Abstract:Earthquake-induced-landslides will change the underlying surface conditions (topography, vegetation cover rate, etc.), which consequently may influence the hydrologic response and then change the flash flood risk. The Jianpinggou catchment, located in the Wenchuan earthquake (occurred in Sichuan, China, 2008) affected area, is selected as the study area. The distribution of the landslides is obtained from the remote sensing image data. The changes of topography are obtained from the comparisons among digital elevation models (DEMs) during different periods. A physical-based model, the integrated hydrology model (InHM), is used to simulate the hydrologic response before and after the landslide. The influence of the underlying surface conditions is then discussed based on the simulation results. The results reveal that landslides cause significant effects on the hydrologic response, and the impact is proportional to the proportion of surface flow in the total runoff. The effect of landslides on the runoff is insignificant at the outlet, but obvious in the local area. The larger the rainfall, the more visible the impact, and the impact of landslides will increase rapidly at the threshold of the runoff (the total rainfall of 235 mm in 6 h in the study area), but there is a limit with the further enlarged rainfall. The improved understanding of the impact of landslides on the hydrologic response provides valuable theoretical support for storm flood forecasting.
Mechanism of the December 2015 Catastrophic Landslide at the Shenzhen Landfill and Controlling Geotechnical Risks of Urbanization

Abstract:This paper presents findings from an investigation of the large-scale construction solid waste (CSW) landslide that occurred at a landfill at Shenzhen, Guangdong, China, on December 20, 2015, and which killed 77 people and destroyed 33 houses. The landslide involved 2.73×106 m3 of CSW and affected an area about 1100 m in length and 630 m in maximum width, making it the largest landfill landslide in the world. The investigation of this disaster used a combination of unmanned aerial vehicle surveillance and multistage remote-sensing images to reveal the increasing volume of waste in the landfill and the shifting shape of the landfill slope for nearly two years before the landslide took place, beginning with the creation of the CSW landfill in March, 2014, that resulted in the uncertain conditions of the landfill's boundaries and the unstable state of the hydrologic performance. As a result, applying conventional stability analysis methods used for natural landslides to this case would be difficult. In order to analyze this disaster, we took a multistage modeling technique to analyze the varied characteristics of the landfill slope's structure at various stages of CSW dumping and used the non-steady flow theory to explain the groundwater seepage problem. The investigation showed that the landfill could be divided into two units based on the moisture in the land: a front uint, consisted of the landfill slope, which had low water content; and a rear unit, consisted of fresh waste, which had a high water content. This structure caused two effects—surface-water infiltration and consolidation seepage that triggered the landslide in the landfill. Surface-water infiltration induced a gradual increase in pore water pressure head, or piezometric head, in the front slope because the infiltrating position rose as the volume of waste placement increased. Consolidation seepage led to higher excess pore water pressures as the loading of waste increased. We also investigated the post-failure soil dynamics parameters of the landslide deposit using cone penetration, triaxial, and ring-shear tests in order to simulate the characteristics of a flowing slide with a long run-out due to the liquefaction effect. Finally, we conclude the paper with lessons from the tens of catastrophic landslides of municipal solid waste around the world and discuss how to better manage the geotechnical risks of urbanization.

Abstract:Large earthquakes initiate chains of surface processes that last much longer than the brief moments of strong shaking. Most moderate‐ and large‐magnitude earthquakes trigger landslides, ranging from small failures in the soil cover to massive, devastating rock avalanches. Some landslides dam rivers and impound lakes, which can collapse days to centuries later, and flood mountain valleys for hundreds of kilometers downstream. Landslide deposits on slopes can remobilize during heavy rainfall and evolve into debris flows. Cracks and fractures can form and widen on mountain crests and flanks, promoting increased frequency of landslides that lasts for decades. More gradual impacts involve the flushing of excess debris downstream by rivers, which can generate bank erosion and floodplain accretion as well as channel avulsions that affect flooding frequency, settlements, ecosystems, and infrastructure. Ultimately, earthquake sequences and their geomorphic consequences alter mountain landscapes over both human and geologic time scales. Two recent events have attracted intense research into earthquake‐induced landslides and their consequences: the magnitude M 7.6 Chi‐Chi, Taiwan earthquake of 1999, and the M 7.9 Wenchuan, China earthquake of 2008. Using data and insights from these and several other earthquakes, we analyze how such events initiate processes that change mountain landscapes, highlight research gaps, and suggest pathways toward a more complete understanding of the seismic effects on the Earth's surface.

