Abstract:Afforestation currently makes a great contribution to carbon uptake in terrestrial ecosystems, while dramatically affects soil ecosystem functions too. Little is known, however, about the changes in soil fungal functional groups and their interactions following afforestation. Here, based on high-throughput sequencing and FUNGuild annotation, we investigated the functional characteristics of soil fungi as well as environmental factors in a watershed where paddy field and dry farmland were changed to eucalyptus plantation. The results showed that afforestation on paddy field resulted in greater changes in diversity, community structure and taxon interactions of fungal functional groups than afforestation on dry farmland. The most complex and distinctive community structure was found in eucalyptus plantation, as well as the greatest taxon interactions, and the lowest alpha-diversity of functional guilds of symbiotrophic fungi because of the dominant ectomycorrhizal fungi. Paddy field exhibited the highest proportion of saprotrophic fungi, but the lowest taxonomic diversity of saprotrophic and pathotrophic fungi. The taxonomic diversity of undefined saprotrophic fungi shaped the differences in community structure and network complexity between eucalyptus plantation and cropland. Limited cooperation within dominant fungi was the main reason for the establishment of a loose co-occurrence network in paddy field. From croplands to artificial forests, reduced soil pH boosted the taxonomic diversity of fungal functional groups. All of these findings suggested that afforestation may lead to an increase in the taxonomic diversity of soil fungal functional groups, which would further intensify the taxon interactions.

Abstract:Afforestation has a substantial influence on soil fungal communities by introducing ecological variations within forest ecosystems via the inclusion of distinct tree species (coniferous and broadleaf) and afforestation patterns (pure forests and mixed forests). However, the specific effects of these variations on soil fungal communities require further investigation. Soil samples from birch (B: Betula platyphylla Suk.), larch (L: Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Kuzen.), and mixed birch and larch (B–L) forests were used in this study, and a shrub–grassland field (S–G) was used as a reference. The abundance, diversity, and community composition of fungi in the soil of the monoculture forest (B and L), mixed forest (B–L), and S–G were studied by high‐throughput sequencing. The results showed that Basidiomycota was the dominant fungus in B and B–L, and the dominant genera were Inocybe and Amanita, respectively. Ascomycota was the dominant fungus in L and S–G, and the dominant genus was Mortierella. Afforestation reduced the richness and diversity of soil fungi. Larch forests were richer in soil fungi than B and B–L forests. Soil organic carbon was the main soil factor affecting the soil fungal community structure. Soil fungal community network changed less after planting L than after planting B and B–L, and the soil fungal community structure was more complex and stable in L than in B and B–L. For soil fungal community composition and function, mixed forests did not show outstanding advantages. Planting monoculture forests may be a more effective afforestation strategy in the rocky mountain areas of North China.

Abstract:The soil microbial community structure is critical to the cycling of carbon and nitrogen in forest soils. As afforestation practices increasingly promote different functional traits of tree species, it has become critical to understand how they influence soil microbial community structures, which directly influence soil biogeochemical processes. We used fungi ITS and bacteria 16S rDNA to investigate soil microbial community structures in three monoculture plantations consisting of a non-native evergreen conifer (Pinus sibirica), a native deciduous conifer (Larix gmelinii), and a native deciduous angiosperm (Betula platyphylla) and compared them with two 1:1 mixed-species plantations (P. sibirica and L. gmelinii, P. sibirica and B. platyphylla). The fungal community structure of the conifer–angiosperm mixed plantation was similar to that of the non-native evergreen conifer, and the bacterial community structure was similar to that of the angiosperm monoculture plantation. Fungal communities were strongly related to tree species, but bacterial communities were strongly related to soil nitrogen. The co-occurrence networks were more robust in the mixed plantations, and the microbial structures associated with soil carbon and nitrogen were significantly increased. Our results provide a comparative study of the soil microbial ecology in response to afforestation of species with different functional traits and enhance the understanding of factors controlling the soil microbial community structure.

