Abstract:A novel red emitting coordination polymer (CP), [Cu(tpp)center dot H2O](2n) (1) [Htpp - 1-(4-tetrazol-5 "-yl) benzyl-3-( pyraziny-l) pyrazole], has been successfully constructed using a nitrogen heterocyclic ring ligand and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR) studies, elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). 1 is a rare 3D supramolecular assembly based on a 1D polymeric chain substructure of {Cu2N4} bridged by the Htpp ligand, which is propagated to form an extended 3D structure with the help of pi-pi stacking and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi hydrogen-bonded packing. Based on the phosphorescence of Cu(I)-CP, 1 is chosen as a probe for sensing different small molecules and metal ions. The luminescence properties of 1 well dispersed in different solvents have been investigated systematically, which demonstrates distinct solvent-dependent luminescence spectra with emission intensities that are significantly quenched by acetone (detection limit: 0.0842 vol%). Besides that, 1 with open Lewis basic nitrogen atoms on the chain surface was exploited for the binding and specific sensing of metal ions via Lewis base interactions, and shows high selectivity and sensitivity (K-sv = 4.6 X 10(4) L mol(-1)) for Fe3+ ions with luminescence quenching. Solid-state 1 displays excellent red lighting properties, which can be comparable with rare earth compounds. Subsequently, 1 blended poly(methyl methacrylate) PMMA film demonstrates comparable intensity with the solid state at concentrations of 1.5%, accompanied by an improvement of the luminescence lifetimes.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show the pre-eminence over other traditional fluorescent probes in the detection of water contaminants. Here, a novel lanthanide metal-organic framework Tb-MOF was successfully constructed by anchoring Tb3+ and 4,4'-(4-amino-1,2,4-triazol-3,5-diyl)dibenzoic acid (H2atdbc) which exhibited high chemical stability and water stability. Furthermore, sensing experiments showed that Tb-MOF could be used as a multifunctional probe to detect Fe3+ (LOD = 5.01 × 10-7 mol L-1, Ksv = 1.28 × 104 L mol-1), Cr2O7 2− (LOD = 2.92 × 10-6 mol L-1, Ksv = 8454.37 L mol-1) and acetylacetone (LOD = 5.59 × 10-4 mol L-1, Ksv = 12.32 L mol-1) separately. PXRD, ICP-MS, IR and UV–vis spectra were conducted to explore the detection mechanisms. The experiments showed that the detection mechanism for Fe3+ was energy transfer and ion exchange, and the detection mechanisms for Cr2O7 2− and acetylacetone were energy transfer.

Abstract:Developing metal-organic framework (MOF)-based fluorescent probes for efficient detection and discrimination of polluting ions in groundwater is vital for environmental protection and human health. In this paper, we prepared two luminescence-active transition MOFs, namely, Zn-MOF and Cd-MOF, and conducted sensing experiments. The results show that they both exhibit multiple-target detection for Fe3+, Pb2+ and Cr(vi) with high sensitivity, good anti-interference ability and good recyclability even with different frameworks. In addition, Eu3+-incorporated samples, Eu3+@MOFs, with dual-emission have been fabricated via efficient encapsulation of Eu3+ ions into the MOF host. As expected, Eu3+@MOF hybrids also act as multi-target and self-calibrated probes to selectively detect Fe3+ and Cr(vi) ions. However, the quenching efficiencies of the original MOFs towards Fe3+ are higher than those of Eu3+@MOFs. Thus, we could differentiate Fe3+, Pb2+ and Cr(vi) ions by comparing the changes of fluorescence emission between Eu3+@MOFs and the original MOFs. The recognition mechanism may be attributed to the competitive energy absorption between MOFs or Eu3+@MOFs and the analytes.

Abstract:In the present research, Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MIL-101(Fe)-NH2) nanoparticles were synthesized by simple solvothermal methods and used to assay Cr(Ⅵ). The MIL-101(Fe)-NH2 performs dual functions: the 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH2-BDC) ligand endows a strong fluorescence emission, and the Fe metal nodes are able to facilitate the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'- tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) directly, resulting in the generation of oxidized-TMB (ox-TMB). Our research results showed that reducing agents such as ascorbic acid (AA) can collapse the structures of MIL-101(Fe)-NH2 because of the reduction of Fe3+ by AA, resulting in release of NH2-BDC. In the presence of Cr(Ⅵ), the fluorescence intensity of the MIL-101(Fe)-NH2 + AA system will be decreased due to the competitive reduction of Fe3+ and Cr(Ⅵ). Nevertheless, Cr(Ⅵ) can significantly accelerate the oxidation of TMB by MIL-101(Fe)-NH2 as it boosts the electron transfer rate between Fe3+ and Fe2+. Therefore, a fluorescent/colorimetric dual-mode platform was developed for the detection of Cr(Ⅵ) with an extensive linear range (7.5-750 μg/L and 13.3-1000 μg/L) as well as a remarkably low detection limit (0.99 μg/L and 1.98 μg/L). This MOF with the ability to release ligands not only provides inspiration for the design of new luminescent materials, but also offers a novel and reliable solution for the detection of Cr(Ⅵ).

Abstract:The development of porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted significant interest in the scientific community in recent years because of their versatile applications particularly in optical and electronic fields. In this study, a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent turn-on sensor using a porphyrinic MOF, Tb-TCPP, is presented, which displays a 10-fold fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Al3+, Cr3+, and Fe3+ ions. The detection limit is in the nM region. For the Al3+ ion, it could be visually detected at concentrations as low as 5 mM within 15 min. Tb-TCPP could also be used as an indicator for acidic or alkaline solutions at pH values of >9 and <3. The studies on the detection mechanism illustrate that cation exchange proceed between Tb-TCPP and these M3+ ions, and consequently, energy transfer from TCPP to Tb3+ is suppressed and pi*-pi energy transfer of the porphyrin ligand is significantly enhanced.