Investigation of 20 August 2019 Catastrophic Debris Flows Triggered by Extreme Rainstorms Near Epicentre of Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:A strong earthquake could trigger a large number of co-seismic landslides and induce large amount of loose materials on steep slopes and in the gullies. Under strong rainfall conditions, these loose materials could induce devastating debris flows, which will endanger the resettled population and destroy the re-built infrastructures. From 19 to 20 August 2019, fourteen debris flows were triggered by extreme rainstorms near the epicentre of the Wenchuan Earthquake. Among the fourteen incidents, three of them produced debris flow dams, which changed the course of the Minjiang River and resulted in flooding at different parts of the reconstructed Miansi town. In addition, sixteen casualties, twenty two missing persons, and destruction of four main roads were reported. In this paper, one typical catchment, named as “Dengxi gully”, near the epicentre of the Wenchuan earthquake (Sichuan Province, China) was chosen as a case study for remote sensing analysis, field investigation of landslide evolution and debris flow development before and after the catastrophic events. The debris flow in the study area was initiated in four stages: (a) generation of a large amount of loose materials from the Wenchuan Earthquake; (b) run-off erosion from co-seismic landslide material on hilly slopes and repeated mobilizations in steep channels over the years; (c) development of high intensity localised rainfall events; (d) wash out of accumulated materials in gully by the flood. The study of “8.20 debris flows” can provide a benchmark for analysis of long-term evolution of debris flows in order to identify potential continuing hazards in the earthquake-affected areas and make proper engineering decisions.
Spatial Distribution of Large-Scale Landslides Induced by the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:The 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008 induced hundreds of large-scale landslides. This paper systematically analyzes 112 large-scale landslides (surface area > 50000 m2), which were identified by interpretation of remote sensing imagery and field investigations. The analysis suggests that the distribution of large-scale landslides is affected by the following four factors: (a) distance effect: 80% of studied large-scale landslides are located within a distance of 5 km from the seismic faults. The farther the distance to the faults, the lower the number of large-scale landslides; (b) locked segment effect: the large-scale landslides are mainly located in five concentration zones closely related with the crossing, staggering and transfer sections between one seismic fault section and the next one, as well as the end of the NE fault section. The zone with the highest concentration was the Hongbai-Chaping segment, where a great number of large-scale landslides including the two largest landslides were located. The second highest concentration of large-scale landslides was observed in the Nanba-Donghekou segment at the end of NE fault, where the Donghekou landslide and the Woqian landslide occurred; (c) Hanging wall effect: about 70% of the large-scale landslides occurred on the hanging wall of the seismic faults; and (d) direction effect: in valleys perpendicular to the seismic faults, the density of large-scale landslides on the slopes facing the seismic wave is obviously higher than that on the slopes dipping in the same direction as the direction of propagation of the seismic wave. Meanwhile, it is found that the sliding and moving directions of large-scale landslides are related to the staggering direction of the faults in each section. In Qingchuan County where the main fault activity was horizontal twisting and staggering, a considerable number of landslides showed the feature of sliding and moving in NE direction which coincides with the staggering direction of the seismic faults.
Travel Distances of Earthquake-induced Landslides

Abstract:Over 30,000 landslides occurred during the Wenchuan earthquake on 12 May 2008 in China. The casualty caused by these earthquake-induced landslides was approximately one quarter of the total casualty of this earthquake. The travel distance is a key parameter that measures the vulnerability to landslides. An appropriate model is required to evaluate the possible travel distances of earthquake-induced landslides so that planners can better select safe sites in earthquake-prone areas in the future. This paper describes a study on the travel distances of earthquake-induced landslides. We focus on 160 landslide cases in which relevant geometric data is available. Considering the substantial variations of the lithology and topographic conditions, multi-variable regression models are established for rock slides and soil slides separately. A comparison between the travel distances of rain-induced landslides and the landslides triggered by the Wenchuan earthquake is also conducted.

