Abstract:Estimates for the quantum electrodynamical (QED) and dispersion effects on the spin asymmetry of perpendicularly polarized electrons scattered from a Pb208 nucleus are given. The QED effects are calculated nonperturbatively in terms of their respective potentials. For dispersion, the transient nuclear excitations of Pb208 with low multipolarity and energy below 30 MeV are accounted for. Collision energies up to 1 GeV are considered. Radiative corrections to the spin asymmetry in elastic polarized electron-nucleus collisions at high energy

Abstract:Improving the numerical precision, dispersion corrections to the beam-normal spin asymmetry which arise from the dominant nuclear excitations, are estimated up to a collision energy of 1 GeV. A nonperturbative calculation of vacuum polarization and the vertex plus self-energy correction, using optimized potentials, indicates that for small scattering angles both these quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects on the spin asymmetry decrease with energy above 200 MeV and can mostly be neglected at high energies. Examples are given for the 12C and 208Pb nuclei. While our results disagree with the measured high-energy spin asymmetry for 12C, they are able to explain the data on 208Pb near 1 GeV.

Abstract:A potential for the vertex and self-energy correction is derived from the first-order Born theory. The inclusion of this potential in the Dirac equation, together with the Uehling potential for vacuum polarization, allows for a nonperturbative treatment of these QED effects within the phase-shift analysis. Investigating the 12C and 208Pb targets, a considerable deviation of the respective cross-section change from the Born results is found, which becomes larger with increasing momentum transfer. Estimates for the correction to the beam-normal spin asymmetry are also provided. For the 12C nucleus, dispersion effects are considered as well.

Abstract:We have measured the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic scattering of transversely polarized 3 GeV electrons from unpolarized protons at Q(2)=0.15, 0.25 (GeV/c)(2). The results are inconsistent with calculations solely using the elastic nucleon intermediate state and generally agree with calculations with significant inelastic hadronic intermediate state contributions. A(n) provides a direct probe of the imaginary component of the 2 gamma exchange amplitude, the complete description of which is important in the interpretation of data from precision electron-scattering experiments.

Abstract:Dispersion corrections to elastic electron scattering from $^{208}$Pb at energies up to 150 MeV are estimated within the second-order Born approximation. All strong transient nuclear excited states with angular momentum up to $L=3$ and natural parity are taken into consideration. It is found that at small scattering angles the high-lying $L=1$ isovector states provide the dominant contribution to the dispersive change of the differential cross section and of the beam-normal spin asymmetry. At the backmost angles these changes are considerably smaller and are basically due to the isoscalar $L=2$ and, to a lesser extent, $L=3$ states. In comparison with the findings for $^{12}$C, the dispersive cross-section modifications for $^{208}$Pb are significantly larger, while the spin-asymmetry changes are much smaller at all angles. The latter originates from the destructive interference of the multipole contributions in $^{208}$Pb that switch sign when proceeding from $L$ to $L+1$. This mechanism might be the origin of the small beam-normal spin asymmetries recently measured in ${}^{208}$Pb at much larger energies.

Abstract:We correct a mistake in the analytical expression for the energy density given in Phys. Rev. C76, 021902 (2007) [arXiv:0704.3625 [hep-ph]]. The expression should be multiplied by 16. One question then arises; how could it be possible to explain this difference between the analytical and numerical results in the same model if both are correct? We find a subtle problem in the treatment of the randomness of the color source along the longitudinal direction and the treatment of the longitudinal extent of the color source.
