Abstract:Trace ethylene poses a significant challenge during the storage and transportation of agricultural products, causing over-ripening, reducing shelf life, and leading to food waste. Zeolite-supported silver adsorbents show promise for efficiently removing trace ethylene. Herein, hierarchical Ag/NZ5(X) adsorbents were prepared via different ammonia modifications, which featured enhanced ethylene adsorption ability. Ag/NZ5(2.5) exhibited the largest capacity and achieved near-complete removal at room temperature with prolonged efficacy. Characterization results indicated that the ammonia modification led to the formation of a hierarchical structure in the zeolite framework, reducing diffusion resistance and increasing the accessibility of the active sites. Additionally, desilication effects increased the defectiveness, generating a stronger metal-support interaction and resulting in a higher metal dispersion rate. These findings provide valuable insights into the development of efficient adsorbents for removing trace ethylene, thereby reducing food waste and extending the shelf life of agricultural products.
EFFECT OF LONG CHAIN CATIONIC SURFACTANT ON ZSM-5 SYNTHESIS AND METHANOL TO OLEFIN REACTION

Abstract:A method for ZSM-5 hydrothermal preparation by adding long chain cation surfactant was investigated.The prepared ZSM-5 was characterized by means of XRD,SEM,FT-IR and N2 adsorption.The catalytic activity of the prepared ZSM-5 was evaluated by methanol to olefin reaction(MTO).The results showed that after involving CTAB in the synthesis process,an unique morphology with typical hexagonal-shaped ZSM-5 crystal composed with much smaller particles was g enerated in prepared ZSM-5,in which presented much rougher external surface and smaller crystal size compared with regular ZSM-5 zeolite.Furthermore,the prepared ZSM-5 also had larger specific surface area and more Br nsted acid sites.Addition of CTAB could greatly enhance ZSM-5 stability,resist hydrogen transfer reaction and enhance ethylene and propylene selectivies when it was used as catalyst in MTO reaction.Selectivies of propylene and ethylene were raised by 21.39% and 4.52%,respectively,compared with regular ZSM-5 zeolite.

Abstract:Using a mineral acid, such as sulfuric acid, as a catalyst would cause serious environmental contamination. The use of such an acid requires subsequent distillation despite its efficiency to catalyze the absorption of ethylene oxide (EO) exhaust by water. This paper reports an energy-saving and environmentally friendly strategy to replace mineral acid with solid acid. Microporous silicon-aluminum zeolites, such as H-ZSM-5, HY, and H beta, were previously shown to be strong solid acid materials. In this study, we investigate the effect of the acidity of these materials on the catalytic absorption of EO exhaust. The H-ZSM-5 with strongest Bronsted acidity exhibited the best performance. Furthermore, the intrinsic reaction kinetics indicated that the reaction conducted with and without a catalyst follows a first-order irreversible reaction model in which the reaction rate and activation energy toward the consumption of EO was greatly changed (k rate constant improved by 0.145 g(-1) s(-1) and Ea activation energy decreased by 13 kJ/mol). Regulating Surface Acid-Basic Balance on Nazsm-5 by Fe3+ Solution Towards Enhanced Methanol Dehydration

Abstract:Mostly, adjusting and modifying the surface acidity on zeolite for methanol dehydration are realized by embedding other elements to modify H-ZSM-5, which allows to conduct the dehydration reaction at high temperatures, and with lower catalytic activity. In contrast, NaZSM-5 was modified by simple impregnation in Fe3+ solution to adjust its surface acidity-basicity in this work. The obtained composite was systematically characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, UV-vis, 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR, and N2 adsorption-desorption measures, respectively. The composite presented high efficiency for dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether at lower reaction temperature due to the uniform distribution of the active sites and acid-base balance on the surface, achieving > 90% conversion with ca. 100% selectivity at 180 oC. The acidic and basic sites as the active ones on the catalyst surface were measured by NH3- or CO2-TPD. The methanol adsorption behavior was explored by in situ IR technique, realizing the associative catalytic role of acidic-basic balance. Moreover, as it continuously runs over 500 h, the catalytic activity and selectivity hold constant without coke generation on the surface, indicating that the catalyst possessed super high stability.
Effective Adsorption Ag(I) Onto Triethylenetetramine-Modified Chitosan Beads: Adsorption Equilibrium, Kinetic, and Thermodynamic Studies

