Abstract: The past decade has witnessed the emergence of abundant topological phases protected by crystalline symmetries, such as topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) [1, 2]. Recent discoveries of higher-order [3-6] and fragile [7-10] TCIs illustrate that gapless edge states may not be a universal feature of TCIs, and therefore request alternative experimental signatures. Here, we demonstrate that disclinations, i.e., rotational topological defects in crystals, can serve as a novel probe of TCIs without invoking edge boundaries. Using photonic crystals, i.e., artificial periodic structures giving access to versatile manipulations of light [11], we observe topologically-protected photonic modes localized at disclinations in photonic TCIs. We create physical realizations of photonic TCIs and disclinations using macroscopic dielectric structures based on hexagonal lattices. By driving the photonic system across a topological transition via tuning the unit-cell geometry, we find that the topological disclination modes disappear in the trivial phase. The experimental discovery of the bulk-disclination correspondence unveils a new horizon in topological physics, while its photonic realization provides a pathway toward topological photonics [12-22] beyond the bulk-edge correspondence.

Abstract:Higher-order topological insulators are unusual materials that can support topologically protected states, whose dimensionality is lower than the dimensionality of the structure at least by 2. Among the most intriguing examples of such states are zero-dimensional corner modes existing in two-dimensional higher-order insulators. In contrast to corner states, recently discovered disclination states also belong to the class of higher-order topological states but are bound to the boundary of the disclination defect of the higher-order topological insulator and can be predicted using the bulk-disclination correspondence principle. Here, we present the first example of the nonlinear photonic disclination state bifurcating from its linear counterpart in the disclination lattice with a pentagonal or heptagonal core. We show that nonlinearity allows us to tune the location of the disclination states in the bandgap and notably affects their shapes. The structure of the disclination lattice is crucial for the stability of these nonlinear topological states: for example, disclination states are stable in the heptagonal lattice and are unstable nearly in the entire gap of the pentagonal lattice. Nonlinear disclination states reported here are thresholdless and can be excited even at low powers. Nonlinear zero-energy states coexisting in these structures with disclination states are also studied. Our results suggest that disclination lattices can be used in the design of various nonlinear topological functional devices, while disclination states supported by them may play an important role in applications, where strong field confinement together with topological protection are important, such as the design of topological lasers and enhancement of generation of high harmonics.

Abstract:Topological crystalline insulators are a class of materials with a bulk energy gap and edge or surface modes, which are protected by crystalline symmetry, at their boundaries. They have been realized in electronic systems: in particular, in SnTe. In this work, we propose a mechanism to realize photonic boundary states topologically protected by crystalline symmetry. We map this one-dimensional system to a two-dimensional lattice model with opposite magnetic fields, as well as opposite Chern numbers in its even and odd mirror parity subspaces, thus corresponding to a topological mirror insulator. Furthermore, we test the robustness of the boundary modes depending on their mirror parity by performing time dependent evolution simulations in a photonic setting with realistic experimental parameters.

Abstract:Backscattering-immune chiral modes arise along certain line defects in three-dimensional materials. Here, we study the Floquet chiral modes along Floquet topological defects, namely, the defects come entirely from spatial modulations of periodic driving. We define a precise topological invariant that counts the number of Floquet chiral modes, which is expressed as an integral on a five-dimensional torus parametrized by (k(x), k(y), k(z), theta, t). This work demonstrates the possibility of creating chiral modes in three-dimensional bulk materials by modulated driving.

Abstract:Topology has been revealed to play a fundamental role in physics in the past decades. Topological insulators have unconventional gapless edge states where disorder-induced back-scattering is suppressed. In photonics, such edge states lead to unidirectional waveguides which are useful for integrated photonic chips. Cavity modes, another type of fundamental components in photonic chips, however, are not protected by band topology because of their lower dimensions. Here we demonstrate that concurrent wavevector-space and real-space topology, dubbed as the "dual-topology", can lead to light-trapping in lower-dimensions. The resultant photonic bound state emerges as a Jackiw-Rebbi soliton mode localized on a dislocation in a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal, as predicted theoretically and discovered experimentally. Such a strongly-confined 0D localized mode, which is solely due to the topological mechanism, is found to be robust against perturbations. Our study unveils a new mechanism for topological light-trapping in lower-dimensions, which is valuable for fundamental physics and a variety of applications in photonics.

Abstract:The interplay between real-space topological lattice defects and the reciprocal-space topology of energy bands can give rise to novel phenomena, such as one-dimensional topological modes bound to screw dislocations in three-dimensional topological insulators. We obtain direct experimental observations of dislocation-induced helical modes in an acoustic analog of a weak three-dimensional topological insulator. The spatial distribution of the helical modes is found through spin-resolved field mapping, and verified numerically by tight-binding and finite-element calculations. These one-dimensional helical channels can serve as robust waveguides in three-dimensional media. Our experiment paves the way to studying novel physical modes and functionalities enabled by topological lattice defects in three-dimensional classical topological materials.

