Abstract:One-dimensional column and two-dimensional tank experiments were carried out to determine (1) the physics of foam flow and propagation of foaming gas, foaming liquid, and foam; (2) the pressure distribution along foam flow and the effect of media permeability, foam flow rate and foam quality on foam injection pressure; and (3) the migration and distribution property of foam flow in homogeneous and heterogeneous sediments. The results demonstrated that: (1) gas and liquid front were formed ahead of the foam flow front, the transport speed order is foaming gas. foaming liquid. foam flowing; (2) injection pressure mainly comes from the resistance to bubble migration. Effect of media permeability on foam injection pressure mainly depends on the physics and behavior of foam flow; (3) foam has a stronger capacity of lateral spreading, besides, foam flow was uniformly distributed across the foam-occupied region, regardless of the heterogeneity of porous media.

Abstract:In this work, the flow patterns and pressure losses of 12 kinds of gas–liquid systems (two different surfactants were selected, and their concentrations were changed in an aqueous solution, which served as the test liquid) in horizontal pipes were studied. To explore the potential mechanisms influencing flow patterns, the equilibrium and dynamic surface tensions of surfactant solutions were surveyed, and the aggregate morphologies of surfactants were observed by using cryo-TEM. Based on the experimental findings, a generalized flow pattern map was proposed. Furthermore, the relationship between the pressure loss and the flow pattern of the foam flow was investigated. The results revealed two types of foam flow: full-foaming flow (FFO) and foam flow containing liquid (FCL). Each type of flow had three subflow patterns. The formation of different flow patterns is closely related to the ability of surfactant molecules to adsorb on bubbles and reduce surface tension in a short period, which is affected by aggregates and their structures. The product of the Weber and Bond numbers was determined to be the appropriate combination of non-dimensional numbers for the proposed generalised flow pattern map. Moreover, above a critical Bond number of the gas–liquid system, FFO cannot be formed. Finally, the flow pattern can be effectively separated according to pressure drop data.

Role of surfactant-induced Marangoni effects in droplet dynamics on a solid surface in shear flow

Abstract:We address the dynamics of a surfactant-laden droplet on a solid surface in simple shear flow numerically. Our analysis uses the front-tracking method to take surfactant transport into account. The interfacial tension and the slip coefficient, both of which depend heavily on the surfactant concentration, are fully integrated into the generalized Navier boundary condition to model the moving contact lines. Accurate prediction of droplet motion indicates that the surfactant can change droplet behavior drastically. Surfactant-induced effects, such as interfacial tension reduction, the Marangoni stress, and wettability alternation, are investigated for various capillary numbers, surface wettabilities, elasticity numbers, and surface Péclet numbers. Deformation and motion of a sliding droplet are enhanced by the Marangoni effect, which is associated with an interfacial tension gradient. When the capillary number reaches a critical value, the sliding-to-detachment and detachment-to-pinch-off transitions occur. Both transitions can be triggered and accelerated by a surfactant, especially when convection is dominant. As a result, the critical capillary number decreases, but exhibits a non-monotonic relationship with the elasticity number and Péclet number. The mechanisms that underlie the effect of Marangoni stress are discussed by analyzing the distributions of the surfactant concentration and the hydrodynamic forces exerted on the droplet. Accumulation of surfactants near the receding contact line reverses the local concentration gradient, attempts to change its direction along the interface, and delays droplet detachment. Furthermore, the strong surfactant dilution reduces both the surfactant concentration and the interfacial tension gradient, and thereby increasing the critical value for droplet pinch-off.
Flow Behavior of Two-Dimensional Wet Foam: Effect of Foam Quality

