Abstract:The color filter array widely used in smart phones is mainly Quad Bayer and Bayer. Quad Bayer color filter array (QBC) is a filter shared by four pixels, which can improve the image quality by averaging four pixels in the 2 × 2 neighborhood under low light conditions. From low-resolution Bayer to full-resolution Bayer has become a very challenging research, especially in the presence of noise. Considering denoise and remosaic, we propose a general two-stage framework JRD-QBC (Joint Remosaic and Denoise in Quad Bayer CFA), including denoise and remosaic. To begin with, for the denoise phase, in order to ensure the difference of each color channel recovery, we convert the input to hollow QBC, and then enter our backbone network, including source encoder module, feature refinement module and final prediction module. After that, get a clean QBC and then use the same network structure to remosaic to generate Bayer. Extensive experiments demonstrate the proposed two-stage method has a good effect in quantitative indicators and subjective vision.
An Efficient Transformer For Demosaicing Via Compressed Multi-Branch Attention Mechanism.

Abstract:Recent demosaicing approaches are not effective and efficient enough as they do not make full use of these two factors: (1) Capturing long-range spatial dependencies effiently. (2) Reducing the computational costs when utilizing channel attention. To take them into consideration, we propose an Efficient Compressed Multibranch Transformer (ECMT) to handle demosaicing problem on various color filter arrays (CFA). There are two key specifically designed components: First, a Local-Global Spatial-wise Multi-head Self-Attention (LGSMSA) captures both spatial long-range dependencies and local context details by an efficient manner. Second, an Inner-Compressed Channel-wise Multi-head Self-Attention (ICCMSA) clusters closely related channels into the same group and then calculates channel-wise MSA within each group to reduce the computational cost. Experimental results on both real and synthetic datasets show that our ECMT achieves promising reconstruction quality in Bayer and QuadBayer CFA while requiring cheaper computational, memory costs and less inference time compared to state-of-the-art methods.
Joint Demosaicing and Subpixel-Based Down-Sampling for Bayer Images: A Fast Frequency-Domain Analysis Approach

Abstract:A portable device such as a digital camera with a single sensor and Bayer color filter array (CFA) requires demosaicing to reconstruct a full color image. To display a high resolution image on a low resolution LCD screen of the portable device, it must be down-sampled. The two steps, demosaicing and down-sampling, influence each other. On one hand, the color artifacts introduced in demosaicing may be magnified when followed by down-sampling; on the other hand, the detail removed in the down-sampling cannot be recovered in the demosaicing. Therefore, it is very important to consider simultaneous demosaicing and down-sampling.

Abstract:An effective color filter array(CFA)Demosaidng method is proposed for digital still cameras in which a single CCD or CMOS image sensor is used.Since a CFA is adopted,we must interpolate missing color values in the red,green and blue channels at each pixel location.Compared with most of other algorithms,we focus on eliminating the color artifacts with low computational complexity.Based on edge-directional algorithms, we use the homogeneity of adjacent pixels to determine the edge direction information.Meanwhile we use the hue-constant' law to interpolate the missing channels.The experiment results show that this algorithms can effectively reduce color artifacts with low computational complexity.
Efficient Unified Demosaicing for Bayer and Non-Bayer Patterned Image Sensors

Abstract:As the physical size of recent CMOS image sensors (CIS) gets smaller, the latest mobile cameras are adopting unique non-Bayer color filter array (CFA) patterns (e.g., Quad, Nona, QxQ), which consist of homogeneous color units with adjacent pixels. These non-Bayer sensors are superior to conventional Bayer CFA thanks to their changeable pixel-bin sizes for different light conditions but may introduce visual artifacts during demosaicing due to their inherent pixel pattern structures and sensor hardware characteristics. Previous demosaicing methods have primarily focused on Bayer CFA, necessitating distinct reconstruction methods for non-Bayer patterned CIS with various CFA modes under different lighting conditions. In this work, we propose an efficient unified demosaicing method that can be applied to both conventional Bayer RAW and various non-Bayer CFAs' RAW data in different operation modes. Our Knowledge Learning-based demosaicing model for Adaptive Patterns, namely KLAP, utilizes CFA-adaptive filters for only 1% key filters in the network for each CFA, but still manages to effectively demosaic all the CFAs, yielding comparable performance to the large-scale models. Furthermore, by employing meta-learning during inference (KLAP-M), our model is able to eliminate unknown sensor-generic artifacts in real RAW data, effectively bridging the gap between synthetic images and real sensor RAW. Our KLAP and KLAP-M methods achieved state-of-the-art demosaicing performance in both synthetic and real RAW data of Bayer and non-Bayer CFAs.

