Abstract:OBJECTIVES:As the primary cause of lung cancer, whether smoking confers the same risk of lung cancer for women as men is unclear. Therefore, we aimed to compare male and female susceptibility for cigarette smoking-attributable lung cancer. METHODS:A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by searching articles published up to July 2013 in three online databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Database). All studies estimated the association of cigarette smoking with the risk of lung cancer between men and women, respectively. A random effects model with inverse variance weighting was used to pool data. Male to female ratio of relative risk (RRR) was calculated to compare male and female susceptibility for cigarette smoking-attributable lung cancer. RESULTS:47 articles containing 404,874 individuals were included in the final analysis. Compared with non-smokers, male to female RRR was 1.61 (95%CI: 1.37, 1.89) among current smokers. Based on pathological type, adenocarcinoma had the highest RRR (1.42; 95%CI: 0.86, 2.35), followed by squamous cancer and small cell lung cancer. Furthermore, compared with non-smoking men, current smoking men had higher risk of lung cancer than women in spite of smoking quantity, smoking duration or years since quitting. CONCLUSIONS:These findings indicated that males had higher susceptibility for cigarette smoking-attributable lung cancer than females. It is contradicted with traditional opinion that females would be more easily suffered from cigarette smoking-attributable health problems than males. Hence, tobacco control is very crucial in both males and females.
Gender Differences in Modifiable Risk Factors for Hip Fracture: 10-Year Follow-Up of a Prospective Study of 0.5 Million Chinese Adults.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Little is known about the incidence rates and importance of major modifiable risk factors for hip and major osteoporotic fractures in low- and middle-income countries. We estimated the age- and sex-specific incidence of hip, major osteoporotic, and any fractures and their associated risk factors in Chinese adults.METHODS:This was a prospective study of 512,715 adults, aged 30-79 years, recruited from 10 diverse areas in China from 2004 to 2008 and followed up for 10 years. Age- and sex-specific incidence rates were estimated, and Cox regression was used to yield adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and population attributable fractions for risk factors.RESULTS:The incidence rates of hip fracture in Chinese adults were 5.1 (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.0-5.3) per 10,000 person-years; they were higher in women than in men and increased by two- to threefold per 10-year older age. Among men, five risk factors for hip fracture, including low education (HR = 1.23; 95% CI 1.04-1.45), regular smoker (1.22, 1.03-1.45), lower weight (1.59, 1.34-1.88), alcohol drinker (1.18, 1.02-1.36), and prior fracture (1.62, 1.33-1.98), accounted for 44.3% of hip fractures. Among women, lower weight (1.30, 1.15-1.46), low physical activity (1.22, 1.10-1.35), diabetes (1.62, 1.41-1.86), prior fracture (1.54, 1.33-1.77), and self-rated poor health (1.29, 1.13-1.47) accounted for 24.9% of hip fractures. Associations of risk factors with major osteoporotic or any fractures were weaker than those with hip fractures.CONCLUSIONS:The age- and sex-specific incidence rates of hip fracture in Chinese adults were comparable with those in Western populations. Five potentially modifiable factors accounted for half of the hip fractures in men and one quarter in women.

Abstract:Background: In recent years, epidemiologic studies have reported controversial results relating cigarette smoking to myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) risk. A meta-analysis was performed to assess such potential relationship between cigarette smoking and incidence of MDS.Methods: A search of literature published before October 2012 for observational studies evaluating the association between cigarette smoking and MDS, returned 123 articles and of these, 14 were selected for this study. The outcomes from these studies were calculated and reported as odds ratios (OR). Quality assessments were performed with the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Heterogeneity was evaluated by the I 2 index and source of heterogeneity was detected by sensitivity analyses. Finally, publication bias was assessed through visual inspection of funnel plots and Egger's test.Results: The pooled OR of developing MDS in ever-smokers was 1.45 (95% CI, 1.25 to 1.68) versus non-smokers. Current and former smokers had increased risks of MDS, with ORs of 1.81 (95% CI, 1.24 to 2.66) and 1.67 (95% CI, 1.42 to 1.96), respectively. In subset analyses, ever-smokers had increased risks of developing MDS if they were living in the United States, or in Europe, female in gender, had refractory anemia (RA)/RA with ringed sideroblasts (RARS) or RA with excess blasts (RAEB)/RAEB in transformation (RAEBt), respectively. Our results demonstrated that the association was stronger in individuals who smoked >= 20 cigarettes/day (OR, 1.62; 95% CI, 1.03 to 2.55) versus those who smoked,20 cigarettes/day (OR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.13 to 1.64). Moreover, individuals who smoked more than 20 pack-years had increased MDS risk (OR, 1.94; 95% CI, 1.29 to 2.92).Conclusion: Our outcomes show that smoking increases the risk of developing MDS in ever-smokers who are current or former smokers. We also demonstrate here that positive association between cigarette smoking and risk of MDS exists, and occurs in a dose-dependent manner.

