Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effects of periodontal treatment on the clinical response, systemic inflammatory parameters, and metabolic control of type 2 diabetes patients with moderate to severe periodontitis.METHODS:A total of 56 patients with mean clinical attachment level (CAL)>3 mm were included in the subgroup analysis. A repeated-measures ANOVA (group factor: treatment group and control group; time factor: initial visit, 1.5, 3, and 6 months) was used to analyze the probing depth (PD), CAL, bleeding on probing (BOP), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and fasting plasma glucose.RESULTS:Significantly lower PD (F=62.898, P-0.000), CAL (F=51.263, P-0.000), BOP (F=75.164, P=0.000), hsCRP (F=6.391, P=0.010), HbA1c(F=4.536, P=0.011), and fasting plasma glucose level (F= 3.073, P=0.031) were observed after therapeutic periodontal improvement. The inter-group differences for PD (t=-2.050, P=0.045), BOP (t=-4.538, P=0.000), and hsCRP (t=-2.261, P=0.028) were statistically significant after therapy.CONCLUSION:Non-surgical periodontal treatment can effectively improve periodontal status, circulating inflammatory status, and metabolic control of diabetic patients with moderate to severe periodontitis.

Abstract:Background: Scientific evidence on the effects of chronic periodontitis on diabetes mellitus remains inadequate and inconclusive. This intervention study is designed to evaluate the effects of periodontal treatment on clinical response, systemic inflammatory parameters, and metabolic control in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Methods: A total of 134 patients were randomly allocated into two treatment groups and one control group. Treatment group 1 underwent non-surgical periodontal treatment at baseline and additional subgingival debridement at the 3-month follow-up. Patients in treatment group 2 received non-surgical periodontal treatment and supragingival prophylaxis at the 3-month follow-up, and those in the control group received no intervention throughout the study. All participants were reexamined at 1.5, 3, and 6 months after initial treatment. At each visit, clinical periodontal examinations were conducted and blood samples were taken to evaluate high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-alpha), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and lipid profiles. Results: Both treatment groups had a significantly lower hsCRP level after periodontal therapy (P < 0.05). Although HbA1c declined significantly in treatment group 2 (P <0.05), the intergroup difference for HbA1c, FPG, TNF-alpha, and lipid profiles was not statistically significant after therapy (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Non-surgical periodontal treatment can effectively improve periodontal and circulating inflammatory status. Despite a lack of strong evidence, trends in some results support improved glycemic control after periodontal treatment in patients with diabetes. J Periodontol 2012;83:435-443.

Abstract:<p>We aimed to identify response patterns to non‐surgical periodontal therapy and to investigate whether the new classification system for periodontitis reflects response to treatment after 1 yr. At baseline, data on sociodemographic status, smoking, and diabetes were obtained from participants with periodontal disease. Clinical periodontal data and subgingival plaque were also collected. Participants underwent non‐surgical periodontal therapy, and after 3 and 12 months, clinical data were reassessed. Factor analyses, group‐based‐trajectory modeling, and mixed‐effects regression models were used for data analysis. Factor analysis of the baseline periodontal parameters revealed two different periodontitis dimensions: 'moderate' and 'severe'. Two response patterns for each of these periodontitis dimensions were identified. Periodontal therapy had a beneficial effect on both 'moderate' and 'severe' periodontitis; however, individuals with higher levels of disease at baseline experienced greater treatment effect. Regarding the new classification system, while the staging component distinguished different levels of 'moderate' and 'severe' periodontitis before and after treatment, the grading component did not. This study shows the beneficial effect of non‐surgical periodontal therapy on both 'moderate' and 'severe' periodontitis. However, the benefit was limited among individuals with low levels of disease. The new classification system did not adequately reflect the periodontal response to therapy in this patient group.</p>

Progression of periodontitis in a sample of regular and irregular compliers under maintenance therapy: a 3-year follow-up study