Abstract:The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake triggered the largest number of landslides among the recent strong earthquake events around the world. The loose landslide materials were retained on steep terrains and deep gullies. In the period from 2008 to 2015, numerous debris flows occurred during rainstorms along the Provincial Road 303 (PR303) near the epicentre of the earthquake, causing serious damage to the reconstructed highway. Approximately 5.24×106m3 of debris-flow sediment was deposited shortly after the earthquake. This paper evaluates the evolution of the debris flows that occurred after the Wenchuan earthquake, which helps understand long-term landscape evolution and cascading effects in regions impacted by mega earthquakes. With the aid of a GIS platform combined with field investigations, we continuously tracked movements of the loose deposit materials in all the debris flow gullies along an 18km reach of PR303 and the characteristics of the regional debris flows during several storms in the past seven years. This paper presents five important aspects of the evolution of debris flows: (1) supply of debris flow materials; (2) triggering rainfall; (3) initiation mechanisms and types of debris flows; (4) runout characteristics; and (5) elevated riverbed due to the deposited materials from the debris flows. The hillslope soil deposits gradually evolved into channel deposits and the solid materials in the channels moved towards the ravine mouth. Accordingly, channelized debris flows became dominant gradually. Due to the decreasing source material volume and changes in debris flow characteristics, the triggering rainfall tends to increase from 30mmh−1 in 2008 to 64mmh−1 in 2013, and the runout distance tends to decrease over time. The runout materials blocked the river and elevated the riverbed by at least 30m in parts of the study area. The changes in the post-seismic debris flow activity can be categorized into three stages, i.e., active, unstable, and recession.

Abstract:The Wenchuan Earthquake is a great earthquake measured at 8.0 Ms occurred in Chengdu the capital of Sichuan with a depth of 19km in 2008 caused extensive damage to life and property and induced several rockfalls, avalanches, and landslides due to riverbed incision in the area. The investigations conducted through satellite images reported the total of 11,700 avalanches and landslides on the steep bank slopes of numerous streams in the quake hit area of 2260 km2. The increased erosion rate due to rockslide and landslide further steepen the slopes by 40 degrees at the Minjiang River, along with the heavy production of granular materials as a result of weathering and shaking. The seismic ground motion also affected the local stress field right beneath topographic surface, producing coarse debris along huge diameters and as a result the cajoled avalanches and landslides clustered around high points and deposit debris than on channel floors of the rivers.

Abstract:Strong earthquakes in mountainous regions can trigger massive landslides, and not just during the period of shaking. This study uses a time series of remote images to better understand the distribution of landslides near the epicenter of the 2008 Wenchuan Ms8.0 earthquake. We use multi-year high-resolution satellite images to interpret landslides and establish landslide inventories spanning from 2008 to 2019. Based on differencing pre-earthquake and post-earthquake digital elevation models (DEMs), we calculate the factor of safety (Fs, i.e., resisting forces versus driving forces) of slopes using a simplified Newmark model. Results show that landslide occurrence highly relies on slope stability, demonstrated by both co-seismic and post-seismic landslide mapping. According to the Fs analysis, which is closely related to the gradual slope change after the earthquake, most slopes within the study area stabilized after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, consistent with the decreasing trend of the landslide activity level. However, due to lithologic variation, the changes of post-earthquake slope stability may differ with landscape features in various regions and result in different geologic hazards. Thus, we highlight the necessity of continuous post-seismic monitoring and analysis of slope stability in different affected regions. The results of this work provide useful information for post-seismic infrastructure reconstruction and future earthquake disaster prevention in mountainous areas.

The Jianpinggou catchment, located in Sichuan China, is selected as the study area for this paper. The distribution of the landslides is obtained from the remote sensing image data. A physical-based model, the Integrated Hydrology Model (InHM), is used to simulate the hydrologic response before and after the landslide, respectively. The influence of the underlying surface conditions is then discussed based on the output data, such as the hydrograph, distributed water depth and local runoff. The study leads to the following generalized conclusions: 1) the impact of the landslides on hydrologic response does exist, and the greater the proportion of surface flow in the total runoff is, the greater the impact will be; 2) the peak flow from the outlet increased after the landslide, but the shape of the hydrograph has little change; 3) the effect of the landslides on the local runoff is relatively obvious, and this elevates the local flash floods risk; 4) the difference of hydrologic responses between the two periods (before and after the landslide occurring) becomes larger with the increasing rainfall, with a threshold of rapid growth at the rainfall frequencies of once in every 50 years, but there is a limit. The improved understanding of the impact of landslides on the hydrologic response in Jianpinggou catchment provides valuable theoretical support for the storm flood forecast.
Incidence Number and Affected Area of Wenchuan Earthquake- induced Landslides

