Abstract:Violence by young people is one of the most visible forms of violence in society. In this report, youths are defined as people between the ages of 10 and 19, and emphasis is placed on: a) the extent of the problem: youth homicide rates and trends in youth homicide, non-fatal violence and risk behavior for youth violence; b) the dynamics of youth violence, with emphasis on situational factors; c) risk factors for youth violence: individual factors (biological, psychological and behavioral), relationship factors (family and peer influence); d) community factors: gangs, guns and drugs, and social integration; e) societal factors such as demographic and social changes, income inequality, political structure, cultural influences; f) what can be done to prevent youth violence: individual approaches, relationship approaches, community-based efforts, and societal approaches.