Abstract:Background: To our knowledge, prospective studies (matched for sex, smoking, and diabetes) that investigated the influence of compliance in the progression of periodontitis and tooth loss in periodontal maintenance therapy (PMT) programs were not previously reported. Methods: A total of 58 regular complier (RC) and 58 erratic complier (EC) individuals were recruited from a prospective cohort with 238 patients under PMT and matched by sex, diabetes, and smoking habits. A full-mouth periodontal examination that included bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depths (PDs), clinical attachment levels, and number of teeth were determined at all PMT visits during a 3-year interval. The influence of variables of interest was tested through multivariate logistic regression. Results: The progression of periodontitis and tooth loss was significantly lower among RC compared to EC patients. A higher progression of periodontitis was observed among EC patients who smoked. The final logistic model for the progression of periodontitis in the RC group included smoking (odds ratio [OR]: 4.2) and >30% of sites with BOP (OR: 2.8), and the final logistic model for the progression of periodontitis in the EC group included smoking (OR: 7.3), >30% of sites with BOP (OR: 3.2), PDs of 4 to 6 mm in 10% of sites (OR: 3.5), diabetes (OR: 1.9), and number of lost teeth (OR: 3.1). Conclusions: RC patients presented a lower progression of periodontitis and tooth loss compared to EC patients. This result highlighted the influence of the pattern of compliance in maintaining a good periodontal status. Moreover, important risk variables such as smoking and diabetes influenced the periodontal status and should be considered when determining the risk profile and interval time for PMT visits.
Ten-year changes of periodontitis grading using direct and indirect evidence: a retrospective evaluation

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate two methods for assessing the changes in periodontitis grading in patients undergoing supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) ten years (T10) after retrospective baseline (BL) grading. Materials and methods: The periodontitis grade of 51 SPT-patients was assessed using indirect evidence as the primary criterion for periodontitis progression at BL and T10 (radiographic bone loss/age index, periodontitis phenotype). Grading at T10 was also performed using the direct evidence for periodontitis progression (clinical attachment loss over the previous five years). The use of indirect evidence for periodontal progression at BL and T10 was defined as method 1 (M1) to assess the changes in periodontitis grading. The use of indirect evidence at BL and direct evidence at T10 was defined as method 2 (M2). Changes in periodontitis grading using M1 and M2 were evaluated (Wilcoxon signed-rank test). Agreement between M1 and M2 was assessed (Cohen's kappa). Results: Indirect BL-grading revealed five grade B and 46 grade C patients. The indirect grading at T10 revealed 17 grade B and 34 grade C patients. The direct T10-grading classified all patients as grade C. M1 led to an overall improvement in periodontitis grading after ten years of SPT (p=0.00297), whereas M2 led to a deterioration (p=0.0369). The comparison between M1 and M2 showed that they lead to different results in terms of grading (Cohen's Kappa=0.116208). Conclusions: Periodontitis grading may change during SPT. Using indirect or direct evidence as the primary grading criterion during SPT may lead to different results.
Radiographic diagnosis of periodontal disease progression

Abstract:This review covers papers on the use of radiographs to assist in the assessment of periodontal disease progression, choice of treatment, and evaluation of treatment outcome, both in practice and clinical research. It reviews the latest papers on radiographic prescription strategies, the average quality of radiographs in daily practice, the potential of new developments, and the clinical applications of digital subtraction. The review ends with some interesting reports on the effect of smoking on the periodontal tissues, the risk of periodontal disease progression to teeth with periapical pathology, remodeling characteristics after guided tissue regeneration, and the effect of implant placement on the periodontium of neighboring teeth, all of which include conventional radiographic evaluations as major parameters in the protocols. In general, there is a striking discrepancy between the quality of radiographs taken in daily practice and the valuable information that could be gained from properly applied radiographic procedures. Furthermore, improved education in this field is urgently needed to raise the quality of radiographic diagnosis to acceptable standards.
The accuracy of clinical parameters in detecting periodontal disease activity