Abstract:The increasing heavy metal pollution caused by industrial wastewater has posed serious environmental concerns, and the removal of heavy metals such as silver becomes an urgent issue to be solved currently. In this research, novel functionalized chitosan beads were prepared by grafting of triethylenetetramine onto chitosan beads. Compared to unmodified chitosan, the triethylenetetramine-modified chitosan (CS-TA) exhibited both higher adsorption capacity and better selectivity for Ag(I) adsorption due to the introduction of amino/amine groups which has a high affinity for Ag(I). The influences of pH, sorbent dose, contact time Ag(I) concentration, and co-existed ions on Ag(I) adsorption were investigated. The adsorption kinetics could be fitted by pseudo-second-order model, whereas the adsorption isotherms could be described by the Langmuir model, indicating that chemisorption is the main mechanism for Ag(I) adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 419.8 mg/g at pH 5.0 and 298 K. The thermodynamic parameters suggest that the Ag(I) adsorption is endothermic and spontaneous. This work demonstrated that CS-TA exhibited superior performance for Ag(I) removal from aqueous solution due to its good hydrophilicity, high adsorption capacity, and fast kinetic rate, thus it could be potentially applied in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The activity of active oxygen species on supported Ag atoms can be effectively modulated by metal–support interactions using different oxide supports. The strong interaction between Ag and Al 2 O 3 with more electrons transferred from Ag to Al 2 O 3 leads to the formation of more Ag–O 2 − (superoxide) species, responsible for the selective oxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide. The relatively weak interaction between Ag and SiO 2 induces the generation of Ag–O (atomic oxygen) and Ag–O 2 2− (peroxide) species, which are more active for complete oxidation of CO and ethylene to CO 2 . This work is of significance for deep understanding of active surface species in atomically dispersed metal catalysts.

Bimetallic Ions Regulate Pore Size and Chemistry of Zeolites for Selective Adsorption of Ethylene from Ethane

Abstract:The petrochemical industry currently accomplishes olefin/paraffin separation by energy-intensive cryogenic distillation at an enormous scale. We report a sequential Ca2+/Ag+ ion-exchanged zeolite that achieves nearly ideal molecular sieving of C2H4/C2H6 and superior C2H4 adsorption capacity. Sequential and partial ion exchange regulates the pore size in ±0.2 Å increments, ranging between 3.8 and 4.2 Å. The demonstrated C2H4 adsorption capacity of 3.7 mmol/g, under ambient conditions, is the highest among zeolite-based materials. Elaborated with DFT calculations, Ag+-induced the stretching of the C-H bond and reduction of H-C-H bond angle of the C2H4 molecule in confined pore, providing C2H4 with the molecular basis and favorable kinetics for selective admission to pore size even less than 4 Å. The strategy of using bimetallic ions to regulate pore aperture size and selective admission of gas molecules with favorable kinetics provides a general path to be extended to other analogous molecular separation processes.
Tailoring the Electronic Metal‐Support Interactions in Supported Silver Catalysts through Al modification for Efficient Ethylene Epoxidation

