Abstract:This document provides some technical notes on the polar field correction scheme for the HMI synoptic maps and daily updated synchronic frames. It is intended as a reference for the new data products and for some minor updates on our previous scheme for MDI (Sun et al. 2011).

Abstract:The radioactive transfer process in the surface-atmosphere-remote sensor can be simulated by the atmospheric radioactive transfer model MODTRAN 4, thus the top of the atmosphere (TOA) radiance with the corresponding atmospheric parameters can be acquired. Based on the look-up table (LUT) which is generated by simulation, the surface reflectance from CCD data of HJ-1 satellite can be retrieved. Then, the effect of atmospheric correction on CCD data of HJ-1 satellite is analyzed in terms of the spectral curves, comparison with MODIS surface reflectance products, and the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI). The results show: (1) Atmospheric correction on CCD data of HJ-1 satellite can eliminate the increase effect of the atmosphere. (2) The refl ectance of vegetation and settlement place from atmospheric corrected CCD data of HJ-1 satellite is well consistent with those from MODIS surface reflectance data products, with less than 20% in error between these two surface features for the four bands of CCD data of HJ-1 satellite. (3) The difference of NDVI between vegetation and other objects after atmospheric correction has been increased, which indicates the atmospheric correction can highlight the vegetation information.
Post-Installation Heliostat Field Aiming Strategy Optimization Based on Heliostat Flux Distribution Measurements

Abstract:Optical properties of the heliostats installed in central receiver power systems are sometimes different from the design specification to various extent, impacting mostly the reflecting surface curvatures and normal directions. For large area heliostats or heliostats close to the central receiver, such deviations may result in substantial degradation of heliostat field optical performance and cannot be corrected easily. This paper proposed an efficient and systematic approach to account for heliostat optical parameter deviations by post-installation heliostat flux distribution measurements and optical models to obtain effective focal length and orientation angles of each heliostats as an equivalent simulation model for more accurate description for the optical performance. The parameter identification is formulated as an optimization problem solved by genetic algorithm minimizing the difference of each flux value between the calculated flux distribution obtained by Solstice tool and the measured flux distribution analyzed by photographed spot image. The heliostat field aiming strategy is optimized based on those identified effective parameters. The experiment results showed the optimized aiming strategy based on identified parameters yeilded better performance than that with designed parameters.
Evaluation of the polarization radiance field of a sunglint model with different slope distributions using Directional Polarimetric Camera

Abstract:The inflight calibration accuracy and remote-sensing measurements over the ocean are greatly affected by the contribution of the sunglint on the ruffled ocean. The Cox–Munk model [1] was developed many years ago and has been used for in-orbit calibration of polarized channels of detectors such as POLDER [2]. However, the probability density function (PDF) for slopes was obtained by the use of the Gaussian distribution, and the Gram–Chalier sequence model has been used to describe the deviation of the actual sea surface from the ideal case. Tartaskii et al. found that the Gram–Chalier sequence decomposition of a PDF model may have “negative probability” in some cases, so it has failed to describe large deviations from the Gaussian PDF. Therefore, a combination of Gaussian functions with different weights was created [3]. In summary, the study of the probability distribution of sea surface wave slope has become a mature and broad research field, and how these probability distribution models affect the polarization field distribution of the sea surface needs to be analyzed and evaluated by inflight sensors [4,5]. Recently, the Directional Polarimetric Camera (DPC), which was the first operational POLDER-type instrument in China developed by the Optical Remote Sensing Center of AIOFM was successfully launched [6]. The reference top of atmosphere (TOA) bidirectional polarization distribution functions (BPDF) of land and sea surfaces can be provided by multi-angle polarization detection of DPC, so in this project, we used various PDF models to establish BPDF distributions of the sea surface with different environment parameters (wind, chlorophyll content, salinity, etc.). Then, the BPDF models have been coupled into the 6SV algorithm in order to calculate the TOA polarized reflectance of the sunglint area with the input of prior data of atmosphere(from ECMWF, MODIS, etc). Finally, the comparison studies with the measurements from DPC for several slope distributions have been carried out and the accuracy of DPC’s polarization radiance also been validated.
Relative Radiometric Correction of Polarization Imager with Large Field of View

