Abstract:This paper presents an empirical investigation into the effects of energy transition and digitization on carbon dioxide emissions, serving as a proxy for environmental sustainability, across 28 Chinese provinces from 2000 to 2021. Utilizing both static and dynamic regression analyses, the study reveals a significant driving effect of the energy transition on environmental sustainability, primarily through a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Notably, this influence is more pronounced in the eastern region of China, followed by the central and western regions, indicating regional heterogeneity in the impact of the energy transition. Furthermore, digitization is found to have a substantial moderating effect, enhancing energy conservation and emission reductions. As digitization progresses, its capability to diminish the impact of energy transitions on carbon dioxide emissions becomes more apparent, particularly in the eastern region, while this effect is less marked in central and western China. The study also delves into the nonlinear relationship between energy transitions and carbon dioxide emissions, discovering that increased levels of digitization can exacerbate the negative effects of energy transitions on emissions. These findings offer valuable insights into the dynamics of energy transition and digitalization, highlighting their crucial roles in shaping environmental sustainability in China.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the impacts of energy transformation and digitalization on carbon dioxide emissions, which are used as indicators to measure environmental sustainability. Specifically, by analyzing the data of 28 provinces in China from 2000 to 2021, the research aims to answer the following key questions: 1. **Impact of energy transformation on environmental sustainability**: The research aims to verify whether energy transformation can significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, thereby promoting environmental sustainability. In addition, the research also explores the differences in this impact in different regions (eastern, central and western). 2. **Moderating role of digitalization**: The research examines the moderating role of digitalization in the relationship between energy transformation and environmental sustainability. Specifically, the research analyzes the enhancing effect of digitalization on the carbon dioxide emission reduction effect caused by energy transformation as the digitalization level increases. 3. **Non - linear relationship**: The research further explores the non - linear relationship between energy transformation and carbon dioxide emissions, especially whether a high level of digitalization will exacerbate the negative impact of energy transformation on carbon dioxide emissions. ### Main hypotheses Based on the above research objectives, the paper proposes the following five hypotheses: - **Hypothesis 1**: Energy transformation has a positive impact on environmental sustainability. - **Hypothesis 2**: There is regional heterogeneity in the impact of energy transformation on environmental sustainability. - **Hypothesis 3**: Digitalization can moderate the relationship between energy transformation measures and environmental sustainability. - **Hypothesis 4**: There is regional heterogeneity in the moderating role of digitalization in the relationship between energy transformation measures and environmental sustainability. - **Hypothesis 5**: There is a non - linear relationship between energy transformation and environmental sustainability. ### Research methods To verify these hypotheses, the research adopts a variety of econometric methods, including the fixed - effect model and the System Generalized Method of Moments (System GMM) model. The specific steps are as follows: 1. **Fixed - effect model**: First, use the province - year fixed - effect model to analyze the impact of energy transformation on environmental sustainability. 2. **System Generalized Method of Moments (System GMM) model**: Confirm the results of the fixed - effect model through the System GMM model. 3. **Regional heterogeneity analysis**: Use the province - year fixed - effect model to explore the heterogeneity of the impact of energy transformation on environmental sustainability in Northeast, Central and Western China. 4. **Role of digitalization**: Analyze how digitalization technologies change energy consumption patterns and their environmental impacts. 5. **Interaction effect analysis**: Examine the interaction effects of digitalization and energy transformation in Northeast, Central and Western China. 6. **Threshold regression**: Adopt the threshold regression model to capture the non - linear relationship between energy transformation and carbon dioxide emissions. ### Data sources The research data are sourced from multiple authoritative institutions, including the National Bureau of Statistics, the "China's Outward Foreign Direct Investment Statistical Bulletin", the State Intellectual Property Office, and the annual statistical reports of each province. The main variables and their definitions are shown in Table 1. ### Table 1.