Abstract:Metal-modified catalysts have attracted extraordinary research attention in heterogeneous catalysis due to their enhanced geometric and electronic structures and outstanding catalytic performances. Silver (Ag) possesses necessary active sites for ethylene epoxidation, but the catalyst activity is usually sacrificed to obtain high selectivity towards ethylene oxide (EO). Herein, we report that using Al can help in tailoring the unoccupied 3d state of Ag on the MnO2 support through strong electronic metal-support interactions (EMSIs), overcoming the activity-selectivity trade-off for ethylene epoxidation and resulting in a very high ethylene conversion rate (~100%) with 90% selectivity for EO under mild conditions (170 oC and atmospheric pressure). Structural characterization and theoretical calculations revealed that the EMSIs obtained by the Al modification tailor the unoccupied 3d state of Ag, modulating the adsorption of ethylene (C2H4) and oxygen (O2) and facilitating EO desorption, resulting in high C2H4 conversion. Meanwhile, the increased number of positively charge Ag+ lowers the energy barrier for C2H4(ads) oxidation to produce oxametallacycle (OMC), inducing the unexpectedly high EO selectivity. Such an extraordinary electronic promotion provides new promising pathways for designing advanced metal catalysts with high activity and selectivity in selective oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Zeolites have been widely used for heavy metal removal due to their high cation exchange capacity and surface sorption properties. However, the empirically determined adsorption capacity trend of Pb2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+ was not well understood. Herein, we discovered that the adsorption of Ni2+ by zeolites was greatly influenced by hierarchical pore geometry, while the adsorption of Pb2+ or Cu2+ was dependent on cation exchange determined by the framework composition. This difference in adsorption mechanisms is manifested through the systematic study of heavy metal adsorption using low-silica LTA and FAU zeolites with different mesopore architectures and compositions. Synthesizing mesoporous zeolite A of MLTA-P using proline mesoporogen considerably enhanced the Ni2+ adsorption capacity to more than twice of that of conventional zeolite A synthesized without organics, while the adsorption capacities for Cu2+ and Pb2+ were almost unaltered at similar to 170 and 510 mg/g. The study on the effect of zeolite synthesis time and adsorbate pH value revealed the significant influence of zeolite crystallinity, surface hydroxyl group, and hierarchical pore architecture on the Ni2+ uptake. The MLTA-P zeolite showed higher stability against pH variation in acid range and remarkably enhanced uptake in alkaline conditions, reaching 218 mg/g at a pH of 11. The full characterization of the adsorbent by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated the involvement of the surface reaction forming Ni phyllosilicate nanosheet species during the nickel metal removal process in which transport limitation played a crucial role. The uptake kinetics and isotherms could be perfectly reflected by a pseudo-secondorder rate equation and the Langmuir model, confirming the nature of chemisorption.

Abstract:Metal-incorporated zeolites as heterogeneous Lewis acid were applied in the ring-opening acidolysis of ethylene oxide with acrylic acid to prepare 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA). The catalysis characteristics, including Lewis acid strength and internal mass transfer resistance, were systematically investigated to facilitate the rational design of zeolite catalysts. Through modifying the Lewis acid strength of zeolites via different metals (Sn, Zr and Ti) incorporation and the internal mass transfer resistance of zeolites from the particle size, pore diameter or pore structure, it was found that the increased Lewis acidity can accelerate both the main and side reactions, resulting in the high activity but low selectivity of zeolite catalysts; the enhanced internal diffusion was the key to limiting subsequent cascade alcoholysis side reactions as well as the decline of catalytic performance. Based on these findings, Zr-containing zeolites featured with moderate Lewis acidity and uniform intracrystalline mesoporosity were designed and prepared, presenting excellent catalysis and recycling performance. These results demonstrated the great potential of the developed zeolite catalysts for the green synthesis of HEA as well as the similar ring-opening acidolysis of epoxides.
ZnO nanorod decorated by Au-Ag alloy with greatly increased activity for photocatalytic ethylene oxidation

Abstract:In recent years, the preservation of fruits and vegetables in cold storage has become an issue of increasing concern, ethylene plays a leading role among them. We found ZnO has the effect of degrading gaseous ethylene, however its effect is not particularly satisfactory. Therefore, we used simple photo-deposition procedure and low-temperature calcination method to synthesize Au, Ag, and AuAg alloy supported ZnO to improve the photocatalytic efficiency. Satisfactorily, after ZnO loaded with sole Au or Ag particles, the efficiency of ethylene degradation was 17.5 and 26.8 times than that of pure ZnO, showing a large increase in photocatalytic activity. However, the photocatalytic stability of Ag/ZnO was very poor, because Ag can be easily photooxidized to Ag<sub>2</sub>O. Surprisingly, when ZnO was successfully loaded with the AuAg alloy, not only the photocatalytic activity was further improved to 94.8 times than that of pure ZnO, but also the photocatalytic stability was very good after 10 times of cycles. Characterization results explained that the Au-Ag alloy NPs modified ZnO showed great visible-light absorption because of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect. Meanwhile, the higher photocurrent density showed the effective carrier separation ability in AuAg/ZnO. Therefore, the cooperative action of plasmonic AuAg bimetallic alloy NPs and efficient carrier separation capability result in the outstanding photoactivity of ethylene oxidation. At the same time, the formation of the alloy produced a new crystal structure different from Au and Ag, which overcomes the problem of poor stability of Ag/ZnO, and finally obtains AuAg/ZnO photocatalyst with high activity and high stability. This work proposes a new concept of using metal alloys to remove ethylene in actual production.Au-Ag alloy NPs were loaded on ZnO by photo-deposition procedure with high photocatalytic activity and stability, which can be ascribed to efficient visible light absorption by AuAg alloy NPs and synergistic effects of LSPR excitation.

