Abstract:Recently, photocatalytic technology has been widely used as a sustainable method to address environmental pollution issues. Herein, BiOCl/Bi-MOF (BOC/Bi-MOF) based semiconductor photocatalysts with S-scheme heterojunction were fabricated by an in situ growth method, and the photocatalytic activity of the materials was explored for CO2 reduction and pollutant degradation. As confirmed by density functional theory calculations and physiochemical characterizations, the established S-scheme heterojunction confers enhanced carrier separation efficiency and retention of redox capability to the BOC/Bi-MOF. Through an improved combination of charge separation and surface reactions, the prepared BOC/Bi-MOF efficiently reduces CO2 solely to CO. The heterojunction as catalyst is more durable and effective than any of its single component. The CO evolution rate of the optimized composite catalyst was 7.66 and 33.10 times of those of BiOCl and Bi-MOF, respectively. In addition, BOC/Bi-MOF exhibits a high efficiency in the photocatalytic degradation of the pollutant rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous environments, and the pollutant was completely removed within 20 min. Due to the generation of interfacial potential differences, the internal electric field (IEF) generation at heterogeneous interfaces facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenic charges. This work demonstrated a practical and effective route for in situ growth of S-scheme heterojunctions with high efficiencies in CO2 reduction and RhB degradation.

Abstract:The rational design of an S-scheme heterojunctions in hybrid semiconductors to realize separated charge carriers and sufficient redox ability is considered as an attractive way to achieve high photocatalytic activity in diluted CO2 reduction (DCR). An S-scheme heterojunction formed in the fibrous Ta2O5/Ag2S nanostructures is proposed for improving the photocatalytic performance in DCR under simulated solar irradiation. Benchmark CH4 production rates of 132.3 mu mol g(-1) are obtained with 93.1% selectivity over optimal catalyst ASTO-2. The remarkable activity in photocatalytic DCR of Ta2O5/Ag2S is attributed to the unique 0D/1D structure and effective charge separation by the photoinduced strong internal electric field and S-scheme mechanism. The measurements of in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance further confirm the photoinduced carrier transfer pathways following the S-scheme mechanism. This research can provide a new strategy for designing the S-scheme heterojunctions to improve the photocatalytic performance of diluted CO2 conversion.

Abstract:Regulating charge transfer to achieve specific transfer path can improve electron utilization and complete efficient photoreduction of CO2. Here, we fabricated a S-scheme heterojunction of CN/Fe-MOF by an in-situ assembly strategy. The S-scheme charge transfer mechanism was confirmed by band structure, electron spin resonance (ESR) and work function (Φ) analysis. On the one hand, the response of Fe-MOF in the visible region improved the utilization of light energy, thus increasing the ability of CN/Fe-MOF to generate charge carriers. On the other hand, CN, as the active site, not only had strong adsorption capacity for CO2, but also retained photogenerated electrons with high reduction capacity because of S-scheme charge transfer mechanism. Hence, in the absence of any sacrificial agent and cocatalyst, the optimized 50CN/Fe-MOF obtained the highest CO yield (19.17 μmol g−1) under UV-Vis irradiation, which was almost 10 times higher than that of CN. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectra not only revealed that the photoreduction of CO2 occurred at the CN, but also demonstrated that the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism enabled 50CN/Fe-MOF to have a stronger ability to generate HCOO− than CN.

Abstract:Inspired by the carbon cycle in nature, it is promising to convert CO2 into energy-dense hydrocarbon fuels via photocatalytic CO2 reduction. In the present paper, hierarchical ZnMn2O4/ZnO nanofibers were prepared as photocatalysts by electrospinning and calcination. They outperformed pristine ZnO nanofibers with about 4-fold increment in CO and CH4 yields. Except for the advantages coming from the design, such as more exposed active sites and multiple light reflections, other benefits derived from interface charge transfer are also important. To uncover this, density functional theory calculation (DFT), along with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was performed. Photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL spectroscopy revealed that the charge separation efficiency in the composite was significantly elevated. Step-scheme (S-scheme) charge transfer was testified in the composite. This result, for the first time, exemplifies that S-scheme charge-transfer can also be realized in heterojunction based-on p-type ZnMn2O4 and n-type ZnO. It provides a new insight into the design of other S-scheme photocatalysts, which are composed of p-type and n-type semiconductors.

