Abstract:In the early- to mid-twentieth century, stories about nursing practice submitted by nurses frequently appeared in Public Health Nursing. The article reprinted here is an example of this genre of publications. Originally published in April 1936, this article tells the story of a day in the work of one public health nurse as she moves about the city making home visits. In this article, Snow (1936) used personification of the iconic black bag to tell her story. Using this technique she brings to life the nuances of her day, the personalities of her patients, and the importance of the black bag to the work of public health nurses. What did nurses learn from stories such as this one? Themes embedded in this story reflect the role of the Public Health Nurse (PHN), as well as the environment in which she worked. For instance, in this story we learn that not only was the PHN a welcomed visitor in the homes of families struggling with health problems, but that she brought order out of chaos, as illustrated in "The New Arrival". "The Black Bag" also highlights the humor nurses experienced in their encounters with families, as well as the pathos in other situations. Stories served as a vehicle for nurses to share and learn about both the common elements of their work, as well as the unique features related to location and environment, such as rural and urban locales.

Today, the organization’s 3,500 clinicians deliver home healthcare services ranging from pediatric to elder care, psychiatric assessments to AIDS treatment, and short-term interventions to long-term management. VNSNY clinicians visit patients throughout New York City’s five boroughs, Westchester County, and Nassau County on Long Island. VNSNY is the largest home healthcare organization in the United States; in a typical year, its clinicians make more than 2.2 million visits to more than 115,000 patients.

Abstract:As a newly appointed junior staff nurse in a city Accident & Emergency (A & E) department, the author took part in an orientation programme which included joining a paramedic crew for a 12-hour shift as a nurse observer. During this shift the crew and observer were involved in a major incident, when a coach carrying a party of pensioners overturned into a water-filled culvert, with a loss of 13 lives. This paper offers a personal reflection on the holistic application of multidisciplinary teamwork, so often rehearsed but, thankfully, rarely required. Over 1 year later these reflections may serve as a respectful reminder of the decreased, and through that, an appreciation of the arduous tasks faced by emergency workers both front-line and within the A & E department. Also discussed is the need for access and the opportunity for counselling if required, thereby possibly averting the development of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or at least recognising its early stages and beginning to work with it.

Abstract:One Sunday morning I could not get out of bed. I was not hungover. Over the next few hours, I sweated through the bedsheets and mattress protector in our friends' guest room. By early afternoon I had put myself in their shower and shame-facedly stripped the bed. The next day, I called in sick for the first time in 23 years. Abstract:The contribution of nurses to the morale of wounded and dying young men during World War 1 was immense. Alice Welford came from the small North Yorkshire village of Crathorne, joined the Queen Alexandra Imperial Military Nursing Service in 1915 and spent the following two and one half years in nursing casualties from some of the fiercest battles of the war including Gallipoli and Salonika. She kept an autograph book inscribed by wounded and dying soldiers, with poignant verses and humorous drawings showing love, wit and tragedy. Despite the dreadful conditions, kindness and compassion brought them comfort and raised their morale - a critical message for today, and Alice's gift to us from World War I.

Abstract:Practicing family medicine is really hard; the emotional toll of sharing patients' distress, vulnerability, and trauma can build up and become overwhelming. A family physician experienced such a moment during one particularly complex morning. Feeling nearly ready to walk out of patient care, she reached out to the team nurse, who helped her get through the moment and re-engage with the waiting patients. Sharing vulnerability in the moment, and later reflecting and deciding to write about it shows the power of prioritizing teamwork in practice.

Abstract:The Nurse-Family Partnership is a targeted parenting intervention designed to improve maternal and child health. In Canada it is delivered exclusively by public health nurses who provide complex care to adolescent girls and young women. A process evaluation was conducted to better understand the experiences of public health nurses delivering the Nurse-Family Partnership program in Canada. Although the traditional qualitative data analysis led to the creation of significant findings and clinical implications, it lacked the "heart" of public health nursing practice. Through a reflective process, and to present an evocative account of the multifaceted nursing care provided by the study participants, direct quotes were used to create a poetic display of nurses' experiences. Through the power of found poetry, the complexities of clients' lives, as well as the challenges and joys of home-visitation nursing, were illuminated.

Abstract:Background: The current nursing shortage coupled with increased nursing program enrollment and decreased clinical site availability has resulted in a need for innovation related to nursing student clinical experiences. Most clinical experiences are conducted during day-shift hours, resulting in challenges in scheduling as well as student-related nurse fatigue. Method: An alternate experience was designed to enhance student learning during an obstetric clinical rotation. Nursing students were assigned to one precepted night-shift experience in lieu of a previously scheduled day shift with their clinical group. Results: The precepted night shift enhanced the educational clinical experience for nursing students as reported in reflective assignments. In addition, increased staff nurse satisfaction was reported related to nursing student interaction. Conclusion: Integration of alternate clinical experiences such as night shift should be considered as increased nursing school enrollment and decreased availability of clinical sites become more prevalent. Utilizing an outdoor adventure program increased nurses' feelings of competence by boosting their confidence, facilitating an environment where leadership at the bedside became an ingrained part of their nursing practice. RN residents at a Midwestern medical center represented only 17% of the nursing population but reshaped the culture of the entire organization by becoming dynamic "everyday" leaders.