Abstract:Afforestation exerts a profound impact on soil fungal communities, with the nature and extent of these changes significantly influenced by the specific tree species selected. While extensive research has addressed the aboveground ecological outcomes of afforestation, the nuanced interactions between tree species and soil fungal dynamics remain underexplored. This study investigated the effects of afforestation with Caragana microphylla (CMI), Populus simonii (PSI), and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica (PSY) on soil fungal diversity, functional guilds, and co-occurrence networks, drawing comparisons with neighboring grasslands. Our findings reveal a significant increase in soil fungal Chao1 richness following afforestation, though the degree of enhancement varied across tree species. Specifically, CMI and PSI forests showed notable increases in fungal richness, whereas the response in PSY forests was comparatively modest. Saprotrophic fungal groups, integral to organic matter decomposition, showed a substantial increase across all afforested sites, with CMI forests exhibiting an impressive 205.58% rise. Conversely, pathogenic fungi, which can negatively impact plant health, demonstrated a marked decrease within plantation forests. Symbiotic groups, particularly ectomycorrhizal fungi, were notably enriched solely in PSI forests. Co-occurrence network analysis further indicated that afforestation alters fungal network complexity: CMI forests displayed increased network interactions, while PSI and PSY forests exhibited a reduction in network connectivity. Soil bulk density and organic carbon content emerged as key factors influencing network complexity, whereas tree species identity played a crucial role in shaping soil fungal community composition. Collectively, these results emphasize the importance of adopting a species-specific strategy for afforestation to optimize soil fungal diversity and network structure, ultimately enhancing the ecological resilience and sustainability of forest plantation ecosystems.

Abstract:Afforestation plays a pivotal role in ecosystem restoration, exemplified by the Saihanba Mechanized Forest Farm, the world’s largest planted forest; however, the assembly mechanisms and interactions of soil microbial communities in such forests remain inadequately understood. This study aimed to elucidate the impact of different afforestation tree species, namely Larix gmelinii var. principis-rupprechtii, Picea asperata, and Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica, on soil bacterial diversity and community structure in comparison to grassland. Sixty soil samples were collected at a 20 cm depth, and high-throughput sequencing was employed to identify bacterial communities and assess their interactions with environmental factors. A total of 6528 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified, with Solirubrobacter, Conexibacter, Bacillus, Massilia, Gaiella, Acidibacter, and Vicinamibacter being the dominant genera. Afforestation significantly impacted soil bacterial alpha diversity, with notable influence from key soil chemical properties, including available phosphorus (AP), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of soil organic matter (SOM-C/N). The Mantel test highlighted pH, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and spatial variable (dbMEM) as primary environmental factors influencing dominant bacterial genera. The bacterial community structure demonstrated deterministic homogeneous selection, wherein SOM-C/N emerged as a significant factor influencing the dissimilarity of soil bacterial communities. Furthermore, plantation soils exhibited a more complex network structure than grassland soil, highlighting the crucial role of bacterial communities in vegetation changes and providing valuable insights into their response to environmental factors during the reforestation process.

Abstract:Although the afforestation of former arable lands is a common global land-use conversion, its impact on soil microbial communities at the aggregate scale has not been adequately addressed. In this study, soil samples were categorized into large macroaggregates (LM, >2 mm), small macroaggregates (SM, 2–0.25 mm), and microaggregates (MI, <0.25 mm) to assess the changes in microbial composition, diversity, network complexity, and network stability within soil aggregates after the afforestation of a former dryland in northwestern China. The results revealed that afforestation enhanced the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota, Chloroflexi, Ascomycota, and Mortierellomycota within the soil aggregates, suggesting that these phyla may have greater advantages in microbial communities post-afforestation. The Shannon–Wiener and Pielou indices for bacterial communities showed no significant differences between land-use types across all aggregate fractions. However, the alpha diversity of fungal communities within the LM and SM significantly increased after afforestation. Bray–Curtis dissimilarity indices showed that afforestation altered bacterial beta diversity within the LM and MI but had a minimal impact on fungal beta diversity across all three aggregate fractions. The topological features of cross-kingdom microbial co-occurrence networks within the soil aggregates generally exhibited a decreasing trend post-afforestation, indicating a simplification of microbial community structure. The reduced robustness of microbial networks within the LM and SM fractions implies that afforestation also destabilized the structure of microbial communities within the macroaggregates. The composition of the soil microbial communities correlated closely with soil carbon and nitrogen contents, especially within the two macroaggregate fractions. The linkages suggests that improved resource conditions could be a key driver behind the shifts in microbial communities within soil aggregates following afforestation. Our findings indicate that the impact of afforestation on soil microbial ecology can be better understood by soil aggregate fractionation.