Abstract:The relative radiation correction method for large field of view polarization imaging instrument was discussed. According to the inversion order of the physical quantity of the incident light restored by the detection signal, the relative radiation correction method of the large field polarization imaging instrument based on single pixel radiation response model is proposed. The detector correction, spatial stray light correction, polarization correction and optical system relative transmittance correction are carried out in turn. During the on orbit test, a fast validation method of multi angle observation data based on desert field reflectance method is designed to meet the detection requirements of large field of view polarization imager. The experimental data show that the difference of single point radiation response is less than 4% , and the relative radiometric correction method is reasonable and effective, which provides data basis for on orbit radiometric correction using large amount of statistical method. The method of relative radiometric correction and on orbit fast test provide effective reference for the follwing polarization imaging instruments with large field of view.

Abstract:Snow surfaces can be composed of ice crystals, melt-form snow or melt-freeze snow. Solar radiation scattered by such surfaces is polarized and the amount of polarization depends on the surface composition. This can be a source of measurement errors in satellite data if a non-polarimetric radiometric sensor is sensitive to the polarization state of light. To obtain highly accurate spectral solar radiation data from the Earth-atmosphere system for the space-borne inter-calibration studies as proposed in NASA's Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity Observatory (CLARREO) mission and the CLARREO Pathfinder (CPF) mission, the spectral polarization state of the reflected solar light at the top of atmosphere (TOA) must be known with sufficient accuracy. The degree of polarization (DOP) and the angle of linear polarization (AOLP) of the light at the TOA as functions of incident and viewing geometry and scene type construct the Polarization Distribution Models (PDMs) for correction of polarization-induced error of satellite data [31. In this work, algorithms for modeling the spectral polarization state of reflected sunlight from various types of snow, including particulate snow, melt-form snow, and melt-freeze snow crusts are developed. A particulate snow surface model based on a mixture of spherical and hexagonal-column particle shapes is used. A rough-surface ice/water facet model is introduced to approximate the melt-form snow and melt-freeze snow crusts. The area fraction of facets for typical (mostly particulate) snow, and for melt-form and melt-freeze snow crusts, is estimated by comparing the model results with the PARASOL satellite data and with ground measurements conducted in Hokkaido, Japan, and in the northwest Greenland ice sheet. Our numerical results demonstrate that the model can provide a reliable approach for making the spectral PDMs for wavelengths between 320 and 2300 nm for satellite inter-calibration applications as proposed in the CLARREO and the CLARREO CPF missions for all kinds of snow surfaces. Abstract:We describe the coordinate systems of two streams of HMI active region vector data. A distinction is made between (a) the 2D grid on which the field vector is measured (or sampled), and (b) the 3D coordinate established at each grid point, in which the field vector is presented. The HMI data reduction can involve coordinate changes on both, with those performed on the former termed "remapping", the latter "vector transformation". Relevant pipeline procedures are described. Useful examples are given for data analysis.

Abstract:Polarized scanning atmospheric corrector (PSAC) onboard the HuanjingJianzai-2 (HJ-2) A/B satellites is a cross-track scanning polarimetric remote sensor that measures the intensity and direction of light reflected by the Earth and its atmosphere by nine full polarized spectral bands from near-ultraviolet (near-UV) to shortwave infrared (SWIR). In particular, geolocation accuracy is an important factor for polarization observations. An automatic coastline inflection method (CIM) is implemented for PSAC geolocation error estimation. Over five months of globally middle or low latitude coastline area measurements are used to obtain statistical result. The results of the comparison with the Global Self-Consistent, Hierarchical, High-Resolution Geography (GSHHG) Database show that the PSAC geolocation error is smaller than 0.38 ground sample distance (GSD) or 3.25 km in 95% confidence level. In cross-track direction, the geolocation error estimation is affected by the instrument sampling characteristics, such as spatial response function (SRF). Thus, the correction method is proposed by establishing relationship between measurement radiance in CIM and offset proportion of PSAC GSD. The biases are obviously reduced after correction.