Abstract:The relationship between smoking and venous thromboembolism (VTE) is unclear, as a result we conducted a meta-analysis to assess the association between smoking and VTE. A comprehensive search was conducted to identify studies evaluating the relationship between smoking and VTE. Two reviewers independently selected studies and extracted data. The data were analyzed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software, version 2. Twenty-one studies were included. Our findings show current smoking (RR 1.24; 95% CI: 1.14-1.35) and former smoking (RR 1.05; 95% CI: 1.01-1.10) were associated with increased VTE risk. There was a dose-response relationship between cigarettes smoked per day and VTE: 1-14 cigarettes/day: RR 1.20; 95% CI: 1.08-1.34, I2 = 0%; 15-24 cigarettes/day: RR 1.33; 95% CI: 1.15-1.54, I2 = 0%; > 25 cigarettes/day: RR 1.63; 95% CI: 1.37-1.95, I2 = 6%. Our findings show smoking is a risk factor for VTE with a dose-response relationship.

Increased Risk Of Hip Fracture Related To Cardiovascular Disease: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) might have a relationship to hip fracture risk. Many studies have investigated this hypothesis but provided conflicting and inconclusive findings. In this study, we aim to validate the potential association between CVD and hip fracture risk by pooling all available publications. After a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Embase, Wanfang and CNKI databases from their inception up to June 20, 2017, a total of 13 independent studies were identified and included in our study. The pooled relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated to assess the strength of the association. The results from this meta-analysis showed that CVD is positively associated with the risk of hip fracture, suggesting a risk role of CVD in the development of hip fracture (RR = 1.67, 95% CI 1.39-1.99, P < 0.001). Stratified analyses by study design further confirmed the pooled findings. CVD is related to increased risk of hip fracture among Caucasians but not Asians. Our pioneering findings provide strong evidence for a risk effect of CVD on hip fracture, particularly in the Caucasian population.
Coffee and tea drinking in relation to risk of hip fracture in the Singapore Chinese Health Study

Abstract:Meta-analyses of studies conducted among Western populations suggest that coffee consumption does not affect osteoporotic fracture risk. However, experimental studies have shown that the effect of caffeine on bone health may depend on dosage. We examined the associations between consumption of coffee, tea and caffeine and risk of hip fracture in an Asian cohort. In a population-based prospective cohort of 63,257 Chinese men and women aged 45-74 years in Singapore, a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to assess habitual consumption of coffee and tea at baseline. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for risk of hip fracture with adjustment for potential confounders. During a mean follow-up of 16.7 years, 2502 incident hip fracture cases were identified. Compared to coffee drinkers <1 cup/week, those who drank ≥4 cups/day had a statistically significant higher risk to develop hip fractures, the HR (95% CI) was 1.32 (1.07, 1.63) in the whole cohort analysis, 1.46 (1.01, 2.10) for men and 1.33 (1.02, 1.72) for women. Among postmenopausal women, compared to those who drank coffee <1 cup/week, drinking 2-3 cups/day was associated with the lowest risk [HR: 0.88 (0.76, 1.01)] and drinking ≥4 cups/day was associated with the highest risk [HR: 1.31 (1.00, 1.71)]. Similar associations with caffeine intake were found among postmenopausal women. Restricted spline analyses suggested a non-linear association between coffee/caffeine consumption and hip fracture risk in postmenopausal women (p for non-linearity ≤ 0.05). No association was found with tea consumption in either sex. These data suggest that drinking coffee ≥4 cups/day is associated with a higher hip fracture risk, while a moderate intake may alleviate risk in postmenopausal women. Future studies should corroborate these results to determine levels of optimal coffee consumption in relation to bone health.

