Abstract:An amusing connection between Ford circles, Fibonacci numbers, and golden ratio is shown. Namely, certain tangency points of Ford circles are concyclic and involve Fibonacci numbers. They form four circles that cut the x-axis at points related to the golden ratio.

Abstract:Ford circles are parameterized by the rational numbers but are also the result of an iterative geometric procedure. We review this and introduce an apparently new parameterization by solutions of a certain quadratic Diophantine equation. We then generalize to Eisenstein and Gaussian rationals where the resulting "Ford spheres" are also the result of iterative geometric procedures and are also parameterized by solutions of certain quadratic Diophantine equations. We generalize still further to imaginary quadratic fields.
Spanning Forests and the Golden Ratio

Abstract:For a graph G, let f_{ij} be the number of spanning rooted forests in which vertex j belongs to a tree rooted at i. In this paper, we show that for a path, the f_{ij}'s can be expressed as the products of Fibonacci numbers; for a cycle, they are products of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. The {\em doubly stochastic graph matrix} is the matrix F=(f_{ij})/f, where f is the total number of spanning rooted forests of G and n is the number of vertices in G. F provides a proximity measure for graph vertices. By the matrix forest theorem, F^{-1}=I+L, where L is the Laplacian matrix of G. We show that for the paths and the so-called T-caterpillars, some diagonal entries of F (which provides a measure of the self-connectivity of vertices) converge to \phi^{-1} or to 1-\phi^{-1}, where \phi is the golden ratio, as the number of vertices goes to infinity. Thereby, in the asymptotic, the corresponding vertices can be metaphorically considered as "golden introverts" and "golden extroverts," respectively. This metaphor is reinforced by a Markov chain interpretation of the doubly stochastic graph matrix, according to which F equals the overall transition matrix of a random walk with a random number of steps on G.

Abstract:The golden cut divides a line so that the ratio between the long and the short leg equals the ration between the sum of the two legs and the long leg. Surprisingly, the value for this ratio can be approached by dividing increasing neighboring Fibonacci numbers, numbers where the next in row is the sum of the two previous figures. Here we show how Fibonacci numbers occur as you construct pentagons where the side length equals the diagonal in the previous pentagon, and how such pentagons can be used to prove that dividing increasing Fibonacci numbers oscillate around the golden ratio.

Abstract:The golden ratio and Fibonacci numbers are found to occur in various aspects of nature. We discuss the occurrence of this ratio in an interesting physical problem concerning center of masses in two dimensions. The result is shown to be independent of the particular shape of the object. The approach taken extends naturally to higher dimensions. This leads to ratios similar to the golden ratio and generalization of the Fibonacci sequence. The hierarchy of these ratios with dimension and the limit as the dimension tends to infinity is discussed using the physical problem.

Abstract:The Farey sequence is a natural exhaustion of the set of rational numbers between 0 and 1 by finite lists. Ford Circles are a natural family of mutually tangent circles associated to Farey fractions: they are an important object of study in the geometry of numbers and hyperbolic geometry. We define two sequences of polygons associated to these objects, the Euclidean and hyperbolic Farey-Ford polygons. We study the asymptotic behavior of these polygons by exploring various geometric properties such as (but not limited to) areas, length and slopes of sides, and angles between sides.

Abstract:We derive interesting arctangent identities involving the golden ratio, Fibonacci numbers and Lucas numbers. Binary BBP-type formulas for the arctangents of certain odd powers of the golden ratio are also derived, for the first time in the literature. Finally we derive golden-ratio-base BBP-type formulas for some mathematical constants, including $\pi$, $\log 2$, $\log\phi$ and $\sqrt 2\,\arctan\sqrt 2$. The $\phi-$nary BBP-type formulas derived here are considerably simpler than similar results contained in earlier literature.