An Efficient Adaptive Interpolation for Bayer CFA Demosaicking

Abstract:Demosaicking refers to the image processing of reconstruction full color image from the raw incomplete samples recorded by a single-chip image sensor. For most available demosaicking methods, the image edges are important cues to design the interpolation scheme, and the accuracy of edge estimation has great influence on the reconstructed image quality. In this paper, a block edge estimation method is proposed by considering all the color channels comprehensively. Based on the novel edge estimation method, the proposed algorithm firstly interpolates the G channel pixels with the guidance of the color correlation and edge directions. The interpolated G channel is further used to help the R and B channel interpolations in sequence. In addition, a border pixels interpolation strategy is also presented to overcome the difficulties of the gradient estimation at border positions. Both Kodak and IMAX data set are used to test the validation of the proposed methods. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides superior performances in terms of both objective evaluate and subjective visual quality.

Abstract:Pixel binning-based Quad sensors (mega-pixel resolution camera sensor) offer a promising solution to address the hardware limitations of compact cameras for low-light imaging. However, the binning process leads to reduced spatial resolution and introduces non-Bayer CFA artifacts. In this paper, we propose a Quad CFA-driven remosaicing model that effectively converts noisy Quad Bayer and standard Bayer patterns compatible to existing Image Signal Processor (ISP) without any loss in resolution. To enhance the practicality of the remosaicing model for real-world images affected by mixed noise, we introduce a novel d ual-head j oint r emosaicing and d enoising network (DJRD), which addresses the order of denoising and remosaicing by performing them in parallel. In DJRD, we customize two denoising branches for Quad Bayer and Bayer inputs. These branches model non-local and local dependencies, CFA location, and frequency information using residual convolutional layers, Swin Transformer, and wavelet transform-based CNN. Furthermore, to improve the model's performance on challenging cases, we fine-tune DJRD to handle difficult scenarios by identifying problematic patches through Moire and zipper detection metrics. This post-training phase allows the model to focus on resolving complex image regions. Extensive experiments conducted on simulated and real images in both Bayer and sRGB domains demonstrate that DJRD outperforms competing models by approximately 3 dB, while maintaining the simplicity of implementation without adding any hardware.

Abstract:A large number of color filter arrays (CFAs), periodic or aperiodic, have been proposed. To reconstruct images from all different CFAs and compare their imaging quality, a universal demosaicking method is needed. This paper proposes a new universal demosaicking method based on inter-pixel chrominance capture and optimal demosaicking transformation. It skips the commonly used step to estimate the luminance component at each pixel, and thus, avoids the associated estimation error. Instead, we directly use the acquired CFA color intensity at each pixel as an input component. Two independent chrominance components are estimated at each pixel based on the inter-pixel chrominance in the window, which is captured with the difference of CFA color values between the pixel of interest and its neighbors. Two mechanisms are employed for the accurate estimation: distance-related and edge-sensing weighting to reflect the confidence levels of the inter-pixel chrominance components, and pseudoinverse-based estimation from the components in a window. Then from the acquired CFA color component and two estimated chrominance components, the three primary colors are reconstructed by a linear color transform, which is optimized for the least transform error. Our experiments show that the proposed method is much better than other published universal demosaicking methods.