Abstract:A review of the literature shows that, currently, no reliable clinical parameter exists either to indicate existing disease activity or to predict future periodontal deterioration. The common clinical parameters used in practice merely assess gingival status or indicate that tissue destruction has occurred earlier (Fig 9). Although many clinicians mistakenly use them as indicators of ongoing destruction, these clinical findings have more value as educational and motivational tools. More sophisticated parameters (that is, antibody tests, and subtraction radiography) are being developed, and their accuracy in identifying disease activity is being tested. These parameters differ in their degrees of accuracy and reliability and, currently, are best suited for research purposes. Quantitative plaque assessments, once shown to have a correlation with incidence of periodontal disease in study populations, have been proved recently to be inaccurate in assessing periodontal disease activity when evaluating specific individuals and sites. Qualitative assessments are more reliable in determining areas that have suffered from specific periodontal disease processes, but their accuracy in identifying ongoing deterioration is questionable. Although it generally is agreed that bacterial plaque is the cause of periodontitis, no plaque assessment to date has been reliable consistently as an indicator of existing or impending periodontal disease activity. Plaque indexes can be used to educate and motivate patients in the removal of this most important etiologic agent. Clinical gingival assessments do not indicate existing or impending periodontal disease activity with loss of attachment and, therefore, are of little value in diagnosing periodontitis. Because gingival inflammation is an undesirable deviation from health, gingival indexes are valuable as a signal to the clinician to manage these patients more closely.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Application of 2017 New Classification of Periodontal Diseases and Conditions to Localized Aggressive Periodontitis: Case Series

Abstract:Introduction: This case series illustrates the use of the new classification system of periodontal diseases and conditions. This case series highlights how the assessment of the rate of progression of periodontal disease, that is, grading, allows for the identification of individual patients, who are more likely to require active periodontal treatment intervention to prevent onset of disease, need long-term disease control, or referral to a periodontist. Case presentation: A 17-year-old female presents with slight gingival inflammation. However, exploration into indirect evidence of disease progression, that is, family history of periodontal disease, leads to the discovery of advanced disease in the mother. The patient was diagnosed with generalized Stage I Grade C periodontitis. The patient was managed with initial periodontal therapy, consisting of scaling and root planing with systemic antibiotic therapy. Special consideration was taken to mitigate the potential for rapid disease progression because of indirect evidence of familial history of aggressive periodontitis and indicated the need for early intervention. The case resulted in remission of the progression of periodontal disease. Conclusions: Applying the staging and grading system leads to an understanding of the need for periodontal referral and early periodontal treatment intervention. Wide adoption of staging and grading could increase early referral leading to early periodontal treatment intervention, decreased tooth loss, and have a potential effect on overall health improvement and wellness.
Long-term assessment of periodontal disease progression after surgical or non-surgical treatment: a systematic review

Abstract:The primary aim of this systematic review was to assess the evidence on periodontal disease progression after treatment in patients receiving supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) and to identify predictors of clinical attachment level (CAL) loss. A protocol was developed to answer the following focused question: In adult patients treated for periodontitis, what is the disease progression in terms of CAL loss after surgical or non-surgical treatment? Randomized controlled clinical trials, prospective cohort studies, and longitudinal observational human studies with a minimum of 5 years of follow-up after surgical or non-surgical treatment that reported CAL and probing depth changes were selected. Seventeen publications reporting data from 14 investigations were included. Data from 964 patients with a follow-up range of 5-15 years was evaluated. When the CAL at the latest follow-up was compared to the CAL after active periodontal therapy, 10 of the included studies reported an overall mean CAL loss of ≤0.5 mm, 3 studies reported a mean CAL loss of 0.5-1 mm, and 4 studies reported a mean CAL loss of >1 mm. Based on 7 publications, the percentage of sites showing a CAL loss of ≥2 mm varied from 3% to 20%, and a high percentage of sites with CAL loss was associated with poor oral hygiene, smoking, and poor compliance with SPT. The outcomes after periodontal therapy remained stable over time. Disease progression occurred in a reduced number of sites and patients, mostly associated with poor oral hygiene, poor compliance with SPT, and smoking.
Impact of Treatment on Host Responses in Young Individuals with Periodontitis