Abstract:Background: Genetic factors are reported to affect fracture incidence. Many groups have explored the correlation of fracture risk with ESR1 IVS1-397T>C. The observed associations, however, are largely inconsistent. This meta-analysis of data from early-released studies was performed in an effort to determine the role of IVS1-397T>C in fracture. Methods: Relevant studies were searched through Pubmed, Embase, ScienceDirect, and Wiley Online Library databases. 16 studies meeting all selection criteria were finally identified. We calculated ORs with 95% CIs to assess risk of fracture. Subgroup analyses were performed by subtype, ethnicity and gender. Results: Data on 2916 cases and 19170 controls were analyzed in the meta-analysis. Overall, we found moderately decreased risk in association with IVS1-397 CC genotype (OR = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.73-0.92; OR = 0.84, 95% CI = 0.76-0.94). The decrease persisted in both hip fracture (OR = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.71-0.94; OR = 0.83, 95% CI = 0.73-0.94) and vertebral fracture (OR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.50-0.91; OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.64-0.97; OR = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.68-0.98) when data were stratified by subtype. We also found a significant trend of decreasing risk in relation to the CC genotype in Caucasian, male and female. All fixed-effects meta-analysis results were homogeneous. Conclusion: The meta-analysis demonstrates that risk of fracture seems likely to be decreased due to IVS1-397 CC or CT genotype.
Male risk factors for hip fracture-a 30-year follow-up study in 7,495 men

Abstract:Summary: Risk factors for hip fracture were studied in 7,495 randomly selected men during 30 years; 451 men had a hip fracture. High degree of leisure-time, but not work-related, physical activity, high occupational class, and high body mass index (BMI) protected against hip fracture. Smoking, tall stature, interim stroke, and dementia increased the risk. Purpose: The purpose was to prospectively study risk factors for hip fracture in men. Methods: We studied midlife determinants of future hip fractures in 7,495 randomly selected men aged 46-56 years in Gothenburg, Sweden. The subjects were investigated in 1970-1973 and followed for over 30 years. Questionnaires were used regarding lifestyle factors, psychological stress, occupational class, and previous myocardial infarction, stroke, and diabetes mellitus. Alcohol problems were assessed with the aid of registers. Using the Swedish hospital discharge register, data were collected on intercurrent stroke and dementia diagnoses and on first hip fractures (X-ray-verified). Results: Four hundred fifty-one men (6%) had a hip fracture. Age, tall stature, low occupational class, tobacco smoking, alcoholic intemperance, and interim stroke or dementia were independently associated with the risk of hip fracture. There were inverse associations with leisure-time physical activity, BMI, and coffee consumption. The gradient of risk for one standard deviation of multivariable risk decreased with time since measurement yet was a good alternative to dual energy X-ray absorptiometry measurements. Conclusions: High degree of leisure-time physical activity, high occupational class, and high BMI protected against hip fracture. However, work-related physical activity was not protective. Smoking, tall stature, and interim stroke or dementia increased the risk.
Sex differences in clinical outcomes amongst 1105 patients admitted with hip fractures

Abstract:Amongst hip fracture admissions, mortality is higher in men than in women. However, sex differences in other care-quality measures have not been well-documented. We aimed to examine sex differences in mortality as well as a wide range of underlying health indicators and clinical outcomes in adults ≥ 60 year of age admitted with hip fractures from their own homes to a single NHS hospital between April-2009 and June-2019. Sex differences in delirium, length of stay (LOS) and mortality in hospital, readmission, and discharge destination, were examined by logistic regression. There were 787 women and 318 men of similar mean age (± SD): 83.1 year (± 8.6) and 82.5 year (± 9.0), respectively ( P = 0.269). There were no sex differences in history of dementia or diabetes, anticholinergic burden, pre-fracture physical function, American Society of Anesthesiologists grades, or surgical and medical management. Stroke and ischaemic heart disease, polypharmacy, and alcohol consumption were more common in men. After adjustment for these differences and age, men had greater risk of delirium (with or without cognitive impairment) within one day of surgery: OR = 1.75 (95%CI 1.14–2.68), LOS ≥ 3 weeks in hospital: OR = 1.52 (1.07–2.16), mortality in hospital: OR = 2.04 (1.14–3.64), and readmission once or more after 30 days of a discharge: OR = 1.53 (1.03–2.31). Men had a lower risk of a new discharge to residential/nursing care: OR = 0.46 (0.23–0.93). The present study revealed that, in addition to a greater risk of mortality than women, men also had many other adverse health outcomes. These findings, which have not been well-documented, serve to stimulate future targeted preventive strategies and research.