Abstract:Topological defects, such as domain walls and vortices, have long fascinated physicists. A novel twist is added in quantum systems such as the B-phase of superfluid helium He3, where vortices are associated with low-energy excitations in the cores. Similarly, cosmic strings may be tied to propagating fermion modes. Can analogous phenomena occur in crystalline solids that host a plethora of topological defects? Here, we show that indeed dislocation lines are associated with one-dimensional fermionic excitations in a ‘topological insulator’, a novel phase of matter believed to be realized in the material Bi0.9Sb0.1. In contrast to fermionic excitations in a regular quantum wire, these modes are topologically protected and not scattered by disorder. As dislocations are ubiquitous in real materials, these excitations could dominate spin and charge transport in topological insulators. Our results provide a novel route to creating a potentially ideal quantum wire in a bulk solid. Topological insulators are band insulators in which spin–orbit coupling takes the role of the applied magnetic field in the integer quantum Hall effect. Theory now predicts that dislocations in such systems can give rise to one-dimensional topologically protected states, resembling helical modes at the edge of a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulator.
Topological Corner Modes by Composite Wannier States in Glide-Symmetric Photonic Crystal

Abstract:Second-order topological insulators can be characterized by their bulk polarization, which is believed to be intrinsically connected to the center of the Wannier function. In this study, we demonstrate the existence of second-order topological insulators that feature a pair of partially degenerate photonic bands. These arise from the nonsymmorphic glide symmetry in an all-dielectric photonic crystal. The center of the maximally localized Wannier function (MLWF) is consistently located at the origin but is not equivalent with respect to the sum of constituent polarizations. As a result, topological corner modes can be identified by the distinctly hybridized MLWFs that truncate at the sample boundary. Through full-wave numerical simulations paired with microwave experiments, the second-order topology is clearly confirmed and characterized. These topological corner states exhibit notably unique modal symmetries, which are made possible by the inversion of the Wannier bands. Our results provide an alternative approach to explore higher-order topological physics with significant potential for applications in integrated and quantum photonics.

Polaritonic Chern insulators in monolayer semiconductors

Abstract:Systems with strong light-matter interaction opens up new avenues for studying topological phases of matter. Examples include exciton-polaritons, mixed light-matter quasiparticles, where the topology of the polaritonic band structure arises from the collective coupling between matter wave and optical fields strongly confined in periodic dielectric structures. Distinct from light-matter interaction in a uniform environment, the spatially varying nature of the optical fields leads to a fundamental modification of the well-known optical selection rules, which were derived under the plane wave approximation. Here we identify polaritonic Chern insulators by coupling valley excitons in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) to photonic Bloch modes in a dielectric photonic crystal (PhC) slab. We show that polaritonic Dirac points (DPs), which are markers for topological phase transition points, can be constructed from the collective coupling between valley excitons and photonic Dirac cones in the presence of both time-reversal and inversion symmetries. Lifting exciton valley degeneracy by breaking time-reversal symmetry leads to gapped polaritonic bands with non-zero Chern numbers. Through numerical simulations, we predict polaritonic chiral edge states residing inside the topological gaps. Our work paves the way to further explore polaritonic topological phases and their practical applications in polaritonic devices.

Abstract:Defect modes in two-dimensional periodic photonic structures have found use in diverse optical devices. For example, photonic crystal cavities confine optical modes to subwavelength volumes and can be used for enhancement of nonlinearity, lasing and cavity quantum electrodynamics. Defect-core photonic crystal fibres allow for supercontinuum generation and endlessly single-mode fibres with large cores. However, these modes are notoriously fragile: small structural change leads to significant detuning of resonance frequency and mode volume. Here, we show that photonic topological crystalline insulator structures can be used to topologically protect the mode frequency at mid-gap and minimize the volume of a photonic defect mode. We experimentally demonstrate this in a femtosecond-laser-written waveguide array by observing the presence of a topological zero mode confined to the corner of the array. The robustness of this mode is guaranteed by a topological invariant that protects zero-dimensional states embedded in a two-dimensional environment—a novel form of topological protection that has not been previously demonstrated.

