Abstract:Beginning in 1973, several non-cuprate transition metal and non-transition metal oxides were discovered with superconducting transition temperatures between 10 and 30 K. Retrospectives about these discoveries in spinel structure LiTi2O4 and perovskite structure (Ba,K)(Bi,Pb)O3 are given.

Abstract:THE attainment of unprecedentedly high transition temperatures (Tcs) in the copper oxide superconductors illustrates how working with more complex chemical systems allows greater opportunity to balance opposing forces within a single chemical compound, leading to a better optimization of physical properties. For many desired properties, materials with optimal chemical complexity have undoubtedly not yet been found. This appears to be the case for the intermetallic superconductors, whose study has languished in recent years, and which almost never show Tcs above 15 K. These are almost all binary compounds with substitution-type additives, or, rarely, true ternary compounds such as LuRh4B4 (Tc = 11.7 K; refs 1, 2). If, as some argue (refs 3, 4), materials such as AXC60 (ref. 5) and Ba0.6K0.4BiO3 (refs 6, 7) are conventional electron–phonon superconductors with Jcs of ~30 K, then the absence of higher Tcs in intermetallic compounds may mean only that more complex materials have not been sufficiently explored. We have recently found superconductivity at 23 K (a Tc equal to that of the previous intermetallic record holder, Nb3Ge; ref. 9) in the quaternary intermetallic system yttrium–palladium–boron–carbon8, but we were unable to identify the superconducting phase. Here we report superconductivity at temperatures up to 16.6 K for the single-phase quaternary intermetallic compounds LnNi2B2C (where Ln stands for Y, Tm, Er, Ho or Lu). The presence of the 3d transition metal nickel, and the layered crystal structure10 raise intriguing questions about the origin of the superconductivity, and the relatively high Tcs of these and the Y–Pd–B–C superconductor suggest that there may yet be more surprises in store.

Abstract:The surprising discovery of superconductivity in layered iron-based materials, with transition temperatures climbing as high as 55 K, has lead to thousands of publications on this subject over the past two years. While there is general consensus on the unconventional nature of the Cooper pairing state of these systems, several central questions remain - including the role of magnetism, the nature of chemical and structural tuning, and the resultant pairing symmetry - and the search for universal properties and principles continues. Here we review the progress of research on iron-based superconducting materials, highlighting the major experimental benchmarks that have been so far reached and the important questions that remain to be conclusively answered.

High-temperature Superconducting Oxide without Copper at Ambient Pressure

Abstract:The discovery of superconductivity in the Ba-La-Cu-O system (the cuprate) at the 30 K range in 1986 marked a significant breakthrough, as it far exceeded the highest known critical temperature ($T_c$) at the time and surpassed the predicted 30 K limit, which was thought to be the maximum before phonon-mediated electron pairing would break down due to thermal excitation. Despite recent successful observations of superconductivity in nickel-oxide-based compounds (the nickelate), superconductivity above 30 K at ambient pressure in a system that is isostructural and isoelectronic to the cuprate but without copper has remained elusive. Here, we report a superconducting $T_c$ above 35 K under ambient pressure in hole-doped, late rare-earth infinite-layer nickel oxide (Sm-Eu-Ca-Sr)NiO$_2$ thin films. Electron microscopy reveals a small thickness of ~2 nm of infinite-layer phase stabilised at present, which indicates a higher temperature superconductivity should be observable in clean bulk crystals.

Abstract:The discovery of coexistence of bulk superconductivity and nontrivial topological bands in the compounds, such as LaO and NbC, with a rocksalt structure, motivates us to study the physical properties of TaO with the same structure. Based on preparing successfully TaO polycrystalline sample, we measured its resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat. It was first found that TaO is a type-II superconductor with the critical temperature Tc = 6.20 K and the Ginzburg–Landau parameter κGL(0) = 16.2. The estimated electron–phonon coupling constant λep (0.62) and the specific heat jump ΔCel/γnTc (0.56) demonstrate that TaO is a weak-coupling phonon-mediated superconductor. The lack of single crystal sample impedes us to study experimentally its properties related to the electronic band topology, which is the subject of endeavor in the future.

