Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS), as a promising gas-sensing material, has gained intense interest due to the large surface-to-volume ratio, air-stability, and various active sites for functionalization. However, MoS-based gas sensors still suffer from low sensitivity, slow response, and weak recovery at room temperature, especially for NO. Fabrication heterostructures may be an effective way to modulate the intrinsic electronic properties of MoS nanosheets (NSs), thereby achieving high sensitivity and excellent recovery properties. In this work, we design a novel p-n heteronanostructure on MoS NSs using interface engineering via a simple wet chemical method. After surface modification with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), the MoS/ZnO heteronanostructure is endowed an excellent response (5 ppm nitrogen dioxide, 3050%), which is 11 times greater than that of pure MoS NSs. To the best of our knowledge, such a response value is much higher than the response values reported for MoS gas sensors. Moreover, the fabricated heteronanostructure also improves recoverability to more than 90%, which is rare for room temperature gas sensors. Our optimal sensor also possesses the characteristics of an ultrafast response time of 40 s, a reliable long-term stability within 10 weeks, an excellent selectivity, and a low detection concentration of 50 ppb. The enhanced sensing performances of the MoS/ZnO heteronanostructure can be ascribed to unique 2D/0D heteronanostructures, synergistic effects, and p-n heterojunctions between ZnO NPs and MoS NSs. Such achievements of MoS/ZnO heteronanostructure sensors imply that it is possible to use this novel nanostructure in ultrasensitive sensor applications.

Abstract:The special interactions with NO2 make MoS2 promising sensors. Effective gas adsorption and active sites of MoS2 are crucial for high performance sensors. However, studies of the interactions of MoS2 with gas have been focused on the physisorption of basal planes. In this article, chemisorption modes, with O,O-bidentate or N-monodentate bonding, on the (1-1 0) surfaces of MoS2 structures have been explored in addition to physisorption. The active sites of MoS2 nanosensors have been predicted to be edge sites of (1-1 0) surfaces and further confirmed by the different sensing performances of vertically and parallelly aligned MoS2 hybrids. Chemisorption mode with N-monodentate bonding has also been calculated to be effective for MoS2 nanosensors by a two-probe system simulation and further confirmed by in-situ Raman and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform experiments. High sensitivity and selectivity have also been obtained by the vertical aligned MoS2 hybrids.
Si-doped Graphene Nanosheets for NOx Gas Sensing

Abstract:Si-doped graphene nanosheets (SiGNSs) were constructed via high temperature annealing of the precursor mixture (the graphene oxide and tetraethoxysilane) in a sealed glass ampoule. Si-doped graphene nanosheets annealed at 400 degrees C (SiGNS-400) exhibited excellent NOx sensing ability with a high response value (21.5%-50 ppm of NO2), a fast response (126s), a fast recovery (378s), a broad detectable concentration range (300 ppm similar to 18 ppb) and outstanding selectivity. The doped Si atoms play a key role in NOx sensing. The sensor prepared by SiGNS-400 detected NOx not only in environments with a single harmful gas but also in complex environments containing several harmful gases. The detectable concentration range of the SiGNS-400 sensor decreased with increasing operating temperature.
Pd, Ag decorated MoSi 2 N 4 monolayer: A potential material for reusable CO and NO gas-sensitive material with high sensitivity