Abstract:On May 12, 2008 at 14:28 (local time), a catastrophic earthquake with the surface wave magnitude of Ms 8.0 struck the Sichuan Province of China. With the help of aerial photographs, multi-source remote sensing imageries and field investigations, slope failures and catastrophic landslides induced by the ground motion were extensively mapped. The results show that the Wenchuan earthquake has triggered 48 007 landslides, covering a total plane area of about 711.8 km2 over a broad area of about 48 678 km2. The total number and plane area of the landslides were much beyond other estimates in the published papers. There are several typical types in Wenchuan earthquake-induced landslides, such as soil landslide, rock fall, rock avalanche and debris flow,which are always distributed along the earthquake-triggering faults and with many barrier lakes being formed. It is estimated that the total number of landslides may well be over 50 000, to cover a total plane area of about 750 km2 as triggered by Wenchuan earthquake because of non-accessibility of remote sensing imagery and field investigation in some regions and the limit of the study area. In this paper, statistics for the number and plane area of Wenchuan earthquake-induced landslides were collected objectively and comprehensively, so the results may serve as a good reference for further study of spatial distribution, mechanism, evaluation, and prediction of seismic landslide, or even for identification of seismic characteristics.
GIS BASED CERTAINTY FACTOR ANALYSIS OF LANDSLIDE TRIGGERING FACTORS IN WENCHUAN EARTHQUAKE

Abstract:On May 12, 2008 at 14:28(local time), a catastrophic earthquake with surface wave magnitude of 8.0 struck the Sichuan Province of China. Tens of thousands of landslides were triggered by this earthquake over a broad area. 48007 landslides were interpreted from aerial photographs and multi-source remote sensing imageries, and they are verified by field investigation. Based on the interpretation results, landslide triggering factors with certainty analysis is carried out by means of GIS spatial analysis. The 12 impact factors contributing to the Wenchuan earthquake-induced landslide occurrences include stratigraphic, lithology, main faults, seismic intensity, macroscopic epicenter, surface rupture points, slope gradient, aspect, profile curvature, elevation, drainages, and roads. The certainty factor analysis result shows that five categories of high landslide susceptibility value are as follows: (1) stratigraphic of Cambrian, Ordovician, Permian and Carboniferous, lithology of intrusive rock group and limestone rock group; (2) Wenchuan earthquake-induced landslides are most affected by the main central fault, and also controlled by the Qianshan fault, the little impact for Houshan fault; (3) there are correlations between landslide susceptibility and seismic intensity, distance from the epicenter and surface rupture zone; (4) slope gradient of more than 40°, aspects of east and southeast directions, elevations between 1000m and 2000m, especial between 1000m and 1500m were susceptible for landslide occurrence; and (5) distance to drainages is less than 400m and less than 2000m away from roads. The results show that the numerical intervals of each factor are inclined to landslides. This work is the basement for further study of earthquake- induced landslides hazard evaluation and prediction.
Risk Assessment of Population Loss Posed by Earthquake-Landslide-Debris Flow Disaster Chain: A Case Study in Wenchuan, China

Abstract:Earthquakes often cause secondary disasters in mountainous areas, forming the typical earthquake-landslide-debris flow disaster chain for a long time that results in a series of losses. It is important to improve the risk assessment method from the perspective of cascading effect of such a disaster chain, by strengthening quantitative research on hazards of the debris flows which are affected by landslide volume and rainstorm intensity. Taking Wenchuan County as an example, the risk assessment method for population loss of the disaster chain is established and the risks are evaluated in this paper. The results show that the population loss risk is 2.59–2.71 people/km2 under the scenarios of the Wenchuan Ms8.0 earthquake and four rainstorm intensities. The impacts of landslide and debris flow after the earthquake were long-term and profound. A comparison of risks caused by each element of the chain revealed that the risk associated with the earthquake accounted for the highest proportion, and landslide and debris flow accounted for 38.82–37.18% and 3.42–7.50%, respectively. As the earthquake intensity increases, the total risk posed by the disaster chain increases significantly. The risk caused by the earthquake is the highest in high earthquake intensity zones; while in the lower-intensity zones, landslides and debris flows pose relatively high risks. The risk assessment results were verified through comparison with actual data, indicating that the simulation results are quite consistent with the existing disaster information and that the risk assessment method based on the earthquake-landslide-debris flow cascade process is significant for future risk estimation.

