Abstract:Peking University Library owns a rich collection of 1.5 million copies of ancient books, being the third large collection among libraries in China and the largest among China's university libraries. For various reasons, some of ancient books have been in bad disrepair. It is not only a dangerous situation for the precious ancient documents to pass on, but also an interference with teaching and research in the university. Based on the years of experience as staff of Rare Books Department, the authors have made an analysis on the reasons of bad condition of ancient books and the conservation problems such as the preservation condition, management, shortage of funds and training technical personnel for conservation. Then they offer helpful suggestions to solve the problems.

Abstract:In the period of Ming and Qing Dynasty,bamboo paper was widely used in writing and printing.And now,it is also a very important and burdensome work for archival and ancient books restoration.While the lack of quality bamboo paper for restoration becomes a problem that crying out for solution.According to our survey,some places in Fujian,Jiangxi and Zhejiang provinces are still producing bamboo paper that fit for archival and ancient books restoration,which should be in addition protected and supported.Yet there also exists some other problems today,such as the under-emphasize of bamboo paper,the decline of bamboo paper quality,the disconnection between production,supply and marketing,and with no successor.

Abstract:Historical buildings carry the key technologies and practical values throughout the development of architectural heritage. Investigating the restoration techniques for historical buildings under various forms of damage is an essential step in the conservation and utilization of these structures. Utilizing Web of Science (WOS) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) as the primary databases, this study employs the PRISMA methodology to search and screen relevant research literature. A comprehensive review of the retained literature is conducted, analyzing publication trends, co-citation networks of authors and keywords, among other characteristics. To enhance the visibility of restoration techniques, three-dimensional modeling diagrams are created using actual case information of material or component damage as a reference, thereby increasing the referential value of the review content on historical building restoration techniques. The study provides a thorough review of over 30 restoration techniques corresponding to 9 types of damage from the perspectives of historical building walls and wooden components. Additionally, new materials or technologies mentioned in the retrieved literature are categorized; for instance, in the context of moisture-proof treatment for brick masonry, traditional methods are explained, and new research on electrochemical desalination and lipid-based waterproof materials is discussed and evaluated. Finally, given the multifaceted value and the variable mechanisms of damage in historical buildings, an analysis of the restoration process and techniques reveals that the restoration of historical buildings is a complex interdisciplinary process. The development and implementation of restoration plans should adhere to the principles of cultural relic protection to ensure their reasonableness and effectiveness, while also considering sustainability and environmental adaptability to protect and reuse historical buildings, thus leveraging their cultural and historical values. Moreover, the advancement of restoration techniques for historical buildings in the future should be based on the inheritance of traditional craftsmanship and materials, while also integrating new technologies, materials, and concepts to enhance the applicability and efficiency of traditional techniques.

Abstract:AbstractThroughout the ages, there have been so many cultural heritages, suffering from natural damage caused by wind, rain, thunder, fire, earthquake, insects and mildew, and also from man-made damage resulting from inadequate conservation and improper handling. Therefore, cultural heritages are in urgent need of conservation and restoration. The conservation of cultural heritages refers to creating a safe and appropriate environment and taking positive measures to increase their life spans and avoid deterioration and damage. Thus, the status of cultural heritages and their surrounding environment, such as temperature, humidity, CO2 density and the state of microorganisms and vegetation should be monitored in real-time. In addition, the storeroom, the exhibition hall and even transportation should also be safeguarded. Abstract:In the past few decades, a series of research, restoration and protection have been performed on the ancient murals in Mogao Grottoes. These treatments played significant roles in the conservation of the elegant art in Dunhuang. But whether the protection and reinforcement are still active and which materials are more appropriate remain unknown. These issues are crucial for the conservation of murals. On-site investigation on the murals in Mogao Grottoes has been carried out. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the renewed diseases of the murals which have been repaired before. It will also provide useful information about the function of conservation materials and their degradation mechanism.