Abstract:Recently, a novel MoSi 2 N 4 monolayer has been successfully synthesized (Science 369, 670, 2020) and exhibits excellent photoelectric property. Motivated by this, the adsorption characteristics and sensing properties of four toxic gases (CO, NO, NO 2 , SO 2 ) on the Pd and Ag doped MoSi 2 N 4 (Pd-MSN and Ag-MSN) monolayers were systematically investigated by DFT computations, which aims to explore their feasibility as a potential gas-sensitive material. The studied results show that the Pd-MSN and Ag-MSN monolayers possess high stability due to the large binding strength. The SO 2 molecule is physically adsorbed on the Pd-MSN and Ag-MSN surface with E ads of −0.43 and −0.45 eV. However, the chemisorption of CO, NO, NO 2 on the surface can be found with the E ads of −0.73 eV ∼ −1.24 eV, and the strong surface bonding force is mainly contributed by the significant hybridizations between N-p orbital of Pd/Ag-MSN and p orbitals of CO, NO, NO 2 . Moreover, the Pd-MSN and Ag-MSN monolayers are highly sensitive to CO and NO molecules due to their great change in electrical conductivity and work function. Additionally, the recovery time of NO and CO in Pd-MSN system is respectively predicted to be 0.03 and 0.12 s at room temperature, whereas the rapid desorption of NO and CO from Ag-MSN surface requires the help of high temperature. Therefore, the Pd-MSN monolayer can be a promising gas-sensitive material with excellent sensitivity for the detection of CO and NO. Those studied results can provide a theoretical guidance for the designing of MoSi 2 N 4 based gas sensors.

Abstract:The coupling of MoS2 with In2O3 is a well-known challenge due to the lower stability of MoS2 in the presence of oxygen at high temperature. In the present work, stable mesoporous MoS2@In2O3 composites were designed by a sonochemical reaction and a low temperature hydrothermal method, in which MoS2 nanosheets (NSs) were vertically planted on highly mesoporous In2O3 nanocubes. The mesoporous MoS2@In2O3-II nanocomposite with a MoS2 and In2O3 mass ratio of 1:1 exhibited a high response of 10.3-100 ppm NOx, and ultrafast response time of 1-9 s from 100 to 0.1 ppm. The enhance gas response of MoS2@In2O3-II reveals the synergistic effect of the interfacial transfer of electrons from In2O3 nanocubes to MoS2 NSs, and the highly exposed active edges of vertically aligned MoS2 NSs. The MoS2@In2O3-II sensor is a promising candidate as a gas sensing material due to its excellent structure and outstanding properties at room temperature (RT).
Highly enhanced response of MoS2/porous silicon nanowire heterojunctions to NO2 at room temperature

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide/porous silicon nanowire (MoS2/PSiNW) heterojunctions with different thicknesses as highly-responsive NO2 gas sensors were obtained in the present study. Porous silicon nanowires were fabricated using metal-assisted chemical etching, and seeded with different thicknesses. After that, MoS2 nanosheets were synthesized by sulfurization of direct-current (DC)-magnetic-sputtering Mo films on PSiNWs. Compared with the as-prepared PSiNWs and MoS2, the MoS2/PSiNW heterojunctions exhibited superior gas sensing properties with a low detection concentration of 1ppm and a high response enhancement factor of approximate to 2.3 at room temperature. The enhancement of the gas sensitivity was attributed to the layered nanostructure, which induces more active sites for the absorption of NO2, and modulation of the depletion layer width at the interface. Further, the effects of the deposition temperature in the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process on the gas sensing properties were also discussed, and might be connected to the nucleation and growth of MoS2 nanosheets. Our results indicate that MoS2/PSiNW heterojunctions might be a good candidate for constructing high-performance NO2 sensors for various applications.