Study of the Promoting Effects in Ethylene Epoxidation

Abstract:The promoting effects in the ethylene epoxidation reaction on an electrolytic silver surface by chemical modification with Ba and Cs compounds were studied. Ba increases the conversion of ethylene and decreases a little of the selectivity to ethylene oxide. In contrast, Cs increases the selectivity to EO at the expense of conversion of ethylene. Changes in the work function and the TPD of oxygen adsorption on modified Ag surfaces were measured. Promoting effects are explained by the idea that atomic oxygen is the crucial species for epoxidation.
Structural/surface characterization of transition metal element-doped H-ZSM-5 adsorbent for CH3SH removal: identification of active adsorption sites and deactivation mechanism

Abstract:CH3SH is a potential hazard to both chemical production and human health, so controlling its emissions is an urgent priority. In this work, a series of transition metal-loaded H-ZSM-5 adsorbents (Si/Al = 25) (Cu, Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, and Zn) were synthesized through the wet impregnation method and tested for CH3SH physicochemical adsorption at 60 °C. It was shown that the Cu-modified H-ZSM-5 adsorbent was much more active for CH3SH removal due to its abundant strong acid sites than other transition metal-modified H-ZSM-5 adsorbents. The detailed physicochemical properties of various modified H-ZSM-5 adsorbents were characterized by SEM, XRD, N2 physisorption, XPS, H2-TPR, and NH3-TPD. The effects of metal loading mass ratio, calcination temperature, and acid or alkali modification on the performance of the adsorbent were also investigated, and finally 20% Cu/ZSM-5 was found to have the best adsorption capacity after calcined at 350 °C. Additionally, the Cu/ZSM-5 adsorbent modified by sodium bicarbonate could expose more active components, which improved the adsorbent's stability. However, the consumption and reduction of the active component Cu2+ and the accumulation of sulfate during the adsorption process are the main reasons for the deactivation of the adsorbent. In addition, the simultaneous purging of N2 + O2 can effectively restore the adsorption capacity of the deactivated adsorbent and can be used as a potential strategy to regenerate the adsorbent.

Abstract:High performance and low cost HCHO oxidation catalysts are urgently required for indoor air purification. Herein, novel Ag-Fe/SBA-15 catalysts with dual active sites were prepared and exhibited excellent HCHO catalytic oxidation activity. The dual-site Ag-2Fe/SBA-15 catalyst greatly enhanced the HCHO oxidation conversion by 25 times (100 % vs 4 %) at 65 °C compared with Ag/SBA-15 sample. The incorporation of Fe into the framework of SBA-15 changed the surface properties by generation of Lewis acidic sites, which affected the HCHO adsorption and transformation processes. Meanwhile, the metallic Ag nanoparticles were more uniformly dispersed and the average particle size became smaller. The synergistic effects between Lewis acidic sites and Ag nanoparticles remarkably enhanced the HCHO oxidation activity. HCHO was more likely to adsorb on Lewis acidic sites, and then was converted to dioxymethylene (DOM) and formate species, successively, which was finally oxidized to CO2 by O2 activated on metallic Ag nanoparticles. The activation of HCHO and O2 took place separately on the surface medium Lewis acidic sites and metallic Ag nanoparticles. These results may open a new avenue for designing high efficiency catalysts for HCHO removal by the synergistic effects of acidic and metal sites.