Abstract:Ancient architecture carries Chinese culture, which is helpful to understand the tradition. Timber structure is the main structure of ancient Chinese buildings, and most of the ancient timber structures have been overserved and have been damaged to varying degrees. Although timber structure is made of convenient materials, its low strength and vulnerability to corrosion increase the difficulty of the protection of ancient buildings, so the restoration of ancient buildings is imminent. Through literature research, this paper summarized the repair principles and reinforcement methods, and analyzed the effective methods and research progress of the repair and reinforcement of ancient timber structures from the traditional and modern aspects, and provided reference for the repair work of ancient timber structures.

Abstract:Several pieces of antiquities such as sword, mirror etc were analysed by scientific methods for conservation purpose. The methods used were X-ray photography, metallurgical microscopy, XRD, SEM, AES. The results have shown much information about the composition, microstructure and fabrication method of the antiquities. This not only helps to the conservation, but are also important to archaeological and historical research.

Abstract:In order to improve the intelligence of paper ancient books restoration and reduce the consumption of manpower and material resources, the machine vision detection technology is proposed to detect the damaged area of ancient books surface. In this paper, the experiment is carried out on the system platform that has been built to detect and repair the damage of ancient paper books. Based on the damaged paper obtained from the system platform, image denoising, image binarization, edge detection and other operations are carried out to obtain the contour position information of the damaged area, which provides data support for the generation of the motion track required by the system, so as to complete the whole repair work of ancient books. Furthermore, the application interface is developed using Qt. After testing, the application has good effect and fast speed in detecting damaged areas of ancient books, meeting the needs of actual use.

Abstract:The Conservator-Restorer: a Definition of the Profession and E.C.C.O. Professional Guidelines are authoritative documents on the interpretation of the responsibilities of cultural heritage conservation restorers. Through the interpretation of these documents, this paper puts forward the following point views: the professional education of ancient book restorers has its own particularity and should be distinguished from that of other ancient book protectors. The training of ancient book restorers should be guided by its professional responsibilities, and “science”, “craft” and “humanity” can be jointly built to improve professional education.

Abstract:The hard historic heritages or cultural relics, including monuments and sculptures, are not only the witness of histroy, but also a kind of precious tourist resources.More and more attentions on the deterioration of hard cultural relic has been paid by many researchers since recent years. The related research methods,research content, and the study on the influence factor of weatherng and deterioration have been reviewed in this paper.Some main fields of the related research have been put forward as follws:weathering rate and related mechanism, and field observation and measurement, durability in different environment and the related lab simulation, mathematic models of deterioration with fractal theory and digital surface model technology, and at last the ways of conservation of the relics.

Abstract:In the process of studying the history of books classifications of Nanjing University Library,several original guidance books of classification are found to be lost or damaged severely.These earlier classifications were widely used to guide the work in Nanjing University Library and played a crucial role on the history of books classification.To conserve these cultural heritages more effectively,Nanjing University Library spares no efforts to make "Nanjing University Library classification" be full-text digitized,and then makes a web database based on AMP frame.This project can provide a clear relation of the information of books and improve the books classification system,so that Nanjing University Library can provide more effective and better services for staff and students.

Abstract:Abstract At present, the history of Chinese ancient architecture has a long history and independent development. As early as The Shang Dynasty, Chinese architectural system has been initially formed. Until the beginning of the 20th century, it has always maintained its own structure and layout principles, and has been widely spread to other countries. BIM Technology is a rapidly rising digital modeling technology in recent years, which is widely used in the construction industry. Its intuition and accuracy have become the advantages of its rapid development. At the same time, BIM Technology can also better protect ancient buildings from the perspective of information. Starting from the ancient building restoration industry, this paper analyzes the current development trend of the domestic ancient building industry, and summarizes the key problems existing in the existing ancient building restoration methods. This paper analyzes and discusses the advantages and functions of BIM technology. According to the example of the old office building of Fengtian Zhaoxin Kiln Company, a BIM model is established. Starting from the application of BIM technology in survey and design, construction process management and repair of special parts, the actual application of BIM technology in ancient building repair is discussed, and valuable results are obtained.

