Abstract:The presence of massive, compact, quiescent galaxies at z>2 presents a major challenge for theoretical models of galaxy formation and evolution. Using one of the deepest large public near-IR surveys to date, we investigate in detail the correlations between star formation and galaxy structural parameters (size, stellar mass, and surface density) from z=2 to the present. At all redshifts, massive quiescent galaxies (i.e. those with little or no star formation) occupy the extreme high end of the surface density distribution and follow a tight mass-size correlation, while star-forming galaxies show a broad range of both densities and sizes. Conversely, galaxies with the highest surface densities comprise a nearly-homogeneous population with little or no ongoing star formation, while less dense galaxies exhibit high star-formation rates and varying levels of dust obscuration. Both the sizes and surface densities of quiescent galaxies evolve strongly from z=2-0; we parameterize this evolution for both populations with simple power law functions and present best-fit parameters for comparison to future theoretical models. Higher-mass quiescent galaxies undergo faster structural evolution, consistent with previous results. Interestingly, star-forming galaxies' sizes and densities evolve at rates similar to those of quiescent galaxies. It is therefore possible that the same physical processes drive the structural evolution of both populations, suggesting that "dry mergers" may not be the sole culprit in this size evolution.

Abstract:Galaxies represent the visible fabric of the Universe and there has been considerable progress recently in both observational and theoretical studies. The underlying goal is to understand the present-day diversity of galaxy forms, masses and luminosities in the context of theories for the growth of structure. Popular models predict the bulk of the galaxy population assembled recently, in apparent agreement with optical and near-infrared observations. However, detailed conclusions rely crucially on the choice of the cosmological parameters. Although the star formation history has been sketched to early times, uncertainties remain, particularly in connecting to the underlying mass assembly rate. I discuss the expected progress in determining the cosmological parameters and address the question of which observations would most accurately check contemporary models for the origin of the Hubble sequence. The new generation of ground-based and future space-based large telescopes, equipped with instrumentation appropriate for studying the resolved properties of distant galaxies, offer the potential of substantial progress in this field.

Abstract:The evolution of the galaxy stellar mass function is especially useful to test the current model of galaxy formation. Observational data have revealed a few inconsistencies with predictions from the.CDM model. For example, most massive galaxies have already been observed at very high redshifts, and they have experienced only mild evolution since then. In conflict with this, semi-analytical models (SAMs) of galaxy formation predict an insufficient number of massive galaxies at high redshift and a rapid evolution between redshift 1 and 0. In addition, there is a strong correlation between star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass for star-forming galaxies, which can be roughly reproduced with the model, but with a normalization that is too low at high redshift. Furthermore, the stellar mass density obtained from the integral of the cosmic star formation history is higher than the measured one by a factor of 2. In this paper, we study these issues using an SAM that includes (1) cold gas accretion in massive halos at high redshift; (2) tidal stripping of stellar mass from satellite galaxies; and (3) an evolving stellar initial mass function (IMF; bottom-light) with a higher gas recycle fraction. Our results show that the combined effects from (1) and (2) can predict sufficiently massive galaxies at high redshifts and reproduce their mild evolution at low redshift, while the combined effects of (1) and (3) can reproduce the correlation between SFR and stellar mass for star-forming galaxies across a wide range of redshifts. A bottom-light/top-heavy stellar IMF could partly resolve the conflict between the stellar mass density and cosmic star formation history.
Obscured star formation in clusters at z=1.6-2.0: massive galaxy formation and the reversal of the star formation-density relation