Fibonacci--Theodorus Spiral and its properties

Abstract:Inspired by the ancient spiral constructed by the greek philosopher Theodorus which is based on concatenated right triangles, we have created a spiral. In this spiral, called \emph{Fibonacci--Theodorus}, the sides of the triangles have lengths corresponding to Fibonacci numbers. Towards the end of the paper, we present a generalized method applicable to second-order recurrence relations. Our exploration of the Fibonacci--Theodorus spiral aims to address a variety of questions, showcasing its unique properties and behaviors. For example, we study topics such as area, perimeter, and angles. Notably, we establish a relationship between the ratio of two consecutive areas and the golden ratio, a pattern that extends to angles sharing a common vertex. Furthermore, we present some asymptotic results. For instance, we demonstrate that the sum of the first $n$ areas comprising the spiral approaches a multiple of the sum of the initial $n$ Fibonacci numbers. Moreover, we provide a sequence of open problems related to all spiral worked in this paper. Finally, in his work Hahn, Hahn observed a potential connection between the golden ratio and the ratio of areas between spines of lengths $\sqrt{F_{n+1}}$ and $\sqrt{F_{n+2}-1}$ and the areas between spines of lengths $\sqrt{F_{n}}$ and $\sqrt{F_{n+1}-1}$ in the Theodorus spiral. However, no formal proof has been provided in his work. In this paper, we provide a proof for Hahn's conjecture.

Fibonacci Sumsets and the Gonality of Strip Graphs

Abstract:We provide a new perspective on the divisor theory of graphs, using additive combinatorics. As a test case for this perspective, we compute the gonality of certain families of outerplanar graphs, specifically the strip graphs. The Jacobians of such graphs are always cyclic of Fibonacci order. As a consequence, we obtain several results on the additive properties of Fibonacci numbers.

Abstract:We consider the well-known characterization of the Golden ratio as limit of the ratio of consecutive terms of the Fibonacci sequence, and we give an explanation of this property in the framework of the Difference Equations Theory. We show that the Golden ratio coincides with this limit not because it is the root with maximum modulus and multiplicity of the characteristic polynomial, but, from a more general point of view, because it is the root with maximum modulus and multiplicity of a restricted set of roots, which in this special case coincides with the two roots of the characteristic polynomial. This new perspective is the heart of the characterization of the limit of ratio of consecutive terms of all linear homogeneous recurrences with constant coefficients, without any assumption on the roots of the characteristic polynomial, which may be, in particular, also complex and not real.

Abstract:The Fibonacci sequence (FS) possesses exceptional mathematical properties that have captivated mathematicians, scientists, and artists across centuries. Its intriguing nature lies in its profound connection to the golden ratio, as well as its prevalence in the natural world, exhibited through phenomena such as spiral galaxies, plant seeds, the arrangement of petals, and branching structures. This report delves into the fundamental characteristics of the FS, explores its relationship with the golden ratio using Linear Time Invariant (LTI) systems, and investigates its diverse applications in various fields. Approaching the topic from the standpoint of a digital signal processing instructor in a grade course, we depict the FS as the consequential outcome of an LTI system when subjected to the unit impulse function. This LTI system can be regarded as the original source from which one of the most renowned formulas in mathematics emerges, and its parametric definition, along with the associated systems, is intricately tied to the golden ratio, symbolized by the irrational number Phi. This perspective naturally elucidates the well-established intricate relationship between the FS and Phi. Furthermore, building upon this perspective, we showcase other LTI systems that exhibit the same magnitude in the frequency domain. These systems are characterized by either an impulse response or a difference equation, resulting in a comparable or equivalent FS in terms of absolute value. By exploring these connections, we shed light on the remarkable similarities and variations that arise within the FS under different LTI systems.

Abstract:As a generalization of planar Fibonacci spirals that are based on the recurrence relation $F_n=F_{n-1}+F_{n-2}$, we draw assembled spirals stemming from analytic solutions of the recurrence relation $G_n=a\, G_{n-1}+b\, G_{n-2}+c\, d\,^n$, with positive real initial values $G_0$ and $G_1$ and coefficients $a$, $b$, $c$, and $d$. The principal coordinates given in closed-form correspond to finite sums of alternating even- or alternating odd-indexed terms $G_{n}$. For rectangular spirals made of straight line segments (a.k.a. spirangles), the even-indexed and the odd-indexed directional corner points asymptotically lie on mutually orthogonal oblique lines. We calculate the points of intersection and show them in the case of inwinding spirals to coincide with the point of convergence. In the case of outwinding spirals, an $n$-dependent quadruple of points of intersection may form. For arched spirals, interpolation between principal coordinates is performed by means of arcs of quarter-ellipses. A three-dimensional representation is exhibited, too. The continuation of the discrete sequence $\{G_n\}$ to the complex-valued function $G(t)$ with real argument $t$$\in$$R$, exhibiting spiral graphs and oscillating curves in the Gaussian plane, subsumes the values $G_n$ for $t$$\in$$N_0$ as the zeros. Besides, we provide a matrix representation of $G_n$ in terms of transformed Horadam numbers, retrieve the Shannon product difference identity as applied to $G_n$, and suggest a substitution method for finding a variety of other identities and summations related to $G_n$.