Achieving controllable distribution of metal cations (Pd, Pt, Ni, Cr, Cu) in a zeolite either as [M(II)-OH]/1Al or M(II)/2Al provides novel mechanistic insights for adsorptive and catalytic reactions

Abstract:Utilizing H-BEA zeolites with similar Si/Al ratios but with different Al site distributions we show that the divalent metal cations (Ni, Pd, Pt, Cr, Cu) can be dispersed predominantly as either M(II)/2Al species (for conventional zeolite prepared in the hydroxide media) or as [M(II)-OH]/1Al species (for H-BEA prepared in HF). M(II) species are active in ethylene dimerization. However, Pd(II)-OH and Ni(II)-OH species, that were not previously prepared or evaluated for this reaction, are even more catalytically active. M(II)-OH species in zeolite can activate ethylene via formation of C2H4--M(II)-OC2H5 species which can eliminate butene restoring M(II)-OH species. We also reveal that Pt(II) and Pt(II)-OH in zeolite, not previously known to catalyze ethylene dimerization on solid materials, are in fact catalytically active. This synthetic realization further exemplifies the different NO adsorption aspects of these materials. Both Pd(II) and Pd(II)-OH are active for NO adsorption, the latter desorbing NO at higher temperature than isolated Pd(II). Notably, Pd(II)-OH is active for Wacker oxidation chemistry of ethylene into acetaldehyde, whereas Pd(II) is less active: this clarifies the missing mechanistic aspects of Wacker oxidation by homogeneous complexes. The presence of OH ligand in the Pd(II) first coordination sphere is important for reactivity. Further, we show that Cr/2Al in H-BEA is inactive for ethylene oligomerization, whereas Cr-OH has ethylene dimerization activity, illuminating a previously unknown possibility that Cr-OH species could be an active species for Cr/silica Phillips ethylene oligomerization catalysts.

Abstract:The adsorption removal performance of DMDS from MTBE solution with various zeolites under the room conditions was studied .The results showed only ZSM-5 exhibited an excellent performance to remove DMDS from MTBE selectively for the strong competitive adsorption of MTBE ,and yet other zeolites showed totally futile .The shape-selectivity should be responsible for the selective adsorption of ZSM-5 .Effect of modification by transition metals loaded on ZSM-5 was studied .Only the adsorbent with Ag+ loading showed a positively enhanced capacity of selective sulfur adsorption among all adsorbents studied .The sulfur capacity was increased from 13 .4 mg/g to 35 .4 mg/g adsorbent in the simulation MTBE solution after modification by Ag + .TGA-DSC analysis demonstrated the adsorption on the adsorbent occurred significantly via S -Mbonds .

Abstract:A unique zeolite catalyst, Fe doped ZSM-5 microsphere assembled by uniform nanorod-like crystals with hierarchical pore structure, was successfully synthesized and applied for the adsorption and degradation of trace chlorobenzene (CB) in the presence of H2O2. The organic ferric salts as the precursors, ethylene glycol as a chelating/reducing agent and the dynamic two-stage temperature-varied hydrothermal technique, together made the synthesized hierarchical Fe-ZSM-5 nanorods assembled microspheres (FZ-CA-5EG) to be characterized by abundant highly dispersed and valency-controlled framework Fe3+/2+ species. As a result of these features, the FZ-CA-5EG showed excellent ability of adsorption and degradation efficiency of CB, and enhanced durability due to negligible leaching of framework Fe species. Moreover, the hydroxyl radicals were determined as the main the reactive oxygen species of CB oxidation degradation, and a possible adsorption-oxidation degradation pathway was proposed.

Abstract:A solid can disperse spontaneously onto the surface of a support to form a monolayer or submonolayer, we call it solid/solid adsorption. Novel adsorbents can be made by using this phenomenon to modify the surface of supports with large surface area. When cuprous chloride is mixed with a zeolite and heated at suitable temperature, it can disperse to the internal and external surface of the zeolite. This point has been confirmed by XRD, EXAFS and NMR. Ethylene adsorbents with high capacity and selectivity can be obtained by heating CuCl with zeolites, because cuprous ions dispersed on the surface of the supports can form d-pi bonding with ethylene.