Abstract:Fluorescence detecting both organic and inorganic analytes has aroused tremendous scientific interests, because fluorescence techniques have high sensitivity and are easy to operate. A new three-dimensional (3D) MOF {[(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ][Zn 3 (bbip)(BTDI) 1.5 (OH)]•DMF•MeOH•3H 2 O} n ( JXUST-13 , bbip = 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-1-yl)pyridine and H 4 BTDI = 5,5'-(benzo[ c ][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)diisophthalic acid) with new 4,4,8-connceted topology has been successfully synthesized and structurally characterized. Importantly, JXUST-13 could recognize H 2 PO 4 − and acetylacetone (Acac) by obvious fluorescence blue shift and slight enhancement with the detection limits of 2.70 μmol/L and 0.21 mmol/L, respectively. In addition, JXUST-13 exhibits relatively good thermal stability, chemical stabilities as well as reusability, and the analytes could be distinguished by naked eye and fluorescence test paper. Remarkably, JXUST-13 is the first dual-responsive MOF sensor based on fluorescence blue shift for the detection of H 2 PO 4 − and Acac with good selectivity in a handy, economic, and environmentally friendly manner.

Abstract:A new fluorescent chemosensor for Fe3+ was developed based on a rhodamine platform. L displayed highly selective and sensitive “OFF-ON” fluorescence response and naked-eye color change to Fe3+ in aqueous solution. The resulting L-Fe3+ complex was found to act as a selective“ ON-OFF” fluorescence probe for AcO- against common anions and cations with a Fe3+ displacement approach. The detection limits of L to Fe3+ and L-Fe3+ complex to AcO- were estimated to be 6.04×10-8 mol/L and 7.51×10-8 mol/L, respectively. The good biocompatibility of L enabled the investigation of fluorescent response for Fe3+ and AcO- in living Ana-1 cells by confocal microscope.

Abstract:A novel luminescent metal-organic framework (MOF) {[Co-3(phen)(2)(HL)(2)]center dot(H2O)(2)}(n)(1) (H4L = 3,3',5, 5'-azoxybenzenetetracarboxylic acid, phen = Phenanthroline) was successfully prepared under solvothermal conditions. Its structure has been identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. Additionally, the importance of the weak interactions to stabilize the structure of 1 has been discussed by Hirshfeld surfaces and the corresponding 2D fingerprint plots (FPs). Remarkably, 1 has high thermal stability up to 360 degrees C and excellent chemical stability in water with wide pH range of 2-11. Luminescence studies show 1 can recognize Fe3+ and Al3+ with high selectivity from mixed metal ions in aqueous solutions through the luminescence quenching and enhancement phenomenon, respectively. Furthermore, 1 can also detect PA with good selectivity and sensitivity among large common nitro-aromatic compounds (NACs).

Abstract:Two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, [Zn2(m-2mbix)(HEA)2·2H2O]n (1) and { [Ni(m-2mbix)(HEA)]·3H2O}n (2) (m-2mbix = 1,3-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, H2HEA = 1,2-phenylenediacetic acid), respectively, were successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Single crystal structures revealed that 1 and 2 were two-dimensional structure and two-dimensional (4,4)-topological layer structure, respectively. In addition, the complex 1 can function as a turn-off luminescent sensor to sensitively and selectively sensing Fe3+, CrO42− and Cr2O72− ions in aqueous media.

Abstract:An ESIPT based fluorescent sensor 1 was developed, which could selectively detect and differentiate trivalent metal ions Cr(3+), Al(3+) and Fe(3+) in aqueous medium. Abstract:In this contribution, Cd-MOF (1) complex with stable fluorescence properties was constructed by using 3dpu (N, N' -bis(3-pyridyl) urea) and H2IPA (isophtalic acid) as the organic ligands and Cd(NO3)2·4H2O as the metal nodes. The structure of the complex 1 was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, SEM and ICP-MS. The Cd-MOF with Cd cluster as the node, and 3dpu and IPA2− as linkers, exhibited excellent thermal and chemical stabilities. It was extended to the three-dimensional supramolecular framework by π - π stacking interaction and hydrogen bonding interaction. Importantly, complex 1 can be used as excellent fluorescent sensors toward Fe3+, Cr2O7 2−, and CRO (ceftriaxone sodium) with a low limit of detection and a high quenching constant, and have good anti-interference and recyclable characteristics. In addition, complex 1 has the advantages of high sensitivity and selectivity for detecting CRO in simulated human urine.

Abstract:A new phenanthroline derivative bearing imidazole group, (2-(3,5-di(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)-1-p-tolyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline) (1), has been devised. 1 can be used as a multifunctional probe exhibiting a highly sensitive colorimetric response to Fe2+ and a selectively ratiometric ﬂuorescent response to Zn2+ in a buffer-ethanol solution. The absorption enhancement accompanied by a visual color change from colorless to red upon addition of Fe2+, makes 1 a suitable naked-eye sensor for Fe2+. Moreover, 1 displayed a Zn2+-induced red-shift of emission (44 nm) showing a color change from blue to light cyan under a 365-nm UV lamp. Its practical imaging applicability for intracellular Zn2+ was confirmed in HeLa cells using a confocal microscope. The improved emission properties and cell imaging capability would provide a new approach for fluorescence sensation for Zn2+.