Abstract:Clusters of galaxies at z>1 are expected to be increasingly active sites of star formation. To test this, an 850um survey was undertaken of eight high-redshift clusters at z=1.6-2.0 using SCUBA-2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Mid-infrared properties were used to identify 53 probable counterparts to 45 SCUBA-2 sources with colours that suggested that they were cluster members. This uncovered a modest overdensity of 850um sources with far-infrared luminosities LIR>10^12Lo (SFR>100Mo/yr) and colours consistent with being cluster members of a factor of 4+/-1 within the central 1Mpc radius of the clusters. The submillimetre photometry of these galaxies was used to estimate the total cluster star formation rates. These showed that the mass-normalised rates in the clusters are two orders of magnitude higher than in local systems, evolving as (1+z)^(5.5+/-0.6). This rapid evolution means that the mass-normalised star formation rates in these clusters matched that of average halos in the field at z~1.8+/-0.2 marking the epoch where the local star formation-density relation reverses in massive halos. The estimated stellar masses of the cluster submillimetre galaxies suggest that their descendants will be amongst the most massive galaxies in z~0 clusters. This reinforces the suggestion that the majority of the massive early-type galaxy population in z~0 clusters were likely to have formed at z>1.5-2 through very active, but dust-obscured, starburst events.

Abstract:Recent JWST observations have revealed an unexpected abundance of massive galaxy candidates in the early Universe, extending further in redshift and to lower luminosity than what had previously been found by sub-millimeter surveys. These JWST candidates have been interpreted as challenging the $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, but, so far, they have mostly relied only on rest-frame ultraviolet data and lacked spectroscopic confirmation of their redshifts. Here we report a systematic study of 36 massive dust-obscured galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts between $z_{\rm spec}=5-9$ from the JWST FRESCO survey. We find no tension with the $\Lambda$CDM model in our sample. However, three ultra-massive galaxies (log$M_{\star}/M_{\odot}$ $\gtrsim11.0$) require an exceptional fraction of 50% of baryons converted into stars -- two to three times higher than even the most efficient galaxies at later epochs. The contribution from an active nucleus is unlikely because of their extended emission. Ultra-massive galaxies account for as much as 17% of the total cosmic star formation rate density at $z\sim5-6$.

UGC8802: A Massive Disk Galaxy in Formation

Abstract:We report new observations of the galaxy UGC8802 obtained through the GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey (GASS), which show this galaxy to be in a remarkable evolutionary state. UGC8802 (GASS35981) is a disk galaxy with stellar mass M-* = 2 x 10(10) M-circle dot, which appears to contain an additional 2.1 x 10(10) M-circle dot of HI gas. New millimeter observations with the IRAM 30 m telescope indicate a molecular gas mass only a tenth this large. Using deep long-slit spectroscopy, we examine the spatially resolved star formation rate (SFR) and metallicity profiles of GASS35981 for clues to its history. We find that the star formation surface density in this galaxy is low (Sigma(SFR) = 0.003 M-circle dot yr(-1) kpc(-2)) and that the star formation is spread remarkably evenly across the galaxy. The low molecular gas masses measured in our three IRAM pointings are largely consistent with the total star formation measured within the same apertures. Our MMT long-slit spectrum reveals a sharp drop in metallicity in the outer disk of GASS35981. The ratio of current SFR to existing stellar mass surface density in the outer disk is extremely high, implying that all the stars must have formed within the past similar to 1 Gyr. At current SFRs, however, GASS35981 will not consume its Hi reservoir for another 5-7 Gyr. Despite its exceptionally large gas fraction for a galaxy this massive, GASS35981 has a regular rotation curve and exhibits no sign of a recent interaction or merger. We speculate that GASS35981 may have acquired its gas directly from the intergalactic medium, and that GASS35981 and other similar galaxies identified in the GASS survey may provide rare local glimpses of gas accretion processes that were more common during the prime epoch of disk galaxy formation at z similar to 1.

Abstract:The article compares traditional coefficients of thermodynamic activity as a parameter related to individual chemical species to newly introduced reduced chaotic temperatures as system characteristics, both regarding their usage in thermodynamic simulation of open chemical systems. Logical and mathematical backgrounds of both approaches are discussed. It is shown that usage of reduced chaotic temperatures and the Method of Chemical Dynamics to calculate chemical and phase composition in open chemical systems is much less costly, easier to perform and potentially leads to better precision.

