Abstract:We demonstrate that the ubiquitous laboratory magnetic stirrer provides a simple passive method of magnetic levitation, in which the so-called `flea' levitates indefinitely. We study the onset of levitation and quantify the flea's motion (a combination of vertical oscillation, spinning and "waggling"), finding excellent agreement with a mechanical analytical model. The waggling motion drives recirculating flow, producing a centripetal reaction force that stabilises the flea. Our findings have implications for the locomotion of artificial swimmers, for the development of bidirectional microfluidic pumps and provide an alternative to sophisticated commercial levitators.

Abstract:A permanent magnet can be levitated simply by placing it in the vicinity of another permanent magnet that rotates in the order of 200 Hz. This surprising effect can be easily reproduced in the lab with off-the-shelf components. Here we investigate this novel type of magnetic levitation experimentally and clarify the underlying physics. Using a 19 mm diameter spherical NdFeB magnet as rotor magnet, we capture the detailed motion of levitating, spherical NdFeB magnets, denoted floater magnets. We find that as levitation occurs, the floater magnet frequency-locks with the rotor magnet, and, noticeably, that the magnetization of the floater is oriented close to the axis of rotation and towards the like pole of the rotor magnet. This is in contrast to what might be expected by the laws of magnetostatics as the floater is observed to align its magnetization essentially perpendicular to the magnetic field of the rotor. Moreover, we find that the size of the floater has a clear influence on the levitation: the smaller the floater, the higher the rotor speed necessary to achieve levitation, and the further away the levitation point shifts. We verify that magnetostatic interactions between the rotating magnets are responsible for creating the equilibrium position of the floater. Hence, this type of magnetic levitation does not rely on gravity as a balancing force to achieve an equilibrium position. Based on theoretical arguments and a numerical model, we show that a constant, vertical field and eddy-current enhanced damping is sufficient to produce levitation from rest. This enables a gyroscopically stabilised counter-intuitive steady-state moment orientation, and the resulting magnetostatically stable, mid-air equilibrium point. The numerical model display the same trends with respect to rotation speed and the floater magnet size as seen in the experiments.

Abstract:We theoretically study the levitation of a single magnetic domain nanosphere in an external static magnetic field. We show that, apart from the stability provided by the mechanical rotation of the nanomagnet (as in the classical Levitron), the quantum spin origin of its magnetization provides two additional mechanisms to stably levitate the system. Despite the Earnshaw theorem, such stable phases are present even in the absence of mechanical rotation. For large magnetic fields, the Larmor precession of the quantum magnetic moment stabilizes the system in full analogy with magnetic trapping of a neutral atom. For low magnetic fields, the magnetic anisotropy stabilizes the system via the Einstein–de Haas effect. These results are obtained with a linear stability analysis of a single magnetic domain rigid nanosphere with uniaxial anisotropy in a Ioffe-Pritchard magnetic field.

Abstract:We examine how the position of a magnetizable body in a magnetic fluid droplet resting on a horizontal plane can be controlled by the tilt of an external uniform magnetic field. The paper presents experiments that demonstrate the levitation of the body in a drop and uses an analytical model in which the results are obtained numerically. The impact of problem parameters, such as intensity, direction of the magnetic field, and drop volume, on the levitation height of the body is studied both theoretically and experimentally. It is discovered that there is a set of parameter values required to levitate the body. Theoretical results are in qualitative agreement with the experimentally observed levitation heights.

Abstract:Diamagnetic levitation can provide a completely passive method to support materials against the pull of gravity, and researchers have levitated both solids and fluids. Such levitation can be assisted by increasing the magnetic susceptibility contrast by using a surrounding paramagnetic medium and through buoyancy forces, known as magneto-Archimedean levitation. The magneto-Archimedean levitation of solids has proved useful in chemistry and biology. However, the levitation of fluid droplets has an additional interest because the fluid droplet's shape can deform. We perform experiments and simulations to gauge the squashing or eccentricity of the static magnetically levitated fluid droplet. By carefully characterizing all the parameters affecting the droplet's levitation, using image analysis to estimate the droplet's eccentricity, and using finite element adaptive simulations to find the lowest energy droplet shape, we find good agreement between the simulations and experimental results. As a potential application, we show that the droplet's eccentricity can be used to perform magnetic gradiometry with a potential resolution of $S\sim 8\,{\rm nT/cm}$, over a volume of 10 mm$^3$, which is competitive with other room-temperature magnetic gradiometer techniques.