Abstract:S-scheme photocatalysts are more efficient than the conventional type-II configuration, but the CO2 reduction performances are still unsatisfactory. Herein, we firstly report the layered double hydroxide (LDH) based S-scheme heterostructure photocatalyst (NiIn LDH/In2S3) with n-type NiIn LDH and p-type In2S3. The built-in internal electric field directs the photogenerated electrons flow from the conductive band of In2S3 to the valance band of NiIn LDH, which is confirmed by operando and theoretical experiments. The CO2 photoreduction intermediates are monitored by in-situ Raman spectra, and the density functional calculations disclose the reduced energy barrier for CO desorption on the heterojunction. Therefore, without cocatalysts or sacrificial agents, the NiIn LDH/In2S3 heterojunction delivers a high CO yield rate of 29.43 μmol g−1 h−1 under visible light irradiation, ca. 3.5 and 4.3 times higher than the single counterpart NiIn LDH and In2S3. Notably, this value is the highest among S-scheme CO2 photocatalysts and surpasses most top-ranking benchmarks.

Abstract:The emissions of CO 2 are increasing year by year, which have led to serious environmental problems. Converting CO 2 into valuable fuels through photocatalysis is a promising strategy. In this research, oxygen atoms were successfully innovated into graphitic carbon nitride (CN). Additionally, cobalt porphyrin (CoTPP) was successfully loaded onto the modified carbon nitride (Co/CN). The generation of interfacial electric fields and bending bands between CN and CoTPP was demonstrated experimentally. The electrons in the CN and the holes in the CoTPP were combined to form a unique S-scheme heterojunction structure, and efficient separation of carriers was promoted. As a result, the CO conversion under visible light irradiation reached an impressive 100.70 μmol g −1 h −1 . By integrating theoretical and experimental findings, this study underscores the critical role of catalyst design in enabling efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.

Abstract:Converting CO2 into renewable fuels by solar energy has been considered an ideal strategy to mitigate the climate crisis and address the fossil fuel depletion problem. However, severe charge carrier recombination and sluggish interfacial reaction dynamics make it a challenge to achieve high conversion efficiency. Herein, a unique 2D/2D step-scheme (S-scheme) photocatalyst of Bi2WO6/C3N4 (BWO/CN) is constructed by a facile electrostatic self-assembly strategy. The ultrathin 2D/2D heterostructure endowed the BWO/CN hybrid with abundant contact interfaces, short charge-transport distance, and relatively more accessible reaction sites. Besides, the differences of work function between CN and BWO induced the formation of a built-in electric field, resulting in much enhanced interfacial charge transfer/separation rates. As a result, the optimized BWO/CN heterojunction exhibits significantly improved photocatalytic performance toward CO2 reduction, which is approximately 2.8-fold higher than that of its CN counterpart. The accelerated S-scheme charge-transfer mechanism is systematically corroborated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photo-irradiated Kelvin probe force microscopy, and electron spin resonance. This research may provide a facile protocol for the rational design of an S-scheme face-to-face 2D/2D heterojunction for efficient CO2 conversion.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 conversion efficiency is still much lower than what is expected owing to the sluggish charge separation and transfer for many semiconductors. Herein, we fabricated a highly efficient S-scheme heterojunction by integrating the CuInS2 (CIS) with the oxygen-doping brown polymer carbon nitride (PCN). The construction of CIS/PCN S-scheme heterojunction promotes spatial separation of photogenerated charge while maintaining their strong reduction capability. The formed intimate contact interface between the CIS and PCN provides the strong driving force for the transfer of photogenerated charge, which accelerates the electrons rapidly migrating from PCN to CIS through the tight interface, resulting in more reductive electrons participating in photocatalytic reaction. As a result, the CIS/PCN S-scheme heterostructure shows a remarkably enhanced photocatalytic activity with a CO yield rate of up to 105.89 μmol g-1h−1, which is 7 times higher than that of the CIS. Combined density functional theory (DFT) calculations with experimental results demonstrate the formation of an intimate contact interface is not only more conducive to CO2 adsorption and activation but also lowers the reaction energy barrier of the conversion of CO2 to CO. Meanwhile, ESR characterization reveals the electron transfer pathway of CIS/PCN for photocatalytic CO2 conversion. This work may provide an illuminating insight into designing the S-scheme photocatalyst for enhanced CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:The use of solar energy to convert CO2 into high-value-added solar fuels via photocatalytic reaction represents a promising technology to address climate change issues. Herein, a unique 2D/2D S-scheme ZIS@APCN heterojunction is developed by in-situ growth of ZnIn2S4 nanosheets (ZIS) onto porous two-dimensional amorphous polymeric carbon nitride (APCN) with finely-tunned band structure for photocatalytic reduction of CO2. Benefited from ultra-thin two-dimensional and rigorous pore structures, notably enhanced CO2 adsorption and increased active surface area are ensured. Moreover, the formed S-scheme heterojunction effectively promotes the separation of electron-hole pairs. The optimized S-scheme ZIS@APCN yields a CO production rate as high as 1425 μmol·g-1·h-1, surpassing pure APCN by ~7.34 times and ZIS by ~3.98 times while maintaining a high CO selectivity of 81.6%. This work introduces a new approach to develop a S-scheme heterojunction for efficient photoreduction of CO2 by modulating the band structure.

