Abstract:In this paper, a defect detecting system of wheel tread based on linear charge coupled device (CCD) is established, and the image recognition technology of wheel tread defects under this system is studied. Firstly, images of the whole wheel tread are captured through the system. Secondly, median filtering and image contrast enhancement are processed on the defect images, and then the canny edge detection based on gradient histogram is performed. Thirdly, the images after edge detection are used for eight-neighbor boundary tracking, in order to obtain the sizes in-pixel of defects. Finally, the linear CCD camera is calibrated by Zhang checkerboard-like calibration method, and the actual sizes of defects are calculated. The results of this experiment show that the detecting system can identify the wheel tread defects effectively, and obtain the defects' actual width and height accurately through image processing algorithm.

Abstract:In rotating machinery, the malfunctions of rolling bearings are one of the most common faults. To prevent machine breakdown, the pattern recognition of rolling bearing faults has been a pivotal issue for fault identification and classification. This study proposes a new feature extraction method based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and singular value decomposition (SVD) for fault classification. The proposed E–S method (EEMD combined with SVD using feature parameters) intends to enhance the faults identification capability in different working conditions, including various fault types (FT), fault severities (FS), and fault loads (FL). In this study, the E–S method is adopted to analyze the simulated signals. And the experiment further discusses three cases of different FT, FS, and FL separately under six different classifiers. The experimental results show that different fault classes can be effectively distinguished by the proposed E–S in comparison with other traditional feature extraction methods. Hence, the proposed method is verified to have an effective and excellent performance in bearing fault classification.

Abstract:In order to extract the features of tire defects in X-ray images, Linear transformation is often performed on the images. However, Gabor and wavelet transformation are predefined and unchangeable, and their basic functions can't be adapted to the characteristics of defect images. So we propose a new approach using Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Topographic Independent Component Analysis (TICA) reconstruction algorithm to extract the features of tire defects and apply automatic recognition of tire defects. First, the basis functions and filters which adapt to the characteristics of defect images are estimated adaptively using ICA and TICA from the tire defect library. Then, the tire defect images are filtered to extract features. Finally, the samples are classified by a nonlinear support vector machine (SVM). Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has very high recognition rates for shape defects, texture defects and other defects. Its total recognition rate can be as high as 95.76%.

Abstract:This paper studies the recognition of the brake image obtained when a train is running and the automatic test of brake wear. According to the features of the slot between the wheel tread and the brake shoe, we propose a method for the image inspection of brake shoe wear. Experimental results show that the method has a high recognition rate, high robustness, high inspection precision and a high execution speed, and can meet the practical inspection requirements.

Abstract:The wheel is easy to produce defects after a long time of use. Train maintenance technicians must overhaul and maintain train wheels on time and regularly to ensure the safe operation of trains. The existing manual detection has disadvantages of low efficiency and strong subjectivity. Compared with other defect forms, the identification accuracy of wheel surface crack is low due to the high noise and weak features, this paper proposes a feature enhancement and identification method for wheel surface crack based on texture segmentation and combination descriptor. Firstly, a morphology-based texture segmentation method is proposed to separate cracks and noise. Then, the crack characteristics are enhanced by filtering. Finally, a crack diagnosis method based on combination descriptor is proposed, which is evaluated from two dimensions of crack morphology and distribution characteristics. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the images of the wheel collected from the freight car workshop were used for verification, and the detection rate reached 93.78%. The experimental results show that the proposed method is more effective in the case of weak crack features and surface dirt, and can better adapt to the identification of surface cracks on wheel in complex engineering applications.

Abstract:Fault detection and diagnosis become one of today’s hot spots, which describes that image information is an important form of fault information, it can quickly through the image processing technique, and can accurately extract the characteristic signal. This article selects the color of the particle image, the integrated use of digital image processing, pattern recognition theory, the characteristic parameters of tribology knowledge, as well as the extraction, optimization, and digital; verifies the feasibility of iron spectrum of abrasive fault recognition, and provides a new efficient ferrographic wear particle image recognition method. Firstly, the grindstone image of the original color diesel engine was preprocessed, and the grindstone image of the ferrograph was identified by directly selecting grindstone from the preprocessed ferrograph image and selecting the target grindstone. According to the two types of abrasive particles, the characteristic parameters were first classified, and then the values of the characteristic parameters were obtained through the training and learning of the sample abrasive particles. In view of the large number of characteristic parameters of ferro-spectrum abrasive particles, this article determined the characteristic parameters suitable for the identification of abrasive particles in this article through the feature optimization and proved the correctness of the identification of characteristic parameters of abrasive particles through the test.