Abstract:Journal of Dental Research, Ahead of Print. Grade C periodontitis in young individuals is characterized by severe/rapid periodontal destruction, usually early onset, in systemically healthy individuals. An individual's host response, triggered by a dysbiotic subgingival biofilm, has been reported as a contributor to the tissue destruction, although mechanisms of this response and contributions to such disease remain poorly understood. Nonsurgical treatment has resulted in positive clinical responses for both localized (now molar-incisor pattern) and generalized forms of grade C periodontitis, especially when adjunctive systemic antibiotics are used. Nonsurgical treatment may also affect host responses, although mechanisms leading to significant changes in this response remain unclear. Significant effects on inflammatory response to antigens/bacteria have been described posttreatment, but evidence for long-term effects remains limited. Nonsurgical treatment in these individuals may also modulate a variety of host markers in serum/plasma and gingival crevicular fluid along with clinical parameter improvements. The impact of other adjuncts to nonsurgical treatment focusing on controlling exacerbated immunoinflammatory responses needs to be further explored in grade C periodontitis in young individuals. Recent evidence suggests that nonsurgical treatment with adjunctive laser therapy may modulate host and microbial responses in those subjects, at least in the short term. Available evidence, while very heterogeneous (including variations in disease definition and study designs), does not provide clear conclusions on this topic yet provides important insights for future studies. In this review, studies within the past decade evaluating the impact of nonsurgical treatment on systemic/local host responses in young individuals with grade C periodontitis, as well as long-term clinical responses posttreatment, will be critically appraised and discussed.

Abstract:Periodontitis is an infectious disease that is associated with microorganisms that colonize the tooth surface. Clinically, periodontal condition stability reflects dynamic equilibrium between bacterial challenge and host response. Therefore, periodontal pathogen assessment can assist in the early detection of periodontitis. Here we developed a grading system called the periodontal pathogen index (PPI) by analyzing the copy numbers of multiple pathogens both in healthy and chronic periodontitis patients. We collected 170 mouthwash samples (64 periodontally healthy controls and 106 chronic periodontitis patients) and analyzed the salivary 16S rRNA levels of nine pathogens using multiplex, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Except for Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, copy numbers of all pathogens were significantly higher in chronic periodontitis patients. We classified the samples based on optimal cut-off values with maximum sensitivity and specificity from receiver operating characteristic curve analyses (AUC = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.87-0.96) into four categories of PPI: Healthy (1-40), Moderate (41-60), At Risk (61-80), and Severe (81-100). PPI scores were significantly higher in all chronic periodontitis patients than in the controls (odds ratio: 31.7, 95% CI: 13.41-61.61) and were associated with age, scaling as well as clinical characteristics including clinical attachment level and plaque index. Our PPI grading system can be clinically useful for the early assessment of pathogenic bacterial burden and follow-up monitoring after periodontitis treatment.

Abstract:Background The new classification system for periodontal and peri-implant diseases mentioned a few key points, including (1) "clinical gingival health," which was defined for the first time, and (2) staging and grading system. Thus, the present study defines the practicability of using the current classification system in day-to-day practice. Aim The primary aim of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the new classification system for periodontal and peri-implant diseases and its application in routine dental practices. Materials and methods This is a cross-sectional retrospective, non-interventional study consisting of 4,993 patients who were under active periodontal therapy as well as supportive periodontal therapy. Results Among patients diagnosed with dental biofilm-induced gingivitis with no underlying risk factors, 1105 (73.3%) exhibited bleeding on probing and 897 (45%) showed supragingival or subgingival calculus. Among the stage II grade B periodontitis group, 488 (28.9%) showed beginning destructive periodontal disease and 197 (50.4%) showed established destructive periodontal disease. Conclusion The implementation of the new classification system in routine dental practice has been readily accepted by clinicians. Staging and grading system of classification helps in assessing the severity, extent, and progression of disease.

Abstract:Periodontitis, one of the most common oral diseases, is a chronic inflammatory condition occur in response to bacterial plaque biofilms. Plaque control and oral hygiene instructions are the most widely used and effective nonsurgical treatment for periodontitis, which is based on a partnership between patient and clinician and requires a life-long commitment. The objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of internet-based nursing interventions for the treatment of patients with periodontitis. The findings from this study may help to enhance the therapeutic outcomes for patients with periodontitis.

The association between periodontitis patients' chief complaints and the stage of periodontitis: A clinical retrospective study