Abstract:Color filter array (CFA) interpolation, or three-band demosaicking, is a process of interpolating the missing color samples in each band to reconstruct a full color image. In this paper, we are concerned with the challenging problem of multispectral demosaicking, where each band is significantly undersampled due to the increment in the number of bands. Specifically, we demonstrate a frequency-domain analysis of the subsampled color-difference signal and observe that the conventional assumption of highly correlated spectral bands for estimating undersampled components is not precise. Instead, such a spectral correlation assumption is image dependent and rests on the aliasing interferences among the various color-difference spectra. To address this problem, we propose an adaptive spectral-correlation-based demosaicking (ASCD) algorithm that uses a novel anti-aliasing filter to suppress these interferences, and we then integrate it with an intra-prediction scheme to generate a more accurate prediction for the reconstructed image. Our ASCD is computationally very simple, and exploits the spectral correlation property much more effectively than the existing algorithms. Experimental results conducted on two data sets for multispectral demosaicking and one data set for CFA demosaicking demonstrate that the proposed ASCD outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms.
Universal Deep Demosaicking for Sparse Color Filter Arrays

Abstract:Sparse color filter array (CFA) is a potential alternative for the commonly used Bayer CFA, which uses only red (R), green (G), and blue (B) pixels. In sparse CFAs, most pixels are panchromatic (white) ones and only a small percentage of pixels are RGB pixels. Sparse CFAs have the motivation of human visual system and superior low-light photography performance. However, most of the associated demosaicking methods highly depend on synthetic images and are limited to a few specific CFAs. In this paper, we propose a universal demosaicking method for sparse CFAs. Our method has two sequential steps: W-channel recovery and RGB-channel reconstruction. More specifically, it first uses the W channel inpainting network (WCI-Net) to recover the W channel. The first layer of WCI-Net performs the scatter-weighted interpolation, which enables the network to work with various CFAs. Then it employs the differentiable guided filter to reconstruct the RGB channels with the reference of recovered W channel. The differentiable guided filter introduces a binary mask to specify the positions of RGB pixels. So it can handle arbitrary sparse CFAs. Also, it can be trained end-to-end and hence could obtain superior performance but do not overfit the synthetic images. Experiments on clean and noisy images confirm the advantage of the proposed demosaicking method.
Joint Demosaicing and Denoising with Gradient Guidance in Quad Bayer CFA

Abstract:In this study, we introduce a challenging task called Joint Demosaicking and Denoising in Quad Bayer CFA (JDD-QBC). Inspired by the effectiveness of gradient prior in previous tasks, we design a gradient prior extraction algorithm to extract robust gradient profiles directly from Quad Bayer raw images. By leveraging contextual information, our algorithm overcomes the limitations of previous gradient extraction algorithms. Building on this prior, we propose an end-to-end JDD-QBC framework called Gradient Guidance Network (G 2- Net), consisting of two specifically designed components: a Gradient Refinement Branch (GRB) to transform the extracted gradient prior, and a Multi-Scale Backbone Branch (MSB 2 ) to recover all missing values under the guidance of transformed prior. Extensive experiments demonstrate our proposed G 2- Net outperforms state-of-the-art methods across a wide range of noise levels while requiring 50% less memory cost.

Abstract:Deep learning-based demosaicking for the Bayer color filter array (CFA) has great advances. However, most existing demosaicking methods only work in the spatial domain and rarely explore the spectral characteristic of Bayer CFA. In this letter, we first attempt to address Bayer demosaicking in both spatial and frequency domains and propose a spatial-frequency fusion network. It consists of three key modules: spatial-domain branch, frequency-domain branch, and dual-domain fusion. Spatial-domain branch employs the standard convolution to extract local features in the spatial domain, while frequency-domain branch adopts frequency selection to maintain CFA's periodicity and achieve the image-wide receptive field for obtaining global features. Dual-domain fusion integrates the complementary representation of the two types of features. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed network.
Frequency Selection and Merging with Universal Matrices for Color Filter Array Demosaicking

Abstract:In most digital cameras, color filter array (CFA) is used for sampling only one color value for each pixel on CCD. So the other two color values need to be interpolated. The interpolation process is commonly known as demosaicking. In this paper, we discuss the relationship among the down sampled CFA images in frequency domain. According to the correlation, we propose an interpolation method that select specified parts from every down sampled frequency CFA image and merge them together. For more accurate selection, we calculate the minimum error of points in frequency images, and produce some universal matrices to record the source of every point in merging. And then, interpolation is based on the universal matrices. This algorithm is a non-adaptive method and regular in hardware implementation.