Abstract:Over the past decades, there has been considerable research attention dedicated to the conversion of CO 2 into valuable chemical fuels such as CH 4 , CO, and CH 3 OH through CO 2 photoreduction. Despite these efforts, the efficiency of current CO 2 photoreduction systems remains unsatisfactory, primarily due to the rapid recombination of photoinduced charges and inadequate co-adsorption of CO 2 and H 2 O molecules. Herein, we present a novel and highly efficient CO 2 photoreduction system based on an intimate 2D/2D g-C 3 N 4 @BiOI step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction constructed on hydrophobic carbon fiber paper. The resulting heterojunction demonstrates outstanding photocatalytic ability for CO 2 reduction, achieving high CO selectivity (77.8%) and activity (458.0 μmol h −1 m −2 for CO). The remarkable photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the well-designed S-scheme heterojunction, which enhances charge separation efficiency, and the establishment of a gasliquid-solid triphase interface, ensuring the simultaneous and sufficient supply of CO 2 and H 2 O. This work introduces new perspectives for the design of highly efficient photocatalytic CO 2 reduction systems.

Abstract:Photocatalytic technology, which is regarded as a green route to transform solar energy into chemical fuels, plays an important role in the fields of energy and environmental protection. An emerging S-scheme heterojunction with the tightly coupled interface, whose photocatalytic efficiency exceeds those of conventional type II and Z-scheme photocatalysts, has received much attention due to its rapid charge carrier separation and strong redox capacity. This review provides a systematic description of S-scheme heterojunction in the photocatalysis, including its development, reaction mechanisms, preparation, and characterization methods. In addition, S-scheme photocatalysts for CO2 reduction are described in detail by categorizing them as 0D/1D, 0D/2D, 0D/3D, 2D/2D, and 2D/3D. Finally, some defects of S-scheme heterojunctions are pointed out, and the future development of S-scheme heterojunctions is proposed.

Abstract:The conversion of CO2 into clean fuels by utilizing solar energy is still limited by a low photoconversion efficiency, and heterojunction photocatalysts are considered a very effective way to solve this problem. Herein, a heterojunction system consisting of hematite (α-Fe2O3) and boron carbonitride (BCN) was fabricated through a one-pot ionothermal method. α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles were grown in situ on the surface of BCN nanosheets, forming an α-Fe2O3/BCN heterojunction (FBCN) with tiny amounts of α-Fe2O3 (less than 2 wt%). The as-synthesized FBCN catalyst with 1.46 wt% α-Fe2O3 provides the highest CO2 photoreduction activity (55.1 µmol g-1 for CO) without any cocatalyst or sacrificial reagents, which is 3.9 times higher than that obtained for pure BCN. The enhanced CO2 reduction activity can be attributed to the high surface area and effective interface-contacted heterostructure, which endows the catalyst with broadband visible light absorption, suppressed separation of photogenerated electron holes, and promoted charge transfer. Meanwhile, cycling experiments demonstrate that the FBCN photocatalyst shows good reusability and stability. This work can assist in the design and preparation of BCN-based heterojunctions with effective CO2 reduction performance.