Abstract:Objectives: The purposes of this retrospective study were to investigate the prevalence of various periodontal chief complaints (pCCs) of patients, diagnosed with periodontitis, as well as to identify the association between pCCs and periodontal parameters or periodontitis staging according to AAP/EFP 2017 classification. Materials and methods: Five hundred eighty-nine patients, applied to the clinic with pCCs, were screened. The demographic characteristics, smoking status, brushing behaviors, history of periodontal therapy, medical data, and periodontal parameters were obtained. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the most common pCCs and co-variables among the indicators of Stage III and IV periodontitis. Results: In Stage IV periodontitis, patients with pCC of mobility were observed the most (26.8%), and pCC of halitosis were the least (7.3%). Among all pCCs of patients, those with the pCC of gingival enlargement and tooth mobility had the highest percentage of sites with PPD ≥ 4 mm and CAL ≥ 5 mm, respectively (p < .001). According to regression analysis, those with pCC of gingival bleeding, recession and mobility were more likely to be in Stage IV than those in Stage I/II. Conclusion: Among pCCs, only patients with pCCs of mobility, gingival recession and bleeding are related to periodontitis staging. Moreover, the extent of periodontal pockets in patients with pCC of gingival enlargement, and the extent of attachment loss in patients with pCC of mobility are greater than other patients. Clinical relevance: New machine-learning technology models can be developed with the aim of classifying the patients based on their chief complaints, to support diagnosing the severity of periodontal diseases.

Abstract:This study evaluated the effect of smoking on the clinical response to non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy. 74 adult subjects with moderate to advanced periodontitis were treated according to a split-mouth design involving the following treatment modalities: coronal scaling, root planing, modified Widman surgery, and flap with osseous resectional surgery. Clinical parameters assessed included probing depth, probing attachment level, horizontal attachment level in furcation sites, recession, presence of supragingival plaque and bleeding on probing. Data were collected: initially, 4 weeks following phase-I therapy, 10 weeks following phase-II therapy and on a yearly basis during 6 years of maintenance care. Data analysis demonstrated that smokers exhibited significantly less reduction of probing depth and less gain of probing attachment level when compared to non-smokers immediately following active therapy and during each of the 6 years of maintenance (p < 0.05). A greater loss of horizontal attachment level was evident in smokers at each yearly exam during maintenance therapy (p < 0.05). There were no differences between groups in recession changes. In general, these findings were true for the outcomes following all 4 modalities of therapy and were most pronounced in the deepest probing depth category (> or = 7 mm). Statistical analysis showed a tendency for smokers to have slightly more supragingival plaque and bleeding on probing. In summary, smokers responded less favorably than non-smokers to periodontal therapy which included 3-month maintenance follow-up.

Abstract:Authors were assigned the task to develop case definitions for periodontitis in the context of the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions. The aim of this manuscript is to review evidence and rationale for a revision of the current classification, to provide a framework for case definition that fully implicates state-of-the-art knowledge and can be adapted as new evidence emerges, and to suggest a case definition system that can be implemented in clinical practice, research and epidemiologic surveillance.

Abstract:The human microbiome influences and reflects the health or disease state of the host. Periodontitis, a disease affecting about half of American adults, is associated with alterations in the subgingival microbiome of individual tooth sites. Although it can be treated, the disease can reoccur and may progress without symptoms. Without prognostic markers, follow-up examinations are required to assess reoccurrence and disease progression and to determine the need for additional treatments. To better identify and predict the disease progression, we aim to determine whether the subgingival microbiome can serve as a diagnosis and prognosis indicator. Using metagenomic shotgun sequencing, we characterized the dynamic changes in the subgingival microbiome in periodontitis patients before and after treatment at the same tooth sites. At the taxonomic composition level, the periodontitis-associated microorganisms were significantly shifted from highly correlated in the diseased state to poorly correlated after treatment, suggesting that coordinated interactions among the pathogenic microorganisms are essential to disease pathogenesis. At the functional level, we identified disease-associated pathways that were significantly altered in relative abundance in the two states. Furthermore, using the subgingival microbiome profile, we were able to classify the samples to their clinical states with an accuracy of 81.1%. Follow-up clinical examination of the sampled sites supported the predictive power of the microbiome profile on disease progression. Our study revealed the dynamic changes in the subgingival microbiome contributing to periodontitis and suggested potential clinical applications of monitoring the subgingival microbiome as an indicator in disease diagnosis and prognosis. Importance: Periodontitis is a common oral disease. Although it can be treated, the disease may reoccur without obvious symptoms. Current clinical examination parameters are useful in disease diagnosis but cannot adequately predict the outcome of individual tooth sites after treatment. A link between the subgingival microbiota and periodontitis was identified previously; however, it remains to be investigated whether the microbiome can serve as a diagnostic and prognostic indicator. In this study, for the first time, we characterized the subgingival microbiome of individual tooth sites before and after treatment using a large-scale metagenomic analysis. Our longitudinal study revealed changes in the microbiota in taxonomic composition, cooccurrence of subgingival microorganisms, and functional composition. Using the microbiome profiles, we were able to classify the clinical states of subgingival plaque samples with a high accuracy. Follow-up clinical examination of sampled sites indicates that the subgingival microbiome profile shows promise for the development of diagnostic and prognostic tools.