Abstract:Pixel binning based Quad sensors have emerged as a promising solution to overcome the hardware limitations of compact cameras in low-light imaging. However, binning results in lower spatial resolution and non-Bayer CFA artifacts. To address these challenges, we propose a dual-head joint remosaicing and denoising network (DJRD), which enables the conversion of noisy Quad Bayer and standard noise-free Bayer pattern without any resolution loss. DJRD includes a newly designed Quad Bayer remosaicing (QB-Re) block, integrated denoising modules based on Swin-transformer and multi-scale wavelet transform. The QB-Re block constructs the convolution kernel based on the CFA pattern to achieve a periodic color distribution in the perceptual field, which is used to extract exact spectral information and reduce color misalignment. The integrated Swin-Transformer and multi-scale wavelet transform capture non-local dependencies, frequency and location information to effectively reduce practical noise. By identifying challenging patches utilizing Moire and zipper detection metrics, we enable our model to concentrate on difficult patches during the post-training phase, which enhances the model's performance in hard cases. Our proposed model outperforms competing models by approximately 3dB, without additional complexity in hardware or software.

New Color Filter Arrays of High Light Sensitivity and High Demosaicking Performance

Abstract:For high light sensitivity, new CFA designs use panchromatic pixels, aka white pixels, that no visible spectrum energy is filtered. Kodak's CFA2.0 has 50% white pixels, but the demosaicking performance is not good. We present in this work a set of new color filter arrays (CFA) of high light sensitivity and high demosaicking performance which were obtained by using a CFA design methodology in the frequency domain. The new patterns are of size 5×5 and come from the same frequency structure, which has one luma in the base band at (0, 0) and four chromas (two conjugate pairs) placed at (4π/5, 2π/5), (- 4π/5, - 2π/5), (2π/5, - 4π/5) and (- 2π/5, 4π/5), respectively. The new patterns are optimized to have only white (panchromatic) and three primary color pixels and the pixels are found to be 40% white, 20% red, 20% green and 20% blue by pixel color constrained optimization. Our demosaicking experiments show that our new CFA patterns outperform Kodak CFA2.0 in both objective and subjective quality.
A Patch Aware Multiple Dictionary Framework For Demosaicing

Abstract:Most digital cameras rely on demosaicing algorithms to restore true color images. Data captured by these cameras is reduced by two thirds because a Color Filter Array (CFA) allows only one particular channel go through at each pixel. This paper proposes a Patch Aware Multiple Dictionary (PAMD) framework for demosaicing. Instead of using a common dictionary, multiple dictionaries are trained for different classes of signals. These class-specific dictionaries comprise a super overcomplete dictionary. The most suitable dictionary would be adaptively selected based on the patch class, determined by the Energy Exclusiveness Feature (EEF) which measures the degree of energy domination in the representation code. In this way, candidate atoms are constrained in a set of atoms with low correlations; and meanwhile, the signal would have sparser representation over this adapted dictionary than over the common one, making the fixed sample rate relatively high and thus, accomplishing satisfying restoration according to the compressive sensing theory. Extensive experiments demonstrated that PAMD outperforms traditional Single Dictionary (SD) based approach as well as leading algorithms in diffusion-based family significantly, with respect to both PSNR and visual quality. Especially, the general artifact by Bayer CFA, Moire Pattern, is dramatically reduced. Furthermore, on several images, it also significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms which are also sparse coding based but very complicated. PAMD is a general framework which can cooperate with existing demosaicing algorithms based on sparse coding.
Adaptive joint demosaicing and Subpixel-based Down-sampling for Bayer image