Abstract:In this article, we present the motion, deformation, and coalescence of ferrofluid droplets suspended in a nonmagnetic fluid, subjected to a uniform magnetic field in both vertical and horizontal directions. A coupling between the simplified multiphase lattice Boltzmann method and the self‐correcting scheme is constructed to numerically solve the two‐dimensional flow field and the magnetostatics equations, respectively. The Cahn‐Hilliard equation is employed to seize the diffuse interface between magnetic and nonmagnetic fluids. In order to validate the model, deformation of a ferrofluid droplet suspended in nonmagnetic fluid is simulated as a test case and the results are compared with numerical and experimental results. Furthermore, a detailed analysis on the behavior of falling ferrofluid droplets and the coalescence between a pair of ferrofluid droplets under the effect of different magnetic fields and different droplets configurations are also presented in this article. The results provide significant insight and a better understanding of these phenomena. It is found that for higher values of magnetic bond number and susceptibility, the droplet deformation is significant and the falling process is faster while a reverse behavior is observed for higher values of Eötvös number. Moreover, the magnetic energy density exhibits an interesting behavior in the vicinity of the droplets. It is concentrated between the droplets with a nonuniform distribution when the droplets are close to each other.

Abstract:Abstract There is a huge number of natural and industrial flows, which are subjected to time-dependent boundary conditions. The flow of a magnetic fluid under the influence of temporal modulations is such an example. Here, we perform numerical simulations of ferrofluidic Couette flow subject to time-periodic modulation (with frequency $$\Omega _H$$ Ω H ) in a spatially homogeneous magnetic field and report how such a modulation can lead to a significant Reynolds number Re enhancement. Consider a modified Niklas approximation we explain the relation between modulation amplitude, driving frequency and stabilization effect. From this, we describe the system response around the primary instability to be sensitive/critical by an alternating field. We detected that such an alternating field provides an easy and in particular accurate controllable key parameter to trigger the system to change from subcritical to supercritical and vice versa. Our findings provide a framework to study other types of magnetic flows driven by time-dependent forcing.

Abstract:A ferrofluid is a mixture that exhibits both magnetism and fluidity. This merit enables the ferrofluid to be used in a wide variety of areas. Here we show that a floating ferrofluid bridge can be induced between two separated boards under a balanced external magnetic field generated by two magnets, while a flying ferrofluid bridge can be induced under an unbalanced external magnetic field generated by only one magnet. The mechanisms of the ferrofluid bridges were discussed and the corresponding mathematical equations were also established to describe the interacting magnetic force between the ferro particles inside the ferrofluid. This work answered a basic question that, except for the well-known floating water bridges that are related to electricity, one can also build up a liquid bridge that is related to magnetism.

Abstract:In this study, the modeling of a six-degree-of-freedom (DOF) magnetic levitation platform actuated by noncontact Lorentz forces was analyzed. First, an analytic model of the actuator forces was studied, and the magnetic flux density in the working gap of the actuators was established using the Image Method, Ampere molecular hypothesis, and Biot-Savart law. The dynamics model of the floater actuated by the actuators was then built using the Newton-Euler method. Moreover, the double-pendulum chaotic nonlinear system of the hoisted floater was simplified as a single-DOF system, in which the interaction effects between two DOFs were considered. Furthermore, modeling of the platform control system was performed, which included an acceleration measuring unit with six uniaxial accelerometers, a position measuring unit with three two-dimensional PSDs, and a control unit that decouples the six-DOF control. Finally, an experimental setup was built to perform ground tests on the platform. The results verified the platform modeling; translational and rotational positioning accuracies were approximately 5 mu m and 40 mu rad at the six DOFs, respectively, and the vibrational suppression efficiencies were greater than 90% for low frequency disturbances. Moreover, Kalman estimators and disturbance observers were introduced into the controller to estimate the movement of the floater and observe the direct disturbance. Simulation testing demonstrated a significant improvement in the vibration-suppression performance of the platform.