Abstract:The flow behaviors of two-dimensional (2D) wet monodisperse and polydisperse foams are investigated by the quasi-static simulation. We set the same inlet velocity on the cross section of the foam channel and then focus on the elastic-plastic deformation of the 2D wet foam according to the strain caused by the foam flow. The gas fraction in foam is referred to as foam quality and the effects of foam quality on the shear modulus, bubble dynamics, and stress-strain properties are obtained by the simulation. In the elastic domain, the shear modulus of monodisperse foam decreases exponentially with foam quality, but for the polydisperse foam, the shear modulus tends to increase. The shear banding of the polydisperse foam appears in the low strain and disappears gradually as the strain and foam quality increase. We adopt shear rate to represent the change rate of average bubbles displacements versus y-coordinates and find that the distribution of shear rate in the y-direction changes with iteration. Additionally, energy of the foam is stored and dissipated with the elastic-plastic deformation of the foam. The average shear stress generated by the foam structure and the initial increment of normal stress difference caused by the elastic deformation increase with the increase of foam quality.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the gas-liquid interface characteristics of short-chain fluorocarbon surfactant FS-50 and hydrocarbon surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and their mixed systems. The foam properties of SDS, FS-50, and their mixed solutions were experimentally determined. Then, based on the molecular dynamics simulation method, the interaction mechanism of surfactant molecules at the gas-liquid interface was simulated and analyzed by constructing a foam-liquid membrane system containing surfactant molecules and water molecules. The experimental results show that FS-50 can effectively enhance the foam stability when the concentration is lower than 0.16 wt% and the mixing ratio with SDS is not more than 1:1; the simulation results show that FS-50 can change the arrangement of SDS molecules at the gas-liquid interface. Simultaneously, there is a competitive adsorption phenomenon between FS-50 and SDS at the gas-liquid interface. The low mixing ratio FS-50 can increase the thickness of the gas-liquid interface of the mixed system and the ability of SDS to form hydrogen bonds with water, enhance the water-locking ability of SDS, and further improve the stability of the foam liquid film. The interaction mechanism between short-chain fluorocarbons and SDS surfactants at the gas-liquid interface was revealed by simulation, which provided theoretical guidance for optimizing the performance of the foam liquid film.

Abstract:Nanoparticles (NPs) adsorbed at bubble surface have a substantial impact on gas–liquid interface properties, but how to regulate the properties and further control foam flow remaining to be elucidated. Here, the effects of nanoparticle surfactancy on surface rheology, fluidity and shear force field around bubbles were quantitatively analyzed. It was found that the adsorption of nanoparticles on the bubble surface gives rise to surface solidification, the flow velocity close to surface decreased by 76%, meanwhile the shear stress loaded on bubble surface increases sharply. Furthermore, the surface solidification degree or fluidity can be controlled by regulating the packing density of nanoparticles on bubble surface, whereby the bubble flow could be control accordingly, which greatly contribute to the application of foam.

Abstract:Aqueous foam is regarded as a versatile medium in numerous scientific and engineering applications due to its high viscosity and low density. The objective of this study is to investigate the flow characteristics of aqueous foams through the jet device and horizontal pipe. The pressure distribution and foam production capacity are measured at different operating conditions. Experimental results show that the pressure fluctuations reduce significantly by increasing the foam liquid concentration, especially in the downstream of jet device. The bubble flow turns into homogeneous foams gradually when the concentration increases from 0.025% to 0.35%, while the foam behaviors take little change at a higher concentration, and the foamability reaches a limit. Subjected to the large pressure difference produced between the top and bottom of horizontal pipe, aqueous foams undergo a gas–liquid separation at a high terminal pressure, resulting in bubbles at the top and liquid at the bottom. Therefore, the terminal pressure should be kept less than a critical value to hold a good foam pattern. Based on the above contributions, it is believed that the study laid an important foundation for the widespread application of foam technology.

Abstract:Flow effects on chemical reactions at a solid-liquid interface are fundamental to diverse technological applications but remain poorly understood from a molecular perspective. In this work, we demonstrate that the coupling between laminar flow and surface chemistry can be adequately described using classical density functional theory for ion distributions near the surface in conjunction with kinetics modeling and the Navier-Stokes equation. In good agreement with recent experiments, we find that flowing of fresh water over a silica surface may result in drastic changes in the rate of silica dissolution and, consequently, the surface charge density and the interfacial structure. A nonlinear streaming current is predicted when the surface reactions are disturbed by a laminar flow.