Abstract:A digital camera provided with a Bayer pattern single sensor needs color interpolation to reconstruct a full color image. To show high resolution image on a lower resolution display, it must then be down-sampled. These two steps influence each other, i.e., the color artifacts introduced in demosaicing may be magnified in subsequent down-sampling process and vice versa. Thanks to the fact that LCD displays are actually composed of separable subpixels, which can be individually addressed to achieve a higher effective apparent resolution. This paper presents an Adaptive Joint Demosaicing and Subpixel-based Down-sampling scheme (AJDSD) for single-sensor camera image, where the subpixel-based down-sampling is adaptively and directly applied in Bayer domain, without the process of demosaicing. Simulation results demonstrate that when compared with conventional “demosaicing-first and down-sampling-later” methods, AJDSD achieves superior performance improvement in terms of computational complexity. As for visual quality, AJDSD is more effective in preserving high frequency details, leading to much sharper and clearer results.
Universal Demosaicking for Interpolation-Friendly RGBW Color Filter Arrays.

Abstract:Interpolation-friendly RGBW color filter arrays (CFAs) and the popular sequential demosaicking contain the idea of computational photography, where the CFA and the demosaicking method are co-designed. Due to the advantages, interpolation-friendly RGBW CFAs have been extensively used in commercial color cameras. However, most associated demosaicking methods rely on strict assumptions or are limited to a few specific CFAs with a given camera. In this paper, we propose a universal demosaicking method for interpolation-friendly RGBW CFAs, which enables the comparison of different CFAs. Our new method belongs to sequential demosaicking, i.e., W channel is interpolated first and then RGB channels are reconstructed with guidance from the interpolated W channel. Specifically, it first interpolates the W channel using only available W pixels followed by an aliasing reduction technique to remove aliasing artifacts. Then it employs an image decomposition model to built relations between W channel and each of RGB channels with known RGB values, which can be easily generalized to the full-size demosaicked image. We apply the linearized alternating direction method (LADM) to solve it with convergence guarantee. Our demosaicking method can be applied to all interpolation-friendly RGBW CFAs with varying color cameras and lighting conditions. Extensive experiments confirm the universal property and advantage of our proposed method with both simulated and real raw images.

Abstract:In digital color imaging, the raw image is typically obtained through a single sensor covered by a color filter array (CFA), which allows only one color component to be measured at each pixel. The procedure to reconstruct a full color image from the raw image is known as demosaicking. Since the CFA may cause irreversible visual artifacts, the CFA and the demosaicking algorithm are crucial to the quality of demosaicked images. Fortunately, the design of CFAs in the frequency domain provides a theoretical approach to handling this issue. However, almost all the existing design methods in the frequency domain involve considerable human effort. In this paper, we present a new method to automatically design CFAs in the frequency domain. Our method is based on the frequency structure representation of mosaicked images. We utilize a multi-objective optimization approach to propose frequency structure candidates, in which the overlap among the frequency components of images mosaicked with the CFA is minimized. Then, we optimize parameters for each candidate, which is formulated as a constrained optimization problem. We use the alternating direction method to solve it. Our parameter optimization method is applicable to arbitrary frequency structures, including those with conjugate replicas of chrominance components. Experiments on benchmark images confirm the advantage of the proposed method.

Abstract:Bayer color filter array (CFA) is the most used color filter pattern which is employed in digital cameras to capture images, necessitating a demosaicking process for generating complete RGB images. Furthermore, the cost associated with demosaicking must not exceed the savings realized using a CFA. This paper presents a low-cost hardware architecture that produces good image quality with reduced color artifacts in the reconstructed images. In the proposed method, Green interpolation is developed by computing weighted color differences and weighted edges in the horizontal and vertical directions of 5 7 mask size. Red and Blue channel information is obtained by computing color difference values from already computed Green values and corresponding pixel values from the Bayer image. Further, two extra line buffers are used to store the previously computed intermediate Green values, which eliminates the memory requirement to store those values. Compared with the existing methods, our method produces good-quality reconstructed images without color artifacts. The proposed method utilizes less hardware than the previous methods.