Abstract:Endowed with rich terminal groups, good electrical conductivity, and controllable structure, transition metal carbides/nitrides (MXenes) have attracted extensive attention for potential application in gas sensor, but long-standing challenges of the MXenes (titanium carbide as the representative) are their limited selectivity and sensitivity. Herein, a high-active double transition-metal titanium molybdenum carbide (Mo2TiC2Tx) with superstrong surface adsorption (-3.12 eV) for NO2 gas molecule is proposed, and it is further coupled with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) by interface modulation to construct an edge-enriched heterostructure. Due to the synergistic effect of strong adsorption, rich adsorption sites, and coupling interface of Mo2TiC2Tx/MoS2 composite, the as-fabricated Mo2TiC2Tx/MoS2 gas sensor exhibits an outstanding response toward NO2 with high selectivity against various interference gases, which is well supported by density functional theory calculations. Meanwhile, the sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 7.36% ppm(-1), detection limit of 2.5 ppb, and reversibility at room temperature. A portable, wireless NO2 monitoring system is demonstrated for gas leakage searching and dangerous warning based on Mo2TiC2Tx/MoS2 gas sensor. This work facilitates the gas sensing application of MXenes, and provides an avenue for the development of wireless sensing system in environmental monitoring and safety assurance.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a toxic gas species that poses a great threat to the environment and human health. There are still significant challenges in detecting NO2 gas at room temperature. In this work, 2H-MoS2 nanosheets with controlled morphology were grown on the surface of the few-layer Ti3C2Tx MXene by hydrothermal synthesis and formed unique micro architecture, which aims to complete room temperature detection of NO2. The gas sensors based on the 2H-MoS2/ Ti3C2Tx MXene composites have achieved a high response (65.6%) to 100 ppm NO2 gas at room temperature, which is significantly improved compared with the pure MoS2. The excellent NO2 response and selective properties of 2H-MoS2/Ti3C2Tx MXene composites are attributed to the fast channels for carrier transporting and abundant active sites between 2H-MoS2 and few-layer Ti3C2Tx MXene. The improved sensing performance of the two-dimensional (2D) nanocomposite also provides novel avenues for the modification of other 2D materials and the future development of room temperature gas sensors.
Two-dimensional Janus B2P6 as potential gas sensors for NO and NO2 detection: A first-principles study

Abstract:The adsorption properties of novel Janus B2P6 nanosheet with NO and NO2 on both sides are researched by DFT calculation. The results show that the (001) surface exhibits moderate adsorption energies of −0.38 eV for NO and −0.42 eV for NO2. It is found that the electronic properties of Janus B2P6 are affected obviously by NO2 adsorption on the (001) surface, where the bandgap energy is decreased by 1.14 eV and the magnetic moment of 0.93 μ B is induced, indicating Janus B2P6 exhibits better sensitivity to NO2. Note that the recovery times of NO and NO2 are found to be 2.4 and 11.0 μs, facilitating the reuse of devices. And a large diffusion energy barrier is found to ensure the stable transmission of signal. Moreover, under biaxial strain of −2%, the adsorption energy of NO on the (001) surface is greatly reduced to −0.24 eV, favoring the desorption of gas molecules. Verifiably, the combined variation of the electrostatic potential difference and the bonding environment leads to differences in the adsorption behavior. These findings demonstrate the potential of Janus B2P6 as ultra-sensitive strain gas sensors.

Comparative Study on NO2 and H2'S Sensing Mechanisms of Gas Sensors Based on WS2 Nanosheets

Abstract:Due to their high intrinsic conductivity and narrow band gap, nanostructured metal sulfides have attracted considerable attention as promising gas sensing materials. Here, we report the WS2 nanosheets with edge size only about 10 nm synthesized by sulfurization of the WO3 nanomesh. The WS2 nanosheets exhibit p-type sensing characteristics and excellent selectivity to NO2 at a low temperature of 160 degrees C, which can be attributed to the strong physical affinity of the WS2 nanosheets to the NO2 gas molecules. Importantly, by designing sensing experiments under different background gases, we found that WS2 nanosheets do not require oxygen for NO2 sensing, while oxygen is required for H2S sensing. Therefore, based on the adsorption and desorption and charge transfer between WS2 nanosheets and adsorbed gas molecules, we propose different sensing mechanisms of WS2 nanosheets for NO2 and H2S sensing.
Three-Dimensional MoS2/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanosheets/Graphene Quantum Dots Hybrids for High-Performance Room-Temperature NO2 Gas Sensors

