Parental Academic Socialization and Youth Adjustments: A Comparison of Korean Youth in South Korea, China, and the United States

Abstract:Although parental academic socialization may be a product of culture, ethnic/racial minority status may play a significant role, above and beyond the impact of culture, in shaping parental academic socialization and its implications for youth adjustments. This study examined Korean youth living in South Korea (N = 524, Mage = 14.98, SD = 1.45, 50.1% female), China (N = 267, Mage = 15.24, SD = 1.66, 58.9% female), and the U.S. (N = 408, Mage = 14.76, SD = 1.91, 47.3% female) who share the same heritage culture but have different social positions (majority or minority). Korean youth as an ethnic/racial minority in the U.S. or China reported higher parental academic socialization than those in South Korea, supporting a significant role of social positions in how parents practice academic socialization. This study also found that the distinct practices of academic socialization function differently in youth adjustment. Parental commitment to education, parental involvement, and autonomy support were positively associated with youth's school engagement, but achievement-oriented psychological control was associated with more depressive symptoms and antisocial behaviors. These associations did not differ across the three samples. Some nuanced differences also emerged. Parental commitment to education was associated with higher grades in Korean Chinese (but not Korean American) youth, and achievement-oriented psychological control was associated with lower school engagement among Korean Chinese (but not South Korean) youth and higher grades among South Korean (but not Korean American) youth. These findings highlight the role of academic socialization as an adaptive strategy for ethnic/racial minorities to succeed in host societies and the generally universal role of parental academic socialization in youth adjustments.
Role of Family Acculturation Stress in Career Development Among Adolescents From Multicultural Families in Korea

Abstract:Journal of Career Development, Ahead of Print. Career indecision is a substantial challenge for multicultural adolescents in South Korea. This study investigated the role of acculturation stress in adolescents and their parents in multicultural families on career decisions in South Korea. Perceived career barriers by adolescents and career-related behaviors of their parents were included as mediators. Using national panel data from 1695 cases longitudinally collected over the 3 years, the mediation analysis was conducted. The results showed that acculturation stress experienced by both adolescents and parents negatively predicted the adolescents' career decisions. In addition, a sequential mediation effect of parental career-related behaviors and adolescents' career barriers was found in the relationship between parental acculturation stress and adolescents' career decisions. These results highlight the importance of acculturative stress experienced by families, and not just by individuals, in understanding the career development of multicultural adolescents. The implications of this study's findings are discussed.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among psychological characteristics (stress, depression, and anxiety), parent-child relationships (communication styles and authoritarian parenting), and coping strategies (social support, problem-solving, and avoidance) of adolescents from multicultural families. For the research survey, the data was collected through self-reporting questionnaires distributed to adolescents from multicultural families in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, and Jeolla provinces. The sample of 179 adolescents were analyzed by using t-test, ANOVA, and hierarchical regression with SPSS 20.0. The major findings are as follows: 1) The parent-child's open communication style and the seeking of social support as a coping strategy were significant predictors of the child’s level of school adjustment. 2) When coping strategy variables were included in the model, the parent-child's open communication style was no longer significant, and only the seeking of social support as a coping strategy was a significant predictor in the model. These results indicated that networking in a social support system in school and a positive parental relationship are both necessary to enhance the school adjustment of adolescents from multicultural families in Korea.

Abstract:Many Chinese American parents desire for their children to take on both Chinese heritage and mainstream American values and behaviors, referred to as their bicultural socialization beliefs. Parents' development of such beliefs appears linked with parent-adolescent conflict concerning cultural values, yet the direction and temporal ordering of this relation is unclear. The present study aimed to resolve discrepancies in the literature through examining the bidirectional relations between Chinese American parents' bicultural socialization beliefs and the acculturative family conflict they experience with their children. Relations were examined across two developmental periods of the children: adolescence and emerging adulthood. Data came from a longitudinal study of 444 Chinese American families from the west coast of the United States. Mothers and fathers reported on their own bicultural socialization beliefs for their children. Mothers, fathers, and adolescents/emerging adults each reported on levels of acculturative family conflict within mother-adolescent and father-adolescent dyads. Higher levels of family conflict in adolescence consistently predicted greater increases in parents' desires for their children to be bicultural in emerging adulthood. Results have implications for interventions with Chinese American families and demonstrate Chinese American parents as capable of adapting and growing from challenging, culturally based interactions with their children. Effects of Perceived Discrimination on Multicultural Adolescents’ Ethnic Identity Conflict: A Moderated Mediation Effect of Parent-Child Open Communication through Bicultural Competence