Abstract:Grassland afforestation dramatically affects the abiotic, biotic, and ecological function properties of the original ecosystems. Interference from afforestation might disrupt the stasis of soil physicochemical properties and the dynamic balance of microbiota. Some studies have suggested low sensitivity of soil properties and bacterial community to afforestation, but the apparent lack of a significant relationship is probably due to the confounding effects of the generalist habitat and rare bacterial communities. In this study, soil chemical and prokaryotic properties in a 30-year-old Mongolia pine ( Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica Litv.) afforested region and adjacent grassland in Inner Mongolia were classified and quantified. Our results indicate that the high richness of rare microbes accounts for the alpha-diversity of the soil microbiome. Few OTUs of generalist (core bacteria) and habitat-specialist bacteria are present. However, the high abundance of this small number of OTUs governs the beta-diversity of the grassland and afforested land bacterial communities. Afforestation has changed the soil chemical properties, thus indirectly affecting the soil bacterial composition rather than richness. The contents of soil P, Ca 2+ , and Fe 3+ account for differentially abundant OTUs such as Planctomycetes and subsequent changes in the ecologically functional potential of soil bacterial communities due to grassland afforestation. We conclude that grassland afforestation has changed the chemical properties and composition of the soil and ecological functions of the soil bacterial community and that these effects of afforestation on the microbiome have been modulated by changes in soil chemical properties.

Abstract:Afforestation has an important role in biodiversity conservation and ecosystem function improvement. A meta-analysis was carried out in China, which has the largest plantation area globally, to quantify the effects of plantings on soil microbial diversity. The results showed that the overall effect of afforestation on soil microbial diversity was positive across the country. Random forest algorithm suggested that soil carbon was the most important factor regulating microbial diversity and the positive response was only found with new plantings on low-carbon bare lands but not on high-carbon farmlands and grasslands. In addition, afforestation with broadleaved species increased microbial diversity, whereas planting with conifers had no effect on microbial diversity. This study clarified the effects of plantings on soil microbial diversity, which has an important implication for establishing appropriate policies and practices to improve the multiple functionalities (e.g., biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation) during plantation establishment.

Abstract:Ectomycorrhizal fungal community composition and changes are crucial for evaluating ecological restoration. This study was conducted to reveal significant differences in the community structure and composition of soil ectomycorrhizal fungi in different tree afforestation species in the Three-North Shelter Forest Program area of Liaoning. In this experiment, high-throughput sequencing was used to investigate the correlation between soil ectomycorrhizal fungal community characteristics and silvicultural species, including Populus × canadensis , Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica , and Pinus tabuliformis , the main silvicultural species in the Three-North Shelter Forest Program in western Liaoning, China. Among them, Populus × canadensis had the highest soil pH, DOC, available N, and available P, while having the lowest C/N ratio and total C, according to the results. Ascomycota, Mortierellomycota, and Basidiomycota were the three most prevalent phyla in the soil ectomycorrhizal fungal communities between plantations, which also showed significant differences. The diversity of the soil ectomycorrhizal fungal communities was significantly impacted by the physicochemical characteristics of the soil in the various plantations. Under the same climatic conditions, the soil characteristics of different tree species after afforestation showed significant differences, especially between coniferous and broad-leaved species. The significant differences in the composition and structure of soil ectomycorrhizal fungal communities after afforestation greatly illustrate the correlation between soil microbial community characteristics and tree species.