Abstract:It is conjectured that there is a converging sequence of some generalized Fibonacci ratios, given the difference between consecutive ratios, such as the Golden Ratio, $\varphi^1$, and the next golden ratio $\varphi^2$. Moreover, the graphic depiction of those ratios show some overlap with the quadratic family, and some numerical evidence suggest that everyone of those ratios in the finite set obtained, belong to at least one quadratic family, and finally a proof is presented that the converging sequence of some generalized Fibonacci ratios belong to at least one quadratic family.

Ford Spheres in the Clifford-Bianchi Setting

Abstract:We define Ford Spheres $\mathcal{P}$ in hyperbolic $n$-space associated to Clifford-Bianchi groups $PSL_2(O)$ for $O$ orders in rational Clifford algebras associated to positive definite, integral, primitive quadratic forms. For $\mathcal{H}^2$ and $\mathcal{H}^3$ these spheres correspond to the classical Ford circles and Ford spheres (these are non-maximal subsets of classical Apollonian packings). We prove the Ford spheres are integral, have disjoint interiors, and intersect tangentially when they do intersect. If we assume that $O$ is Clifford-Euclidean then $\mathcal{P}$ is also connected. We also give connections to Dirichlet's Theorem and Farey fractions. In a discussion section, we pose some questions related to existing packings in the literature.

Curious congruences for Fibonacci numbers

Abstract:In this paper we establish some sophisticated congruences involving central binomial coefficients and Fibonacci numbers. For example, we show that if $p\not=2,5$ is a prime then $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}F_{2k}\binom{2k}{k}=(-1)^{[p/5]}(1-(p/5)) (mod p^2)$$ and $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}F_{2k+1}\binom{2k}k=(-1)^{[p/5]}(p/5) (mod p^2).$$ We also obtain similar results for some other second-order recurrences and raise several conjectures.

Abstract:Let {F(n)} be the Fibonacci sequence defined by F0 = 0, F1 = 1, F(n) + 1 = F(n) + F(n-1) (n greater-than-or-equal-to 1). It is well known that F(p-)(5/p) = 0 (mod p) for any odd prime p, where (-) denotes the Legendre symbol. In 1960 D.D. Wall [13] asked whether p2/F(p-)(5/p) is always impossible; up to now this is still open. In this paper the sum [GRAPHICS] is expressed in terms of Fibonacci numbers. As applications we obtain a new formula for the Fibonacci quotient F(p-)(5/p)/p and a criterion for the relation p/F(p-1)/4 (if p = 1 (mod 4)), where p not-equal 5 is an odd prime. We also prove that the affirmative answer to Wall's question implies the first case of FLT (Fermat's last theorem); from this it follows that the first case of FLT holds for those exponents which are (odd) Fibonacci primes or Lucas primes.

Abstract:Generally Fibonacci series and Lucas series are the same, they converge to golden ratio. After I read Fibonacci series, I thought, is there or are there any series which converges to golden ratio. Because of that I explored the inter relations of Fibonacci series when I was intent on Fibonacci series in my difference parallelogram. In which, I found there is no degeneration on Fibonacci series. In my thought, Pascal triangle seemed like a lower triangular matrix, so I tried to find the inverse for that. In inverse form, there is no change against original form of Pascal elements matrix. One day I played with ring magnets, which forms hexagonal shapes. Number of rings which forms Hexagonal shape gives Hex series. In this paper, I give the general formula for generating various types of Fibonacci series and its non-degeneration, how Pascal elements maintain its identities and which shapes formed by hex numbers by difference and matrices.

Abstract:We have studied several generalizations of Fibonacci sequences as the sequences with arbitrary initial values, the addition of two and more Fibonacci subsequences and Fibonacci polynomials with arbitrary bases. For Fibonacci numbers with congruent indices we derived general formula in terms of generalized Fibonacci polynomials and Lucas numbers. By extending Binet formula to arbitrary real numbers we constructed Binet-Fibonacci curve in complex plane. For positive numbers the curve is oscillating with exponentially vanishing amplitude, while for negative numbers it becomes Binet Fibonacci spiral. Comparison with the nautilus curve shows quite similar behavior. Areas under the curve and curvature characteristics are calculated, as well as the asymptotic of relative characteristics. Asymptotically for n going to infinity the region become, infinitely wide with infinitesimally small height so that the area has finite value $A_{\infty}=\frac{2}{5 \pi} ln(\varphi)$.