Abstract:This study examined the effects of perceived discrimination on multicultural adolescents regarding feelings of conflict over their ethnic identity by investigating the moderating role of father-child open communication and mother-child open communication mediated by bicultural competence. A total of 234 middle school students (grades 7-8; 139 girls and 95 boys) from multicultural families, from which the father is Korean and the mother is not, participated in the study. Data was collected through an online self-report questionnaire and was analyzed via SPSS 26.0 and Process (Version 4.1) MACRO. The results can be summarized as follows. First, bicultural competence mediated the effects of perceived discrimination on feelings of conflict over one’s ethnic identity. Enhanced bicultural competence resulting from a lower perception of discrimination contributed to a reduction in feelings of conflict over one’s ethnic identity. Second, the moderated mediation effect of fatherchild open communication was significant, while the effect of mother-child open communication was not. Thus, the mediation relationship (lower perceived discrimination increased bicultural competence and, thus, reduced conflict over one’s ethnic identity) grew stronger as the level of father-child open communication increased. The significance of this study lies in uncovering the causal relationships between individual and environmental factors that contribute to ethnic identity development among multicultural adolescents, particularly highlighting the important role of Korean fathers within multicultural households.
The Relationship between Bicultural Acceptance Attitude and Self-Esteem among Multicultural Adolescents: The Mediating Effects of Parental Support

Abstract:As the rate of international marriage increases, the adaptation of multicultural families and their children-multicultural adolescents-remains an issue requiring continuous monitoring, support, and improvement. This study investigates the mediating effects of parental support on the relationship between bicultural acceptance attitude and self-esteem among multicultural adolescents. Data are derived from 1197 high school sophomores, all of whom were multicultural adolescents, surveyed by the National Youth Policy Institute in 2018. Descriptive statistics, correlation, and hierarchical regression were used during data analysis. Bicultural acceptance attitude, parental support, and self-esteem all showed mutual positive correlations. Parental support had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between bicultural acceptance attitude and self-esteem. Multicultural adolescents exposed to both parent's cultures are more likely to develop positive self-esteem and a healthy personality if they receive the support of their parents. The self-esteem of multicultural adolescents can be improved by implementing measures to nurture a bicultural acceptance attitude and parental support.

Abstract:Using latent profile analyses and based on two-wave data from 5,388 Chinese adolescents (M-age = 15.79, SD = 0.66; 51.99% females), this study examined the variety of ways in which adolescents' perceived career-related parental processes (i.e., parental expectations, support, interference, barriers to engagement, and parent-child congruence) may be configured within families and how such configurations may be associated with adolescents' career adaptability and ambivalence one year later. Three meaningful profiles were identified: the "Supportive but not Intrusive" (SNI) profile, the "Unsupportive but not Permissive" (UNP) profile, and the "Ambivalent and Controlling" (AC) profile. Adolescents in the UNP profile reported higher levels of career ambivalence and lower levels of career adaptability than did those in either the SNI or the AC profiles. Implications for career development among Chinese adolescents were discussed.
A Pathway to Positive Youth Development: Unpacking the Asian American Youth Paradox and Cultural Orientations among Filipino American and Korean American Youth

Abstract:This study used longitudinal survey data of Filipino American and Korean American youth in the Chicago Metropolitan area (N = 786, MAGE = 15.00, SD = 1.91 at Wave 1 in 2014) to examine whether and how a set of organized predictors (i.e., universal predictors of youth outcomes and cultural orientations) independently and collectively explains internalizing and externalizing problems and academic performance. The results were that universal predictors such as youth antisocial beliefs, peer antisocial behaviors, and the quality of parent-child relations, were extensively predictive of youth outcomes in the expected directions. The magnitudes of universal predictors were largely unchanged when bilinear and multidimensional cultural orientation variables were accounted for together. The magnitudes of cultural orientation variables were slightly attenuated in full models but showed independent associations with youth outcomes. Specifically, English and heritage language proficiencies were protective of externalizing and internalizing problems. Behavioral practices in respective cultures increased youth problems. In addition, ethnic identity, although beneficial to mental health, can increase externalizing problems. The findings of this study provide insights into understanding the mixed outcomes among Asian Americans and important empirical evidence that can inform intervention programs to prevent youth problems, ultimately toward a pathway to positive youth development among Asian American youth.
Korean working mothers' parenting style in Korea and in the United STates: a qualitative comparative study