Abstract:Data preprocessing of the Polarized Scanning Atmospheric Corrector (PSAC) onboard HuanjingJianzai-2(HJ-2)A/B satellites is a key step for further applications. Based on the principles and characteristics of PSAC sensor, this paper elaborates on the methods and procedures of its data preprocessing including parameters quality supervision, data precorrection, calibration implementation and geolocation, etc. The results show that the data preprocessing from the original data to the L1 product is accurate and effective after preliminary analysis and evaluation, which can be used for subsequent atmospheric parameters retrieval and atmospheric correction applications.

Abstract:We developed a fast and accurate polynomial based atmospheric correction (POLYAC) algorithm for hyperspectral radiometric measurements, which parameterizes the atmospheric path radiances using aerosol properties retrieved from co-located multi-wavelength multi-angle polarimeter (MAP) measurements. This algorithm has been applied to co-located spectrometer for planetary exploration (SPEX) airborne and research scanning polarimeter (RSP) measurements, where SPEX airborne was used as a proxy of hyperspectral radiometers, and RSP as the MAP. The hyperspectral remote sensing reflectance obtained from POLYAC is accurate when compared to Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET), and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) ocean color products. POLYAC provides a robust alternative atmospheric correction algorithm for hyperspectral or multi-spectral radiometric measurements for scenes involving coastal oceans and/or absorbing aerosols, where traditional atmospheric correction algorithms are less reliable.
Polarization Calibration Using Solar Radiation Background Signal Scattered from Dense Cirrus Clouds in the Visible and Ultraviolet Wavelength Regime

Abstract:In this presentation we describe the application of a previously developed technique that is now being used to correct the daytime polarization calibration of the CALIPSO lidar. The technique leverages the fact that the solar radiation background signals from dense cirrus clouds are largely unpolarized due to the internal multiple reflections within the non-spherical ice particles and the multiple scattering that occurs among these particles. Therefore, the ratio of polarization components of the cirrus background signals provides a good estimate for the polarization gain ratio (PGR) of the lidar. However, in the visible and ultraviolet regime, the molecular contribution is too large to be ignored, and thus corrections must be applied to account for the highly polarizing characteristics of the molecular scattering. This presentation describes the theory and implementation of the molecular scattering correction.
Application of Polarized Light Compass System on Solar Position Calculation

Abstract:In order to satisfy the polarization navigation requirements for the solar position calculation, a new method based on improved polarization angle model by using a three-channel polarization imaging system is proposed. The system consists of three microminiature TFT-LCD optical cameras equipped with three fish-eye lenses, making the structure more compact and smaller. Compared with common method based on spot detection, the proposed method has the advantages of wide field of view and high precision. First of all, the simulation based on optimization algorithm is carried out under different initial values. Then the three-channel polarization imaging system is used to verify the improved polarization angle model in three kinds of weather conditions. The experiment showed that: (i) under clear weather, the solar altitude angle and azimuth errors of the solar position calculated at different times are 0.018° and 0.028°; (ii) in building shelter environment, the solar altitude angle and azimuth errors of the solar position are 0.167° and 0.1°; (iii) in tree shelter environment, the solar altitude angle and azimuth errors of the solar position are 0.921° and 0.25°. Compared with the traditional method, the precision is enhanced at maximum 60.87% by using the proposed method.

