabrication methods, the associated advantages and disadvantages, and methods for improving the efficiency of large-area perovskite films for commercial application. The work is structured in three parts. First is a brief overview of large-area PSCs, followed by a discussion of the preparation methods and methods to improve PSC efficiency, quality, and stability. Envisioned future perspectives on the synthesis and commercialization of large-area PSCs are discussed last. Most of the growth in commercial PSC applications is likely to be in building integrated photovoltaics and electric vehicle battery charging solutions. This review concludes that blade coating, slot-die coating, and ink-jet printing carry the highest potential for the scalable manufacture of large-area PSCs with moderate-to-high PCEs. More research and development are key to improving PSC stability and, in the long-term, closing the chasm in lifespan between PSCs and conventional photovoltaic cells.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have undergone a dramatic increase in laboratory-scale efficiency to more than 25%, which is comparable to Si-based single-junction solar cell efficiency. However, the efficiency of PSCs drops from laboratory-scale to large-scale perovskite solar modules (PSMs) because of the poor quality of perovskite films, and the increased resistance of large-area PSMs obstructs practical PSC applications. An in-depth understanding of the fabricating processes is vital for precisely controlling the quality of large-area perovskite films, and a suitable structural design for PSMs plays an important role in minimizing energy loss. In this review, we discuss several solution-based deposition techniques for large-area perovskite films and the effects of operating conditions on the films. Furthermore, different structural designs for PSMs are presented, including the processing technologies and device architectures.

This review article primarily focuses on the development of large‐area PSCs, recent advancements in this field, and the obstacles related to scaling up this technology. Abstract:CONSPECTUS: To tackle the foreseen energy crisis and serious environmental problem caused by conventional energy resources, solar cells, or photovoltaics (PV), a technology that can directly convert sunlight to electricity has been considered to be one of the most important and cost-effective clean energy techniques that benefit the environment. So far, silicon-based PVs have dominated the market due to mature fabrication techniques and their relatively good power conversion efficiency (PCE) and excellent stability. In the past decades, metal halide perovskite PVs have been a major direction of current PV research owing to their intriguing optoelectronic performance. The record PCE of perovskite PV cells has unprecedently increased from an original 3.8 to 25.5%. The typical structure of a photovoltaic perovskite is ABX(3), where A refers to a monovalent cation such as methylammonium (MA(+)), cesium (Cs+), or formamidinium (FA(+)); B refers to a divalent cation such as Pb2+ or Sn2+; and X refers to a halide anion. In general, a perovskite PV device consists of an active layer of the perovskite absorber, which is connected by a hole-transporting layer (HTL) and an electron-transporting layer (ETL). In the beginning, the strategies to improve the PCEs mainly focused on developing an effective method to grow a smooth and continuous polycrystalline film. After the improvement of the baseline PCE of the perovskite PVs, various techniques were employed to reduce the defects of perovskite formed at grain boundaries and surfaces, further pushing the PCEs of perovskite PV devices to over 20%. In the meantime, the discovery of suitable and low-cost interfacial materials such as electron-transporting materials and hole-transporting materials has appealed to the attention of the perovskite research community to accelerate the commercialization of the perovskite PVs. In this Account, we start from our efforts to develop facile and effective fabrication strategies to obtain smooth and continuous polycrystalline perovskite thin films, including vapor-assisted and moisture-assisted perovskite crystal growth. The strategies and the in-depth mechanisms of preventing the formation of specific detrimental defects accumulated at grain boundaries or the surface are also portrayed by designing various passivation molecules with certain functional groups, such as carbonyl groups, amine groups, or sulfonic groups. Some systematically designed electron- or hole-transporting materials to improve the charge extraction and collection efficiency in perovskite PV devices are discussed as well. Finally, future perspectives for further enhancing the long-term stability and PCE are proposed to accelerate the commercialization of perovskite PV devices in the next decade.

Abstract:The hybrid organic–inorganic halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted considerable attention in the photovoltaic community during the last decade due to unique properties, such as high absorption coefficient, solutionable fabrication, and compatibility with roll-to-roll technology. A certified power conversion efficiency of PSCs as high as 25.2% has been obtained, approaching the levels of silicon solar cells, copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS), and cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film solar cells. However, the device area of a PSC is one of the biggest challenges for the commercialize applications. To fabricate large-area PSCs, various fabrication methods have been proposed, including spray coating, slot-die coating, vacuum deposition, and blade coating. Here, the blade-coating technique progress for the PSC fabrication has been reviewed. Moreover, the optimized ways during the solution fabrication process, the efficient strategy for improving the perovskite films' morphology, have also been summarized in this work. In the last part, the challenges and opportunities of PSC commercialization have also been proposed.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells have shown promising potential in the next generation of photovoltaics due to their excellent photovoltaic performance. However, there is still a significant disparity between small-area cells and large-area modules in terms of commercial applications. Herein, we will discuss recent research advancements in large-area perovskite solar modules (PSMs). Techniques such as laser scribing, optimization of interconnects, and innovative module designs are all focused on enhancing the module's performance. Furthermore, this review presents issues associated with depositing large-area thin films. It also introduces some common strategies to enhance device performance, such as stabilizing the perovskite phase structure, passivating defects, and inhibiting ion migration. Ultimately, the critical importance of device encapsulation in preserving stability and extending the operational lifespan of photovoltaic cells is underscored.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (Pero-SCs) exhibited a bright future for the next generation of photovoltaic technology because of their high power conversion efficiency (PCE), low cost, and simple solution process. The certified laboratory-scale PCE has reached 25.7% referred to small scale (2) of Pero-SCs. However, with the increase of the area to module scale, the PCE drops dramatically mainly due to the inadequate regulation of growing large-area perovskite films. Therefore, there is a dire need to produce high-quality perovskite films for large-area photovoltaic modules. Herein, we summarize the recent advances in perovskite photovoltaic modules (PPMs) with particular attention paid to the coating methods, as well as the growth regulation of the high-quality and large-area perovskite films. Furthermore, this study encompasses future development directions and prospects for PPMs.

Abstract:Recently, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have flourished, and their power conversion efficiency (PCE) has increased from the initial 3.8% to 25.2% in 2019, which is an unprecedented advance. However, usually high-efficiency and stable PSCs are small-area devices prepared by spin coating. This method is not suitable for the preparation of large-area devices in commercialization. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new materials and methods for the scalable fabrication of PSCs. In this review, we first describe the common small-area PSCs preparation methods, understand the nucleation and crystal growth kinetics of perovskite, and analyze the reasons that hinder the development of small-area devices to large-area devices. Next, in order to meet the challenges of PSC's scalable fabrication, we summarized and analyzed four strategies: scaling up precursor solutions, scalable deposition methods for large-area films, scaling up charge-transport layers and back electrodes, developing solar modules. Finally, challenges and prospects are proposed to help researchers prepare high-efficiency large-area PSCs.

Journal of Semiconductors

Abstract:The recent dramatic rise in power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of perovskite solar cells has triggered intense research worldwide. However, their practical development is hampered by poor stability and low PCE values with large areas devices. Here, we developed a gas-pumping method to avoid pinholes and eliminate local structural defects over large areas of perovskite film, even for 5 × 5 cm2 modules, the PCE reached 10.6% and no significant degradation was found after 140 days of outdoor testing. Our approach enables the realization of high performance large-area PSCs for practical application.