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to explore the similarities and differences of cultural influences on the parenting styles of Korean working mothers who live in South Korea versus Korean American working mothers living in the U.S. Four major themes were identified: (a) expression of affection for children, (b) parental control, (c) feelings for children, and (d) feelings for themselves. The findings indicate that acculturation to the American culture affected the Korean American working mothers to grant higher self-regulation to their children and to have more positive feelings for their children and themselves.
Perceived Helicopter Parenting and Korean Emerging Adults’ Psychological Adjustment: The Mediational Role of Parent–Child Affection and Pressure from Parental Career Expectations

Abstract:Examining helicopter parenting in a Confucian culture that values parental authority and involvement can extend previous helicopter parenting research that has mostly focused on a U.S. college student context. In this study, we aim to help clarify the mixed results in the literature regarding the psychological outcomes of helicopter parenting in emerging adulthood by examining the processes underlying the relationship between helicopter parenting and psychological adjustment in the Korean context. Using a diverse sample of Korean emerging adults, we investigated the relationships among perceived helicopter parenting, parent–child affection, pressure from parental career expectations, and psychological adjustment (depressive symptoms and life satisfaction). The data came from 562 Korean emerging adults (269 women and 293 men) aged 19–34 years who were either full-time students or unemployed and unmarried and had at least one living parent. The structural equation modeling used in this study revealed that higher levels of helicopter parenting were directly associated with greater depressive symptoms. Higher levels of helicopter parenting also had an indirect relationship with greater depressive symptoms through higher levels of pressure from parental career expectations. However, higher levels of helicopter parenting were indirectly linked to better psychological adjustment (fewer depressive symptoms, greater satisfaction with life) through higher levels of parent–child affection. Our results indicate that in the East Asian context, helicopter parenting could be related to both negative and positive psychological outcomes depending on the mediating factors.

Abstract:Introduction Patterns of biethnic adolescents' perceived biethnic acceptance across families, peers, and school contexts were examined during the transition from elementary to middle school in South Korea. We also examined how the transition patterns were related to their psychological outcomes during this period. Methods Utilizing 2‐wave data (2017 and 2019) from the Panel Survey of Korean Multicultural Youth Adjustment, a latent transition analysis was conducted. Participants were biethnic adolescents who were in 5th or 6th grade at Wave 1 (N = 245; 51.02% female; M age = 11.38). Their fathers were Korean, and mothers were immigrants from neighboring countries. Familial ethnic socialization, peer discrimination, and school multicultural climate scores were used as indicators of biethnic acceptance. Outcomes of self‐esteem, depression, and biethnic affirmation were also examined. Results Latent profile and transition analyses yielded two groups (i.e., high acceptance and low acceptance) at each wave and four transition patterns (i.e., high‐high, low‐high, low‐low, and high‐low). Compared to high‐high group, which was the most prevalent group, low‐low and high‐low groups reported lower self‐esteem and ethnic affirmation, and greater depression at Wave 3. Conclusions While for the majority of participants, their daily settings continued to be high in biethnic acceptance across the transition period, most at risk were those who perceived a decrease in biethnic acceptance in their daily settings. Results shed light on the need for support to maintain the context of high biethnic acceptance surrounding biethnic adolescents for their psychological well‐being in school transitions.

Abstract:In Korea, parents of children with developmental disabilities (DDs) face significant societal stigma, negatively affecting their mental well-being and quality of life. Accepting a child's disability significantly impacts family psychosocial dynamics and long-term planning. This study aimed to uncover factors affecting disability acceptance among these parents using a mixed methods sequential exploratory approach. We interviewed eight South Korean parents of children with DDs aged 5–35 and analyzed their responses to identify factors promoting or hindering acceptance. The analysis identified factors like emotion regulation, family support, religious activities, and societal perception. We the identified factors, we conducted a quantitative study of 200 parents of children aged 3–40, collaborating with the National Association of Parents of Disabled Children and an online community. The analysis indicated that positive emotion regulation promoted acceptance, while negative emotions and societal stigma hindered it. Family support was crucial, but peer or expert support showed minimal impact. The study emphasizes the importance of emotion regulation, family support, and societal awareness. Further studies should focus on refining interventions based on these findings.