Abstract:This study presents three-dimensional (3D) MoS2/reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/graphene quantum dots (GQDs) hybrids with improved gas sensing performance for NO2 sensors. GQDs were introduced to prevent the agglomeration of nanosheets during mixing of rGO and MoS2. The resultant MoS2/rGO/GQDs hybrids exhibit a well-defined 3D nanostructure, with a firm connection among components. The prepared MoS2/rGO/GQDs-based sensor exhibits a response of 23.2% toward 50 ppm NO2 at room temperature. Furthermore, when exposed to NO2 gas with a concentration as low as 5 ppm, the prepared sensor retains a response of 15.2%. Compared with the MoS2/rGO nanocomposites, the addition of GQDs improves the sensitivity to 21.1% and 23.2% when the sensor is exposed to 30 and 50 ppm NO2 gas, respectively. Additionally, the MoS2/rGO/GQDs-based sensor exhibits outstanding repeatability and gas selectivity. When exposed to certain typical interference gases, the MoS2/rGO/GQDs-based sensor has over 10 times higher sensitivity toward NO2 than the other gases. This study indicates that MoS2/rGO/GQDs hybrids are potential candidates for the development of NO2 sensors with excellent gas sensitivity.

Functionalized Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) Monolayer as Efficient Nanosensor Towards Toxic Nitrogen Containing Gases

Abstract:Gas-sensing properties of toxic nitrogen-containing gases (e.g., NO and NO2) on selected transition metals (TMs) functionalized molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) monolayer were investigated using a combination of density-functional theory (DFT) and non-equilibrium Green's functions (NEGF) formalisms. Pristine MoS2 adsorbed NO, and NO2 with relatively weak adsorption energies of - 0.11 and – 0.19 eV, respectively. To enhance the adsorption mechanism, five doping states were considered, such as (i) Sulfur vacancy "VS", (ii) Mn, (iii) Fe, (iv) Co, and (v) Ni dopants substituting the S-site in MoS2. We found that S-vacancy, Mn-, Fe-, Co-, and Ni-doped MoS2 resulted into significantly strong adsorption energies of -2.59 (-2.76), -2.16 (-1.17), -2.87 (-1.85), -3.06 (-1.61), and -1.97 (-0.90) eV for NO (NO2), respectively. The results of the electronic structure calculations showed that the adsorption of the NO, and NO2 drastically changed the magnetic states of the substrate, for instance from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic (FM) semiconducting states (e.g., VS and Ni-doping) and from FM to either antiferromagnetic (AFM) or paramagnetic semiconducting states (e.g., Mn- or Ni-doping, respectively). The results of current-voltage (IV) characteristics showed that Co- and Ni-doping yielded the optimal sensor response and was attributed to the changes between two extreme magnetic states; for instance, from FM to paramagnetic semiconducting states and vis versa (e.g., Co-, and Ni-doping, respectively). Our refined study of selectivity using seven gases (i.e., CO, CO2, N2, O2, H2, NO, and NO2) demonstrated that MoS2:Co and MoS2:Ni are potential materials for disposable gas sensors for the capture and the detection of toxic NO and NO2.

Highly Active and Porous Single-Crystal In2O3 Nanosheet for NOx Gas Sensor with Excellent Response at Room Temperature

Abstract:Porous single-crystal In2O3 nanosheet (ps-In2O3 NS) was designed and prepared through a method of calcination after liquid reflux. Compared with the other In2O3 with different surface morphologies, the ps-In2O3 NS has gas sensing properties towards NOx at room temperature. Gas sensing data strongly demonstrate that this porous single-crystal In2O3 nanosheet exhibits a distinguished response (89.48) and fast response time (16.6 s) to 97.0 ppm NOx. Meanwhile, the ps-In2O3 NS sensor presents a favorable linearity and good selectivity, and the detection of NOx is down to ppb levels at room temperature. The enhancement of the sensing response is attributed to the porous, single-crystal and two dimensional nanosheet structure of the synthesized ps-In2O3 NS, which has much higher BET surface area, effective gas diffusion of slit pores and thus provides more active sites for the reaction of NOx with surface-adsorbed oxygen ions. This work would be important for the low-cost and high performance of the In2O3 material with highly promising applications in gas sensors.
Vertically aligned MoS 2 /ZnO nanowires nanostructures with highly enhanced NO 2 sensing activities

