Abstract:The synthesis of 1-bromobutane is one of the most important basic organic experiments in universities.Some problems and defects of traditional procedure of this experiment were found and the reasons were discussed.Here the modification,which simplifies the procedure and improves the reaction efficiency are reported.

Abstract:Aromatic aldehydes are very important organic intermediates,which are widely used in pharmaceuticals,pesticides and other areas.In this paper,an improved synthetic method of aromatic aldehydes containing electrowithdrawing groups in ortho or para(or both) position of the aromatic ring was introduced.4-choloro-2-nitrotoluene,4-nitrotoluene and 4-cyanotoluene were used as raw materials,respectively,via enamination with N,N-dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal(DMFDMA) in the present of N,N-dimethylformamide(DMF) as solvent and under reflux,the corresponding styrylamine compounds were produced;then the intermediates were further oxidized by H2O2 under different reaction conditions.The effects of solvent species,reaction temperature and the used amount of H2O2 on the product yield were studied,and the optimal reaction conditions were determined.Under those optimal conditions,the best yields of different aldehydes are 75.6%(4-chloro-2-nitrobenzaldehyde),58.3%(4-nitrobenzaldehyde) and 68.2%(4-cyanobenzaldehyde),respectively with the advantages of simple process,low cost and being environment-friendly..The main intermediates and objective products were confirmed by HPLC and 1H-NMR.

An Improved Experiment on the Synthesis of 1-Bromobutane

Abstract:1-bromobutane was synthesized from n-butyl alcohol, (red) phosphorus and liquid bromine using sulphuric acid as catalyst. Various affecting factors were investigated. The results showed that the optimum conditions were n-butyl alcohol 0.2mo1, (red) phosphorus 0.053mol, distilled water 0.06 mol, liquid bromine 0.08mol and sulphuric acid 0.046 mol, refluxed for 2h, the separated yield was high up to 83%.

Abstract:The tubular reactor was adopted in the synthesis of m-bromophenol to solve the feed-back problem and depress the side reactions in the traditional batch reactor.m-bromophenol was prepared by diazotization with m-bromoaniline,sulfuric acid and sodium nitrite as raw materials and hydrolysis.With the replacement of the traditional batch reactor by the tubular one,the side reactions of the conjunction of the target product with the unconverted intermediate diazotium are depressed effectively.Thus,the selectivity of the hydrolysis is enhanced.The hydrolysis product was extracted with toluene and then distilled under vacuum.The purity and chemical structure of the result product were identified by gas chromatography and IR,respectively.The yield of the product reached 91% while more than 99% of the purity.The effect of the dropping pace in the tubular reactor on the yield was mainly studied,and the result suggested that the yield reached a highest point at a dropping pace of 8 mL/min and the hydrolysis solution could be reused for 7 times.
Synthesis of 1-Bromobutane by Improved Potassium Bromide-Concentrated Sulfuric Acid Method

Abstract:1-Bromobutane was synthesized from potassium bromide and n-butyl alcohol by superadding concentrated sulfuric acid in water.Various affecting factors were investigated.The optimal conditions were n-butyl alcohol 0.16mol,potassium bromide 0.18ml,initial amount of concentrated sulfuric acid 4mL,additional amount 12mL,refluxed for 5h,and the separated yield was up to 88.4%.After the waste liquid was disposed using calcium oxide,calcium sulfate and potassium sulfate were got.Raw product was analyzed by GC,and no by-product was detected.Pure product was characterized by index of refraction and IR.

Abstract:2,2-Diethoxypropane was prepared by acetone and anhydrous alcohol under triethyl orthoformate as dehydration agent and ammonium chloride as catalyst. Effects of reaction condition on the condensation were investigated, according to the method of single factor test. The preferably condition was that acetone 26 g (0.45 mol), triethyl orthoformate 74 g (0.50 mol), alcohol 75 mL and ammonium chloride 0.72 g were reacted under reflux for 3 h. The yield was 77.5%.

Abstract:One-pot synthesis of 6-bromo-4,4-dimethylthiochroman from bromobenzene is reported. The crucial connection between the three steps is that the byproducts in the first two steps are used as the catalyst in the third step. Compared with the previous route, this approach is of low consumption and low pollution.

Abstract:Trifluoronitrobenzene was hydrolyzed in alkali solution to the corresponding potassium phenolate(Ⅰ) .In the presence of potassium iodide,treatment of Ⅰ with monochloroacetone gave 2 acetonyloxy 3,4 difluoronitrobenzene(Ⅱ).At molar ratio of 2,3,4 tyifluoronitrobenzene:monochloroacetone: potassium iodide=1 00∶1 25∶0 06 and temperature of 55 ℃,the yield of Ⅱwas 70 2% and the purity was 97 5%.The drawback of the old method to use hydrochloric acid and potassium carbonate was avoided .This improved method is suitable for industrial production for its low cost .

Abstract:A new route for the synthesis of 6-bromo-4,4-dimethylthiochroman was proposed and the optimized conditions for each step were obtained.Bromobenzene was selected as starting material and 6-bromo-4,4-dimethylthiochroman was prepared via chlorosulfonation,reduction,thioetherification and cyclization with the yield of 88.5%.Except the reduction,which had to be performed at a higher temperature,the other three steps proceeded at temperatures lower than 50oC.Thus both the energy cost and byproducts were decreased.Compared to previous routes,the proposed one in this work is advanced for its lower cost and less contamination,so it is suitable to be industrially amplified.