Abstract:We present simulations of a 2D liquid foam with finite contact angles, over a wide range of liquid fraction. It is shown that, with the increase of liquid fraction, the variation of average coordination number may be characterized by three different regimes (the "flat" regime, the approximate linear regime and the gentle decreasing regime). The detailed distribution of the coordination number is displayed; the fraction of bubbles with the same number of neighbours, as a function of the average coordination number, follows the Gaussian distribution. In addition, we present the variation of the length of the gas-liquid-gas interfaces (films) with the liquid fraction, as well as the distribution of the Plateau border sides. Furthermore, in response to shear, the stress level of the wet foam rises with the increase of contact angle. We find a linear relationship between the yield stress and the cosine of the contact angle.

Abstract:Hydrofluoroether C4F9OCH3, as a foaming agent in liquid CO2, is used to stabilize bubble in liquid CO2-based foam fracturing fluid which is waterless and no damage to oil-gas reservoir. However, characteristics of this environmental friendly CO2-based foam, such as the foam morphology and its flow behaviors in pipe, are insufficiently understood. Especially, foam quality, one of important characteristic parameters in a foam fluid, has significant effects on foam structure and flow behaviors of CO2-based foam. By means of the flow tests in pipes with different diameters, it was found that the CO2-based foam displayed wall slip phenomenon, and Oldroyd-Jastrzebski method was used to deal with this phenomenon. Effective viscosity of this CO2-based foam, as well as convective heat transfer coefficient initially increases and then decreases with the increase of foam quality. Due to dominant collision and friction among bubbles, their values reach the corresponding maximums when the foam quality is about 0.82. Meanwhile, the evolution of rheological parameters of CO2-based foam with the foam quality is shown as well, and the exponential relationship between yield stress and foam quality is illustrated. Additionally, as for the flow friction characteristics, it shows that fanning friction factor increases and drag reduction rate initially increases and then decreases as the foam quality is increased.

Abstract:A liquid foam is a dispersion of gas bubbles in a liquid matrix containing surface-active agents. Its flow involves the relative motion of bubbles, which switch neighbours during a so-called topological rearrangement of type 1 (T1). The dynamics of T1 events, as well as foam rheology, have been extensively studied, and experimental results point to the key role played by surfactants in these processes. However, the complex and multiscale nature of the system has so far impeded a complete understanding of the mechanisms involved. In this work, we investigate numerically the effect of surfactants on the rheological response of a 2D sheared bubble cluster. To do so, a level-set method previously employed for simulation of two-phase flow has been extended to include the effects of surfactants. The dynamical processes of the surfactants – diffusion in the liquid and along the interface, adsorption/desorption at the interface – and their coupling with the flow – surfactant advection and Laplace and Marangoni stresses at the interface – are all taken into account explicitly. Through a systematic study of the Biot, capillary and Péclet numbers that characterise the surfactant properties in the simulation, we find that the presence of surfactants can affect the liquid/gas hydrodynamic boundary condition (from a rigid-like situation to a mobile one), which modifies the nature of the flow in the volume from a purely extensional situation to a shear. Furthermore, the work done by surface tension (the 2D analogue of the work by pressure forces), resulting from surfactant and interface dynamics, can be interpreted as an effective dissipation, which reaches a maximum for a Péclet number of order unity. Our results, obtained at high liquid fraction, should provide a reference point, with which experiments and models of T1 dynamics and foam rheology can be compared.

The effect of plastic rearrangements on the flow of two-dimensional wet foam.

Abstract:The effect of the elementary plastic events on the flow behavior of the two-dimensional wet foam is investigated by quasistatic simulation on the bubble scale. The position where the plastic event occurs is traced by recording the coordinate at which two bubbles separate in the simulation. A localized shear band is found, and the width of this band increases with the increase of foam quality. From the displacement fields of these bubbles, it shows that the T1 plastic events can give rise to an increase in local bubble displacements due to the separation between these bubbles. The average relative pressure as well as normal stress difference of bubbles increases with the flow of foam in the initial elastic domain and then decreases as the elastic domain turns into the plastic domain. In the plastic domain, the plastic events rearrange the local structure of foam, which leads to decreasing both the average pressure and the normal stress difference. Additionally, the wall slip of foam is discussed in the simulation as well. The width of the localized shear band is narrower under the slip boundary condition. Meanwhile, the plastic events occurring between the first and second layers of bubbles change the pulling force of the films near the wall and cause an instantaneous increase in the slip velocity.