Abstract:Periodontal disease is classically characterized by progressive destruction of the soft and hard tissues of the periodontal complex, mediated by an interplay between dysbiotic microbial communities and aberrant immune responses within gingival and periodontal tissues. Putative periodontal pathogens are enriched as the resident oral microbiota becomes dysbiotic and inflammatory responses evoke tissue destruction, thus inducing an unremitting positive feedback loop of proteolysis, inflammation, and enrichment for periodontal pathogens. Keystone microbial pathogens and sustained gingival inflammation are critical to periodontal disease progression. However, recent studies have revealed the importance of previously unidentified microbes involved in disease progression, including various viruses, phages and bacterial species. Moreover, newly identified immunological and genetic mechanisms, as well as environmental host factors, including diet and lifestyle, have been discerned in recent years as further contributory factors in periodontitis. These factors have collectively expanded the established narrative of periodontal disease progression. In line with this, new ideologies related to maintaining periodontal health and treating existing disease have been explored, such as the application of oral probiotics, to limit and attenuate disease progression. The role of systemic host pathologies, such as autoimmune disorders and diabetes, in periodontal disease pathogenesis has been well noted. Recent studies have additionally identified the reciprocated importance of periodontal disease in potentiating systemic disease states at distal sites, such as in Alzheimer’s disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, and oral cancer, further highlighting the importance of the oral cavity in systemic health. Here we review long-standing knowledge of periodontal disease progression while integrating novel research concepts that have broadened our understanding of periodontal health and disease. Further, we delve into innovative hypotheses that may evolve to address significant gaps in the foundational knowledge of periodontal disease.

Digital Assessment of Gingiva Morphological Changes and Related Factors after Initial Periodontal Therapy.

Abstract:PURPOSE To establish a digital assessment method for changes in gingiva morphology following initial periodontal therapy. METHODS Ten periodontal-healthy participants were selected, and digital models obtained by intraoral scanning and digitizing conventional impressions. Using dentition as a reference, best fit alignment between digital models was carried out. Root mean square (RMS) was calculated to evaluate differences in models, and gingival volume discrepancy (GVD) was calculated after combining separated models. Trueness of intraoral scanning used on the gingiva was evaluated using RMS and GVD between intraoral and conventional models with conventional models as references; precision was evaluated among different intraoral models of one participant. Twenty-three periodontitis-affected participants underwent intraoral scanning immediately after supragingival scaling and two weeks after initial periodontal therapy. The GVD of gingiva between two digital models was calculated to assess gingival changes and related factors after therapy. RESULTS Trueness of intraoral scanning used on the entire gingiva was 83.65 ± 14.43 μm; precision was 70.71 ± 25.58 μm; GVD error measured by digital models was 15.28 ± 10.00 mm³. Gingival volume in periodontitis-affected participants decreased 104.04-1155.09 mm³ after therapy. Probing depth, bleeding index, and keratinized gingival width positively correlated with changes in gingival volume. CONCLUSION Intraoral scanning can be recommended as a method of evaluating morphological changes in gingiva.

Abstract:Objective To obtain the epidemiological information on disease status in untreated chronic periodontitis patients.Methods Two hundred untreated chronic periodontitis patients were selected from employed adults in an institute located in urban area. They were aged from 22 to 64. Periodontal measurements were performed on all teeth except the third molars, 6 sites for each tooth. Probing depth, attachment loss, and bleeding on probing were measured.Results Mean attachment loss in this population was 1.87mm. The severity of attachment loss increased with patients' age. It was more severe in male than in female, and more severe in bleeding sites than in non-bleeding sites. The most severe attachment loss occurred in mandibular incisors and the maxillary first molars. Maxillary canines were the least in AL severity.Conclusion The severity of chronic periodontitis was associated with patient age, gender, gingival inflammation, and manifested site-specificity.