Intense Star-formation and Feedback at High Redshift: Spatially-resolved Properties of the z=2.6 Submillimeter Galaxy SMMJ14011+0252

Abstract:We present a detailed analysis of the spatially-resolved properties of the lensed submillimeter galaxy SMMJ14011+0252 at z=2.56, combining deep near-infrared integral-field data obtained with SPIFFI on the VLT with other multi-wavelength data sets. The broad characteristics of SMMJ14011+0252 are in agreement with what is expected for the early evolution of local massive spheroidal galaxies. From continuum and line flux, velocity, and dispersion maps, we measure the kinematics, star-formation rates, gas densities, and extinction for individual subcomponents. The star formation intensity is similar to low-redshift ``maximal starbursts'', while the line fluxes and the dynamics of the emission line gas provide direct evidence for a starburst-driven wind with physical properties very similar to local superwinds. We also find circumstantial evidence for "self-regulated" star formation within J1. The relative velocity of the bluer companion J2 yields a dynamical mass estimate for J1 within about 20 kpc, M_dyn \sim 1\times 10^{11} M_sun. The relative metallicity of J2 is 0.4 dex lower than in J1n/s, suggesting different star formation histories. SED fitting of the continuum peak J1c confirms and substantiates previous suggestions that this component is a z=0.25 interloper. When removing J1c, the stellar continuum and H-alpha line emission appear well aligned spatially in two individual components J1n and J1s, and coincide with two kinematically distinct regions in the velocity map, which might well indicate a merging system. This highlights the close similarity between SMGs and ULIRGs, which are often merger-driven maximal starbursts, and suggests that the intrinsic mechanisms of star-formation and related feedback are similar to low-redshift strongly star-forming systems.

A semi-analytical perspective on massive red galaxies: I. Assembly history, environment & redshift evolution

Abstract:Investigating the assembly history of the most massive and passive galaxies will enhance our understanding of why galaxies exhibit such a remarkable diversity in structure and morphology. In this paper, we simultaneously investigate the assembly history and redshift evolution of semi-analytically modelled galaxy properties of central galaxies between 0.56 < z < 4.15, alongside their connection to their halos as a function of large-scale environment. We extract sub-samples of galaxies from a mock catalogue representative for the BOSS-CMASS sample, which includes the most massive and passively evolving system known today. Utilising typical galaxy properties such as star formation rate, (g-i) colour, or cold gas-phase metallicity (Zcold), we track the redshift evolution of these properties across the main progenitor trees. We present results on galaxy and halo properties, including their growth and clustering functions. Our findings indicate that galaxies in the highest stellar and halo mass regimes are least metal-enriched (using Zcold as a proxy) and consistently exhibit significantly larger black hole masses and higher clustering amplitudes compared to sub-samples selected by e.g. colour or star formation rate. This population forms later and also retains large reservoirs of cold gas. In contrast, galaxies in the intermediate and lower stellar/halo mass regimes consume their cold gas at higher redshift and were among the earliest and quickest to assemble. We observe a clear trend where the clustering of the galaxies selected according to their Zcold-values (either low-Zcold or high-Zcold) depends on the density of their location within the large-scale environment. We assume that in particular galaxies in the low/high-Zcold sub-samples form and evolve through distinct evolutionary channels, which are predetermined by their location within the large-scale environment of the cosmic web.

Abstract:The cold dark matter model has become the leading theoretical picture for the formation of structure in the Universe. This model, together with the theory of cosmic inflation, makes a clear prediction for the initial conditions for structure formation and predicts that structures grow hierarchically through gravitational instability. Testing this model requires that the precise measurements delivered by galaxy surveys can be compared to robust and equally precise theoretical calculations. Here we present a simulation of the growth of dark matter structure using 2,1603 particles, following them from redshift z = 127 to the present in a cube-shaped region 2.230 billion lightyears on a side. In postprocessing, we also follow the formation and evolution of the galaxies and quasars. We show that baryon-induced features in the initial conditions of the Universe are reflected in distorted form in the low-redshift galaxy distribution, an effect that can be used to constrain the nature of dark energy with future generations of observational surveys of galaxies.