Abstract:The navigation technology of the near-earth space star sensors based on short-wave-infrared (SWIR, especially for JHKs bands) is a focused frontier research area. The research group has built an analytical model of daytime zenith radiance, which has a practical guiding value for optical system design, physical process simulation, and software integration development. However, it is not inadequate to consider only the spectral energy distribution of the sky background. In order to expand the approach of star identification, improve the contrast of target-to background, and enhance the sensitivity of star detection, it is necessary to consider the polarization pattern of the daytime sky. Therefore, a sky analytical model of the degree of polarization for JHKs bands is constructed based on the Rayleigh sky model, which comprehensively takes into account the depolarization effect caused by the reflection of the earth-surface, the anisotropy of the air molecules, and the Mie scattering of the aerosol particles. The model's fitting precision is evaluated based on the error between raw data and analytical values, and the model's validity is confirmed based on the deviation between measurement data and simulation data. The results indicate that the analytical model of daytime sky degree of polarization is constructed exactly and can provide a more robust reference for the star sensor's project demonstration, performance assessment, and optimization design based on SWIR technology.
Polarization Method for Atmospheric Scattering Correction of Remote Sensing Image

Abstract:Atmospheric scattering degrades the aerial remote sensing images. To improve the quality of the remote sensing image, a correction method of aerial remote sensing images using polarization information is presented. Atmospheric scattering light has distinct polarization characteristic, but the degree of polarization of vertical object radiance is very small. Object radiance is extracted from image information based on the different polarization characteristics between airlight and object radiance. The polarization images can be obtained by airborne multi-band Polarization CCD Camera. Experiment of image correction was carried out with polarized images in 443 nm, and the experimental result shows this method is very effective on correction of aerial remote sensing images.
Polarization Signature from the FengYun-3 Microwave Humidity Sounder

Abstract:Microwave Humidity Sounders (MHS) onboard NOAA-15, -16, -17, -18, -19, and EUMETSAT MetOp-A/B satellites provide radiance measurements at a single polarization state at any of five observed frequencies. The Microwave Humidity Sounder (MWHS) onboard the FengYun-3 (FY-3) satellite has a unique instrument design that provides dual polarization measurements at 150 GHz. In this study, the MWHS polarization signal was investigated using observed and modeled data. It is shown that the quasi-polarization brightness temperatures at 150 GHz display a scan angle dependent bias. Under calm ocean conditions, the polarization difference at 150 GHz becomes non-negligible when the scan angle varies from 10° to 45° and reaches a maximum when the scan angle is about 30°. Also, the polarization state is sensitive to surface parameters such as surface wind speed. Under clear-sky conditions, the differences between horizontal and vertical polarization states at 150 GHz increase with decreasing surface wind speed. Therefore, the polarization signals from the cross-track scanning microwave measurements at window channels contain useful information about surface parameters. In addition, the availability of dual polarization measurements allows a one-to-one conversion from antenna brightness temperature to sensor brightness temperature if a cross-polarization spill-over exists.
Correction of Skyglint above Water Surface Based on Polarized Principle

Abstract:The specular reflected light above water surface,including sun-glint and sky-glint,is one of the key factors that affect remote sensing of water color.This paper aims to correct the sun-glint and sky-glint effects in measurements of upward radiance from water surface based on the polarized principle and the multi-angle polarized remote sensing.A polarization filter was placed in front of the sensor of ASD field spectrometer to obtain the polarized characteristics of water surface spectrum in various conditions.By contrast with the spectral obtained under different incident geometry and polarized conditions,the experimental results show that the reflected light can be corrected completely with an incident zenith angle of 53 degree(Brewster's angle) and zero polarized angle.And most of the reflected light can be corrected with a random incident angle and zero polarized angle.In conclusion,the reflected light can be reduced obviously or even removed completely based on the polarized principle,which provide important value to improve the accuracy of water color remote sensing.