Abstract:The superconducting oxide DyxBa(1−x)CuO3 has been successfully prepared by the ceramic technology. The superconducting critical temperature, TC, of the sample of composition x=0.625 is 94K, the transition width δTc=1.5K and Tc (π=0)=90.2K. The a.c. magnetic susceptibility measurements show a large diamagnetism at 94K and a saturation of diamagnetic susceptibility near 80K. Although the element Dy has magnetic moment the superconducting transition temperature Tc is as high as that in Y-Ba-Cu-O system. This might mean that Cu-O or Cu-O-Ba system has an essential role for the high-Tc superconductivity.
The Superconducting Oxide Group with Zero-Resistance Temperature above 90-K

Abstract:Seven ABO/sub 3/ type-structure superconducting oxides Sr/sub 0.4/Y/sub 0.6/CuO/sub 3-//sub y/ and Ba/sub 0.4/Ln/sub 0.6/CuO/sub 3-//sub y/ (Ln is Y, Tm, Dy, Gd, Er and Yb, respectively) have been successfully synthesized, the zero-resistance temperatures of which exceed 90 K. The resistivity measurements show that both the R(T) behavior and the T/sub c/ superconducting transition of each sample agree, although the component atoms A in each oxide are obviously different in their outer shell electrons. However the a.c. susceptibility measurements show the difference of M(T) behavior in the normal state which might be due to the difference of the magnetic atoms A. We argue that the Cu-O bonds within the ABO/sub 3/ type structural frame play an important role in the electronic properties in these superconducting oxides. There is a strong interaction between the electrons in this structure. The magnetic scattering of electrons is not strong enough to destroy the high T/sub c/ superconductivity.
Possible high-temperature superconductors predicted from electronic structure and data-filtering algorithms

Abstract:We report here the completion of the electronic structure of the majority of the known stoichiometric inorganic compounds, as listed in the International Crystal Structure Data-base (ICSD). We make a detailed comparison of the electronic structure, crystal geometry and chemical bonding of cuprate high temperature superconductors, with the calculated over sixty thousand electronic structures. Based on compelling similarities of the electronic structures in the normal state and a data-filtering technique, we propose that high temperature superconductivity is possible for electron- or hole-doping in a much larger group of materials than previously considered. The indentified materials are composed of over one hundred layered compounds, most which hitherto are untested with respect to their super conducting properties. Of particular interest are the following materials; Ca$_2$(CuBr$_2$O$_2$), K$_2$CoF$_4$, Sr$_2$(MoO$_4$) and Sr$_4$V$_3$O$_{10}$, which are discussed in detail.

Abstract:In a superconductor electrons form pairs and electric transport becomes dissipation-less at low temperatures. Recently discovered iron-based superconductors have the highest superconducting transition temperature next to copper oxides. In this article, we review material aspects and physical properties of iron-based superconductors. We discuss the dependence of transition temperature on the crystal structure, the interplay between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity by examining neutron scattering experiments, and the electronic properties of these compounds obtained by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in link with some results from scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy measurements. Possible microscopic model for this class of compounds is discussed from a strong coupling point of view.

Abstract:Oxides with perovskite-based structures have been known as essential materials for fascinating phenomena such as high-temperature and unconventional superconductivity. Discoveries of these oxide superconductors have driven the science community to vastly extend the concepts of strongly correlated electron systems. The base of these materials, the cubic perovskite oxides, $AB$O$_3$, also exhibit superconductivity with $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of up to 30 K, as reported for Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$BiO$_3$. Perovskite oxides have their counterparts, antiperovskite oxides $A_3B$O (or "$B$O$A_3$"), in which the position of metal and oxygen ions are reversed and therefore metallic $B$ ions take unusual negative valence states. However, no superconductivity has been reported among antiperovskite oxides. Here, we report the discovery of the first superconducting antiperovskite oxide Sr$_3$SnO with $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of around 5 K. Sr$_3$SnO possesses Dirac points in its electronic structure, originating from the inversion of bands with different parities. Based on theoretical analysis, we propose possibility of topological odd-parity superconductivity analogous to the superfluid $^3$He-B, in moderately hole-doped Sr$_3$SnO, originating from unusual orbital texture on the Fermi surface. We envision that this discovery of a new class of oxide superconductor with the inverted valence configuration will stimulate the exploration of topological materials science based on a variety of antiperovskite oxides.

Abstract:Perovskites Ba1-xKxBi0.30Pb0.70O3-delta (0.0 <= x <= 0.25) have been synthesized under 660 degrees C. P1 space group can describe well the structure of this solid solution. The valences are +3 and +5 for bismuth, +2 and +4 for lead in these compounds. The T-c(zer)degrees (the highest temperature at which the sample shows zero electrical resistivity) of Ba1-xKxBi0.30Pb0.70O3-delta first increases from 8.2 K for x = 0.02 to 11.4 K for x = 0.15, then decreases about to 10.4 K for x = 0.25.