The Structure of Massive Star-Forming Galaxies from JWST and ALMA: Dusty, High Redshift Disk Galaxies

Abstract:We present an analysis of the JWST NIRCam and MIRI morphological properties of 80 massive ($\log_{10}(M_\ast[M_{\odot}])$=11.2$\pm$0.1) dusty star-forming galaxies at $z$$=$2.7$^{+1.2}_{-0.7}$, identified as sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) by ALMA, that have been observed as part of the JWST PRIMER project. To compare the structure of these massive, active galaxies to more typical less actively star-forming galaxies, we define two comparison samples. The first of 850 field galaxies matched in specific star-formation rate and redshift and the second of 80 field galaxies matched in stellar mass. We identify 20$\pm$5% of the SMGs as candidate late-stage major mergers, a further 40$\pm$10% as potential minor mergers and 40$\pm$10% which have comparatively undisturbed disk-like morphologies, with no obvious massive neighbours. These rates are comparable to those for the field samples and indicate that the majority of the sub-millimetre-detected galaxies are not late-stage major mergers, but have interaction rates similar to the less-active population at $z$$\sim$2-3. We establish that SMGs have comparable near-infrared sizes to the less active populations, but exhibit lower Sérsic indices, consistent with bulge-less disks and have more structured morphologies at 2$\mu$m relative to 4$\mu$m. We find evidence for dust reddening as the origin of the morphological differences between the populations, identifying a strong correlation between the F200W$-$F444W pixel colour and the 870$\mu$m surface brightness. We conclude that SMGs and less active galaxies at the same epochs share a common disk-like structure, but the weaker bulge components of the SMGs results in a lower dynamical stability. Consequently, instabilities triggered either secularly or by minor external perturbations result in higher levels of activity (and dust content) in SMGs compared to typical star-forming galaxies. Abstract:We analyse new SCUBA-2 submillimeter and archival SPIRE far-infrared imaging of a z=1.62 cluster, Cl0218.3-0510, which lies in the UKIDSS/UDS field of the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey. Combining these tracers of obscured star formation activity with the extensive photometric and spectroscopic information available for this field, we identify 31 far-infrared/submillimeter-detected probable cluster members with bolometric luminosities >1e12 Lo and show that by virtue of their dust content and activity, these represent some of the reddest and brightest galaxies in this structure. We exploit Cycle-1 ALMA submillimeter continuum imaging which covers one of these sources to confirm the identification of a SCUBA-2-detected ultraluminous star-forming galaxy in this structure. Integrating the total star-formation activity in the central region of the structure, we estimate that it is an order of magnitude higher (in a mass-normalised sense) than clusters at z~0.5-1. However, we also find that the most active cluster members do not reside in the densest regions of the structure, which instead host a population of passive and massive, red galaxies. We suggest that while the passive and active populations have comparable near-infrared luminosities at z=1.6, M(H)~-23, the subsequent stronger fading of the more active galaxies means that they will evolve into passive systems at the present-day which are less luminous than the descendants of those galaxies which were already passive at z~1.6 (M(H)~-20.5 and M(H)~-21.5 respectively at z~0). We conclude that the massive galaxy population in the dense cores of present-day clusters were already in place at z=1.6 and that in Cl0218.3-0510 we are seeing continuing infall of less extreme, but still ultraluminous, star-forming galaxies onto a pre-existing structure.

Abstract:The formation of galaxies by gradual hierarchical co-assembly of baryons and cold dark matter halos is a fundamental paradigm underpinning modern astrophysics and predicts a strong decline in the number of massive galaxies at early cosmic times. Extremely massive quiescent galaxies (stellar masses $>10^{11}$ M$_\odot$) have now been observed as early as 1-2 billions years after the Big Bang; these are extremely constraining on theoretical models as they form 300-500 Myr earlier and only some models can form massive galaxies this early. Here we report on the spectroscopic observations with the James Webb Space Telescope of a massive quiescent galaxy ZF-UDS-7329 at redshift 3.205 $\pm$ 0.005 that eluded deep ground-based spectrscopy, is significantly redder than typical and whose spectrum reveals features typical of much older stellar populations. Detailed modelling shows the stellar population formed around 1.5 billion years earlier in time (z ~ 11) at an epoch when dark matter halos of sufficient hosting mass have not yet assembled in the standard scenario. This observation may point to the presence of undetected populations of early galaxies and the possibility of significant gaps in our understanding of early stellar populations, galaxy formation and/or the nature of dark matter.