Abstract:This article presents a detailed experimental analysis along with numerical simulations to provide the information about shape evolutions and mechanism of actuation and amalgamation of the ferrofluid droplets deposited on a hydrophobic surface by moving a permanent magnet. To validate the numerical methods used in this article, a benchmark phenomenon of a sessile droplet spreading under the effect of a non-uniform magnetic field is first simulated, and the results are compared with available experimental observations. To further ensure the accuracy of experimental and numerical techniques and to understand the wetting properties and spreading behavior of non-stationary ferrofluid droplets, a prototype demonstration of the merging droplets on a hydrophobic solid surface in the presence of a permanent magnet is designed. It is observed that for hydrophobic surfaces, the merging droplets entrap an air bubble at the time of first contact. Moreover, the physics behind the transient variations of droplet morphology and the effect of the state-of-the-art parameters on droplet actuation are also discussed. The force evaluation, energy variations, velocity contours, and velocity vectors of the moving droplet are provided to understand the internal behavior of droplet mobility. Experiments are performed several times with different speeds of moving a magnet to find the critical velocity when the droplet fails to follow the magnet motion. While doing so, we encounter an anomalous phenomenon of thread formation and daughter droplet generation at the receding end of the sliding droplet. A phase diagram is also provided in the end, which describes different regions of the sliding phenomenon.

Stability of a magnetically levitated nanomagnet in vacuum: Effects of gas and magnetization damping

Abstract:In the absence of dissipation a nonrotating magnetic nanoparticle can be stably levitated in a static magnetic field as a consequence of the spin origin of its magnetization. Here we study the effects of dissipation on the stability of the system, considering the interaction with the background gas and the intrinsic Gilbert damping of magnetization dynamics. At large applied magnetic fields we identify magnetization switching induced by Gilbert damping as the key limiting factor for stable levitation. At low applied magnetic fields and for small particle dimensions, magnetization switching is prevented due to the strong coupling of rotation and magnetization dynamics, and the stability is mainly limited by the gas-induced dissipation. In the latter case, high vacuum should be sufficient to extend stable levitation over experimentally relevant timescales. Abstract:It is well known that two permanent magnets of fixed orientation will either always repel or attract one another regardless of the distance between them. However, if one magnet is rotated at sufficient speed, a stable position at a given equilibrium distance can exist for a second free magnet. The equilibrium is produced by magnetic forces alone, which are strong enough to maintain a levitating state under gravity. We show that a stable levitation can be obtained when the rotating magnet is tilted from the rotation axis, with no offset in its position. In this regime, the levitating magnet remains centered and its spinning rate remains negligible, while its magnetic moment precesses in synchronization with the driving magnet. We provide a physical explanation of the levitation through a model relying on static dipolar interactions between the two magnets and present experimental results which validate the proposed theory.

Abstract:Recently, Sengupta and Ghosh [Phys. Fluids 34, 054116, (2022)] published a linear stability analysis of a pressure-driven channel flow which is subject to rotation around a spanwise axis and a uniform magnetic field applied in the same direction. Unfortunately, the formulation of the magnetohydrodynamic part of the problem contains an elementary error which makes the obtained results unphysical. The error is due to unfounded omission of the electric potential contribution in the induced electric current which, thus, does not satisfy the charge conservation.

Abstract:The self-suspension of magnet in magnetic fluid has been widely used in micromechanical systems, sensors, and dampers. The magnetic field associated with the ring magnet is obtained by numerical calculation and simulation through which the axial magnetic levitation force is calculated, and the numerical calculation, simulation, and experimental results agree with each other. The influence of the radial eccentricity of the ring magnet on the axial magnetic levitation force is studied, the ring magnet will experience a maximum axial magnetic levitation force without radial eccentricity. With the increase of radial eccentricity and the decrease of the distance between the bottom of the ring magnet and container, the axial magnetic levitation force will continue to decrease. But it is worth noting that the magnitude of the change caused by radial eccentricity is negligible compared to that of the axial magnetic levitation force.