Abstract:Clarifying the response of soil microbial communities to vegetation restoration is essential to comprehend biogeochemical processes and ensure the long-term viability of forest development. To assess the variations in soil microbial communities throughout the growth of Pinus armandii plantations in the karst region, we utilized the "space instead of time" approach and selected four P. armandii stands with ages ranging from 10 to 47 years, along with a grassland control. The microbial community structure was determined by conducting Illumina sequencing of the 16 S rRNA gene and the ITS gene, respectively. The results demonstrated that afforestation with P. armandii significantly influenced soil microbial communities, as indicated by notable differences in bacterial and fungal composition and diversity between the plantations and the control. However, soil microbe diversity did not display significant variation across stand ages. Moreover, the bacterial community exhibited higher responsiveness to age gradients compared to the fungal community. Soil physicochemical factors play a critical role in elucidating microbial diversity and community composition variations during restoration processes. TN, AN, TP, AP, SOC, AK, and pH were the most significant influencing factors for the composition of bacterial community, while TC, SOC, pH, and TC a were the most significant influencing factors for the composition of fungal community. Our findings indicate substantial changes in soil bacterial and fungal communities across successive stages of development. Additionally, the changes in dominant bacteria and fungi characteristics across the age gradient were primarily attributed to variations in the prevailing soil conditions and chemical factors.

Abstract:Afforestation is a widely used method of controlling desertification globally as it significantly impacts the soil quality, microbial community structure, and function. Investigating the effects of various artificial vegetation restoration models on soil microbial communities is crucial in understanding the mechanisms involved in combating desertification. However, research on this topic in arid, desertified regions is limited. In this study, we collected soil samples from two types of artificial forests (single species and mixed species) and bare desert soils in desertified areas of Northwest China to explore the impact of afforestation on soil nutrients, the microbial community composition, network relationships, and carbohydrate degradation abilities using metagenomic sequencing techniques. Our findings indicate that afforestation significantly enhances the soil moisture, total carbon, available phosphorus, and total nitrogen levels. The soil under mixed-species forests exhibited significantly higher levels of total carbon, total phosphorus, available phosphorus, and total nitrogen than that under single-species forests. Following afforestation, the populations of Pseudomonadota, Acidobacteriota, and Cyanobacteria increased significantly, whereas Actinomycetota decreased markedly. In single-species forests, Pseudomonadota and Bacillota were enriched, whereas Chloroflexota, Planctomycetota, and Acidobacteriota were more prevalent in mixed-species plantations. Afforestation increases the complexity and stability of microbial community networks. Afforestation enhances microbial metabolic activity, particularly increasing the abundance of carbon degradation functional genes in forest soils compared to bare desert soils. Mixed-species plantations outperform single-species forests in enhancing carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and the biodegradation and metabolism of xenobiotics. The abundance of functional genes associated with the degradation of starch, cellulose, hemicellulose, chitin, and pectin in mixed-species forests was significantly greater than in single-species plantations. Our study shows that mixed-species afforestation effectively improves the soil quality, enhances the stability of soil microbial communities, and bolsters the carbon cycle in arid regions prone to desertification. The reciprocal relationship between microorganisms and plants may serve as an intrinsic mechanism by which mixed-species afforestation more effectively controls desertification.

Abstract:Cunninghamia lanceolata is an important species in plantations and is widely planted in sub-tropical regions of China because of its fast-growing and productive characteristics. However, the monoculture planting is carried out in the pursuit of economic value. This planting mode has led to problems such as the exhaustion of soil fertility, decrease in vegetation diversity, and decrease in woodland productivity. In order to restore soil fertility and increase timber production, the introduction of broad-leaved tree species to plantations is an effective transformation model. Understanding how forest age changes and stand structure differences drive the composition and diversity of soil microbial communities is helpful in understanding the trend of soil–microbial changes in plantations and evaluating the effects of the introduction of broad-leaved tree species in soil–plant–microbial ecosystems in plantations. Therefore, the purpose of our study is to investigate the effects of forest age and pure forest conversion on C. lanceolata–P. bournei-mixed forest soil microbial community structure and diversity by detecting soil nutrients, enzyme activities, and soil microbial 16S and ITS rRNA gene sequencing. According to the findings, the diversity and abundance of bacterial communities in C. lanceolata plantations of different ages increased first and then decreased with the increase in forest age, and the max value was in the near-mature forest stage. The fungal abundance decreased gradually with stand age, with the lowest fungal diversity at the near-mature stand stage. During the whole growth process, the bacterial community was more limited by soil pH, nitrogen, and phosphorus. After introducing P. bournei into a Chinese fir plantation, the abundance and diversity of the bacterial community did not improve, and the abundance of the fungal community did not increase. However, soil nutrients, pH, and fungal community diversity were significantly improved. The results of these studies indicate that the introduction of broad-leaved tree species not only increased soil nutrient content, but also had a significant effect on the increase in the diversity of soil fungal communities, making the microbial communities of mixed forests more diverse.