Abstract:We review the steps which have led to the discovery of a widespread population of objects at z = 3 with many of the characteristics which we expect for primeval galaxies, and emphasize in particular the advantages of a colour selection technique which targets the Lyman discontinuity at 912 Angstroms. Star forming galaxies at z = 3 resemble local starbursts, although they are typically more luminous by more than one order of magnitude. The ultraviolet continuum is dominated by the integrated light of O and early B type stars and shows prominent interstellar absorption lines which are often blueshifted relative to the systemic velocity of the galaxy, indicating highly energetic outflows in the interstellar medium. Lyman alpha emission is generally weak, probably as a result of resonant scattering. The spectral slope of the ultraviolet continuum and the strength of the Hbeta emission line, which we have detected in a few cases with pilot observations in the infrared K band, suggest that some interstellar dust is already present in these young galaxies and that it attenuates their UV luminosities by a factor of about 3. The efficiency of our photometric selection technique has allowed us to establish that large scale concentrations of galaxies were already in place at z = 3, possibly the precursors of galaxy clusters as they as they were beginning to decouple from the Hubble expansion. In the context of Cold Dark Matter models of structure formation, the observed clustering of the z~3 galaxies suggests that they are associated with dark matter halos of mass greater than 10^12 solar masses. We conclude by pointing out the need for infrared space observatories, such as the proposed Next Generation Space Telescope, for pushing the quest for the origin of galaxies beyond z=5.

Abstract:We examine the morphological and kinematical properties of SPT-2147, a strongly lensed, massive, dusty, star-forming galaxy at $z = 3.762$. Combining data from JWST, HST, and ALMA, we study the galaxy's stellar emission, dust continuum and gas properties. The imaging reveals a central bar structure in the stars and gas embedded within an extended disc with a spiral arm-like feature. The kinematics confirm the presence of the bar and of the regularly rotating disc. Dynamical modeling yields a dynamical mass, ${M}_{\rm dyn} = (9.7 \pm 2.0) \times 10^{10}$ ${\rm M}_{\odot}$, and a maximum rotational velocity to velocity dispersion ratio, $V / \sigma = 9.8 \pm 1.2$. From multi-band imaging we infer, via SED fitting, a stellar mass, ${M}_{\star} = (6.3 \pm 0.9) \times 10^{10}$ $\rm{M}_{\odot}$, and a star formation rate, ${\rm SFR} = 781 \pm 99$ ${\rm M_{\odot} yr^{-1}}$, after correcting for magnification. Combining these measurements with the molecular gas mass, we derive a baryonic-to-total mass ratio of ${M}_{\rm bar} / {M}_{\rm dyn} = 0.9 \pm 0.2$ within 4.0 kpc. This finding suggests that the formation of bars in galaxies begins earlier in the history of the Universe than previously thought and can also occur in galaxies with elevated gas fractions.

Accelerated Structure Formation: the Early Emergence of Massive Galaxies and Clusters of Galaxies

Abstract:Galaxies in the early universe appear to have grown too big too fast, assembling into massive, monolithic objects more rapidly than anticipated in the hierarchical $\Lambda$CDM structure formation paradigm. The available photometric data are consistent with there being a population of massive galaxies that form early ($z \gtrsim 10$) and quench rapidly over a short ($\lesssim 1$ Gyr) timescale, consistent with the traditional picture for the evolution of giant elliptical galaxies. Similarly, kinematic observations as a function of redshift show that massive spirals and their scaling relations were in place at early times. Explaining the early emergence of massive galaxies requires either an extremely efficient conversion of baryons into stars at $z>10$ or a more rapid assembly of baryons than anticipated in $\Lambda$CDM. The latter possibility was explicitly predicted in advance by MOND. We discuss some further predictions of MOND, such as the early emergence of clusters of galaxies and early reionization.