Career-related parental behaviors, adolescents' consideration of future consequences, and career adaptability: A three-wave longitudinal study.

Abstract:Career adaptability is a critical psychological resource for adolescents during their transition from secondary to postsecondary education. Based on prospective data from 451 Chinese adolescents (M = 16.87, SD = 0.63; 46.3% female), this study examined the mediating role of adolescents' consideration of future consequences (CFCS) in the association between career-related parental behaviors and adolescents' career adaptability. Results demonstrated that career-related parental support at Wave 1 was associated positively with adolescents' career adaptability and its subdimensions (i.e., career concern, control, curiosity, and confidence) at Wave 3 (i.e., 10 months later). Adolescents' CFCS at Wave 2 (i.e., 5 months later after Wave 1) served as a mediator linking career-related parental support at Wave 1 and career concern, control, and curiosity, but not confidence at Wave 3. Neither parental lack of engagement nor interference at Wave 1 predicted adolescents' career adaptability at Wave 3. These results suggest that interventions assisting parents in performing supportive behaviors, such as engaging in adolescents' career exploration activities and offering information about various kinds of jobs, might be useful strategies to foster adolescents' curiosity and confidence in choosing future career paths. Additionally, counselors and parents may offer adolescents strategies to strengthen their abilities to consider the potential influences of their current behaviors on future career paths (e.g., prioritizing behaviors and activities related to their future career paths over activities that only provide immediate or short-term gratification) to promote their capabilities of coping with challenges during the career transition period. Abstract:It is important to understand the acculturation process of ethnic minority youth: To which cultures do they orient, and how do their cultural orientations develop? The present study tests a tridimensional acculturation model in Chinese American families and examines a potential mechanism through which parental cultural orientations may relate to adolescent cultural orientations. Participants were 350 Chinese American adolescents (Mage = 17.04, 58 % female) and their parents in Northern California. Results support the tridimensional acculturation model by demonstrating moderate associations among Chinese American orientation, Chinese orientation, and American orientation; our findings also point to a unique effect of parental Chinese American orientation on parental bicultural socialization beliefs. Most importantly, we identified an indirect pathway from parental to adolescents’ Chinese American orientation through adolescents’ internalization of parental bicultural socialization beliefs.

A Study on Parenting Experiences of Multicultural Families with Disabled Children in Korea

Abstract:This paper employs a qualitative case study to investigate the parenting experiences of multicultural families with disabled children in Korea. The topic at hand focuses specifically on mothers' experiences of raising a child with disability in a multicultural family. Participants chosen through purposive sampling method were recommended by the Korean multicultural support center. This study's five participants are married female immigrants who are raising elementary school-age children with disabilities and who have Korean communication skills. The qualitative case study approach seeks to elicit the participants' experiences of child nurturing. Their experiences were analyzed and categorized into two main categories: (1) hardships for mothers raising children with disabilities and (2) expectations of mothers raising children with disabilities. Such analyses lead us to understand the intricacies of motherhood for children with special needs in foreign countries. Lastly, the implications of this study aim to provide direction for effective and practical policies—including social welfare and educational support—that will meet the needs of multicultural families with disabled children.
Parent–child cultural orientations and child adjustment in Chinese American immigrant families.

Abstract:Direct and indirect/mediated relations of (a) children's and parents' cultural orientations and (b) parent-child gaps in cultural orientations to children's psychological adjustment were examined in a socioeconomically diverse sample of 258 Chinese American children (age = 6-9 years) from immigrant families. Parents reported on children's and their own Chinese and American orientations in language proficiency, media use, and social relationships. Parents and teachers rated children's externalizing and internalizing problems and social competence. Using structural equation modeling, we found evidence for both the effects of children's and parents' cultural orientations and the effects of parent-child gaps. Specifically, children's American orientations across domains were associated with their better adjustment (especially social competence). These associations were partly mediated by authoritative parenting. Parents' English and Chinese media use were both associated with higher authoritative parenting, which in turn was associated with children's better adjustment. Furthermore, greater gaps in parent-child Chinese proficiency were associated with children's poorer adjustment, and these relations were partly mediated by authoritative parenting. Together, the findings underscore the complex relations between immigrant families' dual orientations to the host and heritage cultures and children's psychological adjustment.