Abstract:Using ethyl acetoacetate as substrate, 4, 4-dibenzyl-3-Butene-2-one was successfully obtained with selective protection and deprotection on ketone carbonyl group.The experiment procedures include anhydrous and anaerobic operation, reduced pressure distillation, flash column chromatography, etc.As a well-established synthetic route, the product was easily purified and the yield was high.In combination with the spectroscopy analysis, this experiment improved students' experimental ability of organic synthesis, and deepened their understanding and application of the theoretical knowledge of spectroscopy.Therefore, agood teaching effect was achieved.
An Experimental Modification to the Preparation of di-n-butyl ether from 1-butanol for the Undergraduate Teaching Course of Organic Laboratory

Abstract:To explore a greener and safer experimental preparation method for di-n-butyl ether, a modification to the preparation of di-n-butyl ether from 1-butanol was used in this study by replacing the traditional concentrated sulfuric acid as the catalyst with p-toluenesulfonic acid under the guidance of computational calculations. The effects of reaction temperature, catalyst quantity, and other parameters on the reaction were investigated. The catalyst's recovery and reuse were explored. The results reveal that p-toluenesulfonic acid has a catalytic efficiency comparable to that of concentrated sulfuric acid in this experiment, that it is safer and easier to operate, and that it can be recovered and reused using simple procedures, which meets the requirements of green chemistry. The findings of this study may be utilized to enhance the di-n-butyl ether preparation experiment, which can be used in the Organic Chemistry Laboratory course at colleges.

Abstract:The process of preparing 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylacetonitrile,as one of the important intermediates for synthesis was studied.Beginning from the raw material—vanillin,the title compound was prepared,via protection of hydroxyl,reduction,chloridization and nitrilation.The influences of various reaction conditions on the yield were investigated,and the optimal reaction conditions(reagent,temperature,time and yield) were as follows:acetic anhydride as acetylation reagent,reacting at room temperature for 3 h and yield was 99%;Raney Ni as catalyst,reaction time was 8 h at room temperature,and yield was 96.8%;dropping thionyldichloride at 0℃,then reacting at room temperature for 2 h,and the yield was 78%;refluxing with sodium cyanide for 9 h,and the yield was 78.5%.The products were characterized with MS,1H NMR and elemental analysis.The results showed that the process proposed overcame the defects of traditional synthesis route.

Abstract:The α-bromination reaction of carbonyl compounds is a significant topic in the field of organic chemistry. However, due to the lack of suitable brominating reagents, the application of this reaction in undergraduate organic chemistry experiments is limited. In this study, three junior undergraduates successfully conducted an innovative experiment under the guidance of teachers. The bromination of various acetophenone derivatives was investigated by employing pyridine hydrobromide perbromide as the brominating agent, with a focus on exploring the effects of reaction time, reaction temperature, and dosage of the brominating agent. The results demonstrated that 4-chloro-α-bromo-acetophenone could be synthesized at 90 °C using 4-chloroacetophenone as a substrate and acetic acid as a solvent with a molar ratio of substrate to brominator being 1.0:1.1. Through the experimental teaching of 18 junior undergraduates, it was observed that all the students successfully completed the experiment within a time frame of 4–5 h, with a notable achievement yield exceeding 80% observed in 14 students. This innovative experiment exhibits significant advantages in terms of safety, high yield, cost-effectiveness, and repeatability. Furthermore, while reinforcing fundamental skills in chemistry experimentation among students, it enhances their scientific literacy levels and fosters innovation consciousness as well as practical aptitude. Consequently, this approach is highly suitable for widespread implementation and integration into undergraduate experimental pedagogy.

Abstract:(E)-4-bromo-3-methyl-2-butenoic acid was conveniently synthesized from 3-methyl-2-butenoic acid in 29% overall yield.In this procedure,the title compound was easily obtained by hydrolysis of (E)-trimethylsilyl 4-bromo-3-methyl-2-butenoate,which could be isolated from its mixture of Z-/E-isomer by distillation in vacuo.The isomeric mixture was prepared via the esterification of 3-methyl-2-butenoic acid with chlorotrimethylsilane,followed by bromination with NBS.

Abstract:Some synthetic methods of 1-bromo-3,4,5-trimethoxybenzene BTMOB are compared. One can obtain good yield by Sandmeyer reaction after 3,4,5-trimethoxyaniline is diazotized. The optimum reaction conditions are determined: n (ArNH2):n(NaNO2):n(NaBr) = 1.0:1.2:1.5, temperature of diazotization below 5°C and the complex of diazonium salt refluxed for 1 h during decomposition. Yield of BTMOB is about 87.5%.

Abstract:NBS/H2SO4-HOAc as brominating reagent directly brominates some strong deactivated aromatics such as 1,3-bis(trifuoromethyl)benzene with good results.The effects of reaction conditions,such as the ratio of sulfuric acid and acetic acid,reaction temperature,addition time and the ratio of NBS and raw material,were investigated and the optimal reaction condition were determined.The excellent yield 93.1% was obtained when 1,3-bis(trifuoromethyl)benzene reacted with 1.15 equivalent NBS in H2SO4/HOAc 6∶1 at 45 ℃ for 8 h.

Abstract:The preparation of ethyl acetoacetate is a distinctive, century-old classic organic chemistry laboratory project. Ethyl acetate and sodium metal (sodium ethoxide) are reacted by Claisen ester condensation to produce the sodium salt of ethyl acetoacetate and then obtain the refined product by acidification as well as washing, drying, and distillation under reduced pressure. This article analyzed the reasons for the low product yield and poor purity of the traditional experimental method and found that ethanol was the key to the final product. The improved experimental method used rotary evaporation and washing with saturated calcium chloride solution to remove ethanol. The new experimental method not only retains the characteristics of the original experiment and improves the product yield, but also adds the interesting phenomenon of pointing water into “ice”, which cultivates students’ learning interest and innovation and achieves a good teaching effect.