Abstract:Room-temperature superconductivity has always been regarded as the ultimate goal in the fields of solid-state physics and materials science, with its realization holding revolutionary significance, capable of triggering significant changes in energy transmission and storage. However, achieving it poses various challenges. Recent research revealed that material Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O displays room-temperature superconductivity under atmospheric pressure, sparking global interest in further exploration. Here, we utilized solid-phase synthesis to obtain a polycrystalline sample of Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O. X-ray diffraction confirmed its structural consistency with referenced literature. Zero resistance, which is important evidence for superconductivity, was observed above 100$^\circ$ K under ambient pressure in our experiment. Our finding indicates that Pb$_{10-x}$Cu$_x$(PO$_4$)$_6$O is a possible candidate for searching high-temperature superconductors.

Abstract:One of the reasons for the lack of understanding of both the mechanisms underlying the HTSC phenomenon and of the instability of materials with Tc > 300 K may be the widely accepted but wrong ideas about the types of chemical bonding in a substance and the radii of the atoms and ions. A revision of these concepts started in the beginning of the XX century in connection with the investigation of non-stoichiometric compounds (the berthollides) but did not reach a critical level until recently. Most of the HTSC materials, however, are actually non-stoichiometric nanocomposites, whose components "dilute" or "stretch" one another. Each component resides in an "intermediate" state, which still remains poorly studied. For instance, in a system of particles having two paired electrons each, the unbroken electron pairs may start tunneling at a certain "medium" concentration with the system becoming a Bose superconductor (the state between the insulator and the metal with BCS superconductivity). For univalent atoms (Na,Ag), however, such possibility realizes neither in intermediate nor in the final state. Univalent metals are not superconductors. In the berthollides, however, a possible Jahn-Teller-Peierls-type instability may give rise to formation of diatomic molecules (Na2, Ag2)with electron pairs, and superconductivity can set in. It is possibly such systems that were obtained by chance in experiments with univalent components and reported to have Tc of up to 371 K. Structures of a number of HTSC materials are considered.

Abstract:We report the discovery of superconductivity in non-centrosymmetric compounds HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, ZrNiGa, and HfPtAl by measuring their electrical transport and thermodynamic properties. HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, and ZrNiGa crystallize in the ZrNiAl-type crystal structure, whereas HfPtAl crystallizes in the HfRhSn-type crystal structure. Superconducting transitions for HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, ZrNiGa, and HfPtAl are observed at 1.0 K, 1.0 K, 0.42 K, and 0.58 K, respectively. Using the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model, the zero-temperature upper critical fields mu H-0(c2)(0) were estimated to be 0.58 T, 0.24 T, 0.08 T, and 0.34 T for HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, ZrNiGa, and HfPtAl, respectively. The observed jump in electronic heat capacity (Delta C-e/gamma T) across the superconducting transition is 1.3, 1.3, and 1.2 for HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, and HfPtAl, respectively. After the inclusion of the spin-orbit coupling in the band structure calculations, a total of six bands for ZrNiAl, HfPtAl, and ZrNiGa, and eight bands for HfNiAl were found to cross the Fermi level. Spin-orbit coupling induced maximum splitting (Delta E-ASOC/k(B)T(c)) of the electronic bands near the Fermi level was found to be 1697, 517, 1138, and 4230 for HfNiAl, ZrNiAl, ZrNiGa, and HfPtAl, respectively. Large variation of the antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC) among these compounds provides a great opportunity to study the effects of ASOC on the superconducting pairing states.

Abstract:The discovery in February 2008 of superconductivity with the transition temperature about 26 K in fluorine-doped oxyarsenide LaO1–xFxFeAs stimulated numerous studies of superconducting and other physical properties of this and related materials, resulting in a new family of high-temperature (Tc ∼ 26–55 K) superconductors.The experimental and theoretical state of the art is reviewed concerning the synthesis, properties and simulation of the new family and related systems.