Abstract:BackgroundHip fracture is common and associated with poor outcomes in elderly patients. This meta-analysis aims to investigate the risk factors that might increase the mortality rate in elderly patients with hip fracture.MethodsPubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were systematically searched for observational studies regarding the prognostic factors of mortality in elderly patients with hip fracture. A fixed-effects or random-effects model was used to calculate pooled hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs).ResultsEighteen cohort studies, involving 223,875 patients, were included in this meta-analysis. The most prominent factors associated with mortality were higher age (HR 1.51, 95% CI 1.37, 1.67; P < 0.001), male gender (HR 1.91, 95% CI 1.67, 2.19; P < 0.001), cognitive impairment (HR 2.06, 95% CI 1.25, 3.40; P = 0.005), delirium (HR 2.14, 95% CI 1.50, 3.05; P < 0.001), dementia (HR 2.72, 95% CI 1.41, 5.26; P = 0.003), depression (HR 1.71, 95% CI 1.43, 2.05; P < 0.001), living with caregiver (HR 1.61, 95% CI 1.43, 1.82; P < 0.001), cardiovascular disease (HR 2.10, 95% CI 1.14, 3.86; P = 0.018), renal disease (HR 1.66, 95% CI 1.52, 1.82; P < 0.001), and malignancy (HR 1.75, 95% CI 1.30, 2.37; P = 0.031), whereas respiratory disease (HR 1.49, 95% CI 0.99, 2.24; P = 0.056), diabetes (HR 1.15, 95% CI 0.96, 1.37; P = 0.121), and smoking (HR 1.54, 95% CI 0.64, 3.71; P = 0.337) did not increase the risk of mortality.ConclusionThe current study investigated several factors that might increase the risk of mortality in elderly patients with hip fracture. Further studies are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of specific interventions to reduce the risk of mortality.

Hormone replacement therapy and hip fracture risk: effect modification by tobacco smoking, alcohol intake, physical activity, and body mass index

Abstract:The authors prospectively studied the overall effect of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) on hip fracture risk and the effect modification by behavioral habits and body mass index. A total of 6,159 postmenopausal women from the Copenhagen Center for Prospective Population Studies, Copenhagen, Denmark, with initial examination in 1976-1978 were followed until 1993. During follow-up 363 hip fractures were identified. Women who reported current use of HRT had a lower risk of hip fracture as compared with women who were nonusers (relative risk (RR) = 0.71; 95 percent confidence interval (CI): 0.50, 1.01). Use of HRT was associated with a lower risk of hip fracture in former (RR = 0.55; 95 percent CI: 0.22, 1.37) and current (RR = 0.61; 95 percent CI: 0.38, 0.99) smokers but not in never smokers (RR = 1.10; 95 percent CI: 0.60, 2.03). HRT was also associated with lower risk of hip fracture among alcohol drinkers (RR = 0.36; 95 percent CI: 0.14, 0.90) and among sedentary women (RR = 0.42; 95 percent CI: 0.18, 0.98) but not among nondrinkers (RR = 0.99; 95 percent CI: 0.61, 1.61) and physically active women (RR = 0.92; 95 percent CI: 0.42, 2.04). There was no evidence of interaction between use of HRT and body mass index. In conclusion, the protective effect of HRT on hip fracture appears to be strongest in women who ever smoked, in women who drink alcohol, and in women who are sedentary. The results suggest that history of behavioral habits offers important information concerning the probable degree of protection against hip fracture afforded by HRT.
Smoking‐Induced Risk of Osteoporosis Is Partly Mediated by Cadmium From Tobacco Smoke: The MrOS Sweden Study