Abstract:Due to the high charge separation efficiency leading to high photocatalytic activity, there has been significant interest in enhancing the charge separation ability of photocatalysts by controlling the heterojunction structure. To investigate the effect of the heterojunction structure on the photocatalytic performance of composite catalysts and understand its corresponding mechanism, a Z-scheme ZnFe2O4/ZnO/CdS heterojunction was constructed using the ultrasound method and used for CO2 photoreduction. The Z-scheme heterojunction catalyst demonstrates elevated photocatalytic and charge separation efficiencies. Specifically, the conversion rate for the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to CH4 reaches 105.9 μmol g-1 h-1, surpassing that of the majority of previously reported semiconductor photocatalysts like ZnFe2O4/CdS. This research offers a fresh perspective on the development of innovative heterojunction photocatalysts and broadens the utilization of ternary composite materials in CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:Employing photocatalytic technology to promote CO2 photoreduction into carbon fuels is of great significance to the field of renewable energy. Herein, the hierarchical Bi2MoO6@In2S3 heterostructured nanotubes rich in surface oxygen vacancies (SOVs) are synthesized by a multi-step control strategy for visible-light-driven CO2 reduction. The combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ISI-XPS) confirms the existence of the S-scheme charge transfer mechanism and SOVs, which will accelerate the separation of charges and ameliorate the redox capability. Additionally, the unique hierarchical hollow architectures also effectively promote the efficiency of light utilization and provide abundant reactive sites. Consequently, the optimized Bi2MoO6-SOVs@In2S3 heterogeneous nanotubes display remarkable activity under visible light irradiation, with the yield rate and selectivity for CO-generation are 28.54 μmol g-1h−1 and 94.1%, respectively. This work provides new opportunities for the design of hierarchical hollow heterojunctions with an S-scheme charge transfer mechanism for effective photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:: Artificial photosynthesis by CO2 photoreduction is an ideal channel for mitigating the greenhouse effect and energy crises. Nevertheless, its efficiency is still low due to severe charge recombination and sluggish kinetics. Herein, S-scheme BiOBr/NiO heterojunction, composed of two kinds of p-type semiconductors, exhibits enhanced CO2 photoreduction activity. Enhanced light absorption and specific surface area are attributable to NiO nanosheets with hierarchical porous structures. Results from in-situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and work function calculation manifest that the photoexcited electrons transfer from BiOBr to NiO via the S-scheme mechanism. And charge separation and strong redox ability are simultaneously realized. In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra unveil complex intermediates in CO2 photoreduction. This work presents a novel understand for the CO2 photoreduction mechanism of S-scheme heterojunction built by p-type semiconductors by integrating in-situ monitoring techniques with density functional theory calculation.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to hydrocarbon fuel is a potential strategy to solve energy shortage and mitigate the greenhouse effect. Here, direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts (In2O3/Bi2S3) without an electron mediator are prepared by a simple hydrolysis method. The In2O3/Bi2S3 composite photocatalysts show greatly boosted photoactivity on CO2 conversion to CO compared with the pristine In2O3 and Bi2S3. The highest CO evolution rate of 2.67 μmol·g-1·h-1 is achieved by In2O3/Bi2S3-3, without any sacrificial agent or cocatalyst, which is about 3.87 times that of In2O3 (0.69 μmol·g-1·h-1). The boosted photocatalytic performance of In2O3/Bi2S3 composite catalysts can be ascribed to the establishment of a Z-scheme heterojunction, improving the photoabsorption and facilitating charge separation and transfer. This study provides a reference for designing and fabricating high-efficiency Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Developing efficient photocatalyst to promote the conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals remains challenging. Here, novel NH2-MIL-101(Fe)@Bi2MoO6 S-scheme heterojunctions were fabricated via a solvothermal method, in which Bi2MoO6 (BMO) nanoparticles uniformly growing on the NH2-MIL-101(Fe) (NM101) octahedrons with intimate contact interface. The resultant heterojunctions revealed significantly enhanced activity for CO2 photoreduction. The optimal performance was achieved when the content of BMO was 10 wt%, and the formation rate of CO reached 67.0 μmol·g−1·h−1 under visible light illumination (with apparent quantum efficiency of 0.09 % at 450 nm), which was 3.2-fold of individual NM101. The boosting activity benefited from the formation of S-scheme heterojunction at the NM101 @BMO interfaces, which facilitated the separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs with strong redox ability at the interface. This S-scheme charge transfer mechanism was further validated by the in-situ XPS and fluorescence probe molecular experiment. Besides, the intermediates and preliminary mechanism of photoreaction were unraveled based on in-situ DRIFTS analysis. This work provides some novel insights for designing efficient S-scheme photocatalysts for CO2 photoreduction.