Abstract:We present individual star-formation histories of $\sim3000$ massive galaxies (log($\mathrm{M_*/M_{\odot}}$) > 10.5) from the Large Early Galaxy Astrophysics Census (LEGA-C) spectroscopic survey at a lookback time of $\sim$7 billion years and quantify the population trends leveraging 20hr-deep integrated spectra of these $\sim$ 1800 star-forming and $\sim$ 1200 quiescent galaxies at 0.6 < $z$ < 1.0. Essentially all galaxies at this epoch contain stars of age < 3 Gyr, in contrast with older massive galaxies today, facilitating better recovery of previous generations of star formation at cosmic noon and earlier. We conduct spectro-photometric analysis using parametric and non-parametric Bayesian SPS modeling tools - Bagpipes and Prospector to constrain the median star-formation histories of this mass-complete sample and characterize population trends. A consistent picture arises for the late-time stellar mass growth when quantified as $t_{50}$ and $t_{90}$, corresponding to the age of the universe when galaxies formed 50\% and 90\% of their total stellar mass, although the two sets of models disagree at the earliest formation times (e.g. $t_{10}$). Our results reveal trends in both stellar mass and stellar velocity dispersion as in the local universe - low-mass galaxies with shallower potential wells grow their stellar masses later in cosmic history compared to high-mass galaxies. Unlike local quiescent galaxies, the median duration of late-time star-formation ($\tau_{SF,late}$ = $t_{90}$ - $t_{50}$) does not consistently depend on the stellar mass. This census sets a benchmark for future deep spectro-photometric studies of the more distant universe.

Abstract:The advent of 8m-class telescopes has made galaxies at 1 < z < 4 relatively easy to detect and study. This is a brief and incomplete review of some of the recent results to emerge from surveys at these redshifts. After describing different strategies for finding galaxies at z >~ 1, and the differences (and similarities) in the resulting galaxy samples, I summarize what is known about the spatial clustering of star-forming galaxies at z >~ 1. Optically selected galaxies are the main focus of this review, but in the final section I discuss the connection between optical and sub-mm samples, and argue that the majority of the 850 micron background may have been produced by known optically selected populations at high redshift. Among the new results presented are the dust-corrected luminosity function of Lyman-break galaxies at z~3, the estimated contribution to the 850 micron background from optically selected galaxies at 1<z<5, revised estimates of the spatial clustering strength of Lyman-break galaxies at z~3, and an estimate of the clustering strength of star-forming galaxies at z~1 derived from a new spectroscopic sample of ~800 galaxies with <z> = 1.0, sigma_z = 0.10.

Abstract:Understanding the rapid formation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the early universe requires an understanding of how stellar mass grows in the host galaxies. Here, we perform an analysis of rest-frame optical spectra and imaging from JWST of two quasar host galaxies at z>6 which exhibit Balmer absorption lines. These features in the stellar continuum indicate a lack of young stars, similar to low-redshift post-starburst galaxies whose star formation was recently quenched. We find that the stellar mass (log(M_* / M_sun) > 10.6) of each quasar host grew in a starburst episode at redshift 7 or 8. One of the targets exhibits little ongoing star formation, as evidenced by the photometric signature of the Balmer break and a lack of spatially resolved H-alpha emission, placing it well below the star formation main sequence at z = 6. The other galaxy is transitioning to a quiescent phase; together, the two galaxies represent the most distant massive post-starburst galaxies known. The maturity of these two galaxies is further supported by the stellar velocity dispersions of their host galaxies, placing them slightly above the upper end of the local M_BH - sigma_* relation. The properties of our two post-starburst galaxies, each hosting an active SMBH with log(M_BH / M_sun) > 9, suggests that black holes played a major role in shaping the formation of the first massive galaxies in the Universe.