Abstract:Soil microbes regulate the carbon cycle and affect the formation and stabilization of soil aggregates. However, the interactions between the soil microbial community and soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions, organic carbon (OC) content in aggregates, and soil aggregate stability after afforestation are remain poorly understood. In our study, we investigated SOC fractions in bulk soil, aggregate-associated OC content, soil aggregate stability, and soil bacterial community with high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing at sites representing natural secondary forest (NF) and managed forest (MF), with cropland (CL) as reference in a degraded karst region of Southwest China. Our results showed that afforestation remarkably increased the SOC fraction and OC content in aggregates, the mean weight diameter (MWD), and the mean geometric diameter (GMD). The most dominant bacterial phyla detected were Acidobacteriota , Actinobacteriota , Proteobacteria , and Chloroflexi across all soils. Afforestation remarkably altered the relative abundances of most of the dominant soil bacteria at the phylum, class, and order levels. Interestingly, such changes in the abundance of soil bacteria taxa had significantly effects on SOC fraction, aggregate-associated OC content, MWD, and MGD. The abundance of dominant bacterial taxa such as Methylomirabilota , Latescibacterota , Methylomirabilia , MB-A2-108 , norank_Latescibacterota ; Dehalococcoidia , Rokubacteriales , Gaiellales , Microtrichales , norank_c__MB-A2-108 , norank_c__norank_p__Latescibacterota , Rhizobiales , and S085 not only remarkably increased but also had significant positive effects on SOC fractions and aggregate-associated OC content after afforestation. Moreover, MWD and MGD were positively correlated with the relative abundance of Methylomirabilota , Methylomirabilia , Rokubacteriales , Latescibacterota , and Rhizobiales . Results indicated the importance of certain soil bacteria for regulating SOC storage and soil aggregate stability. We concluded that afforestation on cropland could alter the abundance of soil bacteria, and these changes modulate the stability of soil aggregates and SOC fractions.

Abstract:In response to human-induced changes in the environment, it is crucial to assess the underlying factors of the impacts of forest conversion on ecosystem function. However, research is limited on bacteria and fungi diversity, functional properties, and community assembly mechanisms in response to forest-to-cropland conversion. We categorized soil bacterial and fungal communities from primary forest, secondary forest, and cropland in Changbai Mountains, China. We found that forest-to-cropland conversion altered the structure and composition of bacterial and fungal communities and might be associated with potential changes in function. The null models indicated that the conversion from forest to cropland enhanced the bacterial dispersal limitation process and weakened the fungal dispersal limitation processes. Furthermore, ecological drift dominates the ecological processes of cropland fungi. Both edaphic properties (the content of C: N ratio, available phosphorus, nitrate) significantly impacted on soil bacterial and fungal community structures. In addition, there were significant functional variations in the fungal community between forest-to-cropland. The ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi showed increased abundance in the forest microbial communities, whereas the endophytic and pathogenic fungal abundance was increased in cropland soil. Taken together, our data illustrate the differences in the response of bacteria and fungi to forest-to-cropland conversion in temperate forest areas and deepen our understanding of the effects of forest conversion on microbial functions and community assembly processes.

Abstract:To address the ecological challenges arising from pure forest plantations and the wood supply–demand imbalance, implementing sustainable forest management is paramount. Accordingly, we studied crop trees at three densities (100, 150, and 200 N/ha) in a subtropical Pinus massoniana plantation. Our study revealed that the dominant phyla and genera within the fungal community remained largely consistent, with Basidiomycota and Ascomycota occupying prominent positions. Notably, the β diversity of the fungal community exhibited significant changes. Ectomycorrhizal and saprophytic fungi emerged as crucial functional guilds, and crop-tree thinning contributed to increased complexity within the fungal network, with a prevalence of positive rather than negative correlations among genera. The significant roles played by Camphor plants and ferns were evident in the fungal networks. Additionally, under crop-tree thinning, plant diversity experienced a significant boost, fostering interactions with the fungal community. Herb diversity played a vital role in the fungal community, affecting it either directly or indirectly, by altering the content of total phosphorus or organic matter in the soil. This study underscores the relationship between undergrowth plants and soil fungal communities, offering a scientific basis for evaluating the sustainability of restoring inefficient forest-plantation ecosystems.