The Primary Study on Atmospheric Correction Based on Light's Polarized Characteristic

Abstract:The atmospheric impacting on optical remote sensing is an important factor causing the visional quality of remote sensing to descend. Scholars try to propose different atmospheric correction models, but these models are either extremely apt to cause great mistakes because of their own assumptions or impracticable because of too many parameters which are relatively difficult to get. After fully considering bidirectional reflection is the basic macroscopical phenomenon taking place on the surface object in nature and the polarized character of light, this paper proposes the new way and method of atmospheric correction depending on the polarized characteristic of light. The basic theory is that when the natural light irradiates to the interface with Brewster angle, the directions of the electric field vector in the reflected beam of light are completely vertical to the incidence interface. And after proving the feasibility of the theory, we propose some imaginations to actually apply this method. The result shows that the correction will not bring heavier burden to the computer and greatly facilitate the users to use the remote sensing images.

Abstract:A UV hyperspectral instrument was designed with a polarization measurement channel for real-time in-orbit polarization correction to reduce the influence of polarization on the detection accuracy of atmospheric radiation. One of the prerequisites for in-orbit polarization calibration is accurately calibrating the instrument's polarization properties in the laboratory. This study first introduces the calibration method and measuring device of the polarization characteristics of the ultraviolet (UV) hyperspectral detector and conducts a polarization calibration test of the instrument. The two main error sources introduced by the calibration device were emphatically analyzed, and the correction method of the error sources was deduced theoretically. Finally, the polarization calibration results of the UV hyperspectral detector were corrected, and the uncertainty analysis of the corrected calibration results was about 1.4%, which provides effective ground polarization calibration data for the on-orbit polarization correction of the instrument.

Abstract:Abstract. The Spaceborne Directional Polarimetric Camera (SDPC) is dedicated to obtain an accurate information of clouds and microphysical properties of aerosol particles via multi-angle, multi-spectral and multi-polarization observations. It images the Earth with 110° field of view (FOV) in 3 polarimetric spectral bands and 5 non-polarimetric spectral bands from visible to near infrared. Due to its wide FOV telecentric optical system and multi-channels, polarization sensitivity of optical components (PSOC) and non-uniform response of pixels (NURP) are the main uncertainty factors of polarimetric calibration.In this paper, a polarimetric calibration model of SDPC has been constructed for increasing the measurement accuracy. Combined an integrating sphere with a polarization generator as source, PSOC can be measured in high accuracy by using the Fourier series analysis method which reduces the impact form the alignment error of the generator. The sectional viewing field measurement method is used to acquire NURP while the large aperture integrating sphere served as reference source. Subsequently, the data of NURP have been corrected by the relative transmittance of high frequency and low frequency respectively for polarized channels. The result of validation experiment shows that the polarization measurement errors in 0°, 15°, 30°, and 45° half field of view (HFOV) are all less than 0.5% when the degree of linear polarization of reference source is larger than 0.1.

Abstract:Abstract Linearly polarized light has been used to view the solar corona for over 150 years. While the familiar Stokes representation for polarimetry is complete, it is best matched to a laboratory setting and therefore is not the most convenient representation either for coronal instrument design or for coronal data analysis. Over the last 100 years of development of coronagraphs and heliospheric imagers, various representations have been used for both direct measurement and analysis. These systems include famous representations such as the ( B , pB ) system, which is analogous to the Stokes system in solar observing coordinates, and also internal representations such as in-instrument Stokes parameters with fixed or variable “vertical” direction, and brightness values through a particular polarizing optic or set thereof. Many polarimetric instruments currently use a symmetric three-polarizer measurement and representation system (which we refer to as “( M, Z, P )”) to derive the ( B , pB ) or Stokes parameters. We present a symmetric derivation of ( B , pB ) and Stokes parameters from ( M , Z , P ), analyze the noise properties of ( M, Z, P ) in the context of instrument design, develop ( M, Z, P ) as a useful intermediate system for data analysis including background subtraction, and draw a helpful analogy between linear polarimetric systems and the large existing body of work on photometric colorimetry.