Abstract:A kind of fault diagnosis system based on multi-channel vibration signal is put forward.After analyzing the particularity of trolley wheel bearings,current diagnosis methods and their disadvantages are discussed and the superiority of this method is pointed out.Hardware architecture of signal acquisition system is given;user interface software is built with modularization theory principle,on the precondition of PC's high speed computing and mass storage ability.Critical signal analyzing methods such as time domain,frequency domain,power spectrum,static parameters etc.are introduced to diagnose bearings' faults.The experimental results indicate that this system is convenient,online,high success rate,and satisfy the requests of online fault diagnosis of port machine's trolley wheel bearing.

Abstract:The performance of the tire has a very important impact on the safe driving of the car, and in the actual use of the tire, due to complex road conditions or use conditions, it will inevitably cause immeasurable wear, scratches and other damage. In order to effectively detect the damage existing in the key parts of the tire, a tire surface damage detection method based on image processing was proposed. In this method, the image of tire side is captured by camera first. Then, the collected images are preprocessed by optimizing the multi-scale bilateral filtering algorithm to enhance the detailed information of the damaged area, and the optimization effect is obvious. Thirdly, the image segmentation based on clustering algorithm is carried out. Finally, the Harris corner detection method is used to capture the "salt and pepper" corner of the target region, and the segmsegmed binary image is screened and matched based on histogram correlation, and the target region is finally obtained. The experimental results show that the similarity detection is accurate, and the damage area can meet the requirements of accurate identification.

Defect Detection in Tire X-Ray Images: Conventional Methods Meet Deep Structures

Abstract:This paper introduces a robust approach for automated defect detection in tire X-ray images by harnessing traditional feature extraction methods such as Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Gray Level Co-Occurrence Matrix (GLCM) features, as well as Fourier and Wavelet-based features, complemented by advanced machine learning techniques. Recognizing the challenges inherent in the complex patterns and textures of tire X-ray images, the study emphasizes the significance of feature engineering to enhance the performance of defect detection systems. By meticulously integrating combinations of these features with a Random Forest (RF) classifier and comparing them against advanced models like YOLOv8, the research not only benchmarks the performance of traditional features in defect detection but also explores the synergy between classical and modern approaches. The experimental results demonstrate that these traditional features, when fine-tuned and combined with machine learning models, can significantly improve the accuracy and reliability of tire defect detection, aiming to set a new standard in automated quality assurance in tire manufacturing.

Abstract:The in-seivice wheel-set quality is one of critical challenges for railway safety, especially for the high-speed train and heavy haul train. The shelling in wheel tread, initiated by rolling contact fatigue (RCF) damage, is one of the most significant phenomena and has serious influence on rail industry. The Ultrasonic testing technique is successful NDT method for inner defects in wheel-set and difficult to find the defect in surface area. Electromagnetic NDT methods have high sensitive on the surface crack but difficult to sub-surface crack in wheel tread. This paper studied the mechanicals of eddy current pulsed thermography for detection those defects. Some features of defects on wheel tread were abstracted and studied; one new inductive coil was designed for one experimental platform to test the rolling contact fatigue crack in real wheel tread. Based on the simulation results, the eddy current pulsed combined eddy current and thermography methods, can realize the detection.
Approach to Detecting Defects in Wheels Based on Flaws'characteristics and Seeded Region Growing Method

Abstract:The method presented was based on the characteristics of the size of wheel flaws, using horizontal and vertical hill-locating to get blocks of flaw pels, and to pick up the goal flaw-located areas. The goal flaw-located image was used to get the seeds, growing obstacles, seed-evolution and initial casting image thresholding. The binary-valued image obtained by the improved seeded region growing method displayed the flaws of the casting image accurately. Four samples, i.e., four images with different flaw types, different parts of casting and different backgrounds, were used to present the method. And it was tested by 100 images. The result denominated many advantages of the method. It did not need complicated pretreatment, but could deal with diverse types of flaws. Images with poor quality (i.e.,poor-contrast, high noise, complicated structures and backgrounds, asymmetrical illumination and etc) could be processed, and reference images were not needed. The processing speed met the demand of industry uses.
Fault Diagnosis Method for the Rolling Bearing of Railway Vehicle Based on Wavelet Packet Transform and BP Neural Network