Abstract:Afforestation is an effective approach to rehabilitate degraded ecosystems, but often depletes deep soil moisture. Presently, it is not known how an afforestation‐induced decrease in moisture affects soil microbial community and functionality, hindering our ability to understand the sustainability of the rehabilitated ecosystems. To address this issue, we examined the impacts of 20 years of afforestation on soil bacterial community, co‐occurrence pattern and functionalities along vertical profile (0‐500 cm depth) in a semiarid region of China's Loess Plateau. We showed that the effects of afforestation with a deep‐rooted legume tree on cropland were greater in deep than that of in top layers, resulting in decreased bacterial beta diversity, more responsive bacterial taxa and functional groups, increased homogeneous selection, and decreased network robustness in deep soils (120‐500 cm). Organic carbon and nitrogen decomposition rates and multifunctionality also significantly decreased by afforestation, and microbial carbon limitation significantly increased in deep soils. Moreover, changes in microbial community and functionality in deep layer was largely related to changes in soil moisture. Such negative impacts on deep soils should be fully considered for assessing afforestation's eco‐environment effects and for the sustainability of ecosystems because deep soils have important influence on forest ecosystems in semiarid and arid climates.

Effects of Afforestation on Soil Microbial Diversity and Enzyme Activity: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Afforestation is thought to be one of the key measures for mitigating climate change by capturing atmospheric carbon. However, despite the importance of afforestation in ecosystem functioning, its effects on soil microbial diversity and enzyme activity remain unclear. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis of these effects, using a newly compiled dataset of soil microbial diversity and enzyme activity before and after afforestation collected from 80 sites worldwide. Soil fungal diversity and soil enzyme activities increased significantly after afforestation, but soil bacterial diversity did not change significantly. Among these soil enzymes, the activities of β-1,4-glucosidase (BG), urease (UREA), alkaline phosphatase (AP), dehydrogenase (DEH), and catalase (CAT) increased by 104.7%, 84.0%, 101.7%, 199.2%, and 58.3%, respectively. The responses of soil microbial diversity and enzyme activities varied across afforestation durations, climate zones, prior land use types, and species. Specifically, soil bacterial diversity and the activity of BG increased significantly with afforestation duration, and the increase in BG activity was higher in tropical than in temperate zones. In degraded sites, both soil microbial diversity and enzyme activities significantly increased after afforestation. In addition, structural equation models showed that soil carbon content, nitrogen content, and soil pH value were significant driving factors for the soil microbial community diversity and soil enzyme activities. Overall, our results provided a comprehensive understanding of the changes in soil microbial diversity and enzyme activity under different afforestation conditions, as well as scientific bases for locally adapted afforestation in the future.

Abstract:Afforestation effectively sequesters atmospheric carbon (C) into soil, with the magnitude of C sequestration being constrained by soil nutrient availability, particularly phosphorus (P) derived from parent material. While microbial communities inhabited within soil aggregates can adjust their composition and metabolic activities in response to afforestation, yet their effects on soil P availability remain uncertain. Here, we investigated how microbial adaptations within different soil aggregate‐size fractions (fine‐scale soil structure) were upscaled to influence P availability for soil C sequestration following long‐term (around 32 years) afforestation in subtropical China. We found that afforestation generally led to lower accumulation of total P relative to C and nitrogen (N) in soil aggregates, but induced higher P‐ versus C‐ and N‐acquiring enzyme activities (i.e., lower ecoenzymatic C:P and N:P ratios) compared with the croplands. Structural equation modeling analysis further showed that ecoenzymatic C:P and N:P ratios were primarily associated with the abundance of fungi in the macroaggregates (> 250 μm), but showed significant correlations with the abundance of bacteria in the < 250 μm finer soil particles. These results revealed that microbial community within different soil aggregate‐size fractions developed divergent strategies to overcome P limitation on soil C sequestration and cope with soil C:N:P imbalance following afforestation. Taken together, our work underpins that fine‐scale soil structural effects is important for mechanistic understanding of soil P availability and their impacts on C sequestration following afforestation.