Abstract:Cigarette smoking is a risk factor for osteoporosis and bone fracture. Moreover, smoking causes exposure to cadmium, which is a known risk factor for osteoporosis. It is hypothesized that part of smoking‐induced osteoporosis may be mediated via cadmium from tobacco smoke. We investigated this hypothesis using mediation analysis in a Swedish cohort of elderly men. This study was performed in 886 elderly men from the Swedish cohort of the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) study. Urinary samples, bone mineral density (BMD), smoking data, and other background information were obtained at baseline in 2002–2004. Urinary cadmium was analyzed in baseline samples and adjusted for creatinine. The cohort was followed up until August 2018 for fracture incidence, based on the X‐ray register. Mediation analysis was conducted to evaluate the indirect effect (via cadmium) of smoking on both BMD and fractures. Time to first fracture was analyzed using the accelerated failure time (AFT) model and Aalen's additive hazard model. The mean level of urinary cadmium was 0.25 μg/g creatinine. There were significant inverse associations between smoking and total body, total hip, and trochanter BMD. The indirect effects via cadmium were estimated to be 43% of the total effects of smoking for whole body BMD, and even more for total hip and trochanter BMD. Smoking was also associated with higher risk of all fractures and major osteoporosis fractures. The indirect effects via cadmium were largest in non‐vertebral osteoporosis fractures and hip fractures, constituting at least half of the total effects, in both the AFT and Aalen's model. The findings in this study provide evidence that cadmium exposure from tobacco smoke plays an important role in smoking‐induced osteoporosis.This article is protected by copyright. Investigation the Prevalence and Risk Factors of Vertebral Fracture in Community-Dwelling Elderly in Shanghai

Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence and risk factors of vertebral fractures in the elderlys in Shanghai community. Methods Stratified sampling was performed according to the age distribution of the population in 3 urban and 2 suburban communities in Shanghai, and a total of 2 929 old people aged over 65 years were enrolled. The thoracic and lumbar radiographs and questionnaires were obtained in all the participants. The diagnosis of vertebral fractures were evaluated using Genant′s semi-quantitative method, and the prevalence of vertebral fracture was calculated. Logistic regression was used to analyze the risk factors of vertebral fracture. Results ( 1) The prevalence of vertebral fractures in community-dwelling elderly was 14.4%totally,and 20.1%in individuals above 80 years old,which was significantly higher than the others (P<0.05). The prevalence of vertebral fractures in females was significantly higher than that in males (18.5%vs 12.4%, P<0.05). (2) The most common vertebral fracture sites were T12 and L1. Grade 1 vertebral fracture was most common in our cohort. The proportions of grade 2 and grade 3 were significant higher in females than that in males (30.6% vs 17.0%, P<0.05). (3) Gender and sex had an interaction effect on the prevalence of vertebral fractures. Prevalence of vertebral fractures increased steadily with age in both genders, although the gradient was steeper for women (P<0.001). (4) Logistic regression analysis showed that: female, age, parental hip fracture history, previous fracture history, and alcohol consumption were risk factors of vertebral fractures in community elderly. Smoking, long-term use of glucocorticoid, various diseases associated with secondary osteoporosis had no significant correlation with vertebral fracture. Conclusion The vertebral fractures were more common and serious in women than in men in community elderly. Age was significantly correlated with the presence of vertebral fracture in women than that in men. Female, age, parental hip fracture history, previous fracture history, and alcohol consumption were risk factors of vertebral fractures in community elderlys.
Tobacco and alcohol consumption and the risk of frailty and falling: a Mendelian randomisation study

Abstract:Background Epidemiological data have suggested that tobacco and alcohol consumption were associated with the risk of frailty and falling, but it is yet unclear whether these associations are of a causal nature. Thus, we conducted two-sample Mendelian randomisation analysis using genetic instruments to determine the causal associations of tobacco and alcohol consumption on frailty and falls. Methods Independent instrumental variables strongly (p<5E–09) associated with tobacco and alcohol consumption were obtained from the genome-wide association study (GWAS) and Sequencing Consortium of Alcohol and Nicotine use (up to 2 669 029 participants). Summary statistics of the frailty index (FI, N=175 226) and falling risk (N=451 179) were from the two latest published GWAS datasets on FI and falling risk. Results Using the inverse-variance weighted method, our results showed that genetically determined initiation of smoking was significantly associated with an increased FI (β=0.34, 95% CI=0.29 to 0.40, p=5.48E–33) and risk of falling (OR=1.39, 95% CI=1.30 to 1.50, p=1.01E–20). In addition, the age of initiation of smoking and cigarettes consumption per day was negatively and positively associated with both FI and falls, respectively. Current smokers were prone to having a higher FI and falling risk than individuals who quit smoking. There was no significant causal association between alcohol use and the risk of frailty and falling. Similar results were obtained using other statistical approaches with good stability. Conclusions Our findings demonstrate that tobacco use, but not alcohol drinking, significantly increases the risk of frailty and falling. Future studies are warranted to clarify the underlying physiopathological mechanisms.