Abstract:In this work, we use Wannier functions to analyze topological phase transitions in one-dimensional photonic crystals. We first review the construction of exponentially localized Wannier functions in one dimension, and show how to numerically construct them for photonic systems. We then apply these tools to study a photonic analog of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We use photonic Wannier functions to construct a quantitatively accurate approximate model for the topological phase transition, and compute the localization of topological defect states. Abstract:In a topological system with an edge, the number of edge states is typically determined by the bulk topological invariant, as per the well-established bulk-boundary correspondence. However, anomalous topological edge states can arise in periodically driven Floquet systems even when the bulk Chern number is zero. A topological invariant (winding number) has been introduced to establish the appropriate bulk-boundary correspondence in such systems. Nevertheless, manipulating the topological properties of systems, whether static or driven, remains a significant challenge. In photonic systems, optical fields with diverse inherent dimensions such as frequency and polarization offer a natural avenue for topological-phase manipulation. In this paper, we present an alternative scheme for switching the topological invariant (winding number) of the system by changing the optical-waveguide mode within an integrated waveguide-based scattering network. With creating a bonding interface, this topological-phase switching facilitates the transmissions of the interface state in different directions. Experimental validation of this concept is demonstrated using a ring-optical-waveguide device. In this paper, we introduce an alternative strategy for tailoring the topological properties of optical systems.

Abstract:Most natural and artificial materials have crystalline structures from which abundant topological phases emerge<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-03125-3#ref-CR6">6</a>. However, the bulk–edge correspondence—which has been widely used in experiments to determine the band topology from edge properties—is inadequate in discerning various topological crystalline phases<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="#ref-CR11">11</a>,<a href="#ref-CR12">12</a>,<a href="#ref-CR13">13</a>,<a href="#ref-CR14">14</a>,<a href="#ref-CR15">15</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-03125-3#ref-CR16">16</a>, leading to challenges in the experimental classification of the large family of topological crystalline materials<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-03125-3#ref-CR6">6</a>. It has been theoretically predicted that disclinations—ubiquitous crystallographic defects—can provide an effective probe of crystalline topology beyond edges<a href="#ref-CR17">17</a>,<a href="#ref-CR18">18</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-03125-3#ref-CR19">19</a>, but this has not yet been confirmed in experiments. Here we report an experimental demonstration of bulk–disclination correspondence, which manifests as fractional spectral charge and robust bound states at the disclinations. The fractional disclination charge originates from the symmetry-protected bulk charge patterns—a fundamental property of many topological crystalline insulators (TCIs). Furthermore, the robust bound states at disclinations emerge as a secondary, but directly observable, property of TCIs. Using reconfigurable photonic crystals as photonic TCIs with higher-order topology, we observe these hallmark features via pump–probe and near-field detection measurements. It is shown that both the fractional charge and the localized states emerge at the disclination in the TCI phase but vanish in the trivial phase. This experimental demonstration of bulk–disclination correspondence reveals a fundamental phenomenon and a paradigm for exploring topological materials.

Abstract:The hallmark of topological insulators is the scatter-free propagation of waves in topologically protected edge channels. This transport is strictly chiral on the outer edge of the medium, and therefore capable of bypassing sharp corners and imperfections, even in the presence of substantial disorder. In photonics, two-dimensional topological edge states have been demonstrated on several different platforms, and are emerging as a promising tool for robust lasers, quantum devices, and other applications. However, three-dimensional photonic topological insulators, specifically those supporting topologically protected edge states in all 3D, have thus far remained out of experimental reach. Here, we demonstrate a three-dimensional photonic topological insulator with protected topological edge states. The topological protection is enabled by a screw dislocation. For this purpose, we utilize the concept of synthetic dimensions in a 2D photonic waveguide array by introducing an additional modal dimension to transform the system into a 3D photonic topological insulator. The lattice dislocation endows the system with edge states propagating along three-dimensional trajectories, with topological protection akin to strong photonic topological insulators. Our work paves the way for utilizing three-dimensional topology in photonic science and technology.

Abstract:The atomic orbital, as an intrinsic degree of freedom, is critical in improving band-tailoring tactics in condensed-matter physics. In photonics, analogously to atomic orbitals, multiple Mie resonances provide an effective way for photonic band engineering. In this work, we demonstrate the topological phase transitions in photonic Chern insulators imposed by band topology through multiple Mie resonances. By continuously adjusting geometric parameters and the external magnetic field in a two-dimensional gyromagnetic photonic crystal, we present the inversion of Mie resonances together with alterations in the Chern number for the corresponding photonic band. Furthermore, we propose a hetero–photonic structure that combines photonic lattices with distinct Chern numbers and exhibits chiral edge states at the heterointerface. A simple magnetic regulation approach is also provided for effective control of the edge state's on–off switching. Abstract:The studies of topological phases of matter have been developed from condensed matter physics to photonic systems, resulting in fascinating designs of robust photonic devices. Recently, higher-order topological insulators have been investigated as a novel topological phase of matter beyond the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence. Previous studies of higher-order topological insulators have been mainly focused on the topological multipole systems with negative coupling between lattice sites. Here we experimentally demonstrate that second-order topological insulating phases without negative coupling can be realized in two-dimensional dielectric photonic crystals. We visualize both one-dimensional topological edge states and zero-dimensional topological corner states by using the nearfield scanning technique. Our findings open new research frontiers for photonic topological phases and provide a new mechanism for light manipulating in a hierarchical way.