Abstract:Herein, a MOF-on-MOF-derived In2O3 nanosheets encapsulating CuO ortho-octahedral core–shell structure CuO@In2O3 S-Scheme heterojunction composite was designed and prepared by a new strategy of interfacial engineering integrating optical and catalytic activity centers, which endowed with the catalyst's dual properties of both highly efficient light absorption and charge separation. The In2O3 shell wraps around the CuO core in a tight coaxial contact, allowing them have the largest contact surface thus effectively promoting the transport of electrons and holes separated at the interface. More importantly, CuO@In2O3 formed a binuclear center could enhance the CO2 adsorption to facilitate the subsequent catalytic reaction and promote the charge transfer through Cu-O-In bonds. The successful construction of S-scheme heterojunction not only promotes the spatial separation of electron-hole pairs, but also maintains the strongest redox potentials of CuO and In2O3 at the conduction and valence band positions. Notably, the intermediates in the CO2 photoreduction process were probed by in situ infrared spectroscopy and a possible photocatalytic mechanism was hypothesized. Under visible light irradiation, the CuO@In2O3 rates of photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to produce CH4 and CO were 190.32 μmol g−1h−1 and 500.46 μmol g−1h−1, which are 2.1, 10.3 times and 2.4, 7.9 times higher than pristine CuO and In2O3, respectively. This work provides a feasible strategy for the design and synthesis of binuclear-centered photocatalysts with interfacial engineered modulation and application to the photocatalytic reduction of CO2.

Unique S-scheme heterojunctions in self-assembled TiO2/CsPbBr3 hybrids for CO2 photoreduction

Abstract:Abstract Exploring photocatalysts to promote CO 2 photoreduction into solar fuels is of great significance. We develop TiO 2 /perovskite (CsPbBr 3 ) S-scheme heterojunctions synthesized by a facile electrostatic-driven self-assembling approach. Density functional theory calculation combined with experimental studies proves the electron transfer from CsPbBr 3 quantum dots (QDs) to TiO 2 , resulting in the construction of internal electric field (IEF) directing from CsPbBr 3 to TiO 2 upon hybridization. The IEF drives the photoexcited electrons in TiO 2 to CsPbBr 3 upon light irradiation as revealed by in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, suggesting the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction in the TiO 2 /CsPbBr 3 nanohybrids which greatly promotes the separation of electron-hole pairs to foster efficient CO 2 photoreduction. The hybrid nanofibers unveil a higher CO 2 -reduction rate (9.02 μmol g –1 h –1 ) comparing with pristine TiO 2 nanofibers (4.68 μmol g –1 h –1 ). Isotope ( 13 CO 2 ) tracer results confirm that the reduction products originate from CO 2 source.

Enhancing photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity of ZnIn2S4/MOF-808 microsphere with S-scheme heterojunction by in situ synthesis method

Abstract:The design of a heterogeneous structure for photocatalysts has attracted significant attention. In this study, a step-scheme (S-scheme) heterojunction was designed using an in-situ synthesis method. The resulting heterojunction comprised 3D microspheres of ZnIn2S4 and octahedral MOF-808 (ZnIn2S4/MOF-808). During this process, we investigated the impact of the scale of the ZnIn2S4 microspheres on performance by controlling the growth of the ZnIn2S4 microspheres with various scales. The maximum catalytic activity was discovered to be achieved with ZnIn2S4 microspheres of 6 µm when coupled with MOF-808. Compared to pure ZnIn2S4 and MOF-808, the fabricated S-scheme ZnIn2S4/MOF-808 heterojunction exhibited notably improved photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. The performance of the CO yield of the optimized sample could reach 8.21 μmol g−1 h−1, which was approximately 10 and 8 times higher than those of ZnIn2S4 (0.84 μmol g−1 h−1) and MOF-808 (1.03 μmol g−1 h−1), respectively. Moreover, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, ESR, in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations were used to study the charge transfer mechanism of the S-scheme heterojunction. In-situ FT-IR investigation established the Carbene pathway as the source of CO production (CO2 → CO2* → COOH* → CO* → CO). This study provides an efficient method for designing an S-scheme heterojunction for photocatalytic CO2 reduction.