Abstract:The hydrodynamics of two immiscible fluids in a rectangular Hele-Shaw cell under the influence of a magnetic field is studied, both theoretically and numerically. A linear stability analysis is conducted to determine the effect of magnetic fields on the formation of viscous fingers. As a result, an analytical solution is found to calculate the growth rate of perturbations. For numerical simulation of the two-phase flow, the interfacial tension is treated as a body force using the continuum surface force model and the interface tracking is performed by the volume of fluid method. The variations of the width and growth rate of fingers in an unstable displacement versus Hartmann number, a dimensionless number characterizing the strength of the applied magnetic field, are investigated. By varying the value of Hartmann number systematically, a suppressing effect on the formation of viscous fingers is observed. Consequently, it is detected that there exists a minimum Hartmann number preventing the formation of viscous fingers and ensuring a stable displacement. Our numerical simulations are in agreement with the results of the linear stability analysis and quantify the effect of magnetic fields in mitigating viscous fingering effects and improving the efficiency of the fluid displacement.

Abstract:Active components incorporated in materials generate motion by inducing conformational changes in response to external fields. Magnetic fields are particularly interesting as they can actuate materials remotely. Millimeter-sized ferrofluid droplets placed on a solid surface, surrounded by an ambient gas phase, are shown here to migrate under a rotating magnetic field due to the periodic deformation of the liquid-gas interface. This interface wobbling leads to droplet migration with speeds that increase as the amplitude and frequency of the magnetic field increase. In addition to migrating in a controlled manner, we demonstrate the ability of magnetic droplets to clean surface impurities and transport cargo.

Abstract:The self-levitation of a magnetized object composed of ring permanent magnet, soft magnetic pure iron core (Fe -core), and nonmagnetic aluminum core (Al-core) in ferrofluid (FF) is studied, and the focus is the influence of Fe -core (Al-core) on the magnetic fluid levitation force (MFLF) received by the immersed magnetized object. The formula for calculating MFLF is derived focusing on the gas-liquid and solid-liquid boundary interface between FF and surroundings, and experiments have been done to study the dependence between MFLF and the levitation height of the magnetized object and mass of FF. Researches show that Fe-core has a significant influence on MFLF, and the influence is determined by the magnetization of Fe-core and the distance between Fe-core and the boundary interface. In a word, the use of Fe-core is beneficial to obtain a smaller MFLF, the greater the magnetization of the Fe-core is and the closer it is to the boundary interface of FF, the smaller the MFLF is. The Fe-core near the bottom surface of the ring magnet tends to reduce the maximum MFLF corresponds to an approximate horizontal gas-liquid boundary interface when the levitation height is constant, and the Fe-core near the top surface of the ring magnet is more likely to reduce the change of MFLF caused by the disappear-ance of surface instability of FF. Or, in other words, the Fe-core near the top surface of the ring magnet tends to reduce the MFLF when magnetized object moves upward, and vice versa.
Nonlinear stability of two dusty magnetic liquids surrounded via a cylindrical surface: impact of mass and heat spread

Abstract:The current article examines a nonlinear axisymmetric streaming flow obeying the Rivlin-Ericksen viscoelastic model and overloaded by suspended dust particles. The fluids are separated by an infinite vertical cylindrical interface. A uniform axial magnetic field as well as mass and heat transmission (MHT) act everywhere the cylindrical flows. For the sake of simplicity, the viscous potential theory (VPT) is adopted to ease the analysis. The study finds its significance in wastewater treatment, petroleum transport as well as various practical engineering applications. The methodology of the nonlinear approach is conditional primarily on utilizing the linear fundamental equations of motion along with the appropriate nonlinear applicable boundary conditions (BCs). A dimensionless procedure reveals a group of physical dimensionless numerals. The linear stability requirements are estimated by means of the Routh-Hurwitz statement. The application of Taylor's theory with the multiple time scales provides a Ginzburg-Landau equation, which regulates the nonlinear stability criterion. Therefore, the theoretical nonlinear stability standards are determined. A collection of graphs is drawn throughout the linear as well as the nonlinear approaches. In light of the Homotopy perturbation method (HPM), an estimated uniform solution to the surface displacement is anticipated. This solution is verified by means of a numerical approach. The influence of different natural factors on the stability configuration is addressed. When the density number of the suspended inner dust particles is less than the density number of the suspended outer dust particles, and vice versa, it is found that the structure is reflected to be stable. Furthermore, as the pure outer viscosity of the liquid increases, the stable range contracts, this means that this parameter has a destabilizing effect. Additionally, the magnetic field and the transfer of heat don't affect the nature of viscoelasticity.