Abstract:In order to diagnose the fault of railway rolling bearing, a new method of fault diagnosis based on the improved wavelet packet and BP (Back Propagation) neural network was put forward, and a fault diagnosis system for railway rolling bearing was developed. The vibration signal of the analog fault bearing of the bearing test rig was collected by Piezoelectric Accelerometer. At first, the signal was de-noised by wavelet. Then it was decomposed by the improved wavelet packet to construct the eigenvector that can be taken as the fault samples to train the improved BP neural network. Finally, the intelligent fault diagnosis was realized. The test results show that the fault diagnosis system based on this method can well diagnose such faults as the fatigue, spalling, wear, crack, and so on, occurred in the inner ring, the outer ring and the rolling body surface of railway rolling bearing. The fault diagnosis system has high application value in practical engineering.

Abstract:Whether the wheelset of a high-speed train has defects such as cracks is very important to the safety of high-speed trains. Hence, the wheelset must be regularly inspected for flaws. For flaw detection of a wheelset, it is necessary to record the axle end information of the wheelset to correlate with the flaw detection results. To quickly and accurately identify the axle end mark of the wheelset, an automatic identification method based on machine vision is proposed. Our method identifies seven types of marks on the axle end, including the smelting number, steel grade number, unit number, sequence number, year and month, axle type mark, and the azimuth mark. Using the established automatic identification method of axle end marks, based on Retinex theory, an improved dual-core Laplacian combined with Gaussian filtering operation is proposed to solve the problem of the low contrast of the wheelset axle end image. An improved image tilt correction algorithm based on the combination of Hough circle detection and bilinear interpolation is proposed, which solves the angle tilt problem of the target character area of the axis end image. To handle the various types of axis end markers and the small amount of data, a retraining method to improve recognition accuracy is proposed. This method first uses Chi_Sim as the basic font for training and then retrains based on the trained font. Finally, Tesseract-OCR is used to improve the accuracy of the recognition results. Experiments are carried out by developing an automatic recognition program for axle end marks. The results show that the proposed method can effectively identify and classify seven-character types, and the recognition accuracy reaches 96.88% while the recognition time of each image is 5.88 s.

Abstract:Rotating machinery is one of the most typical types of mechanical equipment and plays a significant role in industrial applications. Condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of rotating machinery has gained wide attention for its significance in preventing catastrophic accident and guaranteeing sufficient maintenance. With the development of science and technology, fault diagnosis methods based on multi-disciplines are becoming the focus in the field of fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. This paper presents a multi-discipline method based on image-processing for fault diagnosis of rotating machinery. Different from traditional analysis method in one-dimensional space, this study employs computing method in the field of image processing to realize automatic feature extraction and fault diagnosis in a two-dimensional space. The proposed method mainly includes the following steps. First, the vibration signal is transformed into a bi-spectrum contour map utilizing bi-spectrum technology, which provides a basis for the following image-based feature extraction. Then, an emerging approach in the field of image processing for feature extraction, speeded-up robust features, is employed to automatically exact fault features from the transformed bi-spectrum contour map and finally form a high-dimensional feature vector. To reduce the dimensionality of the feature vector, thus highlighting main fault features and reducing subsequent computing resources, t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding is adopt to reduce the dimensionality of the feature vector. At last, probabilistic neural network is introduced for fault identification. Two typical rotating machinery, axial piston hydraulic pump and self-priming centrifugal pumps, are selected to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results show that the proposed method based on image-processing achieves a high accuracy, thus providing a highly effective means to fault diagnosis for rotating machinery.
An Efficient Method for Wheel-Flattened Defects Detection Based on Acoustic Emission Technique