Abstract:It is increasingly clear that landslides represent a major cause of economic costs and deaths in earthquakes in mountains. In the Wenchuan earthquake case, post-seismic cascading landslides continue to represent a major problem eight years on. Failure to anticipate the impact of cascading landslides could lead to unexpected losses of human lives and properties. Previous studies tended to focus on separate landslide processes, with little attention paid to the quantification of long-term evolution of multiple processes or the evolution of mass movements. The very active mass movements near the epicentre of the Wenchuan earthquake provided us a unique opportunity to understand the complex processes of the evolving cascading landslides after a strong earthquake. This study budgets the mass movements on the hillslopes and in the channels in the first eight years since the Wenchuan earthquake and verify a conservation in mass movements. A system illustrating the evolution and interactions of mass movement after a strong earthquake is proposed.

Abstract:FaTing mountain landslide, which locates in Xue town, Li county of Sichuan Province, is a seismic secondary geological hazard triggered by Wenchuan earthquake of May.12.2008. The tremendous earthquake caused the trailing edge of the FaTing mountain slide cracking and the soil of slide surface a large deformation. This earthquake-induced landslide was also triggered by the heavy rainfall, and it had been recognized as a serious threat to the houses and roads below the slope before it was prevented and mitigated. In this paper, based on the field investigation, an exhaustively comparison of the basic characteristics of landslide before and after earthquake is proposed, thus the coupling progress between endogenetic and exogenetic geological processes is analyzed, and the landslide triggering factors by earthquake are analyzed, too. According to studies above, stability calculation before and after the earthquake is conducted and the landslide countermeasures is proposed, including crack sealing, interception drain, loose mass removal and retaining wall. This study is also supposed to serve as a consult for related landslide mitigation and monitoring work.
Geotechnical Impact of 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:This paper reviews the geotechnical impact of the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake gleaned from references obtained through internet and other sources. It briefly describes the seismo-tectonic and geological setting of the seismic source region, and discusses various geotechnical aspects of the event. Strong ground motions and fault displacements in a setting of steep mountainous terrains trigger many failures of natural slopes and man-made structures. Coseismic hazards include landslides, debris flows and formation of landslide dams. These ground failures not only increase earthquake damage and hamper rescue and recovery effort, but also generate a secondary flood hazard due to potential breach of landslide dams. The epicentral region has also many high water-storage embankment dams, which seem to fare quite well. Finally, the event has set the stage for latent geological hazard caused by earthquake-weakened slopes and/or metastable landslide/debris-flow deposits. This hazard would materialize either in an aftershock or heavy storm/snow-melt event.

Recognition of the risk of landslide dams associated with changing influencing factors is to identify the risk grade and provide early warning of oncoming failure, while quantitative risk analysis of landslide dams due to many influencing factors changing in spatiotemporal domain is currently lacking. We applied the model to analyze the risk level of the Tangjiashan landslide dam caused by the Wenchuan Ms 8.0 earthquake. The risk evaluation, obtained according to the analysis of the influencing factors located in the risk assessment grade criteria, clearly shows that the risk reaches a higher level at that moment. Our analysis shows that the risk level of landslide dams can be quantitatively analyzed with our assessment method. Our results suggest that the risk assessment system can be an effective measure to dynamically predict the risk level and provide a sufficient early warning of the oncoming hazard by analyzing the variables of influencing factors at different times.

Abstract:Abstract While earthquakes are well-known to trigger surface hazards and initiate hazard cascades, whether surface hazards can instead trigger earthquakes remains underexplored. In 2018, two landslides on the Tibetan plateau created landslide-dammed lakes which subsequently breached and caused catastrophic outburst floods. Here we build an earthquake catalog using machine-learning and cross-correlation-based methods which shows there was a statistically significant increase in earthquake activity (local magnitude ≤ 2.6) as the landslide-dammed lake approached peak water level which returned to the background level after dam breach. We further find that ~90% of the seismicity occurred where Coulomb stress increased due to the combined effect of direct loading and pore pressure diffusion. The close spatial and temporal correlation between the calculated Coulomb stress increase and earthquake activity suggests that the earthquakes were triggered by these landslide hazard cascades. Finally, our Coulomb stress modeling considering the properties of landslide-dammed lakes and reservoir-induced earthquakes globally suggests that earthquake triggering by landslide-dammed lakes and similar structures may be a ubiquitous phenomenon. Therefore, we propose that earthquake-surface hazard interaction can include bidirectional triggering which should be properly accounted for during geological hazard assessment and management in mountainous regions.