Abstract:The digitalization of frescos includes four stages: image acquisition,image digital restoration,image inversion and database issue.Although the copyright of ancient frescos has expired,all the digital products based on them are not duplication of the original works.The image acquisition for the purpose of saving information merely constitutes duplication,and does not incur new copyright.The digital restoration of ancient fresco may create new works,restore or revise the original works.A censorship should be established in terms of the revision,so as to ensure the respect for the ancient fresco.To converse the format and scale the image after restoration merely constitutes duplication.The authentication standards of intellectual work are also manifested in the digitalization of Fresco.The core of an intellectual property is its irreplaceability of the behavior and the alteration of the essential visual parts of the original image.Lastly,in the protection of cultural relic's database regarding its particularity,while the copyright law obeyed,the term of protection should be extended,reasonable monopoly allowed,and special rights of cooperative developers guaranteed.
Restoration and Study on the Fragments of Four Apocryphal Scriptures Among Dunhuang Documents

Abstract:More than one hundred kinds of apocryphal scriptures kept in Dunhuang documents are of high research value, since the vast majority have not been recorded in Buddhist canons published before the Qing dynasty. Most of them are fragments, however, which severely impedes research work. Based on comparative analysis of the incomplete characters, context continuation, formats, and calligraphic styles, twenty-six fragments of four apocryphal scriptures, namely Wuliang Dacijiao Jing, Yaoxing Shesheng Jing, Zanseng Gongdejing and Fomu Jing,have been categorized into twelve groups. The more complete information provided by previously restored fragments allows for a more objective and reliable judgment on the form, contents, and nature of these texts.

Abstract:Abstract: Ancient books form part of the strong cultural heritage of China and are significant examples of unique Chinese traditional culture. With advances in information technology, digitization has become an important method to address the contradiction of preservation versus utilization of ancient books. By looking back at the strategic planning for ancient book digitization at the National Library of China, the fundamental status of ancient books collected there is established and the necessity of constructing digital resources of ancient books and of openly sharing these resources is demonstrated. Practical achievements of the National Library of China's ancient book digitization include self-construction at the library, collection outside of the library, and international cooperation. Problems and challenges in digital resource construction and sharing include establishing unified standards of ancient book digitization systems, establishing a unified release platform, raising the ratio of ancient books digitization, and enhancing the level of knowledge service. A survey of overseas Chinese ancient books and digital cooperation countermeasures and suggestions is included. To enhance access to the wisdom of ancient Chinese books, this paper proposes a National Library service transformation.

Abstract:In the new era of city building, In the process of urban construction in the new era, under the influence of various aspects, the culture of southern Fujian as well as cultural relics and ancient buildings have been more or less affected by the impact of the development of modern urbanization. Part of the heritage has shown a tendency to fall into disrepair, and the proper protection and restoration of cultural heritage and ancient buildings in northern Fujian is imminent. This paper analyzes the current situation of the protection of cultural relics and ancient buildings from the introduction of the architecture of southern Fujian and its connotation of culture. To analyze the current situation of the conservation of southern Fujian architecture, and point out its deficiencies to give precise and contemporary suggestions and related conservation strategies, hoping to provide some inspiration to the relevant conservationists.

Abstract:Since the 1970s,a lot of bamboo slips and silks for writing and missing ancient books have been unearthed for us to rethink,re-understand and re-evaluate ancient Chinese academic history,whose significance can be reflected in the five aspects.First,creditability of ancient books can be recognized;second,writing time can be confirmed roughly;third,academic value can be understood further;fourth,new judgment can be made to the academic origins;fifth,the academic history of some vassal state of the Warring States period can be redefined.On the basis of these discoveries,ancient Chinese academic history may be re-written,which will promote ancient Chinese cultural researches.