Abstract:Recent research studies show that acoustic emission (AE) technologies have great potential in detecting the flattened defects of wheel; however, the wheel-rail rolling interference (WRRI) significantly influences the accuracy of wheel defect detection. Aiming to solve the above-mentioned problem, a novel detection method, which combines an improved synthesized health index (ISHI) with a time adaptive threshold (time-ATH), is proposed in this article. In order to obtain the defect information from the signals generated by the wheels, a completed feature set that contains many types of features is extracted from AE signals. Then, the ISHI is fused by several effective features that are selected from the completed feature set, according to detection rate and accuracy. Besides, a time-ATH calculation is proposed to detect the defective signals of wheels and reduce the influence of the WRRI. The method is fully verified in actual datasets, and the results show that the proposed method achieves a better detection rate and accuracy. Moreover, it provides an effective way for the AE detection of wheel-flattened defects under strong and numerous WRRI.

Abstract:The in-service wheel-set quality is one of critical challenges for railway safety, especially for the high-speed train. The defect in wheel tread, initiated by rolling contact fatigue (RCF) damage, is one of the most significant phenomena and has serious influence on rail industry. Eddy current pulsed thermography is studied to compensate the UT method for detection these early stage of fatigue cracks in wheel tread surface. This paper proposes approximately uniform magnetic field, excited by Helmholtz coils, based pulsed eddy current thermography to achieve open-view image and meet the irregular surface in wheel tread through numerical way. Some features are extracted and studied also to quantify the fatigue crack in term of eddy current pulsed thermography. The proposed method enhances the capability for cracks detection and quantitative evaluation compared with previous NDT method in railway.

Abstract:Vibration technique provides useful information in fault detection of diesel engine, bringing significant cost benefits to diesel engine condition monitoring. Usually, time-frequency calculation on vibration signal is so complex that it is difficult to achieve online fault detection. In this paper, a method of fault detection in diesel engine is developed based on symmetrical polar coordinates and image recognition. In this method, time-domain waveform of vibration signal is transformed into snowflake-shaped in mirror symmetry pattern without time-frequency analysis. By the comparison of the geometric features of the snowflake images from different wear conditions of crankshaft bearing in diesel engines, we use centroid position and direction angle of the petal in snowflake image as features to detect the fault. Then, fuzzy c-means (FCM) are used to detect the conditions of the engine according to these features. In order to validate the methods, some experiments have been performed, the experimental results show that the centroid position and direction angle of the petal in snowflake image can reflect the information of different wear conditions in crankshaft bearing, and the fault of crankshaft bearing can be detected accurately. Hence, the method can work as fault detection in diesel engine, which is simple and effective, compared with time-frequency calculation method.

Abstract:Train wheels are crucial components for ensuring the safety of trains. The accurate and fast identification of wheel tread defects is necessary for the timely maintenance of wheels, which is essential for achieving the premise of conditional repair. Image-based detection methods are commonly used for detecting tread defects, but they still have issues with the misdetection of water stains and the leaking of small defects. In this paper, we address the challenges posed by the detection of wheel tread defects by proposing improvements to the YOLOv8 model. Firstly, the impact of water stains on tread defect detection is avoided by optimising the structure of the detection layer. Secondly, an improved SPPCSPC module is introduced to enhance the detection of small targets. Finally, the SIoU loss function is used to accelerate the convergence speed of the network, which ensures defect recognition accuracy with high operational efficiency. Validation was performed on the constructed tread defect dataset. The results demonstrate that the enhanced YOLOv8 model in this paper outperforms the original network and significantly improves the tread defect detection indexes. The average precision, accuracy, and recall reached 96.95%, 96.30%, and 95.31%.

Abstract:The rail wheel is the key device of the rail vehicle. When the vehicle running conditions worsen or emergency braking, the rail train will have severe sliding friction and collision on the track, resulting in scratches, peeling, and scratches on the wheel tread. The traditional wheel defect detection technology can not realize automatic classification and accurate defect positioning. Thus, an improved YOLOv3 framework for rail wheel surface defect detection is developed. The classification detection of four types of wheel tread defects is realized, and the average accuracy of mean average precision (mAP) is 0.92. Compared with the other detection methods, the experimental results show that the improved YOLOv3 model not only maintains the detection speed but also improves the detection accuracy and meets the real-time requirement.
