Abstract:Electrolyte design provides a fundamental solution to addressing the irreversibility and instability of metallic Zn anode for fast-developing zinc ion batteries, with growing concern mounted on its sustainability. Here, a cellulose-complexing approach is developed for ZnCl2 based eutectic electrolyte to reconstruct Zn2+ coordination, tune water activity and regulate solid-electrolyte interface (SEI). At the presence of deficient water, oxygen atoms from glucose unit are revealed to coordinate directly with Zn2+, resulting in the participation of cellulose into the solvation shell of Zn2+, with the change of hydrogen-bond network where water transits into its bulk state. The reshaped Zn2+ coordination with depressed water activity leads to the widened electrochemical window and promising ion transport in the complex electrolyte. Endowed with a dissolution-regeneration induced in situ SEI with inorganic-orgnaic characteristics, dendrite-free Zn stripping/plating is achieved even at high current density of 50 mA cm-2 and 50 mAh cm-2 for 2000 h, with a high depth-of-discharge of 85%. The complex electrolyte demonstrates its advantage in the long-term cycling stability for activated carbon/Zn cell over ZnCl2 eutectic electrolyte counterpart. Further, an artificial SEI is fabricated by electrochemical deposition using the electrolyte, exhibiting the merits of possessing the organic-dominant characteristics. The developed approach provides facile route to novel zinc electrolyte towards highly stable Zn anode.