Abstract:The MoS2/ZnO nanostructures with MoS2 thickness of ∼100 nm showed a maximum response of 31.2% to 50 ppm NO2 at the optimist temperature. The synthesized MoS2/ZnONWs nanostructures also exhibited excellent sensitivity, recovery, repeatability, selectivity and with relatively low working temperatures, with a low detection concentration of 200 ppb.

Abstract:Rapid and ultrasensitive detection of toxic gases at room temperature is highly desired in health protection but presents grand challenges in the sensing materials reported so far. Here, we present a gas sensor based on novel zero dimensional (0D)/two dimensional (2D) indium oxide (In2O3)/titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) Schottky heterostructures with a high surface area and rich oxygen vacancies for parts per billion (ppb) level nitrogen dioxide (NO2) detection at room temperature. The In2O3/Ti3C2Tx gas sensor exhibits a fast response time (4 s), good response (193.45% to 250 ppb NO2), high selectivity, and excellent cycling stability. The rich surface oxygen vacancies play the role of active sites for the adsorption of NO2 molecules, and the Schottky junctions effectively adjust the charge-transfer behavior through the conduction tunnel in the sensing material. Furthermore, In2O3 nanoparticles almost fully cover the Ti3C2Tx nanosheets which can avoid the oxidation of Ti3C2Tx, thus contributing to the good cycling stability of the sensing materials. This work sheds light on the sensing mechanism of heterojunction nanostructures and provides an efficient pathway to construct high-performance gas sensors through the rational design of active sites.
Template Based Synthesis of Porous Graphdiyne Nanosheet for Reversible and Fast NO2 Detection by UV Irradiation

Abstract:Two-dimensional graphdiyne (GDY) formed by sp and sp2 hybridized carbon has been found to be an efficient toxic gas sensing material by density functional theory (DFT). However, little experimental research concerning its gas sensing capability has been reported owing to the complex preparation process and harsh experimental conditions. Herein, porous GDY nanosheets are successfully synthesized through a facile solvothermal synthesis technique by using CuO microspheres (MSs) as both template and source of catalyst. The porous GDY nanosheets exhibit a broadband optical absorption, rendering it suitable for the light-driven optoelectronic gas sensing applications. The GDY-based gas sensor was demonstrated to have excellent reversible to NO2 behaviors at 25 °C for the first time. More importantly, higher response value and faster response-recovery time once exposed to NO2 gas molecules are achieved by the illumination of UV light. In this way, our work paves the way for the exploration of GDY-based gas detection experimentally.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is one of the most hazardous toxic pollutants to human health and the environment. However, deficiencies of low sensitivity and poor selectivity at room temperature (RT) restrain the application of NO2 sensors. Herein, the edge-enriched MoS2 nanosheets modified porous nanosheets-assembled three-dimensional (3D) In2O3 microflowers have been synthesized to improve the sensitivity and selectivity of NO2 detection at RT. The results show that the In2O3/MoS2 composite sensor exhibits a response as high as 343.09-5 ppm NO2, which is 309 and 72.5 times higher than the sensors based on the pristine MoS2 and In2O3. The composite sensor also shows short recovery time (37 s), excellent repeatability and long-term stability. Furthermore, the response of the In2O3/MoS2 sensor to NO2 is at least 30 times higher than that of other gases, proving the ultrahigh selectivity of the sensor. The outstanding sensing performance of the In2O3/MoS2 sensor can be attributed to the synergistic effect and abundant active sites originating from the p-n heterojunction, exposed edge structures and the designed 2D/3D hybrid structure. The strategy proposed herein is expected to provide a useful reference for the development of high-performance RT NO2 sensors.