Abstract:Following the seminal detection of superconductivity at 35 K in the first cuprate high temperature superconductor Ba-doped ternary LCO (La214) by Mueller and Bednorz in 1986, the discovery of the first liquid nitrogen superconductor quaternary YBCO (Y123) with a transition temperature T-c of 93 K by Chu, Wu, and colleagues in 1987 has ushered in the modern era of high temperature superconductivity (HTS). In the ensuing 25 years, great progress has been made in all areas of HTS research and development, from materials to physics to devices. However, the T-c remains at 134 K in quaternary HBCCO (Hg1223) at ambient pressure achieved in 1993 by Schilling et al. and at 164 K in the same compound under high pressure in the same year by Gao et al. A holistic multidisciplinary enlightened empirical approach has been proposed to search for superconductors with higher T-c, which includes the discovery of new compounds empirically and the realization of novel mechanisms proposed by theorists. Recently, we have observed nonbulk superconductivity in single crystalline rare-earth doped Ca122 samples with an onset T-c of 49 K, higher than the T-c of any known compounds formed of the constituent elements at ambient or under high pressures. Subsequent systematic structural, electrical, magnetic, and calorimetric investigations suggest that the observation may be attributed to an interface-induced T-c, thus suggesting a possible new paradigm for higher T-c. In this presentation, our results will be presented and discussed, following a brief recollection of a few events in our lab in the continuing search for higher T-c, even though a number of review articles have appeared.

Abstract:Here the authors report that by a high pressure synthesis method, superconductivity with an onset transition temperature at 52 K was discovered in a fluorine-doped quaternary iron-arsenide compound Pr[O1-xFx] FeAs, with the zero resistivity and Meissner transition appeared at 44 K and 50 K respectively. As the first non-cuprate compound that superconducts above 50 K, this discovery places these iron arsenide compounds to the second high temperature superconducting family explicitly.
Universal superconducting precursor in perovskite-based oxides

Abstract:A pivotal challenge posed by unconventional superconductors is to unravel how superconductivity emerges upon cooling from the generally complex normal state. Some of the most prominent unconventional superconductors are oxides: strontium titanate, strontium ruthenate, and the cuprates exhibit greatly different superconducting transition temperatures $T_c$, and although their respective superconducting pairing mechanisms remain unknown, they are thought to differ as well. Here we use nonlinear magnetic response, a probe that is uniquely sensitive to the superconducting precursor, to uncover remarkable universal behavior in these three distinct classes of superconductors. We find unusual exponential temperature dependence of the diamagnetic response above the transition temperature $T_c$, with a characteristic temperature scale that strongly varies with $T_c$. We correlate this scale with the sensitivity of $T_c$ to local stress, and show that it is influenced by intentionally-induced structural disorder. The universal behavior is therefore caused by intrinsic, self-organized structural inhomogeneity, inherent to the oxides perovskite-based structure. The prevalence of such inhomogeneity has far-reaching implications for the interpretation of electronic properties of perovskite-related oxides in general.

Abstract:The interplay of magnetic interactions, the dimensionality of the crystal structure and electronic correlations in producing superconductivity is one of the dominant themes in the study of the electronic properties of complex materials. Although magnetic interactions and two-dimensional structures were long thought to be detrimental to the formation of a superconducting state, they are actually common features of both the high transition-temperature (Tc) copper oxides and low-Tc material Sr2RuO4, where they appear to be essential contributors to the exotic electronic states of these materials1. Here we report that the perovskite-structured compound MgCNi3 is superconducting with a critical temperature of 8 K. This material is the three-dimensional analogue of the LnNi2B2C family of superconductors, which have critical temperatures up to 16 K (ref. 2). The itinerant electrons in both families of materials arise from the partial filling of the nickel d-states, which generally leads to ferromagnetism as is the case in metallic Ni. The high relative proportion of Ni in MgCNi3 suggests that magnetic interactions are important, and the lower Tc of this three-dimensional compound—when compared to the LnNi2B2C family—contrasts with conventional ideas regarding the origins of superconductivity.

Abstract:Superconducting transition has been observed by electrical resistance and a.c. magnetic susceptibility measurements in TmxBa1-xCuO3-y with x=0.6 and 0.7 and y>0. The highest TC of the samples measured is observed in Tm0.6-Ba0.4CuO3-y which has the TC(mid)=91K with ΔTC=0.5K, and TC(ρ=0)=90.1K. The a.c. magnetic susceptibility measurements show a very strong diamagnetism at the temperature of resistive midpoint.

Abstract:Since the first report on superconductivity at 26 K in F-doped LaOFeAs at the end of February 2008, the superconducting transition temperature has been quickly raised to about 55 K and many new superconductors have been found, and superconductors with a higher condensing temperature are expected in this system. In this brief Research News article, the author will relate the enormous interest that has been generated towards new superconductor exploration, the refinement and tailoring of the single phase of the available superconductors, the growth of single crystals, and the theoretical and experimental efforts toward targeting the mechanism. Finally, a preliminary comparison between the iron-based system and the cuprates is given, as well as perspectives on these new iron-based superconductors.