Abstract:The relationship between liquid-liquid interaction,solid-liquid interaction and surface tension,surface wettability is coupled with Shan-Chen pseudopotential lattice Boltzmann model, and the flow phenomena of carbon dioxide foam through porous media is simulated. The effects of Reynolds number(Re),capillary number(Ca) and surface wettability on viscous fingering is investigated. The simulation has demonstrated that the viscous fingering phenomena will be enhanced significantly with the increase of Re and Ca. While,no obvious viscous fingering can be observed when the surface is wetting to the displacing fluid. On the contrary,the viscous fingering phenomena is intensified when the surface is non-wetting to the displacing fluid. It's illustrated that the injection conditions should be set according to the fluids properties and wettability to ensure high displacement efficiency.

Abstract:HYPOTHESIS: Due to large surface/volume ratio, fluid flow resistance in nanopores is affected dramatically by surfactants adsorption, which dictates wettability and friction. Surfactants with different aggregated morphology and molecular alignment at solid/water interface are expected to affect friction and mobility of surfactant adsorption layer, both of which should be possible to contribute to surfactant drag reduction mechanism in nanopores. Simulations: Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were adopted to study the morphology of the adsorption layer of different types of surfactants on negatively charged hydrophilic silica surface and their effect on flow resistance in slit nanopores.FINDINGS: Flow resistance differs as surfactant adsorption morphologies vary. Adsorption layer composed of hemimicelles with "head on" orientation in low adsorption amount exhibits low flow resistance. As adsorption amount increases, adsorption layer evolves into the double layer in which less polar surfactant composition is found to be beneficial for improving hydrophobicity of pore wall and interfacial water diffusion. More ordered and tight intermolecular packing and high mobility of the adsorption layer are found to be propitious to reduce the flow friction.

Abstract:Thin-film equations are utilised in many different areas of fluid dynamics when there exists a direction in which the aspect ratio can be considered small. We consider thin free films with Marangoni effects in the extensional flow regime, where velocity gradients occur predominantly along the film. In practice, because of the local deposition of surfactants or input of energy, asymmetric distributions of surfactants or surface tension more generally, are possible. Such examples include the surface of bubbles and the rupture of thin films. In this study, we consider the asymmetric thin-film equations for extensional flow with Marangoni effects. Concentrating on the case of small Reynolds number , we study the deposition of insoluble surfactants on one side of a liquid sheet otherwise at rest and the resulting thinning and rupture of the sheet. The analogous problem with a uniformly thinning liquid sheet is also considered. In addition, the centreline deformation is discussed. In particular, we show analytically that if the surface tension isotherm is nonlinear (surface tension varies with surfactant concentration ), then accounting for top–bottom asymmetry leads to slower (faster) thinning and pinching if is convex (concave). The analytical progress reported in this paper allows us to discuss the production of satellite drops from rupture via Marangoni effects, which, if relevant to surface bubbles, would be an aerosol production mechanism that is distinct from jet drops and film drops.

Abstract:Thin liquid films are central to everyday life. They are ubiquitous in modern technology (pharmaceuticals, coatings), consumer products (foams, emulsions) and also serve vital biological functions (tear film of the eye, pulmonary surfactants in the lung). A common feature in all these examples is the presence of surface-active molecules at the air-liquid interface. Though they form only molecularly-thin layers, these surfactants produce complex surface stresses on the free surface, which have important consequences for the dynamics and stability of the underlying thin liquid film. Here we conduct simple thinning experiments to explore the fundamental mechanisms that allow the surfactant molecules to slow the gravity-driven drainage of the underlying film. We present a simple model that works for both soluble and insoluble surfactant systems. We show that surfactants with finite surface rheology influence bulk flow through viscoelastic interfacial stresses, while surfactants with inviscid surfaces achieve stability through opposing surface-tension induced Marangoni flows.