Abstract:Discrepancies between parent and youth perceptions of their relationship are a common aspect of generational acculturation gaps influencing immigrant families. Programs designed to strengthen parenting practices among immigrant Latino families commonly address immigration stresses, including differences between parent and youth perceptions, but little is known about discrepancies in their appraisals of program effects on parenting behavior. A randomized trial was conducted examining effects on parent behavior of a program for immigrant families with youth aged 10–14, developed through community‐based participatory research principles. Families (346 parents and youth) were recruited by organizations serving Latino families in a Midwestern metropolitan area and randomly assigned to the eight‐session psychoeducation and skill‐building program or a waitlist control. Parents and youth completed self‐report measures at pre‐intervention, post‐intervention (4 months), and a 6‐month follow‐up regarding parents' expression of acceptance, efforts to solicit information about the child's experiences, and consistency of discipline, key foci of the program. Based on social cognition theory, the study focused on possible differences in parents' and youths' perceptions of change in parenting behavior. Parents in the treatment group reported pre‐post improved acceptance, consistent discipline, and solicitation, whereas youth reported improvement only in parental solicitation, a pattern maintained at follow‐up. In the control group, the only change was youth‐reported reduction in parental acceptance. Parents' perceptions of improvement are encouraging, but overall lack of improvements from the youth perspective poses a potential problem for impact on parent–child relations. Interventions may need to target both parent and youth cognitions about behavior changes directly.

Abstract:Parents play essential roles in shaping adolescents' career development by engaging in a series of career-related parental behaviors. Based on three-wave longitudinal data collected with one-year interval between waves and using a person-centered approach, this study seeks to examine the stability and change in the configuration patterns of career-related parental behaviors, and their potential associations with adolescents' career adaptability among 1410 Chinese adolescents (M age = 15.26, SD = 0.51, 52.4 % female). Four profiles of career-related parental behaviors were consistently identified across waves: Unsupportive but not Permissive, Supportive but not Intrusive, Rejecting and Neglecting, Ambivalent and Controlling. Further, results of Latent Transition Analyses indicated that there was a coexistence of stability and changes over time in the group memberships of career-related parental behaviors configuration patterns across high school years. Last, adolescent raised by parents who consistently endorsed supportive but not intrusive practices across high school years or at least at child 12th Grade displayed higher levels of career adaptability than adolescents whose parents adopted negative parental behaviors consistently across waves. Findings of this study highlighted the importance of systematically examining the heterogeneity and dynamics inherent within the configuration profiles of careerrelated parental behaviors and their unique implications for adolescent career development over time.

Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed a convenience sample of 200 mothers of girls with precocious puberty at a university hospital located in a metropolitan area. The Parental Stress measurement, Parents as Social Context Questionnaire, and Korean version Child Behavior Checklist (K-CBCL) 6–18 were measured via self-report questionnaires. Descriptive, t-test, Pearson correlation, and bootstrapping analyses were used to analyze the data. Results Negative parenting styles had a full mediating effect on the relationship between parental stress and internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems. Conclusions Care plans for parents of girls with precocious puberty should be designed and applied in health care settings to reduce internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems by decreasing negative parenting styles.

Abstract:Parents' socialization beliefs have implications for the psychological adjustment of their children through their parenting behaviors; however, such pathways have rarely been established among Chinese American families. The present study examined how Chinese American parents' goals for their children to take on bicultural values and behaviors (i.e., bicultural socialization beliefs) influenced their child's level of depressive symptoms in emerging adulthood through their parenting behaviors and the level of parent–child alienation. Data came from Waves 2 (adolescence) and 3 (emerging adulthood) of a longitudinal study of 444 Chinese American families. Mothers' reports of their bicultural socialization beliefs positively predicted adolescents' reports of mothers' autonomy-supporting behaviors and interdependence-focused shaming behaviors. In addition, there was a significant and negative indirect effect of mothers' bicultural socialization beliefs on emerging adult depressive symptoms through adolescents' reports of mothers' autonomy-supporting behaviors and emerging adults' reports of alienation to their parents. In contrast, there was a significant and positive indirect effect from fathers' reports of their bicultural socialization beliefs to emerging adult depressive symptoms, through emerging adults' reports of alienation only. Findings contribute to our understanding of bicultural processes in Chinese American families and establish that parents' beliefs have significant implications for the psychological adjustment of Chinese American youth.