Abstract:Hip fracture and falls are significant health concerns among middle‐aged and older adults. Our findings highlight the significant inverse association between handgrip strength (HGS) and the risk of hip fracture and falls in both males and females aged 45 years and above. Assessing handgrip strength may serve as a valuable tool for predicting fracture and fall risk. Objective Hip fracture and falls are significant health concerns. Handgrip strength (HGS) is closely associated with overall muscle strength and physical health. However, the longitudinal relationship between HGS and the risk of hip fractures and falls remains unclear, particularly regarding gender differences. This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the association between HGS and the risk of hip fracture and falls in individuals aged 45 years and above, considering gender‐specific differences over a 4‐year period. Methods This study included 10,092 participants (4471 men and 5621 women) aged 45 years and above from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Incidents of hip fractures and falls were recorded during a 4‐year follow‐up, along with various demographic and clinical factors. Participants were categorized into five groups based on their HGS quintiles. Logistic regression models were employed to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess the relationship between HGS and hip fracture/fall risk. Results During the 4‐year follow‐up period, 223 cases of hip fracture (2.2%) and 1831 cases of falls (18.1%) were documented. Abstract:Previous observational studies on the relationship between sleep characteristics and fracture have yielded contradictory results. The goal of this study was to replicate the findings in a large longitudinal cohort and then conduct a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to infer the causality between sleep behaviors and fracture risk. Based on data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) including 17,708 participants, we found that individuals with short sleep duration (<5 h) (OR [odds ratio] = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.07–2.44) or restless sleep (OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.10–2.19) have a higher risk of hip fracture. A U-shaped relationship between nighttime sleep duration and hip fracture risk (p-nonlinear = 0.01) was observed using restricted cubic spline regression analysis. Through joint effect analysis, we found that participants with short sleep duration (<5 h) combined with midday napping could significantly decrease hip fracture incidence. We further inferred the causal relationship between self-reported sleep behaviors and hip fracture using the MR approach. Among four sleep phenotypic parameters (sleep duration, daytime napping, chronotype, and insomnia), we found a modest causal relationship between sleep duration and fracture (OR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.48 to 0.99, p = 0.04). However, no causal relationship was observed for other sleep traits. In conclusion, our findings suggest that short sleep duration has a potential detrimental effect on hip fracture. Improving sleep patterns is of significance for developing hip fracture preventive strategies in the middle-aged and the elderly populations.

Abstract:Hip fractures represent a significant public health issue due to high incidence in aging society. Our study further proved that increased risk for hip fractures in adults is associated with weather conditions. Purpose: Hip fractures represent a significant public health issue due to high incidence in aging society. Evidence of the short-term effects of weather on the risk of hip fracture is limited and inconsistent. We aimed to examine the associations between weather conditions and daily hospital admissions for hip fracture in adults in China. Methods: A national time-series analysis between 2014 and 2017 was conducted. Data on daily hospital admissions for hip fracture were obtained from the database of Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance (UEBMI) and Urban Resident Basic Medical Insurance (URBMI). Weather conditions were acquired from the China Meteorological Data Sharing Service Center. Based on a time-stratified case-crossover design, conditional Poisson regression was used to estimate the impact on relative risk (RR) of weather conditions on hospital admissions for hip fracture. Results: During the study period, a total of 137,504 hospital admissions for hip fractures were identified. All analyzed weather conditions showed consistent significant associations at lag 0 day for each 10 mm increase in precipitation, 10 m/s in wind speed, and 10°C in temperature, with the RR value being 1.079 (95% CI, 1.074-1.083) for precipitation, 1.404 (95% CI, 1.346-1.465) for wind speed, and 1.558 (95% CI, 1.546-1.570) for temperature. Women were more vulnerable to be affected by precipitation and temperature. Conclusion: In conclusion, increased risk for hip fractures in adults is associated with weather conditions. The improved understanding of the relationship between weather conditions and hip fractures hospital admission can be useful for resource allocation and provider preparedness.