Turbulent bubbly channel flows: Effects of soluble surfactant and viscoelasticity

Abstract:Interface-resolved direct numerical simulations are performed to examine the combined effects of soluble surfactant and viscoelasticity on the structure of a bubbly turbulent channel flow. The incompressible flow equations are solved fully coupled with the FENE-P viscoelastic model and the equations governing interfacial and bulk surfactant concentrations. The latter coupling is achieved through a non-linear equation of state which relates the surface tension to the surfactant concentration at the interface. The two-fluid Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a front-tracking method, augmented with a very efficient FFT-based pressure projection method that allows for massively parallel simulations of turbulent flows. It is found that, for the surfactant-free case, bubbles move toward the wall due to inertial lift force, resulting in formation of wall layers and a significant decrease in the flow rate. Conversely, a high-enough concentration of surfactant changes the direction of lateral migration of bubbles, i.e., the contaminated bubbles move toward the core region and spread out across the channel. When viscoelasticity is considered, viscoelastic stresses counteract the Marangoni stresses, promoting formation of bubbly wall-layers and consequently strong decrease in the flow rate. The formation of bubble wall-layers for combined case depends on the interplay of the inertial and elastic, and Marangoni forces.

Effect of low pressure on the properties of short‐chain fluorocarbon surfactants and their application in aqueous film‐forming foam extinguishing agent

Abstract:Surface properties of three fluorocarbon surfactants with different carbon chain lengths were studied at low pressures of 94.6, 74.1 and 61.0 kPa, respectively. The results showed that the saturation adsorption capacity and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) decreased, while the average molecular area (AS) and the surface tension at CMC (γCMC) of fluorocarbon surfactants increased with decreasing pressure. The surface tension (γ) decreased with the decrease of pressure when the concentration of fluorocarbon surfactants was low. However, γ tended to be stable and increased with the drop of pressure when the concentration of surfactants was close or reach to CMC. In addition, the foaming and spreading performance of fluorocarbon surfactants decrease with the decrease of pressure, and the combination of fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon surfactants is beneficial to the improvement of performance (mixed systems: foam expansion E>6, 25% drainage time t25%>241 s, 1/2 defoaming time t1/2>851 s, spreading amount Vs>223 μL, spreading time ts<2 s). Further fire extinguishing experiment found that the influence of low pressure environment on fuel combustion characteristics is the key factor to determine fire extinguishing performance, while the influence of aqueous film‐forming foam (AFFF) performance is small. And AFFF based on the environmental‐friendly surfactant C4F9SO2NH(CH2)2N+(CH3)2CH2BrCH2OH (FC‐4) is an effective fire extinguishing agent under low pressure.

Abstract:Nanoparticles (NPs) have been used to enhance the performance of foam in foam flooding process, and their foaming properties have been extensively studied in recent years. The primary aim of this study was to reveal the structure of hydrophobic NPs stabilized foam system, and to understand the distribution of NPs on the liquid film's surface. To achieve this objective, cryo-transmission electron microscope (Cryo-TEM), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and optical microscope were used to accomplish the observation of both the entire foam system and one single bubble. Meanwhile, the distribution of NPs on the liquid film's surface was analyzed based on the observation results and existence theories. Secondly, the impact of the NPs' concentration on the foam ‘s properties (foaming capacity and foam stability) and the bubbles' sizes were investigated. Besides, the observation results revealed the two-dimensional structure and particle distribution of the NP stabilized foam, and a relationship between the structure and the performance was established based on the investigation on foam's properties. Based on the experimental results, the NPs and surfactants were conjectured to be located at intervals on the surface of the liquid film, meanwhile, the NPs shown significant positive effect on the foam's stability but weak impact on the foaming capacity.

Abstract:In this paper, the detailed behaviors of all the molecules, especially the interfacial array behaviors of surfactants and diffusion behaviors of gas molecules, in foam systems with different gases (N2, O2, and CO2) being used as foaming agents were investigated by combining molecular dynamics simulation and experimental approaches for the purpose of interpreting how the molecular behaviors effect the properties of the foam and find out the key factors which fundamentally determine the foam stability. Sodium dodecyl sulfate SDS was used as the foam stabilizer. The foam decay and the drainage process were determined by Foamscan. A texture analyzer (TA) was utilized to measure the stiffness and viscoelasticity of the foam films. The experimental results agreed very well with the simulation results by which how the different gas components affect the interfacial behaviors of surfactant molecules and thereby bring influence on foam properties was described.
